The car was once owned by Jon Moss and GM made it as a celebration concept of the hot rod/low rider culture in california at the time. It was made for the LAIMS show. The glass itself was raked back to make it look more slammed which is why the head room is reduced. THe whole roof is 2 inches lowered to be more of a slammed car. Its meant to be a lowrider so the rear was lowered/slammed. The rear side glass is plexi cause they shrunk it down to give it that slammed in the rear look. The noise in the front sounds like the water pump is about to go. Hope that helps

Commented this on the video a day ago but just so people know a little more. It's not Jon Moss of music fame but it reminds me of the 1988 Cadillac Voyage Concept. The one in Demolition man is a 1989 Cadillac Solitaire, really frakkin cool car too. Your car is a Jon Moss car for sure. You can find photos of it with a 59 and a 99 Eldo in bright carousel red like the 70 Pontiac GTO Judge, I think the paint is similar to Orbit Orange (70 GTO also) for this car and was for concept art and to show the progression of design over the years and where it was going. I think it was for a certain show. It might have been featured in a movie also. It looks familiar to me in that sense too. Most likely kept in the GM Toy Box at some point in it's life. Jon is a key figure in concepts. Impala SS, the Chevy Van like your Riptide Blue was because of him. Z24 lumina and Beretta, ZL1 Camaro, SSR. All his babies and many many more. He's a great guy and I hope you reach out to him! The Mid 90s Impala SS wouldn't have happened without him and Tim Allen.

I remember the car and recall it’s background. It was commission by Cadillac’s CEO John “Jack” Smith, and was built in Collaboration with California Street Rods and Steve Rosenblum (brand manager for Eldorado). Its intention was basically to elevate the Cadillac brand within the custom car community. Finished in what was dubbed “Ignite Orange”, not a single section of this car’s exterior was untouched. But the most groundbreaking part was that it had satellite radio, which was still nearly unheard of for 1999. It made it into a few publications. Neat find.

I'm pretty sure I worked on the clay model of this vehicle in the early 90's in the old Cadillac Advanced 4 studio at the Warren Tech center. The first floor of Design, excepting the Truck studios and Saturn, was for all the Advanced(concept) studios and the second floor was for Production studios.
Back in those days, as a new sculptor, I was rotated throughout pretty much the whole building and only spent a few weeks in Adv 4. so I never really saw the finished model on the patio.

This is what I was able to find about this car
"The 2000 Cadillac Eldorado Concept embodies the spirit of a modern hot rod with a nostalgic twist, developed by California Street Rods of Huntington Beach. Derived from the successful Eldorado Touring Coupe range, this concept vehicle from Cadillac showcases a blend of retro aesthetics and contemporary design. While likely intended as a styling exercise for the Detroit Motor Show, the Eldorado Concept brings a fresh take on the iconic nameplate.
Taking inspiration from the best-selling luxury coupe in the US, the design team embarked on a transformation of the Eldorado. The most notable changes include a four-inch lowering of the body, accompanied by a 10-degree rake to both the windscreen and rear window angles to accommodate the new lowered roofline. Further design refinements involve the reduction in size of the side and quarter window openings. The rear tires are concealed by full-length bumper skirts, while the overall look is enhanced by retro-inspired wheels, tail lights, headlights, and indicators.
Under the hood, the Eldorado Concept retains the potent 300 bhp Northstar engine that's utilized in the standard Eldorado lineup. This engine not only adds to the vehicle's performance but also contributes to its dynamic appeal.
While the Eldorado Concept serves as a design showcase at the Detroit Motor Show, it effectively captures the spirit of the classic hot rod while blending it with contemporary luxury and performance. With its retro touches and modern engineering, the Cadillac Eldorado Concept presents a unique vision of what a modern reinterpretation of a beloved classic could be."

It looks to me that all the reduction in the overall body height came from increasing the rake angle of the "A" and "C" pillars. That probably accounts for 2" of the reduced height. The other couple inches probably came from lowering the suspension height.

