That saw is definitely a cross cut saw by the teeth count, I wouldn’t ever rip with a saw like that, it’s definitely designed for cross cutting structural timber such as studwork
Hi JB🖐It says its suitable for all kinds of timber materials, but either way, I want an all round saw and if this one is only good for cross cutting then it won't get replaced😬Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
I've always liked the bahco saws. That same thing happened with previous ones I've used (paint wears down and then after a while it starts to sing) I got this exact same one earlier today. I am amazed they can produce such a quality piece of kit for £9.99 (even has a cast alloy handle which gives it extra weight, not that cheapo hollow foam stuff) I like the thicker blade too, doesnt feel like a flimsy fly swatter as some hard point saws do
I remember the day of my apprenticeship where my company sent me for a toolkit, the saws I came away with were the Canadian Diston cross-cut and a Spear and Jackson rip saw. Beautiful saws and if I recall they were about £30 each back in 1979 (probably about a million quid in today`s money) I also got the mandatory saw-set and triangle file for the once-a-week grind of setting and sharpening. I think I kept them for about two years before they were stolen from a job when I nipped out for lunch. Sadly, on apprentice wages, I was unable to afford to replace them. I think the Disstons are collectable items now. These modern hardened-teeth disposable saws are good though nowhere near as coveted as those first saws were to me. I don`t miss all the maintenance though so swings and rounabouts I guess 🙂
Hi Dave🖐I'm pretty sure you're right about the Disston saws being collectable now, and they were definitely a quality item back in the day👊I remember touching up and resetting my handsaw every Sunday evening ready for work on Monday, but the Jack hardpoint saws came on the scene within a year or so of me starting my training, so I stopped sharpening my old saw immediately😬Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
This is a great demo. BTW, I still have the very same Diston Saws, cross cut and rip and The S&J cross cut. Stopped using them a few years ago as now using power tools. They are safely in my original wooden tool box, with dovetail joints that I made in 1978, last year of my apprenticeship.
Been using that exact saw for over a year. Best disposable saw for longevity and the coating stops it binding. Use the green handled saw for rip cutting, although it's very coarse.
Hi Guvnor🖐That's some great input bud and, although it hasn't set my would on fire on the first use, hopefully, I'll find the same as you after a bit more use🤞Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
I tried and liked the idear of heaver gauge saw. But I like my Irwin saw and have a candle to apply on those rare occasion it binds. Thank for your input on this saw.
Hi Ian🖐I think it kinda seems obvious that a thicker, stiffer blade would make better cits, but I'm not sure about that in reality🤔Time will tell for me I guess👍Thanks for your comment and for watching 😎Cheers Del
Great video Del. When you first started cutting with that saw I thought of my dear old dad who was a carpenter he would have said “You could ride bare arsed to London on that!” 😀 It wasn’t cutting at first but you could hear it getting better as you used it. I must admit I like my S&J Predators, they last well and cut nicely.
The bacho ergo I have is separate handle type. Very heavy handle not good for tight spaces. But I haven’t used it yet lol 😂 had it for nearly 7 years. Still getting through the cheaper saws I have which are fine. I bought the handle approach thinking I would be able to carry it broken down in my dewalt tough system box and carry more than one type of blade for different jobs. Nice idea at the time. Thanks for the video. These saws go up and down in value always good to stock up when on offer. Blades alone used to cost about £8
Hi Dave🖐Great comment and I can certainly see your logic in getting the two part saws😉 I suspect most of us just get the cheaper saws as they are just that and seem readily available at most places👊Thanks for watching and have a nice weekend 😎 Cheers Del
Hi Paul🖐You can clearly see me stop after only using a couple of inches of the saw to check if I was doing something wrong😆It really wronfooted me to start with as we all know how great the first few strokes feel with a brand new saw👊Thanks for watching bud😎Cheers Del
Have used the "Superior" range before. They are good but not convinced they are worth the extra. The coating is the best bit as it does seem to help with binding/sticking.
