My one classmate in high school was so into Devo in those early years, he used to wear the full suit and glasses to our private school sometimes and the staff couldn't make him take it off because it didn't break the dress code. LOL!
This is a fantastic document of a very important band. It's amazing how fast they were playing live in this phase of their career. It's most likely that when they played Southern California they came in contact with the proto-HC bands of that scene (Germs, Bags, Weirdos...) and took some inspiration.
It's true! The book Recombo DNA is specifically focused on this cross pollination in the late 70s. I also have a vague memory of Brian Eno suggested that the Not Men songs be sped up, but I could be wrong. Either way, it's all so much better at this speed!
@@skaneverdiesI agree with you because you’re subscribed to Tim and Eric, Alan Resnick, Joe Perra, etc. You providing a sources means nothing to my ape brain.
@@skaneverdies Yes, Brian Eno made the band speed up their songs when recording "Are We Not Men ?", and then, when they performed live, they were even faster, until 1981/82 at least. The fastest show I've heard is the 1979 LA New Years eve gig, just unbelievable. After 1980 most of their set was focused on their synthpop era, so less guitar driven songs and when they came back in 1988 they reverted the speed of the old 70's songs back to the original way.
☆!f one were to view "Come back Jonee" The Germs, Go-Gos, Alice Bag, Weirdos, et. al are in the front row. But believe this simultaneous synchronicity took place all at once in various permutations all over the world. DEVO was but one jamming on this de-evolutionary frequency. Their precipitous event horizon was bearing witness to the Kent State massacre while attending studies. Much luv an appreciation to the O.P. and the incomprably great DEVO☆
@5:49 to 6:05 might be the longest note and phrase ever sung onstage in human history 🤔🤷🏻♂️🤯 This version of Satisfaction is 220 bpm!!! This is genius on display
On their way to Japan (or was it on the way back?), they played the Campus Center Ballroom at the University of Hawaii, capacity 600. The same set list as this on a much smaller stage. The first night there were about 40 people in the audience and Devo totally kicked ass! The second night sold out on word of mouth. I saw it all and got Gerry’s pants (intact) on the second night. The shows were so tight! Changed my life. The next time they came (the New Traditionalists tour), they filled the Blaisedell Arena.
@@dannyh9922 dude devo is like my favorite band and they are punk rock as shit but you are lying to yourself if you don't see that they are also giant dorkus-malorkuses (maybe with the exception of bob 1)
I think this was near the beginning of the Japanese becoming obsessed with American pop culture. Before this, it was still too soon. I think it was somewhere around this time when KISS played at the Budokan. Which was completely sacrilegious. Those poor kids... LOL 👹🤘⛩💓
Let's just appreciate the incredible drummer
Let's appreciate DEVO
RIGHT!
LEFT!
RIGHT!
LEFT!....
Alan Myers iirc. FUCKING BEAST ON THE KIT! We still miss you, Alan...
Bonham’s favorite drummer
I think that's the guy with the sobriquet "The Human Metronome".
When im in the mood for some Devo, this is one of the best two or three concerts for my personal faves!
It's one of the Devo shows ever
Saw them in Greensboro NC two months after this concert. Incredible performance.

Man. That crowd kicked ass. Nice job, japan.

I wore my white bus boy uniform to white bread suburban high school one day , only one person out of 2700 asked "why"
When your band plays in Japan...you've made it.👍
Damm! Happy to see this, my upload of the concert only has half the footage... I didn't even know the other half existed.

They actually said the early demos were at “Akron speed”

これは超貴重な映像ですよ。
よく残ってましたね。
I want to see more guitar solos like in Too Much Paranoia, with the effect boxes duct taped to the guitar bending pitch, delaying, etc.

Just checked: It was 5/31 and 6/1-on their way back. $7 each night.
That’s awesome! 😊
Great video, thanks for sharing. Poor Mark messed up the words to Satisfaction but quickly corrected himself. That's a pro.

Red Eye sounds like some long lost sped up Suicide song.
Cool. Never seen this before
The way they made the synth sound like a koto at the beginning was pure genius

It's quite clear Bob 1 would've been a better lead singer.
John on his knees is a gay thing .
