Actually, if you’re curious, look up Loie Fuller and the Serpentine dance! She’s this American dancer who came up with this silk dress with rods in the arms to do this wild performance - which pretty clearly directly inspired the animation choices in here!

This music video has lots of meanings in it.
Before I talk about my theory, we have to know that lyrics of ‘melancolia’ means regrets of fallen person. Also, Red and blue contrast were used in previous MV ‘wonderland’ and ‘moonshine’ as ideal and reality. Same metaphor is used on this one, too.
MV of melancolia can be explained by red, blue, purple scenes.
Red: Woman wearing ‘winged clothes’ is spinning and flying around. I think this ‘winged clothes’ is fame from the lyrics. Red scene is showing the ideal time of butterfly woman. But she meets the sun and her ‘winged clothes’ burn. It means her fame has gone and she is falling.
Blue: After woman falls, everything turns blue and Sun became the head of pin stuffing butterflies. She is facing reality after falling from fame. Then woman’s blood makes a puddle also a cocoon. Puddle and cocoon has the same meaning in this MV, place of reborn.
Purple: Now we can guess that purple means going to ideal after facing her reality. Woman’s hand goes up to sun and she reborn with a real ‘wing’. Compare to the red scene, she flied using her clothes before but now she goes up by herself, her ‘winged clothes’ burned in front of sun but her real ‘wing’ does not burn. She became ideal by herself.
Temporary things such as fame, can’t make us go higher, we have to face reality and make ourselves worthy inside. So, from my theory this could be the meaning of this MV. I can’t be sure about my theory, but still I think Caravan Palace and the animators made great effort on this one. Always loving Caravan Palace’s work!!!

Red and blue create purple. I think it represents that it's okay to be sad. Going through a tough experience doesn't mean you have to stay stuck in blue. It means you can resurface as a purple which has actual butterfly wings rather than just clothes that will get burned by the sun. This is how i interpret it.

I think this is about depression and recovery. The woman's red wing like garment is damaged and turns blue, and she descends into a world of suffering with the pinned butterflies, but after dissolving and reforming she grows a pair of real wings that are purple- incorporating both the happy red and the sad blue into something more real than the cloth wings she started with. That's how I feel after my depression recovery- that I am stronger and have grown "wings" that incorporate all the parts of me and are more resilient than the old ones.

I am obsessed with this, I've listened to it so many times now. The song and the animation are so on point. This celebration of dissolution and destruction and then rebirth is so deeply cathartic.

So my theory is that this song and the animation is about facing fame, and how it changes your perspective on your creation.
The beginning: aimless flight, the wings are covering the body made of doubt and insecurities.
Burnout Phase: Meeting fame, finding flawes in the art you created
Rebirth: Realising that the creation can not simply be the extension of your being. Your creation- is what you are and vice versa. The true art is born in sacrifice and honesty. Now the wings are as dark at the core as their bearer.

It could also be seen as a depiction of mental health. At first a manic phase, followed by a depressed episode and after that some form of self acceptance or seeking of help
Basically this video is what we all go through in life. Huh, no wonder why I start to tear up every time I watch this...
Some nice details I did not catch at first:
1:05 -The butterfly trying to find the exit
1:26 -Being in the centre of circle looks a lot like being in the centre of the sun, that may represent fame being expected
2:12 -Looking at the creation first (burned wings) then at own shortcomings (hands)
2:22 -Seeing another butterfly approaching the sun= Looking at another person repeating the cycle
2:23 -Hands in the position to hold the fame as a material object, only to be sucked into it
2:34 -Yup, that happened to a lot of different people
2:49 -The person is deep blue on the inside
3:10 -Only the prototype of the wings grew out of the puddle= art brought the person out of depression
3:54 -The silhouette gained a bright outline, something only wings had in the beginning
It's someone turning into an animal person so really it's just another furry video

More detail can go into 4 minutes easier than it can a whole show. This is a beautiful animation
Then again. A show has to streamline animation, so it takes longer depending on the amount of detail. So yeah CP has really good animation, but there's a reason it's clearly better than a typical animated show.
It depends in a lot of things, sometimes animated shows don’t get enough budget and they have to do more than a 4 minute animation with short deadlines so yeah
I really love the story the animations tells. How you initially start working towards something and it feels amazing even though the loneliness still hurts, so you enjoy the bittersweetness. But then you stop feeling that way, and now your lonely without anything to distract you, and the person you were disappears. You become something new, something sadder, but still something stronger. Alina Popescu is incredibly talented.

I’ll be truthful, This song brings me to tears every time I listen to it, at first I didn’t ever really pay attention to lyrics, and I didn’t really understand why I was crying either (just one of those random moments), I usually just sit around and listen to music to find inspiration, this song is just beautiful, I felt so many different emotions, I read the lyrics the other day, and it occurs to me more how much more lyrically it makes sense, I wouldn’t say that how I feel is anyway negative, it’s just it plucks my heart strings I guess, so Thank you for making this song, and sorry for the long drawn out comment but it’s true, I think the title fits it just perfectly, especially living in a constant state of Melancholy~

The initial dance reminded me of a flower falling from a height, then she was a beautiful butterfly dancing in the sky. I just like to think that maybe the fallen and dying butterfly is remembering her life in her last moments, when she could fly up high, that's why the title "melancholia", symbolising the powerlessness that befalls into everybody. Then she died and spiraled into a new life, death and rebirth, she was able to reach the sky once again. Or more likely, what in the end reached the sun/moon was only her spiritual form.
Edit: she fell because she got too close to the sun and got burned. This reminds me of the myth of Icarus.
I like when people offer their own interpretation to artistic expressions. It's sort of a reflection of who you are

What a nice song and visual combination. I really like the Icarus theme of failure, depression and metamorphosis, how the color change from dreaming pink, to depression blue and finally alluring purple, the combination of both colors above.

This is the one thing that I adore about animation... whatever you imagine, you can make it into reality, you can make your thoughts and stories come to life.
God I know someone already said this, but geez this really inspires me to work as hard as possible on going into animation. The color schemes, the background design, and of course how buttery smooth the animation is… it’s so inspiring.

Sure we all see the woman, the butterfly, the flower...but i honestly think all these are just amazing metaphors. Objects of beauty, yes, but before that they rarely are so. Hairy little caterpillars or grungy little saplings...and when the whole video changes tone i feel like its just adding to the metaphor of nothing staying the same. It starts out weak, small, whatever, but then becomes a symbol of absolute beauty, only to eventually fall back into another cocoon. Or a puddle. Or whatever else. This song says to me that change is ever-constant, but that doesn't mean it's always bad or good. It more so is just a sign of progression, not just physically but mentally, and how every form of progress pushes you to your next butter fly, even if there's a chrysalis in the middle.
