- Napoli have been one of the best teams in Europe this season, but their Champions League campaign ended early at the hands of AC Milan, losing the tie 2-1 on aggregate.
Today I take a look at the tactics behind Milan’s victory, and explain how they nullified two of the most dangerous players in world football, Napoli’s duo of Victor Osimhen and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Krunic has been super underrated in their games vs Napoli
He's always underrated. The sad fate of those who do an "invisible" job in football
@@xavierkojak6857 Not only underrated, even disrespected. in italy he's considered a bad player by pretty much every other fan base
no for us milan fans
@@unattimo7658 because he is. He should have received a yellow within the first 10 minute of the game. Not very clean with interventions and that is not good for a defender. All these players seem good just because Leao, Theo or Maignan do most of the hard work and solve the situation with their own skills. When they are not playing Milan just can't win games...
@@BlackRoseImmortal75 No, he is not, and he is not even a defender. how many times you watched him play?
Of course theo and leao are the one deciding games for us, they're literally our best players and Pioli's main attacking options, do you think a mainly ball stealing midfielder like Rade should be in charge of doing decisive plays? he was a key player during the last stretch of games last year when we won scudetto, and he's doing well this year. He is far from being a bad football player.
Dont forget maignan, he kept the back four solidity and confidence since comeback from injury.
Maignan reminds me of Peruzzi back when he used to play for AS Roma, Juventus, Lazio.
Maignan is probably the best goalkeeper at the moment. The fact that he plays for a semi good Milan team does cost him a bit, but now that he can play at the top of the Champions League people will see his real potential. He is a crucial sweeper keeper Milan can’t play without, he has absolute insane reflexes, and is always on position and knows how far his posts are when there is a chance. To top that off he has a 30% penalty save percentage. Dude is unreal.
They cant do it with out Magic Mike in the back TATA was costing us points but now that hes back from injury the solidity at the back is formed!
@@pashkodreshaj2558 Been saying it since last year, look at how milan suffered when he was injured
@@thatracingguy5694 Totally agree, I knew Milan was gonna suffer without him but that was ridiculous, from being the top contender for the Scudetto to barely reaching the Champions League spot is no joke
I love the fact that juan jesus before the game in a interview went out and said "if we hold the ball milan can do nothing " which is something that ended up being their downfall in all 3 games.
he also said that while he was playing for Roma, they were able to come back from 4-1, and 1-0 vs Milan is easier to fix than 4-1 against Barcelona. (which is true, considering the scores, but you just don't brag about it before the double ends)
Can't express how much I appreciate the clips you put in the videos. Makes your analysis videos so much better than the others on CZcams
Milan has an insane amount of energy in the field, having so many young players meant they could keep up than intensity 90 minutes, but the fact that they did not play more than 30-20 minutes the match before that (against Bologna) means they had extra energy and were not fatigued. Pioli showed he is a master tactician again.
The marking and doubling and sometimes tripling - was remarkable!
this is what happens when one coach takes the match seriously and creates a strategy specifically for the team they are playing, while the other is feeling to confident and thinks he can win with what was working for him before,
this is why we won the ucl in 2003 and 2007 while barely making top 4, when there is no success in your game, you look for something that can push you through in ucl since these are just 2 games, you prepare well and a tactical masterclass can overtake anything
Right. Milan 2003 and 2007 barely made it top 4. Lucky they had Ronaldo no. 9. Back then to help out with the goals
@@user-op7cd5cs8c hi mate, we had Pippo Inzaghi as number 9
@@sebastianoperego4213 Ronaldo no. 9 wore 99. He played for Milan too

