I prefer the EL of the old version. Some good improvements including the 3 second light. Date/month is moot point to me. I'll stick with the older version.
I have the old one a number of years .. I don't wish to update it. It don't look old, not got any marks or scratches anywhere. I also have a G-Shock Steel that's got a bright white LED that I don't like. I prefer the EL back-light .. Than you for posting :)

I don't like the bright hot spot of the LED. I purchased the cheapest one on Amazon (under $100), hoping to get the old EL before they're gone. I received the updated model. So they're moving commonly available for normal price in USA. Crazy how some places are charging twice that.
I expected you would show both lightings in the dark just to see which one is brighter. I have many old Casios whose EL lights are very weak or nearly no light at all.
I have a big collection of G-shocks. Rangeman, riseman, frogman, mudman and normal G-shock old and new. The Gw-m5610 negative display version is just great and now I just bought the Gw-m5610 positive display version also. Legendary watches! I really enjoy this retro Casio ones! The A El illumination is perfect! I don't like the led light that is too powerfull just in one corner.. Overbright.. Not even lighting.. . Same led problem in rangeman also. Sadly. So I like/prefer the old model! I really advice to all who really love this retro Casio watches to buy them brand new and keep them all!; because they will dissappear soon enough from the market and than you will be sorry because you won't be able to find them anymore! Just picked up the new version for £79.99 new. This is the only Gshock one needs. The back-light 3 sec delay and the date format edit feature are the two most important extra features for me.
I can't believe they didn't fix the polarization issue which makes the dial illegible from the left angle, whilst being perfectly clear from the right. It's perfectly visible here at 0:00 the left watch vs the right. This has always been my number one pet peeve with 5610. I don't want to have to wear my watch on my right wrist to be able to glance at it (without lifting my arm up) as you would with any other watch.

Can't stop wearing my 5610u. Gotten so much use out of it already especially with the timer. Lot of things I do in my work/ family life has to be timed usually at work. That being said how do I go about getting those bars on the watch face that u have on the 5610u ? Are they expensive?
I didn't know the EL Backlight deteriorates over time. I guess I'll go with with updated version for the new features. Just not a fan of how uneven the LED light is.
The manual states, that it happens over a very long time i. e. probably the rechargeable battery would die before it'd a problem. I wouldn't worry about it.
Nice presentation. I'm thinking of buying one to use in a new job instead of a mechanical one. I used to have such a Casio but in a version without solar. I sold it because as I remember, the SET button was so hidden from the factory that it was impossible to press it and I had to use a pen. Does this new G-shock have the same "flaw"? Regards 👍
Hi, if they don't get the signal, being radio controlled doesn't matter. There's no "RCVD" icon displayed in the upper left corner on any of them, so the haven't been synced. They have to sit close to a vindow, without any obstruction, in order to receive the signal. In my experience, if they are right next to an electronic device (like a monitor), they don't get the signal, even if being right next to a window. But others might have different experiences of course.

Typically mine show a sync time like 12:04, 1:05, 3:05, etc. Typically if the sun is out, they won't sync, even if you manually force them to try. I suspect too much energy/interference in the atmosphere. I'm in St. Louis, pulling from ft collins.

I would be tempted to upgrade, but the LED backlight just kills it for me. All the other "features" aren't even features I don't mind if the EL backlight dies after 20 years. I'll just get a new one.

What is the point of bull bars on the G-schock? Well, that watch already has a raised barrier to protect the screen, and if that plastic tears, it is easy to replace it. It makes no sense and spoils the aesthetics of the watch.

Dealbreaker for me. I bought the new version, GW-M5610U with the blue lining but I hated the strap and the LED light is just...... horrible. Yes, it illuminates the screen very well but it just isn't appealing. Nice updates all round but not for me.

Living in the UK. The date format drives me mad. So being able to change that is a bonus. But it’s a lot of money to pay just for that change for me.

My DW5600 and my GW-M5610u are both best legible from the left wrist. Maybe you had a bad batch?