Everyone has their own favourite saw, I personally use the red handled S&J predator, I find it a good all rounder. the thing I have found is that the hardpoint saws are not hardened as much as they used to be, I remember when the sandvik saws first came out they lasted for ages if you didn't hit a nail, now the saws don't last anywhere near as long. I am getting things ready to try and harden the teeth on a predator and see how long it lasts compared to a standard one. cheers Del, thanks for the interesting review of the bahco.
Hi Edward🖐Reading through these comments, it's clear that the S&J saws are well liked, and I will definitely get my hands on one to see what they are all about👊I don't think much is made the way it used to be anymore😪Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
I have a coated saw like that and I've used it one time before putting it away but your video suggests that I should continue using it until I get the coating off of the edge
I'm a plumber/gas I use an angle grinder any blade rougher the better then a hammer the heavier for finesse, for intricate work I use a Kango... 🤠😉 I do use Bahco adjustable wrenches their the best as all plumbers/Gas trades know...😃
Hi V8🖐The more it smokes, the better it's cutting eh🤣You're right about Bahco tools though, and they have a MASSIVE range that every trade uses👊Thanks to your great comment and for watching 😎Cheers Del
Not used the Bacho saw but my favourite hands down is the Irwin 880 plus universal coated, (PTFE coated blade) fantastic saw and seems to last forever, a bit dearer than standard jack 880 at about £13 but well worth the extra in my opinion. Nice little video Del!
Hi Rob🖐Thanks for you input bud, and I'm definitely going to put that saw on the list of saws I'm going to do a back to back review video on👍Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
For handsaws a taper ground breasted blade is the way to go although handsaws today are hardly used for rough carpentry and of the disposable kind. One of my favorites was the old Sandvik 288 an expensive saw back in the 70's. Disston ceased to make good saws in the 1950's when HK Porter took over the company.
I bow to your knowledge and experience with such saws Russ, as I only had a few years of sharpening my handsaws before the JACK disposable one became popular/affordable😬Great comment to read though bud and thanks for watching😎Cheers Del
I stick to blue handle Bahco ,nice to I am not only person that cuts half lap same way ,every one else seems to use circular saw and chisel keep up good work mate 👍
Hi Bloggy🖐I agree bud, and the blue handled Bahco's are a good value, all round saw👍Glad you also enjoy cutting half laps with a hand saw👊Thanks for watching😎Cheers Del
Best saw I have is the Bahco Ergo handsaw, handle is available right & left hand versions ,plus you can fit a wide range of interchangable blades, tenon, laminate, panel, etc.
Good video Del. Call me old fashioned but I use my good saws to cut wood and my throw away saws for sheet materials. My Sandvik in particular but the teeth are wee bit hard to sharpen with a saw file.
I have a Bahco I think it's a laminate small pull saw. I bought it for like $15 at a clearance. This thing can do both fine or rough cuts extremely fast and clean. I even cross cut a 6X6 with it which was not more work than my larger professionally sharpened antique rough crosscut saws. I could even do fine woodworking like dovetails and tenons like you did on smaller pieces of both soft and hardwood. I called it champion saw. I would buy ten of these saws if I find it again somewhere.
Hi Snowwalker🖐That's so frustrating to find such an excellent saw, only to not be able to replace it😩It sounded like a great bit of kit👊Thanks for your great comment and for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Del do a video showing how you make plugs using an axe and some floor board for showing how they twist when you knock ‘em in ! All grounds used to be done like that back in the day . Skirting , dado , picture rail and door casings . No one does it anymore . Still got my footprint plugging chisel 😉
Hi Terry🖐I think I will mate, and I just need to borrow a plugging chisel and sharpen up my axe😜 I did loads of when I first started and it was even part of my CITB Skills test👊Thanks for watching😎Cheers Del
Used the bacho superior saw doing my skills test nearly 20 years ago and swore by it. Even made a then struggling novice like myself look good 🤣 Very hard to get now where I live and for all that a hand saw is used now with the vast array of different power tools probably not worth the worth the money in current financial conditions when the price of materials is rocketing by the week. That cutting action Is something though. A real standout compared with other saws half as sturdy on the market and share your appreciation mate👍🤣
I have used the same Bahco orange handle saws for years. All the merchants have them out here and at some point during the year one or other has them on special so I grab a few. They are dirt cheap, work for a while and then get reduced down the order of not so sharp saws until binned. Not too fussy with disposable handsaws just so long as it is not one of those DIY push me pull me things. I just can't cut a piece of wood with them keep catching a crab.
