“What is Hybrid Pressing” by Jon Mackenzie - / what-is-hybrid-pressin...
Manchester City won a resounding 3-0 in their first leg against Bayern Munich in the Champions League Quarter Final. And unsurprisingly, it was another tactical masterclass by Pep Guardiola. Today we’re going to examine the use of his four centre back system, and how it gave them the edge in every phase of the game.

I personally really blame the board for sacking Nagelsmann. I don't doubt Tuchel is a good manager and will lead Bayern to new heights. But whenever you switch coaches/managers, you're adopting a new style of play and new expectations. It takes time to adapt to these new changes, and in the MIDDLE of the champions league is the worst time to have to let players adapt. This is the first time I've seen Bayern players confused on the pitch.
It does not mean BM wudnt be beaten by MC if Naglesmen was there.
@@ma466 they would not lol

Pretty crazy that Pep can put 4 centre-backs in his lineup and still maintain fluidity in his squad, just goes to show how great of a tactician. As always, another great analysis!
Also helps when all 4 center-backs are extremely technical for their position
@@unkemptsamuel Coaching helps too. Ive never seen Akanji or Ake as "techinical" before they came to city. In fact, they both struggled initially so some credit to the coach for working with them and building confidence in them

Alvarez did a great job in such a short time on the pitch. For me, bernardo, stones and akanji were on a different level last night. Enjoyed the game.
Also dias*
Dias?
Días had the hardest job of the four center backs. The team looks much worse when he's not on the pitch. What a player.
Dias was the best
De Bruyne and gundo were the only city players who a had a normal performance. Everybody else was 8/10 at least
Bernardo is such a dynamic player, love he's scoring goals too off late
That defence of man city is mind blowing akanji, ake as 1v1 fullbacks💥 John stones moving from cb to midfield along with Rodri is so fluid... Stones is playing like a great midfielder🤯 and Ruben Diaz playing as main cb. THAT defense is like a wall!!! Genius...
Yeah The Bayern wingers had nothing on Ake and Akinji

I don't think this tactical innovation can be justified by elite squad planning and money AT ALL. This is just Pep being a master innovator. They lost their best inverting FB in Cancelo. He wanted his team to play a 3-2 in build up and realized that until Lewis matured, he did not have a fullback who could invert into a double pivot (he said he does not find Walker good enough to do that). So he asks his CB to become a DM in possession. Of course the number of CBs who can do what Stones did are VERY VERY few but the key thing to note here is that Pep found a way with the personnel he had to fit his structure.
Playing in the double pivot in the 3-2-2-3 requires a high level of technicality
so its still mostly good on Stones for being so technically good
but the rest credit goes to Pep for actually recognising it and making the best out of it
Knowing what to do with an elite squad arguably takes more ball knowledge and innovation than knowing how to arrange a squad of average joes
> I don't think this tactical innovation can be justified by elite squad planning and money AT ALL
Surely the fact that they have at least 4 quality CB to call upon is a sign that you can't discount the money. It doesn't dismiss what Pep has done but saying money can't be taken into account is a bad take.
@@dairylee87 I think he meant it can't be justified ONLY by money.
Surely having a talented squad and good club structure is important (which is why Clubs like Spurs haven't won anything even with Top managers like Conte and Mourinho) but at the same time these performances don't come without an excellent mind to put everything together.
Needs to be an Innovator with Average players /Average team… 🤷🏾♂️
Pep has so many strategies in his pocket, current strategy even don't employ a single natural fullback in the pitch.
One thing that still doesn't cease to amaze me - how did City sign Akanji for as low as €20M in this highly inflated market? He's been pure class.
That's where the role of a good scouting network comes in.
Dude was running down his contract and wasn’t really shining for club or country.
City recruited Dortmund's best striker and defender in one window
He wasn’t good for dortmund thats why. Dortmund fans were begging for someone to buy him
I believe Akanji was looking to get high wages on his next contract whilst at Dortmund, but no team was willing to pay a high transfer fee to get him. He ended up having to play "that game" of running down his contract.
City signed him for 20m and paid his high-demanding wages. He's cost approx. £100m in total for 5 yrs. His first season's performance suggest its a bargain.
With the way the modern game and marauding fullbacks have become the norm, playing 4 Centre backs is honestly one of the ballsiest moves out there, especially with the way Stones moves into the midfield just makes them logically so vulnerable to pacey breaks. But the way Pep has just made it work by getting the back 4 to be an absolute marvel of containment in his high press tactics… insane. Bravo Pep, Bravo.
Vinicius will destroy that defense
@@MatiasFernandez-mj4zwThis didn't age well. 😂
This shows that Pep is an enormous mastermind!! These tactics are incredible and they suit everyone in this City squad. It would be fascinating to see the same intensity and performance in Munich. But what a game awaiting!!
I’m not sure pep will play the same way in Munich. I’m almost certain Bernardo will drop back to the midfield with mahrez playing on that right wing and Gundo dropping to the bench then you will have stones playing through the right back
@@ogbonnasam9997it depends on team, pep has been using tiki taka but more general not few certain player in epl ver where they play with 11player. Then he made team without pure striker, anyone can score anyone will play in false 9 position! Then he use another system again.
Makes me happy to see Man city content. Most people don’t like city and I kinda get why but it doesn’t change the fact that is a sensational team playing beautiful football. I’m not saying you should like Manchester City, all I’m saying is you can still appreciate the football.
Those who don't like city seem to have no problem with chelsea 😂 and conveniently ignore the fact they've spent 600m this season to be in 12th because it contradicts their argument that we only win because of money 😂😂😂 you people are a joke
The reason why Pep is great is because as much as players adapt to his system, he also adapts to his players and also evolves to ensure he gets the best out of them.... A true master💯
What completely changed the game was Julian Alvarez coming on for Kdb.. And kudos to Grealish he was really smart in his pressing and spatial awareness always blocking off where the next Bayern pass had to go and that got to Upamecano. And if someone would've said Ake would mature this much into the player he is today i wouldn't have believed. Just go to show if you put in hardwork around a great coach and environment you'll reach higher heights.
It really is a shame Bayern had so many players slip up which led to the 3-0 scoreline, but that first half man... That was simply the highest level of football and it was so pleasing to watch.
that first half didn't let me look away for a damn second

