I really appreciate the Hi-Team/Lo-Team/Sketchy-team breakdown this episode. It's a nice way to show how "too Lo" is dangerous and not worth it.
Especially the helmet. Like, do you trust your brain in a $70 piece of plastic filled with packing paper? Lol

@IHateMyAccountName just saying that's not how gforces work like at all they all would have experienced the same amount of gs from the same highth with the same weight the fact they said the test showed wildly different numbers was a scare tactic to keep people from buying a helmet that was cheap but still did the job just fine
@@JamesJones-tu4pq well, a heavier helmet would have more energy to injure your neck and back in an accident. I paid an extra $200 for the same model helmet in carbon for snow-machining because it was in my mind safer. It also came with a fidlock chin strap which was probably worth it alone
@@natec599 In Donut's drop test, all helmets would have the same energy at impact because they would all be travelling at the same speed. The difference is how the lining absorbs and disperses the energy at the time of impact. This test by Donut is utterly useless since most helmets will never be subjected to such circumstances. The same goes for driving a vehicle over the helmet. Quite honestly, if you fall on your head from a height of 10ft+, that helmet is not going to save your life.
Lighter helmets generally mean less structural integrity. In other words, less safe. If you're truly worried about neck injuries, you should be wearing a neck brace. Whether it's something as cheap as a simple foam donut style neck brace or a HANS device doesn't really matter. A proper neck brace will help support the weight of the helmet, as well as prevent the types of movement that typically result in neck injuries.

Digging this 2-team approach. Having you guys separate the footage and tests between the garage and outside, with different testers, was awesome. Gives some nice variety to the video, and lets every presenter get some lines in.

Some people really don’t realize how high quality these shows are. The editing and pacing. The green screen and lighting work. The effects. Awesome!
One safety comment, on removing seats. I'm sure you guys are aware but you didn't mention it at least not so far in the video, some seats have airbags built in. Disconnect your battery and let it discharge before you go fiddling around with those unless you feel like having one explode in your face.
Was just going to write this. The airbag system is really sensetive, and disconnecting parts of the system without having the battery disconnected can make them blow.

I can't believe this wasn't mentioned.
And regardless if the seat has an airbag in it, all cars within the last 20 years have occupancy sensors to disable the airbags if no one is sitting in the seat. Disconnecting these will cause an airbag light and potentially not deploy the airbag in a collision.
On the track you don't want airbags, because of cages and helmets etc, but most people watching these videos are going to drive both on the street an track, this is a big miss in my opinion.
I wish you guys did the final wrap-up shots from the last 2 hi/lo series. Like "yeah, Hi team won, but is it REALLY worth that much more money?" When James and Nolan would sit outside the shop and break down the price-to-performance. It's nice to hear which one is definitively better, but is it $1,000+ better?

It’s the definitive part of the show, IMO.
I don't want to detract from this episode being way better than the last couple, but I do agree that brining this back would be one of only a couple ways to improve this current hi/low series.
Still though, I want to say this episode was a cut above the last one.

This is one of my favorite donut videos I’ve see in awhile, it was very informative as always, pretty funny, and the different segments and usage of everyone of in this one was super nice, like with Jeremiah and Justin on the experiment stuff outside.

I love this season of hi lo so much. I love especially how this season has incorporated everyone into one show. I didn’t even realize until today that that’s the reason I think I like this season so much. You basically have all the hosts from all the shows and a lot of people that we don’t get to see normally all together in one video and I think it’s awesome.
The way you guys just enjoy each other’s company and have fun makes this so much better . All you need are real homies to live a fulfilling life

Yo this is my favorite episode. And y’all got a lot! The moments where it was just both Teams, hanging out and making jokes, was the most genuine thing I have seen. Dope episode!
Sick episode, guys! Really digging the enhanced production value and the camera work gets better with literally every upload. Having the breakouts with Jerry and Justin also just hit a sweet spot for me, really feels like one of the old n gold car shows like Top Gear!

