  • In last night's win over the New York Knicks in Madison Square Garden, Steph Curry broke Ray Allen’s all-time 3-point record with 2,974 career 3-pointers. Nick Wright reacts to the record, and tells Chris Broussard and Kevin Wildes why he believes Steph Curry being the greatest shooter of all time is one of the only inarguable facts in the NBA. How big a deal is Steph Curry’s all-time 3-point record?

    Chris is wrong on this one. The 3-pt record represents how Steph changed the game. A 20 point lead with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter is no longer garbage time. More competition. More entertainment for fans. That’s what the 3-pt record represents.

    Nah, I disagree with Chris whole heartedly. He would have been right 10 yrs ago, definitely 20 yrs ago when the 3 was just this way to get an extra point but it was low percentage so teams didn’t really shoot them unless the person was completely wide open or you were down by 2 with the clock running out. But this is Steph Curry’s NBA, where literally everyone shoots 3s all the time. In fact the 3 is the first option and if you can’t get that up, then you “settle” for a 2. In this NBA the 3 is the most important shot and Steph shoots it better than anyone who has ever lived. He single handedly made it a big deal.

    • @SupremeGon
      @SupremeGon Před 2 lety +2

      I'd say it was him and Klay respectfully. Sure Steph got the record but Klay top 3 shooter all time as well let's not forget that.

    • @runegeezy
      @runegeezy Před 2 lety

      I would say Klay is a BETTER shooter than Wardell Jr. Fundamentally. Cleaner shot. Better form. Picture perfect release. And he can get way hotter than Wardell Jr. because of this. But he doesn't have the ball in his hands all the time and doesn't have the same first option mentality.
      On top of that. This league has had 3 point specialists for decades. Coaches and management just never pushed it like they do today until Wardell Jr. and Klay started making shots so prolifically. We're they the only ones capable of making these shots? Clearly not. Lots of shooters can shoot. It was only a matter of time before the game progressed in this direction. If you can get more points, get more points. Duh. It isn't something new one player discovered. Every team has shooters. Some better than others. But they aren't doing anything new no one new about before. I used to watch the Wizard Walt Williams post up in the corner in the early 90s and knock down 3s all day. Mitch Ritchmond was a clutch 3 point shooter and got a ton of 4 point plays. I myself as a kid used to shoot deep 3s as a philosophy in the 90s way before Wardell Jr. Was ever in the league. All I did was shoot 3s. Half court. 3 quarter court. 5 feet outside the line. I didn't care. I just wanted to get a quick shot off before the defender could get to me. And I was money. And I wasn't the only one. I used to go to basketball camps ever summer in the early 90s and every ball player in the area was there and they had some killer 3 point shooters. Back in 92-96 when I would go. This isn't anything new. He's just the first one to break Ray Allen's record. Good on him for being the one. But there will be others. And it isn't new or spectacular. It's a natural and inevitable progression.

    • @SupremeGon
      @SupremeGon Před 2 lety +3

      @@runegeezy I'd agree if there were more players in the league even right now that shoots as high of a clip as them two and as efficiently. They are the two best shooters in the league and it's not close.
      I'm sure there were shooters across all eras but like you said progression was inevitable and out came Steph and Klay.
      The league didn't believe this was sustainable yet they made everyone believe and changed the game entirely.
      Sure the 3 pointer isnt new but the way they shoot it and have made the 3 pointer the most important part of basketball is new.
      The game has changed thanks to those guys so while I hear what you are saying I respectfully disagree.
      Also shooting threes at camp and AAU or what not cool and all but to do it as consistently as those two in the nba is a whole different ball game. Especially Steph who teams game plan for and still get torched on a nightly basis. Nobody saying Steph created the 3 point shot it's just he's the best to ever shoot em. And Klay isn't a better shooter than Steph as Steph can shoot from literally anywhere at anytime. Klay a spot up shooter primarily and to just assume Klay could do what Steph could do simply because he can shoot is crazy. There's so much that goes into curry game that Klay just doesn't have to do.

    • @Bakuru
      @Bakuru Před 2 lety

      @@runegeezy All due respect, but that is not a fair conclusion to make.
      If we went by your logic as far as how the progression works, then by that logic, no person past a certain point in a development of a sport should be celebrated for anything. Because they won't be doing anything that didn't exist already. And if you think that's true, you should never watch a sport again.
      Realizing that progression is inevitable, doesn't make the pinpoints of that progression, or the impact of it, any less special or strong. Steph has created an environment that no one thought possible before him. Yeah some people maybe thought that it would eventually be, but not now, and not at this rate. He literally changed the formula for how to be successful in winning games. You can't take that away from him just because he didn't invent anything. He may not have invented it, but he made it a staple that no one thought it would be. That's spectacular, no matter how you slice it

    I firmly agree with Nick (doesn't happen a lot) that you literally cannot say that anyone else is a better shooter than Steph. He's just breaking his own records at this point, and has been doing so for the last few years. The only thing left is to eclipse his own teammate Klay in most 3's in a single game (which he actually did in the All Star game, but that doesn't count) which, much like Ray Allen's record, seems like an inevitability.

