They finally did it. Manchester City and Pep Guardiola finally won the Champions League - but it was far from easy.
Inter Milan, led by Simone Inzaghi, were probably the biggest test for City all season. So let’s take a look at Inter’s setup, Pep’s tactical surprise, and how they secured the treble.
    Sections:
    0:00 City’s surprise diamond
    1:11 Inter’s surprise pressure
    2:28 Finding the free man
4:46 John Stones, the number 8
5:41 How City found a way
    6:55 Are Pep’s City unbeatable?

For me this was a perfect closure to the past 12 years where Pep has been criticized for not winning the Champions League.
His 3-2-4-1 was being nulified by Inter's tactics (which to some extent reminded me a lot of 2010 Inter, but without the offensive cunningness)...and then that 3-4-3 with the diamond in the center was like a flashback to his days with Cruyff where he played as a pivot and was exactly what City needed in this specific match, it was kind of epic because its probably one of the most risky formations you can play especially in a UCL final, but they went for it.
I like that at the end of the match he was very humble and admitted they did things well but also were lucky to have won.
I also like that 12 years have passed since he last won it and football has become very different, from scouting using data science, to tactical evolution where practically every team plays positional play, so it's like Pep having to play against his own influence, for me he is the best manager ever.

But doing that would make it easier for city to recover and get quick ball movement they way they like. So inzaghi chose a difficult path but allowed them to insure his team to return to a low block in a 532 a lot quicker , which almost paid out. Seemed like 1-1 draw would had been fair to how both coaches canceled each other out. Pep teams chose to attack in a 3-1(single pivot)4-2 {or 3-5-2 you could say} which would enable him to try to break that back 5-3 2 block and but also if things got out of hand they could mold into a 442 which canceled inter. I don't think Inter "dominated" City as many people are saying. Their pressing was impressive but City has more than enough quality to play through such systems. The thing that held City back was that they got really nervous and it was clearly visible in their passes. Inter's relentless pressing only exacerbated this to some extent.

It was the other way around: the nerves exacerbated the pressing from Inter. City was completely dominated to the point the only difference was, indeed, the squad itself. City has better squad to take advantage of mistakes which is what happened and it is also part of football. If a team comes down to its individualities to win, although valid, it is a clear evidence they were dominated.

City had a superior squad to take the chances on any crack Inter could open, which again, is what happened. Nothing wrong with that, that's football, they spent money for a reason (legally or not, that's to be determined). Yes, you are the only one. City was completely dominated by Inzaghi's scheme. Inter ended the first half with more shots, shots on target, corners, interceptions and possession in City's field. The reason you didn't see risky passes is not because they were 'shaken', is because Inter's pressing and thats also why it looks someone is free: pressing requires multiple parties over a player to cut pass avenues but that means naturally leaving one behind, the thing is that player will never receive a pass because of the pressing. You were watching another game. I do agree that City's players were nervous specially the first 25 minutes but that wasnt the only thing.

Yeah, and Ederson’s mistakes in the beginning only made things worse. If John Stones didn’t start dribbling through Inter’s defense to relieve the pressure and calm the nerves, Inter might’ve won.

I just hope Xavi is learning because he has a long way to go, this guy was done 1v1 vs Inter and I remember Pep said in an interview before the UCL match that you don’t do 1v1s against them else they will punish you and it’s true. Heard Pep won’t sign a new contract at City and I think it’s time he comes back to Barca because since he left we haven’t had success like we used to.

I feel like conventional 433 with overlapping fullbacks and a DM dropping in-between CBs would've been a simpler and more effective way of exploiting Inter's 532. If they had attacking FBs like Davies or Theo (or even Cancelo), it would've been much easier to carry the ball from the back line. City don't need that kind of overlapping FBs for 90% of the games they play, but occasionally there will always be games like this. Pep is an extraordinarily creative manager but I don't think he has fond a solution to this chronic dilemma yet.

Spare me the platitudes. It's easy to draw arrows and dotted lines after the fact, but if Inter had scored those two headers you wouldn't say the same even though it was the same game.

What I got from this match is how stubborn Guardiola is with his so-called philosophy. It’s remarkable how many chances Inter got to score following Rodri’s goal. It reminds me of Ajax when The completely bottled a very comfortable lead against Spurs. City were insanely lucky when they should comfortably controlled the game after.
