It could also mean he was standing atop a small hill, and simply chose to move to lower ground.

Perhaps there are benefits to centaur form that we haven't considered.

Maybe Lyanna was so powerful that she could split her conciousness, remaining both human and horse at the same time. Bran, Arya and Jon all go into dreams/transes when they warg so if Lyanna could be half a horse, she might be the most powerful skinchanger we see in the story.

It's said that GRR Martin only used so many horses because he was sure it would never be adapted to film. HBO's choice to replace all the horses with humans is a little disappointing, but it would have cost a lot more to hire horse actors for all of these roles.