Pep is really a genius. John Stones who is a CB playing as a second Cdm or inverted fullback, Ake who is also a CB playing as LB against a team like Bayern and still beating them? Remember, Pep has also played Stones as RB (when Walker was injured), he has also played Laporte as LB.
John Stones is good with his feet. He is composed under pressure and he is technically better than Walker with the ball.

4-¹
he does the tactical changes needed for each game, I sometimes wish Klopp could also do that *even if he's also a good coach* he sometimes lacks with teams that park the bus heavily with 3 center backs
Someone said if Klopp was manager of City, Fernandinho would still be a playing there. Klopp simply needs to perfect the "passive team rebuild process" so that his team doesn't suffer every 7 years
@@Ghost_of_Gaby once told a friend who supports Liverpool that klopp’s coaching style is not sustainable. I told scout 3 years ago that klopp is the kind of coach that overuses players until they burnout. It happened everywhere he has ever coached in and now it’s happening in Liverpool.
@@ogbonnasam9997 not entirely his fault though, due to fsg, Klopp has nowhere near as much squad depth as pep if you neglect his tactics
One thing which I think really helped City was the ability of their defenders to defend the 1 on 1 situations which was something the Bayern defenders struggled with
What? The goals of city were a random distance shot and the huge mistake by upamecano. The only one struggling to defend 1v1s was davies vs bernado silva. After the 0:2 bayern basically gave up.
City players never had 1v1 inside the penalty box with Bayern defenders.......1st goal was long ranger second goal was a header and the 3rd was a simple tapin..........this is what city does they don't rely on individual brilliance........they have individual brilliance but they don't rely on it
@@lolno8406 you’re looking at City’s goals, I’m looking at City’s defence. Two separate things
@@LEVI-hv8dw the brilliance of the City defenders especially Ake and Akanji is why City didn’t have problems committing men forward when building up play
@@williamgabrielackon6347 Bayern doesn t have a striker right now but Sane dribbled past the city defenders a couple of times and had a rly big chance to score at the beginning of 2nd half. Both defences pretty much cancelled each other out and they relied on range shot, difference was city scored with a ranged shot while bayern didn t. But city will go through and probably win the tournement if they can beat real madrid next round. The other side of the bracket is just so much weaker than one filled with bayern city, chelsea and real madrid.
An attack often aimed at pep is that he has all his success with financial backing at powerful clubs. But a critical look at this will show financial backing and powerful clubs don't guarantee anything. Real Madrid went years with no European cup. Arsenal under Wenger only won 3 leagues and no European cups. Chelsea with abramovich couldnt win a European cup foe the better part of a decade. Jose mourinho didn't last at Chelsea. Conte doesn't last anywhere. PSG cant buy a champions league and no longer even win every competition.
Turns out there aren't really any examples of a manager who can constantly win at the top level over and over. Pep is a genius. Ancelotti is great but has never been a man who wins 3 or 4 trophies in a season. Even Klopp has let a team age into mid table.
Pep is up there with Ferguson.

