    HKVP9 was my first gun and just got it a few months ago. Feels so good and that trigger. The new 2020 has 17 round mags and night sights. Super accurate first time out. It’s also pretty easy to strip down to clean which was a worry when you’re new. I see now why the larger compact guns are a good size for home defense. Love the videos and really helpful for someone considering, researching and evaluating which guns make the most sense. I want to buy them all.

    I'm not a first-time shooter. I started 62 years ago when, at 10 at camp I found I could group all my 22lr shots in the 10/x rings when nobody else could hit the target. I stopped shooting until I lived in the Rockies, in bear country in the 1970s & caught the bug again.
    Once you get your fundamentals down straight, I have 2 absolute favorites. My carry gun is a bit big, but I live in Florida, where an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt would cover a Colt Python with a 6 inch barrel with no problem. I carry a Glock 19 with tritium night sights (I agree about Glock out-of-the-box sights & have them replaced on its first gunsmithing trip). I also have multiple custom accuratized threaded barrels for better accuracy and a tad more length, even though I don't carry with a suppressor screwed in (obviously). [It's also nice to be able to change the barrel and have different lands & grooves ;)]. I have other (mostly inexpensive) mods on the gun, which makes it a cheap gun to optimize - an extended mag release button and extended bar to field strip it. The only legit money I spent was a different trigger assembly with a pound lighter pull. I have small hands, so all that helps and the 19 fits my ergonomics better than the 17.
    I often use the Glock 17 mags, which give me 17+1 instead of 15+1 and use Hornaday Critical Defense 9mm x 19 just about exclusively for carry. The stacked handgrip is still not too big for me and I have Talons on it. What makes it so good for distance shooting in addition to concealed carry is that I fitted it with a backstrap-mounted Crimson Trace green laser. It can be activated just when you are acquiring a sight picture by squeezing tight on the button on the grip's backstrap, so you don't give away your position unless you are actually firing and it saves on battery use. It also doesn't affect speed of draw from most IWB holsters. The 19 also has a lower rail for a tactical flashlight, though I don't use mine when carrying concealed - too much gun in the holster. I'm thinking of outfitting it with a red-dot. You have to get a special mounting plate, but that's no big deal. Maybe in the future. I've found the Glock quick & easy to strip, clean and lube and VERY forgiving if you don't do it often enough - another beginner mistake.
    For competition, I early on used CZ 75 Bs for years, but more recently switched to the CZ SP-01 Tactical setup SA with the decockers (don't like the manual safety on the standard CZ SP-01). It is, in 62 years of shooting, by far the best hand weapon I've ever owned and fired. It's ergonomics are perfect for my hand and its accuracy and trigger action contribute to higher scores and smaller groupings at any distance I shoot. More LEOs and spec warriors carry CZs worldwide carry CZs than any other single weapon, so that says something about its quality as a fighting, self-defense full-sized pistol. I also shoot 9mm in the CZ as I do in all my handguns. From beginner to competition shooter, the CZ P-01 and SP-01will, IMHO be the easiest and most accurate guns to shoot. Just go with SA and decocker, not DA & manual safety.
    I do have a Glock 26 9mm as a second hide-away gun. It can be carried in an ankle holster (on the few days a year in FL when long pants are justified, or in a pants or jacket pocket or kangaroo waist pack. I agree it isn't the gun of choice for carry or learning, but it's a nice backup.
    I agree with you HIGHLY on the need for taking training courses, right from the beginning. And, don't just train at the local range. That's good for learning mechanics & trigger control, but most ranges won't let you draw from a holster and target plinking is VERY different from real-life carry or self-defense skills. Also, even though expanding defense rounds are considerably more expensive than simple range FMJs, shoot both on the range so you are practicing with the same ammo you will be using elsewhere.
    If you have had combat experience, you've no doubt learned to handle the serious changes that the pumping adrenaline and other stressors of a two-way shoot-out can do to your range-trained fine motor control. If you haven't had combat experience, there are excellent training courses in combat shooting techniques that at least help prepare you. You learn to hold the gun differently, fire from a variety of fixed or moving positions, single or two-handed, at multiple targets, even falling or in other awkward positions. I was lucky enough years ago to find a school run by 2 retired Israeli IDF special forces soldiers in New York City who ran a wonderful course. Graduation required skills like being able to draw, double-tap 5 moving targets (just center-mass diamonds) at different distances all within 3 seconds and to shoot running forward, backward, falling, jumping, and every possible way. They also taught an Israeli safety way to carry a Glock striker-type weapon without a round in the chamber, but not lose time having to rack in the first shot. They taught that, when you draw, your left hand comes up to cover the front of the holster and rack the slide as the gun clears the holster. It's only milliseconds slower than having a hot round and you won't shoot a hole in your leg reholstering as an NRA instructor I used to know did recently when he got careless and snagged the inner trigger on his holster. I still carry with an extra round in the chamber primarily for one-handed situations and to have the 15+1 or 17+1 (with the Glock 17 mag) advantage. But, learn combat shooting if you ever expect to carry in the real world or use the weapon as a fighting tool.
    And, remember, everybody's hands and eyes are different, so what's the best for one is not necessarily the best for another. Most ranges will rent out guns so you can try several before deciding which balances and fits the best for YOU. IMHO, YMMV.

