Every era has its heroes and every scene has its legends. The 80s had the Stray Cats and today they are the indisputable icons of neo-rockabilly.
When the US trio stormed the top of the charts in their adopted country of England, punk still reigned in the United Kingdom. But Brian Setzer, Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker brought that certain something that the mohawked men also had: a feeling for danger and rebellion. Impressive footage of this time include two performances in Germany: one in 1981 in Cologne and one in 1983 at the Loreley which were recorded by WDR. These are genuine recordings that make the trio’s fascination still accessible today. Both concerts will be released for the first time in a good quality and with a superb sound on DVD and CD. The Stray Cats can come to live at home just as they were at their best: young, raw and wild!
Brian Setzer, today an “older statesman” of rockabilly and a platinum holder with his successful Brian Setzer Orchestra, works passionately but was perfectly groomed as he struck the strings on the stage of the Cologne Satory Halls. He was a “rebel without a cause,” similar to the young James Dean. But this guitarist has a desire: he wants to bring Rock n’ Roll back to life. He wants to play his guitar as Eddie Cochran did. No question that he has succeeded; he is still loved for this today and this is whyhe is the first guitarist after the legendary Chet Atkins to have his own signature Gretsch model which he plays exclusively.
The Stray Cats aren’t only made up of Setzter with his phenomenal guitar playing and his “crooning”. Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom are responsible for their special sound, too: Phantom’s simple drumming became an example for rockabilly drummers worldwide and his wild screams in the songs belong to Stray Cats exactly as Brian Setzer’s licks and Lee Rocker’s clattering bass do. He treated his instrument like a lover which he hugged or like monkeybars on which he did gymnastics. The bad boy attitude was internalized by the “street cats.”
Both concerts also underline how rapidly Stray Cats’ career progressed. Between both recordings were filled worlds. In 1981 they were rockers and by 1983 they had become known as tender teddy boys in part of the scene. And internally not everything was at its best, leading the band to a break up one year later. There is nothing to feel about the current performance on the Rhine. The band rocked the mixed audience as usual and were even honored by their discoverer Dave Edmund. Next to Stray Cats were acts such as U2, Joe Cocker and Steve Miller.
The influence Stray Cats had on music and fashion is in hindsight unmistakable. Where would psychobilly legends such as Meteors or Demented are Go!, who were founded as a countermovement to rockabilly, be today? Would the sound of the 50s still be so popular today if the Stray Cats had not brought it back to life in the 80s? And what would bands such as Duran Duran or Culture Club have carried if the US trio had not established creepers, snake and tigers patterns, or knee-long coats?
Today we enjoy classics such as “Stray Cat Strut,” “Runaway Boy,” “Rumble in Brighton,” and “Rock This Town” like they will never be heard live again with two concert recordings for eternity.

