I spent 6 months with a hole over my shower from leaking upstairs water pipes. Filled with black mold. Every week the Plumber was coming. The AC was shared amongst all the tenants, so some froze in the summer and sweated in the winter. When the boiler system worked there was hot water. The boiler was always needing repairs.

The problem isn't usually the landlord it's the company they subsource to like real estate agents. A family friend was renting out his property while he was away in another state, real estate agency was telling him everything was great, only a trip he decided to pop in and check and there was tons of shit broken that he simply was not told about and he was fuming, needless to say the issues were repaired and he now manages directly with the tenant.

Kicking out the mobster seemed a bit unwise, Terry Tycoon could wake up with a horse head in his bed after that.
But yeah, this was sadly realistic. The old "using the worthless uncle instead of skilled labour" is rather common in any larger city. Paying 60% of your income in rent is likewise very common and I know people who lived in crappy apartments with shared kitchen but those were student to be fair, fleecing them and letting them live as as animals are also not unusual, particularly in cities with famous universities.
I had my rent doubled in 10 years which isn't quite as fast as Terry did it, but it was a rather crappy apartment so it got overpriced like no tomorrow before I moved out. I never met my landlord in person (just his uncle and 2 polish plumbers he hired in to fix my shower, and while some polish plumbers surely are very competent, this were the discount guys) but I always imagined him to look a bit like Terry but maybe with a bit of the Monopoly guy in him too.
In fact, I am renting a large house in the country side today and it is still cheaper then my crappy 37 1/2 square meter apartment in Malmö (yeah, I am a Swede, no, I am not a coffee drinker, I drink tea like any civilized person, thankyou).

@@funnychanisback7679 its cuz theyre the reason why it costs so much just to rent a shitty studio not even in a minor city much less major. and ya cant live in the country any more its 2k in the middle of bumfuck no where for a 1 bedroom apartment where i live. and thats just renting. im not paying 1M for a rundown house with no yard that only has 2 bedrooms and a single bathroom and a shed for a garage thats a 2 hr commute to work. Landlords love jacking up prices and refusing to fix things to kick people out so they can break contracts without having to the tenant but have the tenant pay them so they can renvote the place and sell the building for 3x what the paid for making people homeless and broke. Landlords in major cities do it every day they will shut off the electricity, heat and water to force ya out and then make ya pay them 3x your rent payment to get out of your lease. hell ive seen people do that in my hometown who were individual landlords for houses just cuz they didnt feel like sending money on a plumber/roofer/electrician to fix a major problem. they know most people dont have the time or money to waste in court to sue them so they get away with it. which is why its now impossible to own a house in america/england/canada and probably other countries without being rich already, winning the lottery or getting an pay out from an accident or an inheritance. people say tenants are just lazy and need to get better jobs but its kinda hard to do that in a recession, increase schooling costs and the fact 80% of most people's paychecks are going to housing and most people work 2 jobs now.

The best is when you think you may have a house, and some big investment firm buys it up for 20k over the asking price because they know they're going to instantly start reaping profits once they rent it out.

To finish off you spend a week at one of those outdoor team building camps with other potential landlords screaming at them and trying to convince them to sign the sneakiest contracts one can create!