Hi Dave🖐I usually the same as you, and will pick what's available and reasonably priced, as these do a decent enough job👍Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Good review del. Will have to pick one up when I see one. I favour the Irwin jack I think they’re called. The bahco blue handle are still a firm favourite though
Hi JD🖐I probably wouldn't beat a path to get one, as I'm not sure, at this early stage, that they are superior to the cheaper ones👍Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
I go past the Bahco saw factory here in my town in Sweden a couple of days a week. Glad they still manufacture at least one product here in Sweden still, don't think they make anything else here anymore which is a shame. Hope the saw factory gets to stays at least.
generally the black coating on saws is there to give less friction when cutting through things so it makes sense that at first the teeth weren't biting until you wore that coating off. i definitely find all the saws with this coating make a big difference when cutting through wood all day!
Hi Jordan🖐I get the theory behind these saws, but, for me, it didn't last any longer than a regular saw, and I actually found it a little 'heavy' to use😬Thanks for your comment 😎 Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter interesting I'll be watching your videos to learn more I'm interested in learning what tools are better for certain jobs and hear others experiences!
I really liked and always used the bahco Barracuda when I used to hand cut my skirting, maybe worth a try m8 and I don't think they are any more expensive than the regular blue handle ones.👍😃
Hi Gareth🖐You, along with many others, have recommended the Barracuda saw, so it's one that's on my list now👊Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Hi there Dan🖐I think you would get used to the thicker blade bud, but, it does feel a little heavier than the cheaper, blue handled ones🤔Thanks for watching mate 😎 Cheers Del
Personally I don’t think you can go wrong with spear & jackson, usually 2 for £10 in tradepoint, mix & max with different tpi. The green fine cut was a must for 2nd fixing back in the day of cutting mitres by hand 😮 always have that and a universal red in the toolkit for rougher work.
Hi there🖐I'm definitely going to have a look at the mix and match S&J saws as you aren't the first commenter here who rates them👊Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Many eons ago worked on small site of 6 houses it was middle of really bad winter about 3 below the windows on the 6 houses had ice all over them that bad. one of the older carpenters call him Bert (not his name) had the illness (liked a drink) one Monday morning he was needing a fix (drink) god bless him. so he got this timber about 10 feet long by 6 inches by 3 inches all rough wood. Bert started sharpening up his trusty Disston saw which was well worn from many sharpening's in the past. Bert started ripping the 10 feet timber down the middle. We were all dressed like nan nook from the north in winter gear at the time. I went back in to see how Bert was managing the living room windows were clear of ICE Bert had worked up that much heat steam was coming from his body and deicing the windows house. Bert had his jointer plane out and working the wood. Asked Bert what he was making he said wait and see. went back in about 3 hours later it was like a sawdust factory. there was Bert standing with Two Clothes Poles. Bert went across the road and sold the Two Clothes Poles for next to nothing after 6 hours work. Bert bought two cans of beer. Boss came round later and said is Bert the only one working on this site as his house was full of wood shavings etc Bert was down to his vest while we were all wrapped up in winter gear. think i may have an old Disston in my shed need to have a look.
Hi there🖐What a great storey, and thanks for taking the time to write it😆Amazing what sort of things used to go on back in the day😲Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
I’m in the US where Bahco saws are hard to find but we’ll worth it. Far superior to IRWIN ones in my experience. The thicker blade and nice handle worth it. The Bahco superior does last a lot longer than the cheaper ones too I find. £ per cut foot really.
Dearest isn't always best, i pay £12 for 2 spear and jackson saws from B&Q. You can mix and match, i normally get a 10 TPI & a 7 TPI and they keep their edge plus the handles are comfy.