    • @thinktwice8860
      @thinktwice8860 Před 4 lety

      Winston Sammy Good question! If I had to choose again, I would pick the Tristar P-120 to start with. I was used to recoil somewhat, because I used to shoot a .270, a 30-30, and 12 ga.. Pistol recoil is different, but it does help some with the 10mm. The 9mm is an easier cartridge to shoot without causing a new shooter to flinch. Actually, a .22 pistol makes for learning marksmanship even better, if you’re wanting to learn proper fundamentals in a range setting. The P-120 and five snap caps mixed into the magazine, along with dry fire practice at home can get you around use of the .22.

      AI3xZJE41 YT I wouldn’t say that my 1911 would make a best 1st handgun for most. It depends on the person. Mine is 10mm, and can induce a flinch and can use tuning, depending on the load. I shoot pretty hot ammo, and after about 400 rounds the factory recoil spring became weak. I went with a stronger spring, and now it works great again. The recoil, or spring issue may have freaked out a new shooter. I love mine! It’s my #1 home defense gun.

    Hegshot, I completely disagree with your opinion regarding revolvers as a first gun. Revolvers are stupid simple to learn on: no magazines, no external safety's, no decocking levers, no feeding problems, no learning how to clear malfunctions, etc.=less complicated. Revolvers are simple to load, there's no slide to rack when it comes to people who have little hand strength. Regarding a .357 magnum revolver, for example, I wouldn't recommend using magnum rounds for a beginner, so you start out with .38 specials in it which would be a pleasure to shoot in a magnum revolver. I learned on a revolver decades ago. These days, so many dismiss the revolver as antiquated, irrelevant when compared to semi-auto pistols. Revolvers are just as effective and deadly as a semi-auto as long as the shooter does his part.

      @Quasar222 Před 4 lety +19

      @@jtlegionnaire6310 yes, reloading a revolver quickly is slower than a semi-auto and it would take alot of practice to become proficient. With range time and dry firing, you can get used to it pretty quickly. Of course, most important is to make those first shots count so that you don't have to reload. That goes for any firearm. • @TheMMSpirit
    @TheMMSpirit Před 4 lety +43

