I was at the Ky Derby in 1973, I was 20 year's old. I bet on Sham, who was a good colt, but he came up against a monster horse named Secretariat, nicknamed Big Red. Secretariat set the track records in all three triple crown race's, a record that still stands today. Secretariat's Belmont race is considered by many as the best horse ever. I won't argue with that either. I still get goose bumps watching it. What a classy owner Ms. Penny was. Rip Ms. Penny and Big Red.
Sham and Secretariat were actually first cousins, shared a broodmare grandfather. Sham had a rough trip in Derby after almost ripping two teeth out in starting gate and made the trip bleeding the whole way. He too set the record that day which still stands as 2nd fastest ever. He’s a legend in my book, my personal favorite.
I watched this live on the TV. At my grandparents, everybody cheering. It was an event, and my Grandfather went to see Secretariat at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.
I was watching a History of the Kentucky Derby races, on T.V., this past May, 2019. I enjoyed all of the races, but the one that brought TEARS to my eyes, was the Kentucky Derby race, in 1990. It was so touching, and it brought TEARS to my eyes, because I was SO happy for her!!!!!!
Chick Andersens call in the Belmont is the greatest of all time when he said " Secretariat is moving like a tremendous machine" and "he is almost a 1/16 of mile ahead of the other horses". Greatest of all the great horses.
I agree and I get goosebumps every time I watch this race. It's become like a popular quote from a movie - Go ahead and make my day., we're gonna need a bigger boat.

The facts are that to make an honest comparison you have to have an even playing field. In the early 1900's there were no starting gates, track surfaces were very different, timing methods were inexact. No one says MOW was not a great stallion, but the records he holds are for the most part are for races that no longer exist. Although MOW won at Pimlico and Belmont the races at the time were shorter in length than today. Secretariat has the track record at all three of the triple crown events and there is no contesting that as fact.

NORTHERN DANCER, the greatest of all time, bred to be a champion, and he delivered like no other, winning the FLAMINGO, FLORIDA DERBY, BLUE GRASS, KENTUCKY DERBY-track record, and the PREAKNESS, the REMSEN in 1963, QUEENS PLATE, never out of the money, won 14 out of 18, and in breeding, changed the breed, its all in the record books. NO ONE CLOSE.
Sad, but when certain horses are extremely popular like Secretariat, Seabiscuit, Citation & Man O War, the rest are only sometimes mentioned but most are forgotten when they also deserve admiration. People talk about Seattle Slew, American P and a couple of others but I think the 4 I mentioned are talked about the most.
OK ending with Secretariat was perfect - but they missed an opportunity. They didn't mention that he had won by a new record - which still stands! its 2019 and it still stands! And as it turns out, he did that in all three races of the Triple Crown!
@@algorel4763 I do believe people noticed Sham, but he never got his due measure. In the Derby, his record as second best, still stands. Meaning that had he run in any other Derby, he would have won. I will go so far as to bet had he run in any other year, he would have had a Triple Crown. He was that good. But Secretariat broke his heart in the last race and he faltered never to run again.
They mentioned it while in shock at the end of the Belmont... Also ESPN mentioned it as well as other sports casters, that Secretariat's time in all 3 triple crown races will probably never be broken!!!❤
You're right. They should've mentioned it in this documentary as well. No matter. The world knows what the real deal is and who the greatest thoroughbred of all time still is! Big Red❤
Northern Dancer was one of the most important race horses ever to live. The bloodlines he created are still running and winning today. He had cancer and unfortunately cut his life short and his bloodline.
That´s true. Belmont Stakes has been nicknamed "The Test of the Champions" Regards from a venezuelan citizen who emigrated to Chile searching a better way of life.
The greatest horse has never graced the Kentucky Derby. Her name was Kincsem, her record is unimaginable by any standards in horse racing,54/54. She won all her races.