It's hard to believe this was 40 years ago... damn, I'm old.
Boy, if you listen to the Stray Cats you can’t be old 😊❤
@@torisaengilbert8400 my brain agrees, but my body mocks me🤣
My body was 53 years old but brain and mind was 13 years old😂
@@torisaengilbert8400Im 18 so 😂
My brain tells me I’m 22; but my body lies to me, I just ignore it!! 😂
Brian Setzer is a hell of a guitar player, never gets a mention
All the other guitarists are very aware of him.. not mentioned much because nobody can keep up with him… one of the best..!!
Great Rockabilly singer too, pretty amazing cat!
We started mentioning it over 40 years ago
Yeah, seeing the Strays live made me appreciate him that much more. What a treat it was!
He was no Steve Vai or SRV or Eddie or George Lynch or Dimebag, but he was better than me in that rockabilly style.
Awesome sound with just 3 guys. Simplest drum kit, no distorted guitar sound, no backing tracks. Just talent. Great vocals, great guitar solos, great everything.
No CGI, no pagers, no effects pedals, no dolphins, no pizza parties, none of that. Just pure talent.
Some distortion.
@@andrearel3703 Yes, but I meant, it is not the whole thing, like in punk or metal. Nothing to make the sound any different or bigger than it is naturally. That sounds like Gretsch and Fenders. You can hear every note clearly.
Setzer has used the same rig for years: 2 1960's Fender Bassman amps with Chinese tubes, a Space Echo pedal and occasionally a Tube Screamer pedal. He definitely drives the heck out of those tubes, so the guitar sound definitely is distorted. I would also like to point out the Stray Cats toured with FOUR members including a SAXAPHONE, so there's that. But the number of musicians really doesn't have any bearing on the "quality" of the sound - Rush is a prime example.
@@mr.anderson70 I can't imagine why a band would want to use CGI, pagers, dolphins or pizza parties, but I assure you Setzer's guitar rig includes several effects pedals and two heavily "modded" Fender Bassman. Pagers? What are you eighty years old?
now this is what i called hard working musicians..raw power with little help from technology...
Brian Setzer is one of the finest guitarists of the past 50 years.
Certainly one of the most underrated, as well. These guys meshed as a trio and set the bar very high for bands into rockabilly. Setzer's reverence for the origins of rock and roll is really admirable. His later orchestra work is incredible as well.
Finest in history. One of them anyway.
Setzer played some great big band recently. A good talent.
and the hell of a singer! Waoo!!
Yeah, because he plays Rockabilly guitar he doesn’t get the respect he should. He’s got incredible chops!
And he’s a good singer too!
Stray cats were always quality. Very underrated songwriters, brilliant feel good tunes. They were pure class, that's why millions of feet have been tapping along to them worldwide for years. Thank you Stray cats.
I dont know even one person that listens to the stray cats. lol
If you read the comments on here I think you'll find that your statement is total rubbish. Happy Christmas lol.
Underrated {Overrated} comment, strikes again…😛
@@97warlock ok, then you live with a community with 0 taste. Stray Cats the best ever. If you don’t agree you just don’t know anything about music and how music works
Hi I agree with your statement. @@sven7023
Stray cats were killing it! Audience has no idea how insanely good they are.
Dude single-handedly revived both rockabilly and big band. He wrote all the charts for that big band.
Yes...so when will they be inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame?
As far as swing music, he was sorta late to the party.
And Gretsch guitars
@@jamesolivercalip2587In the early '80s? How do you figure?
Yes!! And fantastically, I might add! So wish I’d seen them perform live, huge regret.

What a treat to hear and see this amazing concert 40 years later! Thank you for the upload. 😊🎸🇺🇸
They were only 25 years away from the Rockabilly era at that time. Chew on that.
What a lucky guy I am. Me and my wife been there, great Music the whole weekend and damned hot weather. 40 years ago. Damned I`m old
Dude don't talk how many years ago you making me feel old too ! ! Wouldn't it be great to go back in time to live in this era of Music and sanity 😁
@@troygerencer1620 Everything seems be a bit better these days, isn`t it?! lol
These guys are wild! I've never heard a band get so much sound out of a guitar, standup bass, and 2 drums!
One of the finest guitar players ever. His tone is amazing and the band is so tight. Amazing how great they sound. Remember how they turned the rock world upside down with “Built for Speed” in high school!
Nothing like playing drums and stand up bass plus singing backup, and one not losing their cigarette. That is talent my friends! lol. Seriously, great band, cool seeing them keep alive America's Rock and Roll roots when they were together. It's hard not to like the Stray Cats. They're like a cool breeze on a clear, warm summer's night Right?
Wrong, I'm nine minutes into this performance, and they're incredibly boring. Every song sounds the same.
Three piece band? Gimme The Who.
English fan here, loved em from the start, 'A cool breeze on a hot summer night ' like it.
@@JeffK.Charm school graduate, you are not...narcissistic? Yup.
Congrats - I replied to your stupid comment. The music stands on its own.
Wow they played so tight, it's exactly like the record, amazing job
That these three like-minded mates and seriously talented youngsters revived rockabilly in a time of burgeoning synth-pop still is a wonder to behold.
They gave this punk rocker what he was really thirsting for, my life changed back to the oldies mom and Dad listened to. As a punk I dressed like a rocker from the 50s already, pissed off the mullet boys fierce! My sis got me this album for Christmas 1983 senior in hs. Never gone back or looked back still driving my 54 Chevy Bel air. Saw them on Detroit 83. God Bless those boys!
The meteors and the cramps were pretty cool too.
My 15 year old self caught this tour in Portland, OR. in 1983. INXS was the opening act. I never forgot the way Slim Jim would climb up on his bass and balance there! Nice to see this again and know I wasn't hallucinating!
Lee Rocker se sube a su contrabajo. Slim Jim solía subirse al bombo de su batería.
Slim Jim Phantom was the drummer. Lee Rocker, the bass player.
Such a tight band, they complimented each other perfectly 😊

