    Something I have noticed after watching so many Animated Atrocities is that writers need to be very careful when they put something gross or frustrating in a story, because those things can legitimately make the story unpleasant unless there is a satisfying payoff.
    An example of a character in a frustrating situation done well is Candice from Phineas and Ferb. You empathize with her frustration at never being able to bust her brothers, but the show gives her little victories in other aspects of her life to make up for it, like being loved by her family or being successful in getting a boyfriend.

    • @poweroffriendship2.0

      Or she does some thing that warrants frustration

    • @DianaGohan
      @DianaGohan Před 2 lety +45

      It also works because though Candace isn't trying to bust her brothers just to mess with them or ruin their lives she has an aggressive annoyed attitude about it that makes her efforts also come off in enough of a negative light where you get why she doesn't really succeed, especially with how positive Phineas and Ferb are usually portrayed. Like the idea is she brings this misery on herself by trying to bust them when she would probably find more fun/entertainment playing along but can't because of her own ego. Which yeah doesn't work in situations like this where you would leave the problem alone if it wasn't interferring and messing with your own life.

    • @ChainsawGenie
      @ChainsawGenie Před 2 lety +15

      Phineas (to Candace, angrily): Why are you trying to bust us anyway? Did you get in trouble for doing the same thing?
      [Candace rubs her right arm nervously]
      [Phineas and Ferb quickly realize how messed up their series/world is]
      Ferb: This explains so much.
      Phineas (to Candace): Look, Candace, I...
      Candace (to Phineas): You know what? Do whatever you want. I don't care anymore.
      [With tears welling up in her eyes, Candace walks back inside the family home]
      [and into her room]
      [before pulling out a box filled with scrapped plans for her own childhood inventions]
      [She rifles through them]
      [before finding one that will not only outdo her brothers' current project]
      [but teach her mother a important and long overdue lesson]

      Yeah, this show already established that lincoln is the middle man who has studied his sisters' behaviors and has a good idea on how to resolve and settle their differences. Crazy idea for a Brawl in the Family “fix”: There is no fight protocol, but everybody usually still tries to stay out of the way when two siblings get in a fight. Lori and Leni once again start the fight, though not for the reason displayed in the episode. When Lincoln sees this, he himself quarantines himself in his room, trying not to get involved. The fight does eventually encompass the entire family, not due to Lincoln’s interference, but due to a type of domino effect where one sister in a fight with another sister gets into a fight with yet another sister. Even Lincoln inadvertantly gets involved near the end. The episode resolves with the parents telling them to make up. At the end Lincoln says “why does this always happen?”

    Ok. I THINK I may have a way to fix this premise.
    To begin, have Lincoln already know the protocol. Like a NORMAL PERSON. Have the sisters tell him not to intervene. Of course, Lincoln tries and fails. Then he decides to ask his parents, but they’re busy preparing for the storm (alternatively, have them try methods that don’t work). Then Lincoln could maybe coast for the rest of the week, since his life isn’t in shambles.
    Then it gets to the point where the fight intrudes on his personal life, and he asks Clyde for advice. While he may not know how to handle sisters, he knows how to handle fights. He tells Lincoln that he should try to understand the fight from both sides and attempt to reach a compromise.
    Then Lincoln tries again and successfully manages to resolve the conflict (the actual reason for the conflict could vary. You could keep the same one from the episode and maybe spin it into Lincoln being a bit frustrated that they made a big deal out of nothing).
    Look, it’s not perfect, but it’s a better alternative.

    Brawl in the Family is another Loud House episode that contradicts an earlier episode, Space Invader, where Lincoln ends up in the middle of a fight between Lynn and Lucy, has to deal with having Lynn as a roommate, and in the end solves it by taking initiative instead just letting things play out. And, once again, even though he's not entirely blameless here, Lincoln is portrayed as the one solely responsible for everything falling apart, not the sisters or parents who enabled, and helped escalate, the conflict(s).

Granted, conflict is plot, and the struggle to overcome conflict makes a character great. However, in these situations...the protagonist doesn't solve anything, therefore their struggle and their suffering is needless. We're just stuck watching the character we're focused on be absolutely _powerless_ to resolve their situation.
    Why would anyone think that's a good idea?