I still get chills and cry when I watch the Belmont race. That was and still is the greatest sporting event ever. 31 lengths. People say he was not an athlete, but if he was ranked in the top 50 ATHLETES of all time, it's got to be true. He was an athlete. Like Miss Penny said to him the day before the race " just run your race. And boy did he. Thank you to Miss Penny and Big Red for the greatest memory of my life. Also to jockey Ron Turcotte and trainer Lucian Lauren. Never saw Big Red in person, but if the good Lord above allows me to enter heaven when my time comes we will meet eye to eye.❤
Yes, Swale won the 1984 Kentucky Derby. Swale, was also a Son of Seattle Slew, and half brother to A.P. Indy, who won the 1992 Kentucky Derby, named 1992 Horse of the Year, and who also was a Son of Seattle Slew! Talent, is in the genes!😎🐎
Mine That Bird`s story about travelling three days from New Mexico to Churchill Downs was a real fairytale. Of course the race is pronounced da:rbi The Earl Of Derby gave the race its name after winning a bet with another nobleman in the late 18th C. The race could so easily have been called the Bunbury. Derby is an historic city near Nottingham England. In France, their equivalent race is called the "Prix Du Jockey Club" although the Brits call it the French Derby. Both races are on a par with each other but since the shortening of the French race to ten furlongs a few years ago, more milers have contested it. The greatest Derby winner of the modern era was Shergar`s in 1981. Shergar`s ten length victory remains the widest winning margin ever. As he was heavily eased eighty yards from the line, he was value for more like fifteen lengths."Poor Shergar" was kidnapped from his stud during the troubles in Ireland ,and was murdered by the Irish Republican Army in 1983. As my blood is one hundred per cent Irish, it shocks and disgusts me that an Irish person would do such a thing to an defenceless animal.
I was hoping to see the little Canadian horse Northern Dancer who in 1964 was supposed to be too small to win the Derby,.By the 2004 Kentucky Derby, 14 of the 18 derby starters were of Northern Dancer's bloodline. A small horse who was all heart and attitude.
No mention of Northern Dancer the greatest sire of the 20th century, check out the bloodlines of most of the Kentucky Derby winners after the late 60s about 75 percent of them will have Northern Dancers blood in them.If he had won the Belmont he would of been considered one of the greatest horses of all time
@@redbaronreborn3372 He finished 3rd and if you seen the race you could see him fighting the jockey to let him run and Hartack was holding him back using up energy . I'm not saying he would of won but it might of made a big difference. The horse raced 18 times and never finished out of the money.I also believe he may have been hurt.He raced almost all of his races with a patch over his cracked hoof.Like Ron Turcotte said in the life and times of Northern Dancer he ran the race on pure guts alone and still finished 3rd.Even the great Secretariat never won all his races'
@mac, Secretariat was the BEST, and that is why the 1973 Triple Crown Winner is shown, and talked about so much!!!!😍 Also, you said that Seattle Slew, Affirmed, and Easy Goer were good Horses!! WRONG, Affirmed (1978 Triple Crown Winner), Seattle Slew (1977 Triple Crown Winner), and Easy Goer (Prevented Sunday Silence 1989 Triple Crown Bid at Belmont), were "OUTSTANDING" Horses!!!😎 Spectacular Bid (ALMOST won the 1979 Triple Crown at Belmont), was an OUTSTANDING Horse, and SHOULD have been a 1979 Triple Crown Winner!!!!🤔 The other Horses, Citation, Count Fleet, War Admiral, Whirlaway, Sir Barton, and Gallant Fox, and a few more, were the OUTSTANDING Triple Crown Winners between 1919-1948!!!🤗 Now, we have American Pharoah (2015 Triple Crown Winner), and Justify (2018 Triple Crown Winner), who are just as equally OUTSTANDING Racehorses!!!!!😉
@mac, it took me a year to respond, because unlike You, I have a LIFE, and I am busy with more important matters!!! Secretaries fans are NOT vicious, and we are certainly NOT insecure!!! Why would we be insecure, about the GREATEST Horse, Secretariat, that EVER lived?????🤔 EVERY Year, during Horse Racing Season, Secretariat is ALWAYS talked about, more than any Other Horse. Yes, Man O' War was an OUTSTANDING Horse, but he did NOT win the Triple Crown......Secretariat DID!!!! Man O' War's Owner would NOT race him, in the Belmont race. If he had, Man O' War WOULD have Won, to become a Triple Crown Champ!! His Son, War Admiral, won the 1937 Triple Crown!!!! The Belmont Race, is called "The Test Of Champions" for a Reason! That is why between 1919-2018, there have ONLY been (13) Triple Crown Winners, and sadly, Man O' War is NOT one of them!!!!!! Secretariat won the Belmont, by (31) Lengths, in true CHAMPION style, without breaking a Sweat, to become the 1973 Triple Crown Champ!!!! So, this makes Secretariat (aka Big Red), the GREATEST, just like the Boxer, Muhammad Ali!!! If You don't like Secretariat, that is YOUR problem......I really don't care!!! But, I LOVE Secretariat, and so do MILLIONS, and MILLIONS of other People!!!!!!! One more thing, Smarty Pants, get your facts straight, regarding the Racehorse, Easy Goer!! Easy Goer RACED against his rival, Sunday Silence, DURING the 1988-1989 Season, so he could NOT have raced in 1973, as YOU stated in your latest Comment to Me!!!😂 Instead of being Pissed off at Secretariat Fans, you NEED to brush up on your Horse Racing facts!!! Maybe, you NEED to take another Year off, and STOP taking your ANTI-Secretariat Medication!!!!!😆 Big Red, will ALWAYS be the GREATEST!!!!
In an early 2 yr old race he got mugged at the start. After that he let the rest sort themselves out until the Belmont. That day he broke with the pack.
Any other season sham would’ve been a triple Crown winner, but nobody could come up against secretariat and walk away winning. Secretariat was straight from God.
and no mention of maybe the biggest upset of all them: Canonero II in 1971; who hadn't even ran in the states as a three year old. The day before his morning line odds were off the board at 99-1 but was coupled with the field of 7 runners and still paid $45
Ahhh when Seattle Slew came up and they said that he remains the only triple crown horse to be undefeated before the triple crown, I said to myself, “ Wait like 3 years and you’ll see”
Sorry people but in my humble opinion the greatest race horse so far ,and still the champ---------------------------Secretariat !! NO horse since or before won the Triple Crown in the fashion he did ! Not before ,and not since ,and that is over 43 years ago, and over 2,000,000 horses that have been born since! The Champ Secretariat!!
nope. disagree... I was at Belmont when Red won the Belmont... I saw it with my own eyes.... and while I agree it was the single best performance I have ever seen... he was not the greatest horse I ever saw... that was... still is... and always will be... Ruffian. She not only won all of her races.. she shattered track and stakes records every time she set foot on the track... she was the greatest to ever look through a bridle.
You are entitled to your opinion Mary, and I respect that ,but ,even after 44 years or so, all great horses, are in some way compared to the great Secretariat!
I'm inclined to agree with Mary. After all, Lucien Laurin said she was maybe better than Secretariat. Anyway, my take on it was he was the greatest male racehorse, she was the greatest female (of their generation). I believe Ruffian's spirit was transferred to a later great mare, Zenyatta.
@@janetgriffiths7200, no California Chrome was born in 2011. He won the Kentucky Derby & the Preakness, in 2014, when he was 3-years-old, which is the age requirement for Triple Crown races.