    Steph is somewhere around 89th place on the all-time fields goals made list. As of today he's 9,261 behind Kareem's record of 15,837. For years I've thought this record will never be broken, even if LeBron pass Kareem's scoring record (because of the three point shot) I don't think he'll break the Field Goals made record.

    I’ve been saying this for two years, we need to wait 15-20 years before we can really look at and appreciate Steph 3’s records. This is the beginning the 3 point era. It’s impossible to fully judge how great this is, because it could be the norm going forward. Steph is clearly the best shooter we’ve seen so far, but it’s unfair to compare him to past players because they weren’t given the same opportunity and we don’t know how many if anybody in future will compete for these records. We need to see if Steph is the only one who could or if he is just the beginning. Going forward looking at 3’s we need to look at it as the “Before Curry” and “After Curry” era’s.

      Past Players were shooting less and easier shots than curry and much worse efficiency. It's fair to compere them, it's not like steph has just shot more of the same shots on same %. If Raggie or Ray shot 9 threes per game, they 3p % would take massive hit

      It’s insane you all don’t see it. The entire philosophy and game is different today. In the past a 3 point specialist was just that. A specialist. Not someone you build your team or philosophy around. If a 3 point shooter could have been the main star of a team before more players would have perfected their craft and got better at it. That’s why it’s unfair because todays NBA encourages it where in the past it didn’t. I’m not saying former players would have been as good as Steph but it’s unfair to compare them because we can never truly know. Whereas going forward in the current NBA where 3’s is the new system. Guys Lebron James is #11 on the all time 3 point list. Don’t tell me NBA isn’t different. Dame is #10 and Harden #4. This is clearly not just something only Curry is doing. He is just doing it the best. And only in time can we truly tell where his greatness will end.

    • @blondasak4696
      @blondasak4696 Před 2 lety +1

      @@kingmeup21 like idk Bird was? Or Nash? Guys that were great 3pt shooters always could have been the mvps of their teams. But you need more than just 3pt shooting, and Ray and Reggie didn't have the handles, passing etc. Ofc now it's different, but it wasn't when Step came in. Even after 2015, people were saying that jump shooting teams couldn't win. Steph came to the league that was not much different than when Reggie and Rey came in. Steph was known as great 3pt shooter and was drafted 7, Rey Allen was drafted 5, while his Best atribute was also 3pt shot. And Reggie was like 11, you do not take "just specialist" at 5 or even 11 pick. For me the biggest change is that close to everyone needs to be at least decent 3pt shooter, and if you want to be picked high in draft you need much better shooting than 10 years ago.

    • @kingmeup21
      @kingmeup21 Před 2 lety

      @@blondasak4696 literally why I said the before and after curry era’s. Because Curry changed the game. The exact reasons highschool coaches have been complaining because everyone wants to shoot 3’s and be flashy like Curry. And with shooting being a legitimate philosophy now in NBA (with right star of course) going forward it’s likely we are going to see a lot more star shooters because that’s what the current generations are wanting to be. So in 15-20 years if multiple people are passing the former record and getting close to Curry it won’t take away from his greatness or what he did but puts it into a different context. I’m not saying he isn’t great or best shooter. But this record could easily be something that get passed consistently in the future. Curry might just be the first or the only one. Only time will tell. But the fact a guy like Lebron is #11 shows just how much the NBA has changed. Lebron is going to finish in top 10 of 3’s before he retires. That is more then enough proof this record is not the same as it was 10 years ago….

    I'm not even sure people realize how insanely far out of reach this record is gonna be if Steph stays healthy. I wouldn't be surprised if he hits close to 5000 threes before he hangs em up (I don't think he'll quite get to 5000, but the fact that he can even get close to that is unfathomable). Think about it: once he gets up there in age and his athleticism declines, he can still be a catch-and-shoot guy, a la Klay Thompson or Ray Allen. He'll just be the greatest catch-and-shoot player ever. So he'll be able to age fairly well and play longer. I give him three more peak years if he stays healthy, then maybe three more after that. He averages 200+ threes a year, so he'd be somewhere around 4500 before it's all said and done.

Pete Maravich is another old school shooter with range that could easily challenge the record.