Hi Anthony🖐I haven't used a Spear and Jackson saw for years, and I really must give them a try👍I suppose you just get stuck in your ways and keep going for what you know😆Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Hey Del. Great little video. Very interesting to see you cutting the 1/2 laps and even better with the hand saw. Now you just sparked a big talking point with the bancho saw. I absolutely hate them i only ever use them for building ICF. Any timber work ill have Irwin hand saw i really think there the business. Have you tried them?. I got one with the black coating i found it excellent for laminate flooring great lasting and there cheaper than the bancho too and you can buy a contractors pack. Id be interested in your thoughts. 🇮🇪 Stay safe. Great work again
Hi Gerard🖐Great comment, and I'm not averse to the Irwin saws at all, and I think a lot of it comes down to what's close to the counter at the timber merchants when you need a new saw🤔What might be cool is to get a few different makes and types and try them out, back to back👊Thanks again for your comment and for watching 😎Cheers Del
Hey Del. Thats a very good point. And if i remember i think thats how i started using Irwin's ! Either that or a freebie from a rep. Id be interested to see the comparison of the other saws if you do a review too. Im kinda set in my ways now, and my wife monitors my toolspend account, all my accounts if im really honest 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sitting in my van having a coffee and I almost spit it out when you say your using it backwards😂 the disappointment in your voice. You can even hear the saw
HI KSLY🖐Yeah, it was hard to hide my disappointment/confusion at what happening🤯I guess we all just expect the first cut with a new saw to be a special treat after using an old blunt one😵Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Great video! Would love to see a 'saw showdown' if you could make one sometime. I follow a guy called Rex Kruger (US) and he has removed the laquer on some tenon saws. What about the old candle wax too??? Perhaps a bad saw out of the packet could become a good saw with some tweaking???
Hi Danny🖐Great suggestion bud and I definitely think a video trying out different saws could be very interesting, and adding things like wax to the blade to see what difference it makes🤔Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Hi agree with that Strummer👍For the general type of carpentry that many of us do, the regular saws, like you sat, are fine👊Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
I had one of these a few years ago I thought it was great, once it was blunt I used it for cutting blocks. Quality must of gone down hill, Irwins my go to
Hi there🖐Interesting you say that, and maybe true that the quality is not what it may have been🤔Irwins are getting some good reviews here as well👊Thanks for watching 😎Cheers Del
That's a pain Del, seriously thought Bahco (especially a higher branded model would be awesome) I'll stick to my cheap arsed Stanley off the shelf jobs. I toss them after about 6 months.
Have you ever tried Stanley saws ? But I've been thinking of trying the bahco saws for a while now and was nearly put off there des 😁 another youtuber called Gid joiner swears by bahco saws 😁 I might treat myself to a bahco and add it to my collection of saws just to drive the missus crazy with my tool collection ! 😂😂 take mate oh aye I've been watching your kitchen units build from a few months back 😁👍👍
Hi Alex🖐I haven't tried a Stanley saw, but you and a few others have suggested them so might give one a go👍Fortunately, my has very little knowledge of any of my tool kit😆Thanks for watching my videos bud😎Cheers Del
one of the first hardpoints I used was a Swedish brand called keen made with Sheffield steel they were very good then all of a sudden they disappeared that was in the late 80,s but i, ve tried a few but keep coming back to Irwin jacks, coated saws all seen to be a gimmick there used to be one called the black prince? twice the price and twice the effort
i always use bahco hand saws. those irwin things are fliping useless. blunt oot the packet. used to see a lot of spear and jackson saws although cant say ive noticed them recently although ive probably not looked what with shops displays being a bit different recently. ive not seen one of those bahco super duper mint saws before either..... have to have a try of one soon like
Hi Paul🖐Great comment as always pal🤗I probably wouldn't put too much effort into getting one of these more expensive saws just yet, as it didn't rock my world like I was hoping🤔Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
I bought one many years ago and it went in the skip, I think it was orange paint but the performance was the same. I should have done a few cuts. It lasted seconds 😂 Cheers Del.