"GM vice-president and Cadillac general manager John Smith said after the unveiling: “The EldoRODo is Cadillac’s way of celebrating the creativity of the hot rod culture in Southern California. For years the flair of these vehicles has expressed personalities of the builder and driver, similar to what the Eldorado has done for its owner base over the past 50 years.” Eldorado brand manager Steven Rosenblum, meanwhile, gushed: “Having spent some time in California, I realised very quickly that hot rod builders have an impact on the designs and applications of technology on production cars.”
He went on to add: “We didn’t want to miss the opportunity to have a little fun with one of our production cars that has always embodied the spirit and style of California. Eldorado continues to be the best-selling prestige luxury coupe in the United States and has the highest owner loyalty of any coupe in its segment.” He neglected to mention that the average age of its customers was 69. The upshot was that this confection had to appeal as much to baby boomers - people who remembered customising when it had taken root way back when - as to the latter-day cool kids in Cadillac’s bid to attract a more youthful audience "

The thing about the Northstar is that, when it's working, it's a wonderful engine. Smooth, effortless torque delivery with a nice fat power-band - and it makes great noises (especially with a performance exhaust). And, if you get ahead of the gasket issues, they can be made reliable long-term. But if you don't deal with the gaskets, either preemptively or right when a problem first develops, forget about it, you'll just have to throw away the whole car. Once the heads are trashed, it's totally impractical to fix one of those engines and, outside of a few insane people, it's impractical to swap in a replacement.
But, because I am insane, and an engineer with more ability to read technical manuals than I have common sense, back in 2008 I did a full Northstar engine swap. This was on a beautifully garage kept 96 STS with a ruined motor that I got dirt cheap (it was headed for the scrap yard). I've gone through the process of dropping that front subframe, pulling off all the accessories, mating the engine up to the 4T80E, etc. It's one seriously long process that would cost Hoovie's-level money for a certified tech to do the work (so many fasteners, harnesses, clips, things to be routed, etc..).
I was also lucky enough to have access to a bay at a dealership (complete with lift, diagnostic equipment and tools) because I was good friends with the owner of said dealership. I sourced a crated, built in 1997, 0-mile L37 Northstar though eBay Motors (that even came with a new PCM). With the new engine, carefully taken care of, I never had any problems with that car. I sold it about 7 years ago, but I know the current owner, and he takes excellent care of the car, and it's still running well at about 100k on the replacement engine, but he also decided to do the head gaskets preemptively at some point, which is why it's still running well.
Moral of the story: people who buy 90's era Northstar powered Cadillacs are completely insane. But I'd totally do it again, and likely will own another Northstar Cadillac, even if I think it's a terrible idea. Do as I say (don't ever buy one), not as I do (totally get one).

Have had a '98, that I got from my Father, for 20 years. The 'infamous ' head gasket problem occurred on the hottest day of the year one summer. I ended up buying an entire studded engine from Northstar Performance in Canada. That was over a decade ago and still running strong, although it does only has 40k kilometers on it.

    • @ralphinator2
      @ralphinator2 Před 5 měsíci

The problem isn't the gaskets. The problem is the head studs stretch the threads in the aluminum block. In later models, they use larger head studs.

    • @ArKay-nj2nh
      @ArKay-nj2nh Před 5 měsíci

Yes, and No. The heads use bolts from the factory, and they're threaded into the aluminum block. After a failure, they should be replaced with Studs, and you could get a Stud Kit to replace the original bolts. @@ralphinator2

One suggestion is I would look into those radio where when you turn the key, a screen would pop out and up giving you a nice size display. There are radio that supports both sides camera and and a backup camera. This way you don’t need to have two display mounted on your pillars and you can add a backup camera on the rear. It’ll have spilt screen for both side but switch to one side full screen when you use a turn signal then resume to spilt screen or GPS etc.
You would also want to upgrade the side camera that already in there with a newer camera due to better resolution and nighttime views.

Ok. My comment disappered earlier. Got a link from another website that describes the following.
    2000 Cadillac Eldorodo Concept
The 2000 Cadillac Eldorado Concept embodies the spirit of a modern hot rod with a nostalgic twist, developed by California Street Rods of Huntington Beach.