Barbaro is the greatest winner of the race in modern times. He ran further wide but was still able to win by a very good margin. Barbaro is definitely in heaven !
Thanks Paula. I just worry that Justify is being overworked. The system here in England dictates that a Derby winner needs two preps and often only one if the horse concerned is regarded as exceptional. Best of luck to Justify !
What about Northern Dancer only Secretariat had a faster winning time .Considered the greatest sire of the 20th century and over half the horses that race in it has his bloodline. could it be that he was Canadian bred lol in my mind the greatest thoroughbred of all time stats don't lie
I love they way the infield fans used to try to run along with the horses. And they would do it year after year till they died. Then somehow the next generation knew they couldn't keep up.
I bet 20 dollars on Giacomo at an OTB site at a sports bar, and won. I liked the way Giacomo carried himself in the post parade---he was calm, and seemed pretty confident. I won $1000 that day. (2005).
A GHOST WINS THE DERBY KENTUCKY IN 1971, CAÑONERO II (Pretendre in Dixieland ). Horse that until that moment with almost exclusive campaing in the Hipodromo La Rinconada - Caracas - Venezuelan. The connections of the totally Venezuelan specimen: Gustavo Avila, rider,Juan Arias, trainer and owner, Pedro Baptista. The horse Cañoñero ll outsider of the race of the roses in 1971, neverthelless the dividend thrown does not reflect it because the number (15) of the noble horse is placed in key in the official program with another competitor more quoted in the bets. Then Cañonero ll first in the Preakness Stakes y fourth in the Belmont Stakes. If, it is not a great moment of the Kentucky Derby, tell me.