Honestly don’t agree with the burn test. The racequip didn’t seem to have literal holes burned through it during the burn test, sparco however did
Gotta remember they did admit to using a direct flame that was 3x the heat you’d find in your car just to over exaggerate it. Who knows what would’ve happened had they turned the temp down a notch.
@@kevincrenshaw9588 fair point but even then, with that high temp the racequip still had no holes burned through it handle the high temp better so it’ll likely handle the lower temp better
So RaceQuip looks like solid gear for the money, and ideal for those of us just starting out with our race cars. Sparco is what I'd get with fat sponsor dollars but I'm totally impressed with what Low Car is getting this series.
Sparco also has the most budget friendly option in seats, the Sprint. It's about $400, FIA approved, and one of the narrowest seats available. It was the only one I could find the fit in my Z3, also really popular for Miatas for the same reason.

Not sure how the sparco suit won their test. it had holes burnt in it and the racequip did not have holes.

Personally I think it would have been good info to share that those yellow plugs that were disconnected were part of the airbag/srs system(s). Any yellow connectors or wires are for those systems. They may be passenger occupancy sensors or seatbelt squibs. Occupancy sensors tell the vehicle to deploy the airbag/seatbelt squib when an impact is detected and it senses an occupant in the seat. If nobody is in the seat it’ll prevent the passenger airbag(s) and squib from deploying. The seatbelt squib tightens the seatbelt when an impact is detected. Since the topic of the day is driver/occupant safety it would have been good to cover those topics informing anyone who doesn’t know that they’re disabling the whole airbag system by disconnecting even one of those components.

one thing to note on HiCar's harnesses- the 2" harness is only rated for use in combination with a HANS device. Using them without will do some serious damage if you're in a crash. Be safe guys
Definitely something to think about. My project car is getting a cage and racing harness, but the car was built in the 70s where all you had was a lap belt so that is probably still a safety upgrade. On a newer car I wouldnt remove the airbags and factory belts
In actual use, the 3” harness is way more comfortable over the 2” … low car for the win this time around

Seat are great modifications, help with handling your vehicle, less weight, more safe, and they look cooler than stock seats. It's a win win all around.
If you guys do another low-high series you should keep a stock version of the car for a control group to see how much the car changes after all the mods.

Before even watching this video I wanna say thanks for doing a comparison for something like this because, I have really been wanting to install a racing seat in my mudding rig for the pilot seat and there's so many options I can't decide so I just want to settle for a completely metal seat although I don't think that would be a good idea since I do drive the truck a considerable amount

It feels like getting the higher end harness system on the low car seats is a really good mix. A couple hundred bucks compared with the thousand+ seat savings is worth the comfort and stability.

Years ago, actually, decades back, I was a parts manager at a Honda motorcycle shop and yes, he had our own race team. On the wall, near our helmet display, for all the budget minded folks, we had a poster that said, "if you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet"..... We sold a whole lot of expensive helmets.
I have had several Sparcos (mid tier option) and several Brides (high tier option) and i can say that the Sparcos are always great in feel but the brides always feel GREAT. Hard to explain but they just have that extra feeling in everything from looks, feel and quality. If it's worth twice the price however is up to you but as in most things the last % in quality/effort is usually the most expensive.

You need to bring back the Hi/low wrap up at the end back. I like the "what you would buy" part of it. It will almost certainly be nicer equipment for big money, especially if you aren't buying.

Have you ever considered testing your fully built High and Low cars in a series of challenges then building a 'Mid' car out of the two that is made of your recommended parts over the series and testing that?

With my experiance with helmets, there are the complete base level where the certifications are met and they are great helmets. Going more expensive only means some more features, lighter contruction, and possibly slightly more saftey. My helmet experiance is mainly in ski racing helmets, but I think it applies quite well here

As you can see these are complex subjects and seatbelts are a deep but KEY matter

Hi-Low has been the best series in Donut's history. Love every minute of it. And not just because it has Subaru the greatest affordable car ever.
you guys should try the Recaro Profi SPG (more secure) or the Pole Position (more comfort) next time. Those are my go to seats

I know I’ve seen y’all test safety equipment before.
But I’m here for it, because it’s entertaining, and it never hurts to remind people that safety gear is VERY important.
So happy my FIst came with Recaro seats for me at least they are a snug fit. And definitely can say having had vehicles with flat bulsters. Doing even basic autocross is way better not spending your time keeping yourself upright helped a lot.