Hey, I really love watching your content and I have been doing so for the past months. I would like to know if you will be making a video on Barcelona's squad planning (Boards influence) , Xavi and his lack of playing time given to youngsters and over reliance on Sergi Roberto in midfield
You can't tell me Pep is not a footballing genius... We might not have won the UCL as yet but Pep is one of the best managers of our time, if not the best.
Very good analysis! Congrats!
So Xavi wasn't a madman when tried Frankie on center back or Erick on defensive midfielder. That could work for Barca if 3 center backs are Araujo, Christensen and Kounde. Frankie and Eric in front of them. Balde could play as left winger as he is playing now basically. Kounde wouldn't have to go so high to overlap right winger. On one of your previous analyses you told it's clearly not working. But taking all injuries into account they would play maybe 5 games in a season in this formation.
I think that will have to wait until next season, as we do not have a player to play the lcb/ nathan ake role. I could see christansen playing the false cb/ john stones role, with araujo as the center cb and kounde as the right cb/ akanji role. I definitely agree with balde playing as a touchline left winger.
huh???
😅Well, Xavi is trying to convert Alonso as the LCB, problem other than he is also left footed, he is far far away from Ake
@@colinclam Alonso is also a 1000000000 times slower than Ake
Xavi actually thought of similar tactical ideas as Pep back when he was at Qatar. One of his ideal formations was the 3-2-4-1, with his wingers providing width and a four-man midfield to counter against having just three in the middle.
Initially at the start of the season I was confused why there were so many centrebacks in the squad: Christensen, Araujo, Kounde, Eric Garcia. Even Marcos Alonso and De Jong could fill in the CB roles. Then as I watched Pep’s Man City in the UCL, I realised Xavi is actually working towards this sort of shape. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a pairing of De Jong and Eric Garcia in midfield. And certainly Kounde will eventually be able to play in his favoured CB role in this shape, alongside Araujo and Christensen. There’s also rumours that Barca might sign a left-footed CB too.

Great video. Pep is a genius and his players are some of the best in the world
Great insight into Peps genius.
I don't want to say that this team seems to just be figuring out some things just now, that gives them too little credit for how good they've been all season. But they do seem to have gotten so much more fluid in the transition from offense to defense and defense to offense. They seem simultaneously more ruthless going forward and less vulnerable to getting caught on the counter. And everything seems to be just flowing more when they're in possession, with more patience and less of the occasional instances of trying unsuccessfully to force the ball into Haaland they were guilty of earlier in the season. I think if they can keep the core team together and not lose Gundogan as the rumors suggest might happen, they could be something truly special next year.
Now they have better defence for their attacking play..love it!
Eric Garcia should start in dm for busquets, he’s faster and able to make the same passes as he’s very technically gifted like busquets. It would be better for build up play too as he pushes up, frenkie would be there along with Pedri who link up with anybody well. It would be such a great start to the attack all the time, as well as better for defensive retreating too
Pep is a football and technical genius.
Man City under Pep lost:
Joe Hart - they don't miss him
Kompany- they don't miss him
Sane - they don't miss him
Yaya - they don't miss him
D. Silva - they don't miss him
Aguero - they don't miss him
Sterling - they don't miss him
G. Jesús - they don't miss him
J. Cancelo - they don't miss him
E. Garcia- they don't miss him
Any other team losing 📉 this amount of key players would've collapsed. e.g Liverpool lost Mane and the whole team collapsed.
Liverpool did not collapse cause of Mane’s departure. Mane was past his prime his last couple season at Liverpool, it’s their defensive liability and midfield that needs a proper no.6 and no.8.
Gabriel Jesus?
You mean the guy that plays for Arsenal who are 1st in the league?
Keep that same energy.
And cancelo who plays for Bayern, who has a chance of eliminating Man City?
Keep that same energy.
This is because positional play football doesn’t rely on individual player and is not build around them but team system. Still sending Cancelo was ballsy to Bayern too.
Great video and great channel!! can you please make a video about the Real Madrid win against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey? I would like to have a deeper look into that game
I Gotta Appreciate Pep for taking the risk of putting Stones as a CDM. Can we see Xavi Replicate that with maybe Christensen or Kounde? Eric has been ok-ish as a DM but he fit too with time.
City and barca both play a similar system tbh bar the player differences and coach experience. Xavi wants to play the same system next year but i dont think it works without amrabat
This is where you are wrong. Pep's system is not necessarily dependent on just one player. I mean, even before Haaland came to City, Pep managed to win lots of trophies with players like Sterling, Jesus etc who aren't as clinical.
Even when De Bryune got injured a couple of seasons ago, City were still sweeping opponents away in breathtaking fashion.
Xavi still has a lot to learn.
@@thuo1000 I agree with you.
pep's masterclass as usual !!!
I like the pivot off the CB because the transition/recovery distance is shorter
Genius isn't it? Then all the rest of the backline needs to do is the central cb(dias) needs to shift across a little bit and the wide cb's can narrow in if required.
Great analysis! I didn't understand why bayern played with four wingers. They gave city a lot of space in midfield and had trouble in build up especially in the second half.
tuchel said because he wanted fast players to provide for the main striker. obviously he underestimated ake and akanji tho lol
Real madrid manchester city will be a insane game
the funny thing is, Pep almost "stumble upon" this "pivot in build up, CB in defense" idea. Earlier this season, he tried Rico Lewis, but Rico is not there yet when asked to function as a pivot. Then Pep tried Bernardo, but Bernardo's defense is a bit sketchy against opponent winger. And finally comes Stones, and pivot-CB role change is so much more natural than pivot-FB.
My comment is a month after this video analysis and in that time, Pep has fine-tund his 3-2-4-1 formation to an even higher level. Attack is the best form of defence and their frightening front five (F³) keep the ball so high up the pitch and control the game there.
As an Arsenal fan I can only watch & wonder when Arteta will get to even a certain level of flexible thinking his guru Pep has. In hindsight, while we led the table for most part, we actually were just the pacemakers for Pep's team who still have enough gas in their tank to just beeze past without breaking a sweat. Point to be noted is with this formation ManC is on an unbeaten/winning streak from March, if my memory serves me right.
Everything is fun and games until Pep overthinks his tactics and messes up the game.
I hope he doesn't do that this season. Especially since he is gonna once again face Real Madrid in the semis.
That's my greatest fear😂. Once Pep overthinks, he screws up everything and messes up the whole plan, he just has to be steady. I hope he learnt from that Madrid game
@@HeathNjiri-ve4iu I legit thought putting Stones as a defensive midfielder was one of Pep's classic "overthinking tactics" thing. But it's nice to see it worked out pretty well so far.
@@sreenivaskamath4243 very true, it has worked well. But some of the decisions like for example removing the pumping elements of the team (Marhez and KDB) when he thought he won was a very srs mistake. I hope this season he just let the backbone of the team play until full time bcz some of the substitutes can't contain the pressure of the game. The game looks simple when others are playing, but once you remove one player, the gun points at you. Look at how Argentina almost lost the WC after the coach removed Di Maria. So, yeah, some overthinking is useful, but some is detrimental to the team
@@HeathNjiri-ve4iu good point there.