    Also, I think you could make this episode work fundamentally if you changed the following: 1) Have Lincoln already know the protocol and make it clear that, while the sisters fight all the time, fights of this magnitude are rare and Lincoln hates them because they tend to disrupt the household. This actually makes his grievance stronger because he's already gone through fights like this and already has reason to hate them (and it would explain how Clyde knows the protocol too). 2) Remove the parents from the storyline. Have them just leave the older girls in charge for a day or weekend for whatever reason before they start fighting. It makes the situation worse, without making the parents incompetent enablers - which would also give Lincoln more incentive to step in since his parents aren't there to do it themselves. There, fixed your shit for you, Loud House.

    Licoln knows about the protocol and hates it because it means he's stuck in his room bored until the fight blows over. He decides to try and resolve it to prove the protocol isn't necessary and ends up accidently making it worse. Everyone keeps telling him to let it "run its course" and Licoln gets frustrated and says why is the house being punished for a fight between only two of them and storms off to stay at Clyde's house. The sisters fight over making Licoln leave and then as they fight, they realize he's right. Once Licoln comes home, they agree to revamp the protocol to if the sister's fight, both go out to enjoy their favorite hobby until they calm down and the rest of the family let's it happen. Now I'm pretty sure the whole "sister fight protocol" was able to pass through the writer's room for two specific reasons
    1. They thought of it as something that only the sisters would know about and that it just never got bad enough in front of Lincoln until this episode for him to know about which... yeah if even freaking Lily and other people outside the house know about it seems high doubtful. But also
    2. "We find this concept funny and since this is just a comedy cartoon we can abandon logic for the sake of a story just to tell jokes."
    And... sorry no, there are some shows that can do that but shows like Loud House can't. You want to know why;
    If you are a show that is all about teaching lessons and morals and having characters go through arcs, you HAVE to have a consistent logic and focus in your world otherwise you come off as annoyingly preachy and pandering and no kid is going to want to invest in that.
    There are several episodes of shows like Spongebob Squarepants, Aqua Teen Hunger Force heck even Teen titans Go that seemingly spit in the eye of continuity or character bits or basic structure of how the world works for the sake of a joke/plot. See Spongebob's "Life of Crime" where he and Patrick were just going to leave Bikini Bottom after thinking they stole a balloon. I guess you could argue there's some sort of moral of "stealing is wrong" but it's not taken seriously enough at any point to feel like a lesson so you can get away when they just abandon logic and character intelligence for the sake of goofy scenarios. However the Loud house is NOT that kind of show. Heck this episode is all about trying to actually seriously teach Lesson "don't interfere with these problems let them simply play out" to Lincoln so in order for that to work it still has to maintain some level of cohesion with it's world and with it's rules. And yeah though I'm not the biggest fan or anything if you have seen other episodes you know Lincoln not only knows about his sisters having lived with them but would know about such major routines that just trying to escuse it as a "girl thing" doesn't work and with this kind of show trying to excuse it just for comedy especially with the kind of jokes they tell don't work either.

    you don't know how much i hate hate HATE lynn & rita's poor excuse for "parenting"... they have a laid back approach on how they parent their kids and usually let them handle things themselves (for better or worse but usually worse), escalating the problem until it cools down...eventually. they don't think about discipline or anything at all and when they do it's for the stupidest accidents or mistakes. it's the reason why at least half of their kids are maladjusted or psychopaths and they just shrug their shoulders and say ""kids will be kids"". it's so disturbing and not even the comedic nature of this show can disguise it (see: all of luan's prank-centric episodes, the episodes where lola/lynn bullies the others, etc.)

    Ya, know. This really could've worked if Clyde was staying the night and had no idea what the protocol was. And kept inadvertently making it worse. Just without constantly dunking on Lincoln for no reason.
    Just rework the entire episode and maybe it would be functional.

    This episode makes so angry, of how Lincoln was Treated and Tortured. The Sister fight protocol was never invented in season 1. The Parents should have Punished the Girls, not Being cowards.

    This Loud House episode is literally Good Neighbors from SpongeBob and Imposter’s Home For Um… Make ‘Em Up Pals from Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends combined in one. Seriously! What’s with the whole sister protocol?!
