  • Nice little DIY home improvement job today. I'm showing you how I hang a mirror on a wall - the sort that has springy metal clips to hold it up. I'm using 6mm Fischer DuoPower wall plugs and 10ga x 1 3/4" screws (or 5 x 40mm). Always follow the instructions that came with your mirror and fixings. This is just what I'm using.

I’ve got a Bosch cable detector. I find I get the best results from it by leaving it in the box it came in and asking my dog what she thinks instead. That gives me a similar level of accuracy as holding the detector against the wall and it’s a lot less frustrating. Then just drill the hole, keeping your fingers firmly crossed and not forgetting to do the “safety squint”

Heaviest mirror I hung was a Patricia over-mantle mirror from Laura Ashley weighing about 24Kg - onto a plasterboard stud wall. I cut out a 1m x 20cm section of the plasterboard and replaced it with a strip of 12mm white pine. I bolted some small coat-hooks to the pine before screwing it to the joists. Filled in around the pine and painted and it works a treat.

I need to hang sometime (not so heavy) in the kitchen. My fixings are 35 mm long but at a depth of 30 mm are electricity cables so to play it safe I need to shorten the