    I'm a middle aged dude that's been carrying since I was 18. I've made all sorts of mistakes that i realize in hindsight. When young and dumb, you tend to get a big gun with a lot of ammo capacity, and you tend to listen to a certain bunch of people pretending to be experts that think that is important. Do not listen to people obsessing over superficials - how "wonderful that trigger is" or "grip texture". A gun is nothing more than a tool that you carry, like your keys or cellphone and its "comfort" is immaterial to its purpose.
    I absolutely DO NOT fall into that SHTF mindset, where I think I need to carry an arsenal of guns, reloads, tourniquets, first aid kits, and all sorts of bug out stuff around all the time. I'm just an old guy who goes to work, and goes home. Visits a couple friends or family now and then, or goes to the store. Very boring life, but I like it.
    Remember, at most, a shooter might use only 1 or 2 shots. Almost in every case, the conflict is over when a gun is pulled, without need for firing. So, no need to listen to self proclaimed experts who tell you about a need for 17 shots, with a reload. That is absurd.
    Do not worry about what is comfortable in your hand. Do not worry about "what you shoot best" Do not worry about what's best "at a range" WE ARE TALKING ABOUT DAILY CARRY NOW, NOT A RANGE GUN. Do you worry about comfort in a screwdriver or any other tool?
    Worry instead about the purpose of the gun you select. What need does it fill? A bedstand gun is very different from a gun you carry with you every day. What about how you are dressed? Can you conceal that gun, or carry it in comfort?
    What I look at for an everyday carry:
    1. Reliability
    2. Effective Round.
    3. Size and ease of carrying.
    So, at the above, we go with a name brand, in 9mm or 38 special, and in compact.
    What I carry now, is a smith 642 in a simple pocket holster, right front pocket. Nothing beats this all-around special, for any weather. Summer in shorts? Check. Winter with a heavy jacket? Check. In a suit? Check. A J frame just falls into your hand when you try to draw it, and has perfect concealibility, awesome reliability, and a proven and effective round. (I am no expert on ammo, but I prefer Hornady critical defense hollowpoints here. They expand reliably, not too much kick to them, and are perfect FOR ME).
    I also will belt carry a semi-automatic instead if I can just have an overshirt to cover it. Spring, Fall mostly. Before, it was a Glock 26, but even that weight bothered me some. Now, I have a G43 and much prefer it. Reliable, more than any other gun manufacturer in my opinion, extremely light and thin.
    Please, do not EVER pocket carry a semi. The holster covers part of the grip, they turn in your pocket, and the trigger is far too light to be safe. NEVER do it. NEVER. They aren't safe, and they cannot be drawn with the speed of a revolver from the pocket.
    I will never forget the advice an older co-worker gave me, the lighter the gun, the more likely you will carry it. So true. A gun is of no value at home, in your car, rather than your person when you need it.
    But, you ask, Spirit, what about home defense?
    Well, I use a 9mm with a light. Again, I don't want to shoot through walls, or outside to hit anyone. So I load it with hornady critical defense hollowpoints, which only barely pass the FBI penetration test. Perfect! They will stop at a couple layers of sheetrock.
    But Spirit, what if we're as old as you, or our wives don't learn to operate a semi-automatic?
    Get a J frame - ruger LCR or Smith lightweight to carry, and put a bigger 6 shot revolver by the bed.
    No need to worry about racking the slide, or a safety, a failure to feed, limp wristing, or any other issue. A revolver is ideal in that situation.
    Just my thoughts, take it or leave it. I've been carrying for a long time, had ten years service, and tried this and that. Don't flame me for my opinion, just trying to help.

I know that there are a lot of gun stores that will just sell you either what you think you want or what they prefer but most of them around me have some pretty honest and practical folks working them which I think we need more of because it's most important for any shooter to be comfortable shooting whatever is in their hands.

That gun took some serious training to control, not to mention working with a trigger that breaks so hard that it pulls the front sights. To anyone who doubts that, dry fire will prove it. But that was 30 years ago and I was mostly into competition. So I needed to become reoriented and more mindful about self defense being the priority) We chose 9mm because of capacity and advances in defense bullets. So we picked up an HK VP9-B and Walther PPQ-SC for my wife. Then I decided I loved the VP-9, but wanted the smaller VP9-SK LE, so I added that. These have been great for training. And now that we have some familiarity, training and fundamentals, we are looking at adding a Sig P365 for concealed carry. Watching your video validated and confirmed our approach. (And I really want a CZ P10-S, but that's more of a 'want'. :-) Started down the rabbit hole and quickly want a small arsenal. So it goes right?

    As a semi-experienced shooter, I completely agree with your rationale. When I got back into firearms last year, I traded my .40 cal handgun for a full sized Walther 9mm. Then I went to the H&K VP9SK. As months went on, I added added a 1911, revolvers, ARs, micro compacts for carry, and other fun stuff. Much like riding a motorcycle, there is a logical progression.

    Once you get into the "full size" guns, the 40 cal is not that bad. Especially now when 9mm HP is so hard to find....40 cal HP is a great option.

      40 gets a ton of hate it doesn't deserve. Once you've practiced a while 40 is great. And like you said when it comes to the larger guns recoil isn't much more than a nine and is easily controllable. I like 9 and for the new shooter definitely the better option of the two, but I think the main reason it's so popular today is just the price of ammo.

      @@NOT-FINANCIAL-ADVICE. oh you are gonna have to prove your statement! any competent shooter will need 5 to 10 minutes of instruction (which is usually not included with the sale) on an unfamiliar handgun and about 100 rounds of ammo to get the feel of the weapon, then practice, practice, practice. any untrained shooter needs about an hour of basics and about 100 rounds with hand holding, then another 100 rounds of confidence building, then practice, practice, practice. the handgun in question won't matter, the practice, practice, practice is what matters.

    A straight double action gun is actually ideal to learn with weather it's a revolver or not. The long trigger pull will help with your trigger manipulation. That being said, I personally love my 320 and 365. If you don't like the grip length of the p365 you could look at the p365xl or at least put a 365xl grip module on a standard 365. The xl grip module makes a big difference

I started with the p10c and it is a pleasure in every way. as a noob I was putting rounds through the center at 10-15 yards while strafing and firing from behind cover. Better sights than Glock, better trigger than Glock, better grip than Glock. It feels incredibly light in hand and yet falls back into sight quickly.
