    History of sprouted grains:
    Grains were traditionally stored in damp environments, causing them to sprout. The sprouted grains were ground into flour for bread.
    bio-kinetics.com/blogs/news-f...
    Rice has been fermented for thousands of years, creating more readily available nutrition and gut healthy bacteria.
    www.sciencedirect.com/science...
    Sourdough is also a great way to make nutrition more available and stop the power of phytic acid from preventing absorption BUT note that this study found einkorn did not loose the phytic acid when prepared in bread using sourdough but was STILL very low on phytic acid.

    Einkorn proves to have MUCH less phytic acid than modern wheat as this chart shows. It remains the easiest to digest. Learn more about einkorn at my post:

    This is the best video I have found on sprouted berries for both einkorn and regular wheat! The question you answered was how much growth of the sprouted grain you need to accomplish the benefit of the grain. I have a granddaughter living with us who is gluten intolerant and I like taste of hard red winter wheat berries fresh ground with Mock Mill so I do both grains and clean out the mill with rice between grains.

    Going to grow some einkorn this winter! Really looking forward to trying to sprout it after harvest, such a good idea.

      That's so exciting. I've been considering it as well. A farmer friend offered us a corner of his fields last year to grow it but we declined (too hard to care for small growth that's 10 miles away!) But now I'm considering growing it on our own property. I'd love to hear how it goes!

      Oh thanks! I love it too. I didn't make it but a relative did. After using for several years they past it on to me. She said she made it at a community college class. I believe they held it for the community and it was specifically on making your own dehydrator. The trays are made with window screen mesh. The heat is made by eight lightbulbs in the bottom. There is also a fan to circulate the heat. It's great :)

    I wonder what I'm doing wrong. Got some einkorn, organic, sproutable berries. Soaked them for 16 hours in distilled water. Drained them off. Rinsed three times a day. Its been 48 hours now since I drained the initial soak, and still no sprouts showing. Thoughts?

    I am waiting for my Einhorn flour to arrive. I don't have a dehydrator or a grinding mill & I was wondering if I could get some organic Einhorn grain & sprout it & cut some up to add to the loaves of bread I want to bake. Has anyone tried this & had success with the outcome?
    Thank you. I live on a sailboat ⛵, so there's not much room for a lot of equipment. Thank you❣

      Way to be creative! I haven't heard of cutting up sprouted einkorn. It would be hard but possible. Smashing it might be an easier option (like people do with candy canes in a gallon plastic bag and rolling pin etc.). A blender, food processor or old coffee grinder can also work depending on how course you're looking to make it. Be sure to let it completely dry before breaking it apart for easier grinding. Good luck! I'm sure the whole grain will add some good texture and flavor to it!

      Thank you❣ i
      I have a small Cuisinart food Processor that I can use, even out away from shore as I have a generator 👍😊❣
      I did get a FRESKO Vacuum Packer & I am thrilled with it as I don't have to lift a lid or press down corners or lock sides❣ I Just slide the vacuum sealer bag in & press seal, then put what you want in it & choose: Dry, Moist, or seal. It even gives you a little beep when it's done so I don't have to stand there watching it do it's job & wait for a light to go out❣🙆‍♀️
      I've had double wrist surgeries, & now that I'm older & the weather seems to be changing all the time & I feel like a barometer 😁🤭, good on some days & bad on other's 😔!
      The WEVAC 8" or 11" wide bags at 150' long are great❣🙆‍♀️ I love the built in slide cutter, it saves sooo much time, all I have to do is measure out how long of a bag I'll need, slide cut it & seal the end (I add a double seal at the bottom, just a bit of insurance) the top will be opened & just what will be needed will be removed & then resealed. The other good thing about the FRESKO V.P. is it draws only 1 amp of AC power (110 - 120 volts)❣❣ I wish I had this a long time ago😁👍❣It can be used while out sailing 🙆‍♀️ Whoo Whooo!
      I will be vacuum packing my Einkorn flour until I'm ready to make my bread.
      I add organic sprouted seeds to my breads now & the added nutrition is awesome & it tastes really good in sandwiches or toasted 👍❣
      (Sorry for sounding like an ad, I'm just so happy I found this gem while looking for one that wouldn't require me to too much pushing ot twisting with my poor hands).
      I love the extra crunch & texture in my breads 🍞 👍❣🙆‍♀️ Have you ever experimented with mixing the ancient grains? I'd imagine they'd be delicious!!
      I one day want to get a grain mill, yours is adorable & I love the wood look🥰❣🙋‍♀️ God bless you ❣
      Thank you for your quick reply 🤗🥰 happy baking❣

    Can you use an oven to dry the grain instead of a dehydrator?

    • @HilltopintheValley
      @HilltopintheValley  Před 9 měsíci

      You'd have to get the oven very low to keep the grain intact. It's recommended under 140 degrees Fahrenheit in order to keep all the grains seed in tact. You'd also need to open the oven a crack to allow air flow. farm-energy.extension.org/grain-drying-energy-efficiency-checklist-and-tips/

    So after you go through this process and you have flour, do you still soak the flour before you bake?

    • @HilltopintheValley
      @HilltopintheValley  Před rokem

      No. once sprouted, the grain has already gone through the process. It won't "unsprout," so the flour made from it has already been broken down in a way that will help it be more digestible when eaten. You're good to go.

    Hi, fromw here did you buy einkorn berries that sprout?

    • @HilltopintheValley
      @HilltopintheValley  Před 2 lety +1

      I get most of my berries from Einkorn.com that farms in ID. I've also purchased from Azure Standard before. Note that some of their berries have the hull attached which makes it a little harder to grind while taking off random hulls. The sprout is Very small though. It is much harder to see than on modern wheat.

    Where do you buy your Einkorn? I bought some from Jovial, and they were dehulled and I couldn't sprout them. They say that the Einkorn and other heirloom wheat berries don't have much gluten. Could it be that there is less phytic acid?

    • @HilltopintheValley
      @HilltopintheValley  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes! I have a video you should check out on this- czcams.com/video/suOhp6H-OEQ/video.html ... look in the information on a link about phytic acid. There is also a post that you can see where I like to get my einkorn here: hilltopinthevalley.com/beginners-guide-how-to-bake-with-einkorn-flour/ ...I've done jovial for all-purpose but I like to mill my own with a U.S. company from the Northwest :) Thanks for watching. Glad to have you stop by!

      @@HilltopintheValley After writing you, I checked out other videos and yes there is less gluten and phytic acid. But I tried sprouting Jovial's Einkorn wheat berries, as I said, but they never sprouted. I realized I mentioned that they were de hulled and thought that was the reason but I was wrong, you have to dehull the ancient wheat grains. So what you got was de hulled berries, too, and they sprouted. Wonder why mine didn't.
