"He has 10 Lynns." That would be a great episode. Lincoln is asked who his favorite sibling is, sent into a bunch of alternate realities where all of the siblings have the personality of one, and the moral is that you shouldn't pick favorite.

It would have been cool if Lincoln's brothers were EXACTLY the same as their female counterparts. This would show Lincoln that it doesn't matter if his siblings are male or female, he would still have to deal with them and their differing personalities the same as he had before. Also, I absolutely love the idea about how male Lola would get along with the same personality as female Lola. An episode dedicated to that would have been awesome as a follow-up to the "brothers" universe (or whatever we can all it).

I'll be honest, I think this premise might have gotten more mileage if Lincoln had also been gender-swapped in the other reality. Maybe see the other siblings, who he at first thought were more masculine and boyish from seeing into the world before he goes, but then they turn out to be as protective and coddling as his/her sisters, which would teach him this isn't something his sisters do because they're girls, it's just how siblings are, especially to the one who they (think they) don't know as well due to the gender difference.

Maybe this episode would have been better if Lincoln was faced with the different problems he would have with his sisters normally, but wrongly associated these problems with the fact that they were sisters. Then in the "alternate universe" dream, he realizes that those conflicts aren't gender conflicts, but personality conflicts. And when things are a bit different because of how being a boy might affect a certain character, he would notice that the conflict didn't go away even with those changes, since the core personality stayed the same.

It has basically what you said, where when the mom imagines her sons as daughters, they at first seem like pleasant, better people, when in reality their problems are just displayed in different ways, and she comes to the realization that she likes her children the way they are. I agree, It would have been funny if it was all his thinking that them being boys would make a difference. After all changing gender doesn't change their characters. As kids we tend to think "Ew girls" and "Boys are from Jupiter to get more stupider". So if Lincoln felt like having brothers would be better because you know the way we think as children, it would be both relatable and touching when He finds out from the dream.. oh yeah changing gender doesn't make much difference.

They could have given them very slight changes that he initially picks up on because of how well he knows his original sisters, and that makes him think things will be different, but it soon becomes apparent that they're still really the same people and thus the problems he was having with them haven't gone away.