Actual raw talent performed live!
It would have been honed extensively through thousands of hours of practice. Hardly raw talent. Talented with meticulous attention.
A master of his craft !
Brian Setzer still releases records and tours regularly. He puts on a great show for the audience.
Ty! hope he passes by this way soon, want to witness Brian’s brilliance live!
so does Lee Rocker
And still plays like a champion 👍
Saw this live on TV in 83 and ever since been hooked on Rock'n'Roll & Rockabilly; played in many bands since then as a guitar player and still do, changed my style forever. Saw them again on their 40ths tour, still rocking... wow
Listen to Lonely Summer Nights. Absolute MASTERPIECE
What can I say about the kings of rockabilly. The legendary Stray Cats. ❤ U still in 2023 and beyond.
40 years later still going to see them this July. They’re timeless.
man this brings back serious memories, thanks for the unload
So much wonderful music in the 80's. I'm so grateful I was in my 20's right through that epic decade 🎉🥳🎈🍾👯
We had such a wide range of music in the 80's, it was a fantastic decade to experience.
Awesome! I was in my 70s in the 80s and I'm still dancin!
@@drsteele4749 yeah at 110 years old, well done
My generation had the best of it, it'll never happen again.
Sad really .....
Let's see 3 guys with minimal gear in this day and age ROCK as hard as these guys!!!! Snare, bass, cymbal... standing bass.... and a (probably) 50 or 100w Fender head and ONE SPEAKER!!! I graduated high school in '83 and I'm STILL a HUGE Cats fan!!!
Was für eine Macht. Die Stray Cats waren für mich als Teenie unfassbar und sind es immer noch. Allein der Purismus beim Equipement bringt heute noch die Musikhändler zum Heulen.

Outstanding! Real rock and roll stripped down to its bare bones, new bands need to get back to this!!God I'm well into my 50s and Brian and the boys still set my heart a pumpin....
New bands need to exist, to begin with, and then they need to learn how to play and sing. No autotune for these lads.
Yes they do!! You cannot help but to move hearing this pure feel good soulful rock n roll.
great gig. Great band .Brian Setzer is one of my all time favourite guitarist.
Mine too; love Rockabilly Music!! 💃💃💃
Меня тоже эта группа радует и восхищает!🤗💥🎸🎸🥁 Мне 54е года, и я знаю по рассказам о рок-н-ролле от старых людей!! Даёшь рок-н-ролл!!!