@@chrisneville7310 I hit a nail with the one in video today😬does that count as use🤣I won't be replacing it, not because it's rubbish, I just don't think it's worth the extra dough for the type of work I do👊Cheers Del
How long did you spend looking where the batteries went Del 😆😆🤔. Bahco is such a great make , my brick hammer is made by them 👌🏼🧱👍🏼 Glad it ended well 😬👌🏼
Hi Steve?🤗You're right, and Bahco do some awesome tools, and I wonder if they bought this saw out just for the sake of it🤔 I'm sure if there was a battery operated trowel, you'd be the first to have one🤣Thanks for watching, and the stuff you've done for Tony has been great to watch🤟Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter . I expect I would Del 🤣🤣 . Although brickies are notoriously tight 🤨. I’m not exaggerating when I say our time with Tony and his wonderful team was life changing for me abs especially Alex 😍😍😍🧱👍🏽
Hi Nagantfan🖐 We tend to use half lap joints mostly for roof plates as we just bed them on mortar on the the internal block skin of the building👍And it binds corners nicely when doing hips) If I am doing a true 'stick build' from timber, then I will do the same as you guys, and stagger the joints and overlap the corners as its super strong and much quicker👊I didn't on this job as the customer wanted to save on timber and do away with a double head plate. I just lined the studs up to be directly under the rafters🤟Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter Makes sense, I always like to stack studs and rafters/trusses as much as possible just so its easier for the guys coming behind me running the mechanicals, and it just makes a neater looking job.
Hi Josh🖐Having spent a little extra on this saw, I am going to try to convince myself that I have made a good choice, and it will probably be ages before I finally admit that it wasn't worth the extra dosh😬😆Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Hi there🖐It's classed as a multipurpose saw and should be better than it is compared to cheaper saws with the same point count🤔Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
I have the same saw and it is a pile of rubbish. Over time the black coating causes the saw to create too much friction in the kerf. I went back to the normal saws after that.
I personally think it's a shame that you never see carpenters use saws they can sharpen themselves, or get them done for them, it used to cost less than these throwaways.
I don't really see the point of the 'non stick' shit. A good sharp saw with good set is fine. Unless the timber is piss wet through and the saw rusty. Anyway it's good to see a joiner using a handsaw instead of spending twice as long setting up their billion quids worth of festool gear! Great channel that's always worth watching.
Hi Degsy🖐I think you're right bud, and it may be the case with handsaws that, less is more👊I find cutting half laps by hand super quick and quite satisfying🤩Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Not for me , Gave one a try did not like it. I was using the CK sabre tooth but the quality seemed to have dropped and they did not go so well with tanalised stuff. At the moment I am using the Irwin Jack 880 coated used one all day to day in the rain with wet tanalised timber cut lovely
When the Bahco one only costs £15 (which is the most expensive 'normal' wood saw they sell at ScrewFix) then it's obvious to just get that one - not some £6 one!
Hi there🖐It's personal preference I guess, as well as what you use your saw for🤔I won't be spending the extra money on buying another one😶Thanks for watching 😎Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter I've been using a Sandvik today and it's getting through some pretty thick firewood logs OK. I'm just wondering what to get for when that goes blunt since I've got quite a few logs to get through and I don't fancy getting the chainsaw out, hate the things 🙂
@@yute-hube779 Thats good going using a hand saw for cutting logs bud💪 I've got some very aggressive blades for my reciprocating saw that I use for smaller diameter logs, but I always fire the chain saw up for the bigger stuff😎
@@thetallcarpenter Well I say pretty thick logs, but they are already cut up once, I'm just cutting them in half again, roughly 15cm and already triangular shaped. I'm alright if I keep swapping arms lol. Been using a set of those "Log Bench Jaws" (after putting metal plates where the bolts go and swapping the bolts to M8 x 20mm allen heads).
So, just a bit off the square but I had £1000 of my Milwaukee cordless tools nicked last week. I saw your video when your mate had his van emptied. Do you think that we honest hardworking decent tradespeople can mobilise ourselves to do something about the scum that try to deny us our livelihoods? I’ve got all of the serial numbers of my tools, logged them for the extended warranties. Surely we can secure the talent of an app designer who can help us. I guess Ebay is an outlet for these tools. What if a seller had to submit the tool serial number? Much like a car reg number. It’s not really in anyone else’s interests to do much about this.... the more tools stolen... the more the retailers get to sell them again. Anyway, I’ve submitted this in the hope that we can get something moving just by way of engaging you and your subscribers.
