The worst part about this plot is how easy it is to fix. Instead of Plankton stealing Gary to get the formula because all snails are endangered, make Gary specifically an endangered species. Neptune (because we don't need Posidon) sends out a royal decree asking for all blue snails with pink shells and a swirl and dots so they can start a repopulation program. The movie is then the gang trying to get there first. Spongebob and Patrick because it's the right thing to do, Plankton is trying to steal Gary for the reward, Krabs has an obviously fake snail, Sandy wants to offer her scientific expertise, etc. Everyone is in character, you get to the same place, and you can even include fanservice with references and cameos. You can even organically include the whole "friends breaking apart" plot that's always in these movies; Spongebob believes Gary must stay there forever, and goes home sad alone. Then, there's a knock at the door. It's Gary, when Spongebob asks how he can be back already, Gary pulls out a picture of some babies, his kids. Have picture fold out to a comically large amount of babies proving the population is saved. Role credits.

Originally, the 3rd SpongeBob movie was meant to be called "It's a Wonderful Sponge", a parody of the classic Christmas movie "It's a Wonderful Life". Keanu Reeves was meant to play as SpongeBob's Guardian Angel as he takes SpongeBob to an alternate timeline of Bikini Bottom when he didn't exist and why he means a whole lot to everyone, kind of like what "It's a Wonderful Life" did.
However, figuratively speaking, Nickelodeon came into the studio during production and demanded the movie to advertise and promote "Kamp Koral", but Stephen Hillenburg said no and doesn't want it to happen. Nickelodeon obeyed his wishes.
After Stephen passed away, Nickelodeon demanded the SpongeBob movie team to scrap everything, rewrite the script to include Kamp Koral, and tell Keanu Reeves that he will be playing a talking tumbleweed instead.
Speaking of Keanu Reeves, you can tell by the look on his face and tone of voice that he regrets signing onto this movie after his role change.
Other things about "Sponge on the Run" that makes this awful:
    1. The words "hell" and "crappy" were said in the movie.
    2. When SpongeBob reads the book about Atlantic City, the book said it was a "lost city" and warns whomever reads the book "not to go". If Atlantic City is "lost" and "forbidden", how did all the fish in the ocean and Bikini Bottom even get there?!?
    3. If Poseidon is a king and he's rich, why couldn't he spend money on facial cosmetics to fix his wrinkles? What makes snail slime so important that it can cure wrinkles?
    4. Speaking of the snails, if the snail population had depleted around the ocean, why isn't the authorities and/or animal rescue doing anything to find the snails? Why isn't the depletion making major headlines around the oceans?
    5. The whole Kamp Koral flashback on how SpongeBob met everyone was not only terrible, but it sums up everything on what was already established in previous episodes and seasons that were set in stone: those episodes don't count anymore! Kamp Koral, according to Nickelodeon's case, is THE OFFICIAL backstory on how SpongeBob met everyone! SpongeBob told Sandy to become a Scientist, he told Mr. Krabs to open up a Krusty Krab Restaurant, he told Patrick to be proud of being stupid, he told Squidward to continue to play Clarinet despite sucking at it, he told Larry to workout, Mrs. Puff to open up a Boating school; etc.
Bikini Bottom and all inhabitants exist because SpongeBob is their Messiah!

This feels like the writers were trying to remake the original film for a new generation.
And, on the one hand, I'm not completely against that. It's like moral-driven cartoons that retell the same morals other shows have. It's retelling those morals for a new generation of children who probably didn't see earlier examples. Sure, younger generations can still enjoy the original movie, but sometimes it's good to revamp something for a newer time.
But this movie gives me the impression that the writers lacked what made the original movie great: Passion. You can tell a lot of love went into the original, even the actors playing the pirates at the start look like they're having a grand old time.

The original storyboards got so far that they made promotional images for It’s a wonderful sponge, but they had to scrap all that and quickly make something else to meet a deadline. Sadly something else took that title. This is because unlike Wacky World of Tex Avery producers DiC, at least Nick, you know, OWNED THE CHARACTERS(Tex Avery's characters weren't with DiC: they were split with Warner Bros. & MGM before Turner eventually decided to buy them) & thus didn't need to make it a knockoff/bootleg movie(speaking of which, SpongeBob In Tehran, a bootleg movie from Iran, is better than this movie).

Development Hell played part into why this movie is the worst out of the Spongebob film trilogy(so far). The Space Cats concept was original, surreal, and novel but was completely shelved because of creative differences. What makes the production worse is the multiple rewrites, the side plots related to the unnecessary spinoffs forced in by Nickelodeon execs just to tease them, not helping the fact the coronavirus pandemic delayed Sponge On The Run even further. Now wonder why the movie ended up the way it is, and to quote the ordeal: "How could you, Nickelodeon. We were expecting Space Cats sequel, but all we have left is-Spinny the Spinoff-bait!".

Movies such as the 2004 SpongeBob SquarePants movie, the 2017 My Little Pony movie, and Beavis and Butthead Do America are definitely road trip movies.