The way they handled their 1v1 and how they frustrated Sane and Gnabry. Ruben was a rock as always. The VR headset is actually sick. I can only imagine how much better players could get if they can practice their decision making in game without actually having to use their body. I can definitely see professional teams using these down the line to allow players to train their mind while their body is resting.
Didnt Guardiola introduce the False 9 with Messi. He now introduced the false 4 with Stones. What a mastermind.
Haaland scored his first city goal against Bayern and now his latest goal is also against Bayern
Hmm, maybe these tactics can be called "Pep Si ! Tactics"? /I'll get my hat and cloak
Interesting 4 CBs and on the wings 2 Ball-Retainers. Very creative idea to control possession and pressing as opposed to "in this situation you run down the wing and cross the ball into the box" older style of tactics.
Maybe Bellingham is an interesting option for ManC looking at this system? Hard to lose a player like De Bruyne who can pass better than anyone in the world right now? So a lot depends on the players he has and what can be done with them eg Walker conversation.
Pep is always cooking something new every few seasons, dude is a mastermind

pep is a football scientist
The key was without the ball Man City was unreal as good as with the ball so consistent and clutch in key moments otherwise vs this Bayern almost impossible to get that scoreline
ball playing centerbacks and holding midfielders operate very similarly
Pep actually learned from xavi hernandes when he attended barcelona vs real madrid, the defensive tikitaka is how you create space for intricate counter attacks in this new age of football
I remember there was a point at Bayern when Gaurdiola played with no natural center-backs (Xabi Alonso and 2 fullbacks made up the back 3). Now it looks like he has gone completely in the other direction.
How about if you plsy a team that will keep a winger high and wide, how does the recovery run work , cause to me i see like lots of space avails itself
Actually, Pep once did this formation before, Sergio Busquet has the sampe role with stone when Pep at Barcelona. Busquet had to play the role of DM and CB.
So maybe, stone reminds Pep of Busquet.
That's why he's not using Kyle Walker but stones, walker's plays as an attacker instead of right back or fullback he plays as an ss that's why you see walker chatting with halland in frot of opposition goal post.