Real Cats keep it real, and they keep it alive.... Long live R & R .
G'day He is without dou't will always be one of the top of the tree greatest guitar players to walk earth..and that's that!!! And by the way... WHAT A RYTHEM section.. UNREAL..
Wow. I saw Stray Cats for free at UNM in 1981 in a tiny student center with about 50 people there. I was so close to Brian Setzer I could've touched him. Glad they made it big- it was a super fun set.
unbelievable band...electrifying gig....god i miss music...
Oh, you should listen to some! It's pretty cool.
I was there.....41 years ago.... good memories
Peace, Love and the Truest Spirit of Rock N Roll ☮️
To this day I still 100% sure that this is the most badass live band of all time. Their attitude of these days is outstanding!
This randomly popped up on my recommends, and I'm like, "Oh wow.. Haven't really listened to these guys since I was a kid (9 years old in '83). What a great show! They sounded fantastic. Now, I'll be revisiting their music.
The first Stray Cats album was one of my first albums at maybe 8yrs old in 1983 - amazing how every song comes onand i still know all the words! Just tried to get my 14 yr old son to dance w me and he just gave me his "sigh" look - kids need to appreciate this kick ass rockabilly! And dancing keeps you young!
Twenty years ago, and just amazing to see this still has a place in rock n roll history above many top bills of the day… love these guys. Brian is one of my favorite guitarists for sure.
20+20=40 years ago but who's counting anyways 😂
Even their mics are old timey!!
12/31/2023 Start humming " Rock This Town " so of course this comes up on list after no thought no news nothing remarkable and here comes The Stray Cats into my Ears I love it !!
That battle cry yell @ 8:20 by Lee Rocker is Spine Tingly GREAT, and adds so MUCH to their sound !!!
Nice to see a guy who can really bring it with relatively small hands- like me.
No holding him back.
Doesn’t miss a note
Fantastic
Great right hand.
The left gets there too.
Thanks lads
the stray cats had massive following my town in the 80s. rock n roll was having a resurgence at time. We had the cats however we also had the reverend horton heat, the krewmen, the guana batz, and the Cramps of course. good times.
Got their record for my 16th Bday... man I'm old - and they're just fantastic! What exellent musicians
I am 65 years old and have probably been listening to music for 55 years and in very varied genres. By chance I fell into this concert, it's the first time I've heard this band and I'm more than surprised, they are incredibly good. I don't remember having read or heard about Brian Setzer, much less seeing his name among the best guitarists, which surprises me a lot. To conclude I want to say that it is (or was) an excellent band. MIG Music thank you very much for uploading this video. Greetings from Costa Rica. 🇨🇷
Pura vida!!
They were, believe it or not, popular in the punk rock scene initially. That's how I found out about them, back around 81-82. The first times I saw them they were opening for punk bands. They based themselves in England for awhile as well, early on.
Loving these mostly unknown cats for years . I’m 77 and in Tennessee USA
@@stewpitteejit They made their name in UK in late 70s/early 80s and then supported the Rolling Stones (I think) on a US tour and got known back home.
Look into Brian's music, he's so much more than this.
Interesting enough, if you listen carefully, you might discover that the Stray Cat Strut originally came out decades before the Stray Cats changed the lyrics. It was originally a children’s tune called “The Cat Came Back”.
One of the best bands of the 80s!
Agreed if talking about live bands in 80's
of all times
Yes!! Love their clothes style and haircuts; the whole bands VIBE!!
Real fucking talent there: Brian you rock harder than most!
Powerful performance
I saw them play in Chicago, early to mid 80's, they filled the room very well!
Unici! ... una chitarra, un basso acustico e una mini-batteria, che sberla!!!!
Rock and Roll interpreted as it should be! 🎸 👍
Pretty much in it's purest form right here

Had the pleasure of seeing them live in the 80s at the Warfield and was blown away! Great times!
Stray Cats are bad ass. Brian is outstanding. They make some great noise with such minimal equipment.
What an impressive live sound. All three truly great musicians.
Stray Cats always seemed to hover on the edge... never in the mainstream. They just did their thing... brilliantly!! Setzer was/is a master musician... never achieving the recognition he deserved!! Overdue for the HoF.
Brian Setzer is one of the best performers
Я бы не смог усидеть на месте под такую 🎼 музыку! Я бы встал, и пошол плясать, уж больно музыка танцевальная!!🔥🤗 Автору за загрузку этого концерта лайк и спасибо!!! 🎸🥁💣💥💥💥
I have always loved Rockabilly. Saw Brian in 2014 small Venue in California. I wish I had seen the Stray Cats in the 80's.
Wow oh Wow 😮 At their peak! They sound incredibly amazing! Brian’s voice on point! Just WOW. Super lucky you guys who witnessed this incredible show! If only I can go back in time and be there!
Total Respect.