  • @Walumancer
    @Walumancer Před 6 lety +138

I remember going on a huge rant about this episode over at the Alpha Jay Show when he asked whether One of the Boys or Sibling Tsunami from My Life as a Teenage Robot was better. I think it applies well here so I'll copy/paste.
    *WARNING: INCOMING WALL*
As someone who is a huge fan of The Loud House, One of the Boys is just...bad, especially for the amount of possibilities it had and the roads it could have gone down. Making male versions of the sisters could have been a great way to put a spin on already established characters, but barring Lynn, they all just fall flat and outright go against how they acted as sisters, and not in the ways that men are different than women. We're talking huge breaks in character that don't make any sense. In fact, I'll just list all the gripes I have with this episode to truly hit home as to why I hate it.
First off, the male versions of all the sisters. They range from tolerable to completely out of character, barring Lynn, who is really more of a joke (literally the exact same, even the same voice actress). The least offending versions other than Lynn are probably Leif (Lana), Leon (Lily), and to an extent Loki (Lori), only because they act the most similar to their normal versions (Leif is still a rough and dirty little kid, Leon is still just a baby, and Loki is still stuck-up, bossy, and generally comes across as mean but wise), but they still have the same glaring problems in that they are overtly mean-spirited and cruel, as well as unnecessarily disgusting (even for a male version of Lana).
Lane (Luan), Lars (Lucy), Lexx (Lola), and Levi (Lisa) are in a sort of middle ground where while they are still for the most part in-character, the actions they take don't really seem fitting for said character. Lucy, as a goth, is usually a loner, and someone who people generally don't notice. I just don't see a male version going along with all the rough-housing, the piling, and the gross stuff. He'd more likely just sit on the side and watch at most or more likely just go away. The same could be said about Levi. Being a prodigy, Lisa’s character is very mentally mature, and devotes her time almost entirely to science. While she does sometimes break this, it’s pretty much standard that she doesn’t like partaking in such uncouth ways (unless it’s for science), and I don’t see that being different in Levi. Also, can I ask why Levi plays keep-away with the dimension-crossing watch? Wouldn’t he notice that it at least wasn’t a regular watch? That it’s something that would probably be almost exactly like his own work? While I can definitely see Lexx getting physical with the rest of the brothers, I refuse to believe that a male version of freakin’ LOLA would go along with all the farting, nose-picking, and other disgusting things the brothers do in this episode. I GUESS I can see Lane doing all those things, save for the cruelty part (though that applies to all the sisters) and the inverse wedgie, but I don’t know it just seems…wrong and unfitting.
And then there’s Loni (Leni) and Luke (Luna). The ONLY thing the male versions of Leni and Luna share with their normal selves are their standard traits, dumb blonde and rocker. That’s it. They are completely different in every other way. Leni is portrayed as dumb but with a huge heart, and is by far the nicest person in the family. So why would the male version of her be a thoughtless jerk who laughs at Lincoln getting a swirly instead of trying to help him? Or stop the other brothers from dogpiling Lincoln or their father? Or not try to comfort Lincoln when he’s hurt? This is the male version of the girl who ignored her fear of spiders to save one’s life for her brother, and the girl who wanted to take care of her siblings with the flu instead of avoiding them at all costs. It just doesn’t make any lick of sense. I get that guys generally aren’t as sensitive as girls, but kindness is one of Leni’s defining traits. Why would the male version be any different?
And then there’s Luke, who is by far the biggest offender. Luna is also one of the kindest siblings in the house, second only to Leni. She’s the one who rarely gets angry, the one who always go to her siblings’ first concerts to try and make them good experiences (despite ruining them), and the one who’s arguably closest to Lincoln. So naturally, that means Luke would give Lincoln swirlies and flush his favorite stuffed animal down the toilet. Are you serious? Is this a joke? Why out of all the siblings that did this, why did they choose Luna of all people? If it was Lynn you could have at least said it was somewhat in-character, but Luna? That directly contradicts who she is as a person! It’s a huge break in character, and while Loni wasn’t exactly the nicest person to Lincoln in this episode, he at least didn’t go out of his way to actively hurt Lincoln!
The problem with the Loud Brothers is just what Alpha said in the video: the writers played it too safe. Instead of giving the brothers some depth and parallels to their female selves, they chose the easiest and safest way out. They kept them to their barebones traits and threw in unneeded and superfluous amounts of toilet humor. It’s like they took all the sisters, threw them into the Rule 63 machine, cloned Lynn, killed that clone, got 9 big scoops of brain, and put it into the skulls of the other 9. It’s like they all have a male Lynn filter on them. I like Lynn, don’t get me wrong, but one is more than enough. The toilet humor is too frequent, immature, and cringe-inducing. The cruelty is out of character for all of them, even Lynn.
One quick thing to note is that in one scene the sisters act very oddly compared to what we know about them. One of the examples Lincoln gives to Clyde about it being tough having all those sisters is his proposing of going to the Dairy Land Amusement Park getting immediately shot down by all the sisters, which is strange because the tenth episode of the series (One of the Boys is #45, mind you) revolved around half the sisters (Luna, Luan, Lynn, Lana, and Lisa) trying to CONVINCE Lincoln to go to Dairy Land! Why would these same characters immediately shoot down Lincoln’s request when it’s proven that all five of them like going to the place, or at least prefer it to the beach?
Perhaps this episode’s biggest flaw is the complete waste of potential. So much could have been done here, and yet the route they went with was, well, horrible. I have two ideas in my head that would have made this episode so much more enjoyable. First, they could have gone the same route, but better. Scrap the whole “boys are disgusting and are assholes and that’s it” angle and have Lincoln go through a sort of fish out of water story. The brothers can still roughhouse and be a bit dirty (guys do both, after all. I should know, I am one), but don’t put it on so much. The message could have been that, because Lincoln grew up surrounded by ten sisters, he would have been much more accustomed to that life. Because he doesn’t know what it’s like to even have one brother, let alone ten, he could have decided that it just wasn’t for him and leave. Heck, maybe in the end he could run into Linka who did the exact same thing he did and felt the same about having 10 sisters after growing up with 10 brothers. Alternatively, Lincoln could see that barely anything would have truly changed, and realized that dealing with siblings comes with problems, no matter their gender. Maybe in this version he’d figure it out quickly but the watch Lisa made would get destroyed, thus he would go to Levi and request help, and the rest of the episode would revolve around the two of them making sure a new watch gets made within the 24-hour time limit. Both scenarios would also preferably be double episodes, simply because a situation like this would require more time to develop correctly, but it would be a much better end product compared to what we got.
Now with that being said, this episode did do a few things I like. Getting the TMNT cast to voice the oldest brothers was a really cool easter egg, and I felt that they were very fitting (especially for Luke and Lane). It’s just a shame that they had to play complete jerks. I also really liked that the parents swapped the colors of their clothes, with the dad in pink and the mom in green. It was a nice, subtle touch. Again, I really like a male Lynn being a complete joke. All in all though, it isn’t enough to save this episode.
    Okay, rant over.