I dont wanna highjack your analysis, but are we allowed to present why we disagree with parts of your analysis? I totally understand if you say no, nobody likes a flame war on a chill video.
Of course! Any constructive feedback is welcome
krunic is so underrated and maignan is truly vital, our league title run ended when he got injured.
Finally someone covered the Napoli vs Milan tie
Nobody even TifoFootball seemed to cover it
Tifo football only care about English teams
i agree i feel like the extent of analysis for both the Napoli and Spurs ties were "oh spurs/napoli didnt play well" instead of looking into how milan made that happen
True
Dam... 👍
Did football made simple cover it?
you can also point out that this time Pioli prefered messias (who came back from injury) over saelemakers to sub out Diaz, because he is left footed. This was a way to defend Kvara when he cuts back with his right (messias can defend with his stronger foot, the left) and when he cuts out to the other side (Calabria can defend with his strong foot, the right).
Nice observation
Honestly, I was wondering why he did that, because saelemaker has more energy in my opinion, but reading what you just wrote, it now makes sense
I truly believe Bennacer is one of the most underrated midfielders around. His incredible ball control, vision, and technical skills make him a key player in the team. He consistently puts in a solid performance and yet doesn't get enough recognition he deserves. I hope more people start to appreciate his talent and give him the credit he's earned.
Very thorough analysis and brilliant choice of examples to illustrate it, I'm glad youtube recommended this to me
Honestly: you're doing a terrific job here! How you explain seemingly complicated things understandable, I like that very much. Although German is my native language, I understand your English very well, despite the accent. It also doesn't seem - as with some other self-proclaimed analysts - upstage or pretentious. Big like!
That’s very kind, glad you enjoy :)
Man I love your videos. They're so entertaining
I didn't know you before this video that popped up in my YT home.

Thanks man, Great job
Pls make a video about De Zerbi’s Brighton, really curious to know what makes them so good
Creating counter attacks while having possession of the ball by baiting the opposition further forward. They also have a unique build up shape and very competent ball-players to stay in possession even versus some of the best PL teams. Think someone made a video about Brighton and these were the main points, might even be a video on this channel haha
👏 Quality analysis
I think the analysis you made is totally spot on! Milan played 3 times in 15 days against a team that has been dishing out an impressive amount of goals this season and managed to get pierced just once. There was a lot of luck, for sure, exspecially in the only game played in San Siro. Pioli decided to adapt to an opponent that considered to be so superior to the team to make the standard Milan game uneffective. Milan was humble and yet ruthless, exspecially in the first game of the trilogy (0-4 where you can see the exact same approach and some of the real AC Milan offensive game)
Napoli has been the best team by far this year, Milan was very unlucky with the injuries but it would have not mattered much. Congratulations to Napoli for their astonishing season, I loved watching their games... but we (Milan) still have the best Ultras in Europe, I love every game in San Siro and the atmosphere alone pays for the season ticket.
would like to add that the league game meant next to nothin to napoli
but a lot to milan
who will most likely not even play in champions next year. if the names of the teams where substituted with team A and team B and the score was left out and only the statistics of the game were shown not many people would believe the outcome even if all 3 games were combined
@@gerryc2851 well, looking at the effort of the opponents it seems that a game against Milan always matters a lot, for some reason, even in the bad years😅
Nice Video, would love to see one from you about the changes that Unai Emery has made for VIlla!
Yesss!! I agree
This game was a masterclass from Pioli.
Are the short clips you use causing you problems with copyright?

THANK YOU BRO AMAZING VIDEO. THIS IS WHAT AMERICANS SHOULD BE WATCHING TO LEARN WHAT FOOTBALL IS. THANK YOU, FOR REAL. THIS IS FOOTBALL.
I really appreciate the effort, the tactical analysis was spot on. However I really believe this is the kind of games in which tactics account for the least. You’re playing a historical rival, who’s 22 points behind you…. It’s all in your head… and Napoli crumbled
Hey @thepurist_, maybe you could make a video about De Zerbi's Brighton?
Everybody's talking about them, they're high in premier league, huh?
Liked this video should do more serie A content would be cool
That was very intersting!
amazing tactical preparation by pioli
Brother can you do a video about manuel ugarte as a possible busquets replacement. He is just brilliant. Perfect blend of physicality and technicality.he is better than zubimendi and ambrabat. He has everthying for a pivot ,composure on the ball, physicality, workrate, ball controll, passing and he is averaging 5 tackles per game in europa. He dropped masterclass performance against juve and arsenal his age is just surprising watching his matured game play just 22.
Can you make a deep analysis prediction for City vs Madrid?
You should cover other clubs more instead of only Barca since they already have a set strict way of playing with an occasional small tweak from one game to another.