The Best 4 yr. and older horse IMO was The Breathtaking Closer FOREGO!!! He would've Given Secretariat All The Race He Could Handle and very Possibly would've Beaten The Tremendous Machine to even up his Belmont loss...Because from what I've witnessed, FOREGO Became The Greatest Closer Ever In American Horse Racing History after he was Gelded.
Never realized this bdfore, but Shoe stood up BEFORE Gallant Man passed Iron Leige and there appears to be some question as to whether Gallant Man was going to win even had Shoe not stood up in the saddle?
All these years later the debate goes on . Is Secretariat the best or is it Citation. Wait a minute...don't forget Pharaoh and Seattle Slew and how about Sea Biscuit. It is an enjoyable debate though. My vote: Secretariat. What about the rest of ya'll?
To my mind, you could argue all day about the second-greatest horse of all time, and there are about ten horses that you could make a good case for. Man o' War, Citation, Northern Dancer, Kelso, Forego, Affirmed, Seattle Slew, Spectacular Bid, American Pharoah, Justify... but the Greatest Horse trophy belongs to Secretariat, and it's been retired.

You'll get over it; had it not rained at Old Hilltop two weeks later, RR's commanding win in the Belmont would have immortalized him forever!
I agree
We didnt talk bout Secretariat in the triple crown but he is still my favorite!!!
Radwolf2006 AJ, This clip is only about the Kentucky Derby.
SECRETARIAT -TRIPLE CROWN
OK ending with Secretariat was perfect - but they missed an opportunity. They didn't mention that he had won by a new record - which still stands! its 2019 and it still stands! And as it turns out, he did that in all three races of the Triple Crown!
Julie Enslow And poor Sham was a fraction behind. No respect for poor Sham.
@@algorel4763
I do believe people noticed Sham, but he never got his due measure.
Big Red❤
All these athletes are great but for me my beautiful big boy secretariat is the best
Beautiful narration. RIP John Asher.
Left out the third fastest horse and best stud ever Northern Dancer
Best stud ever...? that belongs to Seattle Slew...!!!
@@sherylejeffers9491 know your history, kid. The Canadian was the greatest stud ever.

Northern Dancer was one of the most important race horses ever to live. The bloodlines he created are still running and winning today. He had cancer and unfortunately cut his life short and his bloodline.