The TMNT VA's was a neat Easter egg, but I feel they had some bad miscasting. If I recall, they made Raphael's Actor play Leni's stand in, instead of maybe the Luna or Lynn expy, and he's not really suited to playing a ditzy/dim-but-kind (relatively speaking for the brothers) character like Mikey's actor Greg Cripes. Rob Paulsen as Luane's stand in works, but I partially attribute that to Paulsen have so many roles under his belt in general, including, ironically/fittingly enough, being a previous TMNT Raphael Voice before returning as Donnie for 2012.
It just feels like an Easter Egg that, while neat, wasn't thought through enough to make it work, because when then I start to hear Raph through a character that is decidedly not Raph (or at least much less than other characters he could be playing). I guess it's not as pronounced since none of the guys have deep enough characters for this to persist, but it's something that I couldn't shake once I picked the voices out.

For some people it's disgusting, for others it's no big deal. It's not a problem about, if this is objectively disgusting (which it can't be since disgust is a subjective perception), it's a problem about how considerate you are of someone's feelings. Maybe you don't find it disgusting, if you're eating PB with your fingers, but you family members really don't like it. In this case, it's not very considerate to just not give a fuck about what everyone else who has to live with you and your decisions thinks. You have to compromise for your own good when living together with other people. A family with different people with different personal preferences and comfort zones only works, if you're able to compromise.

I've always thought this episode would've been leagues better if Lincoln's brothers had all been near identical to their female counterparts - as in the only difference at all being their gender. It could've been both an interesting character study as you said, as well as a nice subversion of the more "boys vs. girls" vibe I get from the episode as is. Not changing their personalities almost at all could have been an interesting message about how gender doesn't necessarily have any connection to how people act and with no difference other than having to learn different names, Lincoln would think "why even bother traversing dimensions? I'll just go back to my sisters".

  • @ironnordegraf
    @ironnordegraf Před 6 lety +82

One of the best gender swaps is Adventure Time's Fiona and Cake episodes because their personalities aren't really changed all that much. Differences are usually small and make sense to the individual and the world they exist in. They also managed this in very short episodes. This LH episode could have done something more interesting with the main character realizing that whether he had ten sisters or ten brothers things wouldn't change all that much for him because the characters would've largely still acted the same. It would have provided a much better learning experience for him in the end as well.

Honestly, I always interpreted it as Lincoln's exaggeration of the idea of having Brother's, or at the very least, what he thought Brother's should/would be like. Since it was a dream, and mostly seen as a nightmare, I looked at it as Lincoln taking all the traits he was scolded for in the episode being "the boy he is", and wrapping it into all 10 of his sisters as guys, obviously making them very.. Cookie cutter and no longer individual. In reality, even though the likelihood of a swap episode is small, I would hope the "brothers" would keep the same character traits as the sisters do.