It could even be operated with a magnet or something. I’ve seen many ways to hide a back up way to open a door, or even a mechanical method in case the battery dies.

You know if it wasn't for the reliability issues, the 32 valve Northstar is an absolute monster engine. So, so, sooo much room on them to make them insane but there just isn't a lot of aftermarket options given their reputation and how rare they are to be used in performance applications.

@@brettconv83 Cadillac, Mercedes, Audi and BMW had one assignment in the late 80s. Build a DOHC 32 Valve V8 to compete with Toyota/Lexus. Ford sat back and waited to see if GM was going to fumble the assignment. Well, Cadillac did fumble on it by trying to using the same engine design as the Toyota 1UZ, hence the location of the starter which is hidden under the intake plenum. They also fumbled by designing weak head studs. In 1992, Ford told Cadillac/GM to step aside so that they can show them how an American 32V V8 is properly built. Ford came out with the 32V Intech for Lincoln (and the Cobra Mustang) and I havent heard any horror stories. But the Cadillac Northstar is a good engine once the upgraded Northstar Performance head bolts are installed along with periodic coolant flushes and oil changes.

@@brettconv83 It is a common misconception. It really is in an excellent spot. Yes, much harder to service, but protected. They last a lot lot longer in there, seldom needing to be replaced. No one complains that pistons are so hard to replace for the same reason. You will need to replace them just as often as the starter.
The head bolts were the real issue with that engine. You can fix it, but it should have been addressed in design, not as an aftermarket.

If the engine was taken care of and the head bolts taken care of they were pretty reliable cars and were very comfortable. My 98 went cross country when I moved from the west coast to the east coast. It wasn't hard to spend 10-12 hours in those comfortable seats.
I owned two of this generation Eldorados, a 94 Sport Coupe and a 98 Touring Coupe, both bought used, both had history of the engines being removed to fix case half leaks, I think the 98 had the head stud upgrade. I also owned a 03 STS which had all the improvements over the years to the FWD generation of the Northstar, it was a solid car.
For $12k, that's a pretty good investment I think in a car you can take to car shows and draw a lot of attention with.
For the door poppers, I wonder if they might have went the easy route and used the stock key fobs to activate them. Maybe a $15 remote from eBay paired to the car might be all you need. Since it has no door handles it might be as easy as just the unlock button to open the doors.

Because we were 2 miles away from the main dealer and the mechanical shop it was common to do the body work, paint, then send it to the main bldg to finish any mechanical work. It was common when they were hit in the rear for the mufflers to fold under the car. So the body guys would cut them off to get them out of the way. Without the mufflers it sounded like a completely different motor. It would burble like a big block and would actually shake the car when revved off idle. Ive never heard such a change from no mufflers before or since.

What you're calling "channeling" I believe is actually referred to as "sectioning". "Channeling" is when there are channels cut in the floor pans so the frame can tuck up into them. It's the exact opposite of a body lift on 4x4. Sectioning is also what it sounds like. They cut a section out of the side of the car and stitch it back together. The ancient tri-fecta of chopped (chopping the roof off and lowering it), channeled, and sectioned is the typical recipe on extreme hot rods like that.

Hoovie, trucks in Europe are now on sale with camera "mirrors", MAN, DAF.. Mercedes and more have them on sale or are working on it right now, and we have it in the truck simulator games from SCS and it makes a big difference, they give you better vis at night in low light and the massive mirrors that used to be in the way at intersections are no longer there! :D Its awesome! I'm talking SEMI TRUCKS... as you guys over there call it! xD

Its really cool how the rear exhaust tips almost mimic the shape of the rear brake lights. Awesome overall exterior design.

The air stem on the wheel can be unscrewed and screwed into the other wheels to pump them up. The caps are just to cover the valve while driving

I was surprised the wizard didn't immediately know or realize that after a few seconds. I was actually surprised the adapter was still with the car after nearly 25 years.

A key fob should be able to be programmed pretty easy, i bet they used the factory keyless entry fob, which on early gms is as easy as holding down the driver side power lock button for 15 seconds ....
Its worth sorting this thing out for sure. The hidden valve stem is something ive only seen twice. Awesome stuff