Saw them in Chicago Summer 82. I've seen Brian Setzer 4 or 5 times. Really great guitarist.
This is one of the leading lights for raw skiffle and enlightened music from America. Congratulations to this band for rock cannot die and provides positive memories of a valuable musical history.
Where has this been hiding. Ive got a couple of Stray Cat cds and a big box set of Rockabilly stuff but this concert has blown my mind and ears......Love it❤😊
Очень талантливый парень! Великолепный гитарист и вокалист ! Мне очень нравиться и стиль и манера исполнения ! Супер ! Браво!!!
Saw them on that tour at the Sunrise Musical Theater. The Busboys warmed them up.The Straycats killed it!!!!
The Busboys were a great R&B band I thought. Good show you got to see back in the day. Good pairing. Lee was heck of a bass player, and Jim is a fine drummer (he still could have stood up and played, but give the poor guys some drums. lol Check out Southern Culture on the Skids. Their drummer plays standing up and has a full kit. Great Southern Rockabilly band as well! If you haven't heard of them they're from Raleigh NC. check out album "Plastic Seat Sweat". There's alot of humor in their lyrics, but 100% serious about the music. And their guitarist can hold his own as well, with them being a 3 piece.) But give it to Brian Setzer for becoming one of "the Great" guitarists in rock and roll. period. and I really like his voice too. Now Go turn that shit up! lol. take care.
The Busboys will fuck anything that moves. They come to my house, the fish stop swimming.
Excellent. Brian shreds guitar
Born in '77
Wouldn't leave mom & dads record player alone so they bought me a tiny red and white striped record player and a few 45s for my 5th birthday
Stray Cat Strut was the first one I played. I was reborn 😊

Saw them at Sturgis in early 90s. Best concert I've seen.
Setzer is an incredible talent. He’s practically a baby here, and he has everything: ridiculous chops, charisma, voice and personality. Lee and Slim were rock solid, to boot.
For a small drum kit and one guitar they sound huge. Guitar is very rich in tone and do a work of 2 guitarist .
brian leave's nothing out.
Yes Sir! Don’t forget that phenomenal stand up bass too, love them!
Saw these guys in '84, man were they great! 14 Karat Soul was the opener and they were fine too.
Always loved their gig they had it going on , cool as cool cat can be ,,, very simple good old rocking roll ,,, Drummer looks soooo cool standing up cig in his mouth beating them drums, love that 50's vibe ,,,
After the highly produced music of the 70s this was so refreshing.
Freakin good. Brian didn't miss one note.
Incredible performance. Saw a re-run of this sometime during the mid nineties, when I was at university and was completely blown away by it. That beautiful panning shot of the river during Lonely Summer Nights always stuck in my mind. Especially because that song wasn’t on ‘Back to the Alley’, my Stray Cats CD. But this was pre-internet, so I had no way of seeing it again. I was finally able to download a copy using E-Mule in the file sharing era. Still have a DVD-R with this concert on it.
Saw them ‘82 in Akron, 83 in Bowling Green, OH. It was a ROCK CONCERT! People singing & dancing the whole time. Great memory.
Go Falcons!
Loved these guys back in the day and saw them live 3x - incredible shows. Last time was at Agora Ballroom in Ft. Lauderdale and was lucky enough to get to the afterpartyin the hotel next door. Brian gave me shit for having a pirate Stray Cats t-shirt - hey you didn’t have a lot of choices back then. He was cool about it cause he knew that meant I was a fan 😉

Very talented. Sure wish I didn’t think I was too cool for them back then. 😂
One of the many I now wish I would've witnessed in their prime.