Contrary to what most would think, a lot of guys don't enjoy gross out for gross out's sake past the age of 8 when it's more about getting attention, because the basic human instinct of being disgusted and repulsed by it starts to seep in.
The other interesting thing about the Loud Sisters for me is that they have differing facets within their "trope" that makes it possible to relate to each in part without squarely falling into one match, something the brothers' don't permit when there's no varation in their already shallow characters.

If only it had been about Lincoln learning that both worlds had their own problems as well as perks, and that his life really wouldn't have been any different. Minor tweaks at best. There are problems in every family and he should just be grateful for what he ended up with. It honestly would've been a better way to learn his sisters butting in is their way of caring than them forcing the awful idea into his head that being beat up is a sign the opposite gender likes you. It's also better than implying that all males are hell to live with.
Growing up, my brother was my best friend. Surprise surprise, I'm a girl. My grandma also grew up in a family of exactly 13, and would consider this episode bologna. It's so out of place along with the rest of the episode. They could have at least added Lincoln's comic books into the mix just so we see that he's still the same- but no, when he did get changed into a girl, from his room in general. Plus, they were all made to be distinct characters. Compare that to their Rule 63 counterparts, who are all just "Lulz, boyz be rude n crude". The only things that set them apart from one-another are their ages, clothes, and hair.

Also, the Loud Sisters are heavily base don stereotypes, but besides the mentioned difference of just being general tropes instead of the girl-gender idea, they also get more characterization within (or besides depending on the episode) that trope. Obviously they've had the whole series to work with, but the Loud Brothers are 10 instances of one stereotype and not even token distinctions.

The only time I've seen the gender swap trope work was on Malcolm in the Middle, where Lois fantasized about having daughters instead of sons. Granted, it was the subplot of the episode, but it still managed to give the female counterparts their own personality, and when Lois realizes that having only daughters also has drawbacks, it lead to a hilarious epiphany.
TL;DR: Malcolm in the Middle had an episode like this, but handled it way better.

Maybe others are discounting it as the entire premise of the show is taking the mundane and blowing it out of proportion. If it is a dud, it's the least egregious kind of dud because it didn't really defy anything the show had already established and only really failed in delivery. Lynn is really into sports and does the whole sports ritual things for good luck, Lincoln shows up and she loses horribly, let's take this to its logical extreme and have her superstitions bleed onto every other member of the household. This, as a plot, doesn't break continuity or go out of its way to not be a Loud House episode.
If we're going to liken this to pizza delivery, No Such Luck baked a passable pizza that the delivery boy dropped as he was walking to your door. One of the Boys fucked up the order and delivered a supreme when you ordered pepperoni, and the worst of the worst didn't use actual ingredients, undercooked it, and the delivery boy spit on it when he gave it to you.

I don’t really mind stereotypes that much; it’s the double-standard I have a problem with. It’s how people only find a problem with female characters if there are nothing but a gender stereotype but don’t seem to mind when male characters suffer the same fate.
I hate the word “social expectations". Yes, gender roles exist but they don’t really force both males and females into them. I am a male and dislike football and I don’t feel like I beat some sort of patriarchal power that wants me to like “boy stuff”.

Like I'm female and never truly felt pressured by the people around me into wearing makeup or trendy clothes but always felt more pressure from people when it came to my interest in video games, D&D and certain shows aimed at boys.

When you said that this episode could have had something potential it got me thinking.
Male!Lola could have been genuinely into being a pagent queen and deal with the fact that he's doing something that's "traditionally girly" and possible gender identity issues. Alternatively, (and possibly more simply) they could play up Lola's perfectionism and have Male!Lola be a neatfreak and a control freak.
Male!Lori could have been written specifically as an older, better Male!Lynn (a sports jock, in comparison to Lori's highschool girl) and Male!Lynn could have issues about this (which is a real sibling issue).
And Male!Lisa could be shown to have a Dexter-esque Lab in his room and Lincoln could think this is because he's a boy, only to return to reality and find out that Lisa did in fact have a huge lab hidden in her room, with her dryly commenting that he never asked (and giving the implication that he didn't get to know his sisters enough).