two words: Rade Krunic
I've noticed that you don't have any video about the outstanding performance Real Madrid is showing in the last games. You should analyse that
this video is as good as milan's defensive masterclass
Napoli was without his striker for two out of three games they played against milan and in the third game osimhen was coming back from the injury. I think that when your best player is out and your hole strategy is almost entirely based on his technical skills there is really nothing you can do, specially if you have to play with a midfielder as a striker.
Eh se c'era Oscimmierd....
My dear Don't mind them .
Pls man analize more serie A team, there isn't video like yours in italy🙏😂(sorry for bad english)
Milan defended well and use their chance really good
Over the fact that there was a critical error both on referree ( min 43 ) and both kvara error on penalty, i gotta say that napoli struggles vs pioli squads from a long time, exactly since he was the trainer of chievo verona.
Pioli masterpiece
Don't forget about Super Mike in the goal Milan defense with him is much better.
You should do one for Inter an Benfica! Why did Benfica implode as it did and why is Inter able to play so we'll only in the champions league?
Good luck to the great Milan

Explain Barces defensive achievements
Krunic 😍
In CL late stage, defense is the most important. Come on Milan! show them how the italians do it. winning it ugly.
It wasn't near ugly bro, yes they were defending strongly, but they still were attacking and moving
As a Milan season ticket holder the key strategy was to lower the defense line to take away the verticality of Osimhen.
Usually Milan plays with very high defense line knowing they have Maignan to cover them.
Then doubling marking on sides Lobotka had nowhere to play the ball.
Still they couldn't stopped Osimhen from scoring, that's the Greatness of Osimhen, Kvara eliminated Napoli single handedly with his Selfishness and self glory ambition, Osimhen would had helped Napoli to eliminate Milan if Kvara was passing those opportunities he was wasting and crossing to Osimhen, but he wanted to proved what he's not
@@osagunmwedeobayagbonna4135 osimhen was always marked since we are bad at defending ck and headers he enventually scored at the end but was neutralized well for 91 minutes
@@osagunmwedeobayagbonna4135 Oh just stop it Osimhen fans, as a Kvara fan I am over your not-so-intelligent accusations. Watch Napoli- Juve highlights, or Napoli-Ajax one as well, you will see your Osimhen doing the same to Kvara. Your Osimhen has scored so many goals because Kvara ASSISTED him most of the time or created chances for his team! Stop being bitter, Milan played intelligently and they won, get over it already and stop being so shortsighted! Stop putting blame on players, it was tactics that won.
@@osagunmwedeobayagbonna4135 oshimen does the same thing, instead of passing, he’ll try a ridiculously risky shot, it might just be a Napoli mentality thing because they’ve always had this problem with their fowards
@@bogverenko now you listen little mind, people of ignorant often hate the truth and that ignorant one is you, if you like you can been a football analyst for all I care that is your problem, I can see that your like was those whom adviced him to stop playing team football and to embrace self Glory instead but we will see where that will get him, having said that, how many passes has your Kvara assisted Osimhen with that led to Goals in all his Goals and how many players has the capacity to scored those Goals or few assist that you Individuals kept chanting with, can you tell us? it's one thing to give assist and it's another to be able to had them converted to goals, how many assist has Osimhen gave Kvara? The Juv game that you talked about Osimhen gave him kvara a clean assist that even an amateur could scored after he destroyed two Juv defenders from a very difficult high crossed from the midfield, if Osimhen was selfish like him kvara does of late or like you Individuals claimed he will not be taking any penalties that he always missed even in a very important games, Osimhen will be taking them like Erling Haaland does in man city, go check the first leg against Milan and see how your kvara was selfish and wasted chances with excessive dribbling including the one they lost 4-0 and the second leg" how he wasted chances and single handedly eliminated Napoli, Leoa had just a chance and he released it to Olivier Giroud but he had a lot, again, before kvara came to Napoli Osimhen has been scoring goals and without him Osimhen will score get that into your heads!!! I just pray that Osimhen leave Napoli so that we will see how good is your Kvara, a player that dribbles excessively and caused himself to be predictable by other player's without knowing when to let the ball goes isn't a productive player!!! Bye
SIMEONE would have been very crucial in this match, his addition upfront to play with OSIMHEN means the AC MILAN center backs have 2 men constantly running into the box
but napoli would have suffered much more in this case, cause milan has kept his eyes on the counterattack so Napoli needed some man to cover up his “tremendous” defense-back
@@nostradamus561 Napoli only suffered in both legs because they don’t have so many players who can break play, they refused to commit tactical fouls and allowed Diaz, Leao and others to have a free Run-in without proper interference, with 2 strikers upfront, Politano would’ve been sacrificed for a midfielder
@@onasanyadaniel235 yeah i understand your point, perhaps Napoli should have changed the scheme of the team, cause take out the right wing in favor of a midfielder it’s not a good option if you use the same formation. But this is a real Napoli problem, they do not have substitutes and they are not really well able to use another scheme. In the majority of the case they attack by the wings or with a cross to Osimhen, personally i don’t like this set up.
In the 2nd half, kvara was also a bit selfish. After dribbling in, 2 balls he ballooned instead of laying it to Osinmeh...
too inclined to prove his worth at the big stage, thus made him pretty predictable for calabria
The same he did in 1st leg.
Seems he prefers flashy highlights, won’t pass if he can’t pass it in a cool way
Not having Kim was the biggest reason they lost. He controls the entire backline, and he's their "insurance" for when things go bad. Napoli is able to play super offensively because of their trust in their backline. Not having Rui, Anguissa, and Politano due to injury/red card, was also just bad for them. Oh well, Napoli will win their league title, so that's still good. I'm very curious where Osimhen, Kvar, and Kim will end up next season. They're too good for other big teams to pass up.
they will stay at Napoli for at least another season. We are not that kind of team that sells its most important pieces, if it isn't there first we have enjoyed them well. We are not like Monaco and Benfica. Many top players have passed through the ranks of Napoli and were sold after years, only when they could no longer give Napoli anything.
@@francescoferrara1844 I really doubt they'll stay. Every big team in Europe will be looking at them, especially Osimhen and Kim. I read that Kim already has a low buyout, so he'll most likely go to England, because they pay the most. Plus, he's not a young player and will want to make as much money while he's hot on the market. Osimhen, I haven't heard anything about a buyout, but Man City or Man U will be going after him 100%. Professional football is a business, and players will ultimately move to a team that pays them the most. There is no such as loyalty in sports.
@@John-hp2hg in fact I'm not talking about loyalty, I'm talking about a president who has always sold his players for gold. De laurentis makes them rot on the bench rather than lose money. I repeat ... Napoli is not Monaco, we have had many strong players in the ranks of Napoli, and they were either sold for gold and worthily replaced, or we sell them when they can't give Napoli anything. Look at Koulibaly, Insigne, Mertens, Higuain, Cavani, Fabian Ruiz etc…