Hi Ian🖐Really sorry to hear the gut wrenching news that your tools have been stolen😪It's proper awful🤬If you check out Skill Builder, they did a sort of related video to mine about tool theft, and, consequently, a follow up video talking about exactly the kind of tool tracking/registration you mention. I have tried, desperately, to engage with other trade based CZcamsrs, but it seems the bigger your channel gets, the less chance you have of making contact🤔Believe me when I say, that I have not done with trying to raise awareness of this issue as well as having some great ideas about simple and cheap ways to better our chances of it not happening at all. Unfortunately, my channel is only small with not that many views, so it's hard for me to get my message out. (hence why I have tried to get other CZcamsrs on board🤞) Thanks for your comment and hope you can get back on your feet soon. Cheers Del
The Tall Carpenter Thanks for that Del. Of course there are much bigger troubles in the world right now too. You’re doing a top job on your channel. Gan canny.
Hi PP🖐These saws are multi use, and thier teeth pattern is optimised for both cutting with the grain and across it👍I'm glad I tried it, and I won't be in a hurry to buy another as I don't think it was worth the extra money given what I use them for👍Cheers Del
Im on tool buying strike at the minute. I work with feckless wankers with absolutely no respect or knowledge for anything. Unless you carry around/use and put away all your tools at all times you can guarantee one of the old men on the firm will have fucked it up or lost it. Last decent handsaw I bought was ruined coz the brickies Labourer didn't have anything to open his bags of cement with. He left it caked in dried cement, then the next day had the cheek to ask for another. Then he actually got proper annoyed when I said no, it's gotten stupid now. I'm the youngest on the firm, I'm not supplying tools to these people, especially when they treat everything as disposable.

Have used the "Superior" range before. They are good but not convinced they are worth the extra. The coating is the best bit as it does seem to help with binding/sticking.
Hi Snowplough🖐I van imagine the coating helping to reduce friction, and certainly rusting🤔Time will tell I guess🤞Thanks for your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Hi there🖐Yes, it definitely got better once the coating wore off👊Cheers Del

@@thetallcarpenter Being left handed,it's great having a saw handle which fits my hand comfortably.
Good video Del. Call me old fashioned but I use my good saws to cut wood and my throw away saws for sheet materials. My Sandvik in particular but the teeth are wee bit hard to sharpen with a saw file.
Hi Jerry🖐Nothing wrong with using your best saw on only good work😉I think the last time a sharpened a saw was 1986😲Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Even made a then struggling novice like myself look good 🤣
Very hard to get now where I live and for all that a hand saw is used now with the vast array of different power tools probably not worth the worth the money in current financial conditions when the price of materials is rocketing by the week.
That cutting action Is something though. A real standout compared with other saws half as sturdy on the market and share your appreciation mate👍🤣
Hi Boab🖐You're right about the hansaws role now amongst all the power tools we use🤔It's not the King it used to be😪Great comment 😎Cheers Del

Great review Del. Turns out the Bahco Superior wasn’t a saw looser after all then!
I see what you did there James😆Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del

Hi Alexander🖐I get what you are saying bud, and we also used to manufacture loads of things here in the UK too, but mist of that's gone now😬Cheers Del
generally the black coating on saws is there to give less friction when cutting through things so it makes sense that at first the teeth weren't biting until you wore that coating off. i definitely find all the saws with this coating make a big difference when cutting through wood all day!
Hi Jordan🖐I get the theory behind these saws, but, for me, it didn't last any longer than a regular saw, and I actually found it a little 'heavy' to use😬Thanks for your comment 😎 Cheers Del

I’m in the US where Bahco saws are hard to find but we’ll worth it. Far superior to IRWIN ones in my experience. The thicker blade and nice handle worth it.

Do you cut half laps because you dont double up your top plates? We always double up our top plates and over lap the butt joints by at least 4 feet.

He left it caked in dried cement, then the next day had the cheek to ask for another.