Yeah, how the hell did they screw this up this badly? Especially since the big thing is that Lincoln’s personality is completely different from the brothers’; how did they not realize that not all boys are the same? In fact, as some people said below, this episode feels horribly rushed into production; both because they don’t have the time to fully develop the plot, and how flat the brothers’ personalities are.

  • @daphne2blake

It would've been interesting if all the brothers remained the exact same as their female counterparts, leaving Lincoln to realize that no matter if he has brothers or sisters, it'll always be the same. And it could've worked. There are guys in the real world who would be just like the sisters, but guys. It's not a far off concept of a guy dating another guy, a guy being a pageant star, a guy being into fashion and extremely generous, a guy that is nice, a guy that is goth, into science, likes bugs and frogs, plays sports, plays music, etc..

I don't know. Tomboys are girls with an interest in typically boy things, and I would think the boy version of that is being effeminate. No? That makes no sense whatsoever. Just because your gender is the opposite doesn't mean the rest of your personality is as well, ya doofus. The character, at their core, is gonna have roughly the same interests and personality regardless of their gender. The biggest change is usually in how they express these things, changes in behaviour from social dynamics, and differences in interactions/relationships with other people through the lens of that new perspective.

I'll be honest.. I kinda thought the one episode where Lincoln thought he was causing bad luck for everyone was the worst out of all. Like how quick they believed that he was bad luck even though he was, and that in actually it turns out that, "y'know what? He IS bad luck after all." So the episode shows how much the family doesn't want him around to the point of him sleeping outside his own home.. ....I get that he lies about how much bad luck he causes early on, but it's when they say.. "Oh things have been better without you around." ........I died a little inside, drove himself out of the house to live in the backyard. Then the episode just ends with a weak twist that he can only be good luck if he's in some baseball mascot costume. All I can say is... That's not funny.

Lori (male version): Seth Green (Leonardo)
Leni (male version): Sean Astin (Raphael)
Luna (male version): Greg Cipes (Michaelangelo)
Luan (male version): Rob Paulsen (Donatello)

Do an animated atrocity on another good show. Sym-Bioic Titan had 1 bad episode, Shadows of Youth. The bullying in that is 10X worse than in this episode.

I hope that some day we will get a show that does gender swap correctly, i don't see how it can be that hard honestly, someone's gender doesn't define their personality past an extent. Lola is the center of attention and loves everything feminine so why shouldn't her male counterpart be the same? I can't see her conforming to social standards to fit in, for example. I like the approach you took on this, you're very good at covering gender swap episodes (the futurama one too), I think you'd be able to write a very good gender swap episode because you seem to understand how they work

These are the kinds of Animated Atrocities videos that I like to see. When Enter is this calm and rational and not bitter, spiteful and/or biased; I feel like that's when he's at his best. It doesn't feel like someone ranting on the internet with nasty, destructive criticism just because he's butthurt over nothing; it feels like genuine, constructive criticism about an issue that can be addressed without losing our shit and come up with a solution.
Sure, it makes the title more of a hyperbole/exaggeration than a legitimate atrocity against animation; but it also helps me take his commentary seriously. Because I'm not watching these just to reaffirm or change my thoughts just because some guy is yelling at me with conviction in his words; I watch these because, wether we agree or disagree, I want to know what the person behind the screen has to say... and be proven that their perspective has a solid reasoning.
It might be just me, but I think that Enter is improving.

On this episodes defense, this was Lincoln's depiction of how his life would be if he had brothers. He never knew what brothers acted like. His imagination made them act like Lynn because she acts more boy-ish then most characters, besides Lana. So if they do exist in their own universe I argue they would have similar personalities to the sisters.
    Just a thought.