Truth is Pioli changed tactics in all three games against Napoli, Spalletti hasn't changed tactics since the start of the season- only attacking from the wings, with wingers obligated to jump 2 3 men and cross. Napoli, despite great season and 70 goals have only ONE GOAL from outside the box just 1 ! And when you dont change that even at this type of game of course someone like Pioli will exploit this. Napoli almost hates counter attacks they prefer to pass back and re-group, they also almoat never attack from the middle, no triangles just individual efforts from the wings and cross to Osimhen. Thanks for a great video but above all I really think Referee was horrendous, a disgrace to sport and UCL, I still cannot understand how he didn't even check Leao/Lozano episode thats really scandalous
Oh. You mean the Krunic penalty? I agree. I'm appalled as well! 🥲🥲🥲
@@unekualconstruction1933 they like to mention the Lozano penalty, but they don't mention the hug over Krunic, or the Saelemaekers one in the first leg. It's ok, they've been ruling us out since the beginning, and they'll keep doing so. The match was fair and square, simple as that.

Milan remember me like dortmund era klopp simple, efektif & deadly counter
Passing the ball to Victor in the penalty box could have helped matters
All that said, that is not what won the game for Milan. Napoli had no answer for Leaos counter attack speed. In both games the counter attack is what made the difference. Oh and one other note of importance...Napoli only had 4 shots on target.
That’s all well and good but they got considerable help from the referee.
I think Milan won this dual match already in the first game, by taking Anguissa out of the game, by the second wrong yellow card and by taking Politano and Rui out of the game through fouls that caused injuries.
nice and compact analysis well done my friend 👏🏼
however, i would like to disagree with one thing in your introduction. napoli are not a powerhouse.
their dominance in the league is undeniable, they deserve the title 100% but they have no competitors. milan have no squad depth to perform week in week out, inter need to invest in some youth as they are sluggish sometimes, juve are in a rebuild phrase and even without the 15 point deduction they started the season poorly. lazio at second place tells you everything about this season.
let’s look at the champions league. they faced a struggling liverpool. even if pool didn’t get real madrid in the ro16 they would have not gotten through in my opinion.
ajax can’t even win the eredivisie despite having the biggest financial background in netherlands.