Started watching in 97 Silver Charm =)
Monarchos winning was a nice moment. If upgraded, maybe put Nyquist, Justify, and American Pharoah.Lots of great moments here for sure.
Now, after watching this & seeing the long shots, I'm off to watch Ritch Strike... again for the umpteenth time.
Mine that Bird 2009!!! THAT'S a come from behind!
RecRat 1976 , that was one hell of a race !
What a wonderful documentary 🐎🐎🐎
The only thing they got wrong is when they said that Swale won the 1983 Derby. Sunny’s Halo won it in ‘83. Swale won it in 1984.
I feel so bad for Sham.
Secretariat lost the Wood Memorial due to an abscess in his mouth. this caused his mouth pain from his bridle. But he was healthy on Derby day.
They should remake this with American Pharoah,Justify, and country house being added
Dave, dancer was the grestest, its all in the record.
I feel the same way about Secretariat. Big Red was my horse 🐎.
My favorite race horses are Secertarit, Seabiscuit,Ruffin,Frankle,Justify,Black Caviar and Arkle🐴😊🐎🐴🐎
No mention of Northern Dancer the greatest sire of the 20th century, check out the bloodlines of most of the Kentucky Derby winners after the late 60s about 75 percent of them will have Northern Dancers blood in them.If he had won the Belmont he would of been considered one of the greatest horses of all time
fklifter1 I consider him still one of the greatest horses of all time. I see traits of him in dual grand national winner Tiger Roll
And that Belmont was run at Aqueduct remember on a sand surface.ND did get a badly beaten 4th.
I totally agree
Omg, so much fun! Make more!!!
Article didn't mention Secretariat also won the Triple Crown and set race records in each of them. Those records stand to this day.
Of course it does. Don't just watch the first three minutes. :)
mac those horses were great but secretariat was and still is the greatest
John Terry, this clip is about Kentucky Derby races only.
@47:24: awesome picture. If you didn't know it, you would never guess that the Derby TR holder was dawdling at the back of this pack.
Ron Turcotte, standing as high as he can for his horse..... possibly the greatest horse anybody's ever seen.......
No offense, the crowd does not hush when it looks toward the starting gate. It's been loud and it gets louder.
This was fun to view, but it needs updating, with the triple crown winners we've had of late.
Ahhh when Seattle Slew came up and they said that he remains the only triple crown horse to be undefeated before the triple crown, I said to myself, “ Wait like 3 years and you’ll see”
Makes me wonder yet again what would've happened with Barbaro.... sigh.
What a brilliant documentary.
when I here secretariats name I still get a tingling feeling in the back of my neck,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Sorry people but in my humble opinion the greatest race horse so far ,and still the champ---------------------------Secretariat !!
Indeed:)
Hopefully Winx will run in the Breeders' Cup Classic some day. She is definitely up there with Zenyatta.
The most exciting 2 minutes in Sports Entertainment
Would love to see this vid updated with the 2019 winner Country House & how he won due to Maximum Security's disqualification.
Can not believe California Chrome was not mentioned under fan favourites!!!
I know Barbaro's life ended sadly but he too was a fan favourite
Lisa Wilder The film was made in 2006. Tough to include a horse that would win it in 2014.
This was made before Barbaro's Derby, and CC was foaled in 2012, so way before his time.
OOps!!!CC was foaled in 2013.

I loved Barbaro now its gonna be Justify's time
Thanks Paula. I just worry that Justify is being overworked. The system here in England dictates that a Derby winner needs two preps and often only one if the horse concerned is regarded as exceptional. Best of luck to Justify !
postcardterry So did Zenyatta!
What about Northern Dancer only Secretariat had a faster winning time .Considered the greatest sire of the 20th century and over half the horses that race in it has his bloodline. could it be that he was Canadian bred lol in my mind the greatest thoroughbred of all time stats don't lie
Very nice to rewind my flash back my request kindly bring jocky pooncha race if it's possible thank you.
I love they way the infield fans used to try to run along with the horses. And they would do it year after year till they died. Then somehow the next generation knew they couldn't keep up.
I'm amazed how the people in the infield lean over the rail -- seems like they'd be obstructive or cause spooking.
I bet 20 dollars on Giacomo at an OTB site at a sports bar, and won. I liked the way Giacomo carried himself in the post parade---he was calm, and seemed pretty confident. I won $1000 that day. (2005).
SHAM DID RUN THE SECOND FASTEST DERBY AND BELMONT JUS NOT FAST ENOUGH
Sham finished last @Belmont so how is that possible?

Love it 🐴🏇💘
If Secretariet was not infected with a tooth problem no one would talk about any other horse as far as the greatest horse of all time
Never realized this bdfore, but Shoe stood up BEFORE Gallant Man passed Iron Leige and there appears to be some question as to whether Gallant Man was going to win even had Shoe not stood up in the saddle?
Secretariat got grandkids by Bernardino and Zenyatta so his bloodline going to be living on forever
manes and tails ....eightbells SHOULDA WON FOR SURE
Poor Eightbells.. Rest In Peace
While one can appreciation good foreplay, the preamble here is well [and meanderingly] loopy.
