It's not just about that. this animation is about the fact that life is essentially meaningless and the only meaning it can have is the meaning we as individuals choose to assign it. therefore assuming the greater society's meaning for life for ourselves will only lead to disappointment, unfulfillment, and depression. society wants you to be an astronaut (or doctor, soldier, engineer, etc.) because it's what's "coolest" or "best" but unless you actually be what you want to be and fulfill the meaning that you assign to life, you'll never be happy.
I feel bad for people who are really ambitious for money, career, relevance. no amount of money will give me the feeling of freedom I get when I lie on my back and drink beers on a beach at sunset. ambition will kill you. realize that life is meaningless and that's what makes it beautiful and worth living.

I rarely comment cause I think its pointless to essentially shout into the void of the internet. I think its a waste of time and energy. But for this video I'll make an exception solely because maybe someone who has been in my shoes or will soon be in them can resonate with the way I felt about this video and the music.
I have ADHD and struggle with focusing a lot. I always sought to support my argument that over focusing and dedicating your life to something was a waste of time. This video reinforced that way of thinking which, in my case, impacted me negatively.
I used to watch this in high school and always thought the message of the video was to not take life so seriously and don't waste your time chasing one thing because everything could end in an instant.
Now as I'm a bit older I see it differently. Now its, 'Do whatever makes you happy'. Whether it requires focus is not important. All that matters is that you chase after something that gives you drive, purpose, or joy.
As I'm preparing to separate from the military and start a new chapter in my life, I'm going to continue chasing what I truly love to do.
And I hope whoever decided to stop and read my comment has a wonderful day.

For years, this music video has always been in the back of my mind ever since it came out and always inspired me on what animation can do. The music is incredible too and together i think its probably my favourite music video...its near perfect story telling.
This song genuinely holds up so well, I'd say too well.

The thing I never thought about in this video is, well, even if the guy had lived a fulfilling life, would it have mattered? Imagine he hooked up with that girl and made her his wife and had kids with her... They would have died in the explosion anyways. Maybe he would have died with them, thus never knowing the pain of being alone, but, in the end, he lived to be one of the last humans alive. He will probably being the last real remnant that shows humanity ever existed. That is perhaps a greater glory.
That being said, you should definitely have kids. Don't bank on the planet exploding while you are off world. Just a thought.
