Getting Through Shore Pound - Entering the Water for Wing Foiling in the Surf

  • I posted this video in the Facebook group and someone mentioned there were not many videos showing wingers entering the water through shore pound and surf. It was not that long ago that I refused to ride the ocean because I got rolled hard in these waves.
What I have found is that waiting, reading the waves, reading the drop off to deep water, and entering calmly with an eject strategy helps mitigate the violent failures.
My current strategy is to get to water deep enough to place the board foil down. When a wave comes over the top, I try to force the nose of the board down while holding the wing way over my head so it does not get taken away. The strategy is not always successful, but right now it is all I have. The troughs go to thigh high level while the peak is well over my head. Getting on the board to paddle out right away was not an option for these conditions.

wing leash to a belt will help free up your hands to better manage your gear getting out. I let go of my wing (once in waist deep) and have both hands on my board when getting through shore pound spots. allows you to get on the board and paddle quicker to get past the waves.

If you look closely at this video, You can see the foil hit bottom in the troughs. I had to hold it up so that when the next wave came over, it did not go sideways. As soon as I got into the deep of the trench, I got on the board and started pumping the wing to get onto foil. I agree, on the board and paddling out is the happy place. I am waiting on the new Dakine Solo harness and then the leashes will go directly to that if I can get used to the new placement.

Thanks! If you get a chance to ride is less intense waves, give it a go. The waves can be worth the effort. If you ride some place like Fort Pierce, you can bypass all the shore pound and go straight to the fun part. 🤙

Exiting videos are a bit more boring or a total circus. This is my response from FB on Exiting: I try and use the power of the swell to my advantage rather than trying to run from it. I wait, right behind where the wave folds. I let the wave pick me up and I try and ride slightly behind the wave to place me on shore. When it retreats, I move quickly forward to avoid the next round of pound. It does not always go as planned. If if it super sketchy, I either unleash my board or my wing. My wing for days the wind is low and the waves are high. Board when I know the wing is going down the beach if I unleash. If my board starts to tumble in the process, I push it away and let god sort it out. I have tumbled that board and foil several times, end of end, with out a ding or crack.

This is helpful. Will try keying in on having full control of the board with wing leash to waist next time.

nice dude. shore pound can get gnarly! but at least sometimes you can time it and get out of the danger zone quick. it's all about finding every advantage getting out, they stack up! B)

thanks! taking full advantage of my home turf has been a goal for a while. That pound has been the barrier to the other side. Once I found the courage to push through, I have found some of the most fun waves in Florida. This is my new obsession.
