You forgot the fact that the Metriodvania genre was in its infancy, and the developers of Metroid for the Nintendo Entertainment System were testing the limits of new technology while experimenting with a lot of interesting ideas… such as programming on duct tape.

Those zebetite doors or whatever are tracked by the password, at least in the NES version. I assume they're tracked on the FDS version as well.
It's worth noting passwords track current loadzone but save files don't, so it's not a direct 1:1 thing. But a very good sign!
SomecallmeJohnny's Metriod 1 review has a very detailed breakdown of what the passwords does and how it works, and also names the poor programmer who had to make this game on duck tape.

Yeah it's bad. It's a tiny capsule of annoyance and frustration.
I really like the Metroid series (though I admit I have not played them all yet, including Dread), but I think the first game was way too artificially hard. I wanted to play through all the games in order, but I gave up playing the series in Norfair because of how unfair and brutal it was ( I played and got 112% on Hollow Knight before checking out this game, so trust me, I have played and had fun on hard challenges before). Thankfully, Metroid Zero Mission fixed almost every problem I had with the NES game (and I actually enjoyedmy time playing it), however the remake doesn't cover up the fact that the original game may be the most unfair game I have ever played ON THE SECOND AREA.

I would love to see a Ghost of Tsushima "stealth-less" run. Basically, challenging all of the enemies and not doing anything that triggers the flashbacks of your uncle... There are some 'forced stealth' missions, but I think there are ways around them
I did that! Well, minus the forced stealth missions. But basically, I found the melee combat so enjoyable that I did not bother using stealth for the entire game. It stops being difficult at somepoint though, I doubt it'd be very fun to watch for this reason... unless you limited upgrades

- Metroid for the Nintendo Entertainment System has aged like time-travelling milk.

Just try it in super metroid, unless there is some flaw with the challenge that I can’t think of at the moment. It should work the same.

@@anomalocarislover7254 also without glitches that make the challenge boring, bosses, and more importantly pre boss enemies, are completely required. At minimum that's the pre kraid enemies, golden pirates, torizo and the golden 4, old tourian pirates, and more.

Metroid actually wasn't programmed. It just randomly showed up on Gunpei Yoko's desk one morning and he said "Fuck it, let's release Metroid!"

Someone should make a programming software called DuctTape and re-create Metroid using it.
The thing that amazes me is that programming on duct tape is _technically_ possible! A really long strip of duct tape acts as one of the parts of the theoretical Turing Machine which can do any computation, the other being the read-write head which travels up and down the tape and writes or erases marks according to some set of rules.

This has to be one of my favorite videos by miss gamechamp. It has jank, it has rants, it has cheese, it has hype, and it’s just SO WELL DONE. Brava!
I love how the duct tape gag went from held together by duct tape, to programmed using duct tape, to design to hate you because duct tape, to the duct tape consuming the devs as they tried to code the game.
I am forever grateful to all the gamers in the 80s who managed to delude themselves into making this game a success. Without them Nintendo might never have made the GBA Metroids, which rank as some of my favourite games of all time.

Metroid for the Nintendo Entertainment System commits many, many retro game sins including:
Being programmed with duct tape
Copy/pasted rooms that seem to loop
Unavoidable enemies
Very slow health and weapon grinding
Hiding mandatory paths where you would never expect
Required damage to reach certain items
Enemy spam
I always thought i sucked in the game because i was bad at it, the game not aging well makes some sense considering all the unfair deaths and another issues

I played Metroid II two years ago and it ended up somehow being my favorite 2D Metroid (I haven't played Zero Mission in years though and haven't played Fusion past the first few areas, so either one of those is likely to surpass it once I get around to 'em) but the constant copy-pasting of rooms literally led me to using a map and *still* ending up searching the ENTIRE planet from bottom-to-top-to-bottom trying to find one last Metroid, which turned out to be in a room that looked exactly like *another room I killed a Metroid in.* So yeah that was a slight tiny little annoyance. Never take for granted the fact that videogame rooms look different from each other now!

I also remember having a similar problem in Metroid 2, but it was much less annoying in comparasion to some unfair moments in the first game.

Just beat this game again as part of playing every 2D Metroid to build up to the release of Dread, and it was still a major pain. Anyone who’s able to do this challenge is a much stronger person than I’ll ever be.

Rules: If any damage is taken (unless compulsory to progress with the story) you must load up the previous checkpoint and start over.
Challenge: The Knightfall Protocol (100% ending) must be obtained and the game must be played on the hardest difficulty.

I actually did this same challenge on Metroid Fusion. It was a bit aggravating with how the X is needed to possess something to be able to access more.

"Missile pack" sounds way more satisfying than it has any right to sound.
So... fun fact. You can beat this with out killing anything. But it is not possible in our life time. If you leave the game running for 300 some years NES version at least. Mother Brain will be dead when you get to it. There is a password for that on the NES version of the game. I don't know if that is a thing on the Famicom version though; and with no password and the time it takes to do that being 300+ years (I forget the exact count) even an emulator running at 100X speed would not help. Still, that means you can in theory beat this game with out killing anything; just takes three or four generations to do it.
in case you're wondering: the first 3/4s of the system bricking 300 year password is: ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER

Any advice? Mine never really come out the way I want. They're just coated chicken when I make them.
@@BJGvideos depends if you're deep frying them or not but really season the batter. People tend to forget this bit. It's all about personal taste but my personal recipe is paprika, garlic powder, ground pepper, ground sea salt (you barely need any, trust me). And if I'm feeling sassy I put in ground chili flakes. Getting the measurements right is hard but look up some recipes and you'll be able to eyeball it in no time.

Did you know you can actually avoid killing Mother Brain if you wait long enough?
Thanks to SomecallmeJohnny Metroid review this year, if you wait like... over 300 years, it is possible to Mother Brain to die when you do absolute nothing... Or you know, use code to skip all that waiting.
That’s not how it works lol. Play time doesn’t affect anything except the ending. The password recorded Mother Brain as being dead and the playtime being 314 years, but these two things aren’t related in any way. It was just a joke for the video

i can't speak for the FDS version's save feature, but yes, the zebetites are saved in the password. there is a password generator that exists, and in it, you can disable or enable any/all of the zebetites.
The anxiety was killing me seeing all these donuts.
On one hand, I hope you do more Metroid Challenges (Metroid 2 Pacifist?), but on the other, this one in particular has left a very angry gal in it's wake
I actually genuinely like every Metroid game after this I've played so there is much less risk of burning hatred
