The original source of inspiration and meaning behind the song and video is irrelevant: we can only interpret it from our own point of view. In my opinion, it's about facing your demons and whatever is chasing you. Nobody walks through this life without suffering the slings and arrows that test our resolve as human beings.

Nice!
I loved this when it first got released
My favourite part is where the girl's initial reaction to the wolf is to just fucking smack it round the face with her skateboard
Mr. Avacado Man the best part about this whole video is just how much they show about each character in this with such little time. They make them seem more realistic in a weird sense. Granted that girl would totally have a sore bum or none.
Mr. Avacado Man ikr
TrueBlueYoshi
The animator did a really good job with that. You could just see the "Oh shit" in her eye after swinging her board.
I'm not sure what the video has to do with the song, but it's awesome either way. Reminds me of something out of Call of Cthulhu, with the Hounds of Tindalos.
I think the wolf was supposed to be symbolic of certain vices or addictions and the difficulty of escaping them, hence it attacking when the guy got a drink, implying that he might be an alcoholic, or the girl being addicted to smoking.
"I can feel how your flesh is crying out for more."
Not sure about the first guy though... No helmet?
Edit: Wait, I think I've got it, 2:58 Anger issues!
Having the wolves represent the characters’ problems, and them trying to run away from them is pure genius

I think their running from addiction
One of the characters at the end eventually runs towards the problems and finally decide to deal with it is also a nice detail
Ik everyone under the sun has talked about the symbolism of addiction with each character but I really enjoy how each character reacts to the wolf and the details you can derive from their reactions.
how the glasses guy who a lot of people think he's an alcoholic but I don't think people ever really say that the coin he has is likely a sobriety chip, the way he examines it and hands it away after getting that drink makes it feel very much like it is him falling back into the addiction rather than it being a constant, and his reaction to the wolf reflects that as he runs out of fear of his addiction returning.
the girl initially reacts with some fight, but after seeing it has no effect resorts to running, which could give the idea that she's tried to quit before and failed, ultimately choosing to run from the problem rather than stand ground and face it.
even though we don't really see the reaction of the biker (probably because with his addiction theorized to be thrill seeking and speeding it's likely the wolf just showed up while he was riding and he saw it) what you can see is how determined to outrun the problem and when finally has to confront the wolves he is visibly teared up over it but ultimately chooses to stand his ground.
just love the personality of each character shining through and giving a insight as to not only their addictions but their willingness to overcome them
Thank you for mentioning sobriety chips. That scene reminds me of something from when I was little.
I used to live in a city that had a sleezy bar where people who were backsliding from recovery could come in and give the bartender a sobriety chip for a free drink. The fucking rat bastard owner would even nail some of them to the wall like a trophy.
Thankfully the bar owner was caught breaking several serious laws including trafficking Cocaine and was forcibly shut down and arrested.
You also never actually see him drink, so I think you're spot-on with the recovering alcoholic idea
@@egalomon never even noticed that detail good eye
What if the bike guy didn't even have an addiction? He could just be someone who's trying to help others with their addiction.
Everyone is gonna see their own journey
Just realized the line "not too young not too old." Is a reference to the fact addiction can literally hit you whenever, also I'm in a state where my flesh is crying out for more, thanks for helping me through
If your pet flesh monster is crying out you probably aren't feeding it enough, perhaps a treat?
@@JacobSca DON'T MENTION FOOD, IT EXCITES IT
The only way to truly be free is through Jesus Christ, I strongly urge you to repent and seek Jesus. Think about it, the infinite and almighty God who cannot even be contained by the heavens chose to confine himself to a human form to die for your sin. The Bible says that all of us have sinned and that we are all deserving of death because the wages of sin are death. Jesus Christ took our sins upon himself and died for them. But behold, Jesus Christ rose from the grave 3 days later and he has victory over death and sin. Jesus Christ can set you free if you accept him as Lord and Savior. He who the son sets free is free indeed!
This is what a good animator can do with just black and white.

Has anyone else noticed in the beginning, only a single wolf was chasing the guy on the motorcycle, but when we see him again later, a lot more are chasing him. And then, at the end, there's a whole horde behind them. Almost like it's saying that running from your problems instead of facing them only creates new problems and makes things worse in the long run.

I wanna add that when ever the wolves are in darkness they transform and become more monsterlike i think this represents that if you just leave your problems alone in the dark they won't get better only worse also the guy at the beginning since he keeps only running away they multiply also showing you can't run also notice how the wolf that attacks him in the front is the original wolf and he had to deal with it

I love how by just hearing the “dun dun dun DUN DUN dun” from the start you instantly know what song it is
Honestly, the attention to detail in this video amazes me. I've rewatched this video more times than I can count, and here's a few things I personally noticed after my rewatches:
- The zoom-in to the wolf's eye at 2:10 represents an insider look into the struggles the 3 main characters face and how each of their respective addiction takes hold of them. A notable example is how the man with the glasses curls up into a ball as he clutches his head. Because of his polygon-like character model, he ends up resembling the cubes of alcohol that swirl around him, showing how he has become one with his addiction (and how the alcohol/mental turmoil is messing with his brain).
- Another cool example of the "addiction" motif is the girl with the cigarette. There is special emphasis on the cig being lit, hinting at the fact it's her personal coping mechanism for whatever issue she's dealing with. We see that it's also taken hold of her, though. At 1:32, we see the wolf coming from out of the shadows. But at 1:34, when the girl looks up, all we see is the cigarette smoke right where the wolf was positioned, which is metaphorical for how the wolf is her smoking addiction incarnate and that they are both one-in-the-same.
- The use of black and white goes a long way for the thematic of "the only way to solve your problems is to confront them directly". Throughout the video up until the very end, every shadow is perfectly animated to either exist alongside a character, be next to them, or be behind them as if it's following them. There are so many examples of this throughout the video, but my personal favorite is how the motorcycle man's relationship with the shadows progresses over time. When he goes through tunnels with shadows casting over him multiple times, it's metaphorical for how he's been through multiple lapses of struggle (I'm guessing mental health) and has spent his life running away from his problems alone. However, by the end of the video when he finally has friends around him who can empathize with his struggles, we see a fire (representative of his newfound confidence within himself) burning behind him, casting his own shadow in FRONT of him for the first and only time. He then actively charges in THE DIRECTION OF his shadow, finally showcasing how he's built up the courage and intent to face his problems head-on. I thought this particularly was a REALLY cool detail.
Kudos to RUDO Co. and SIAMES for making this artistic masterpiece. It's so much fun to analyze and you notice a new detail with almost every rewatch.
EDIT: After posting this I noticed another neat thing, which is that when the girl smashes the skateboard across the wolf's face, the wolf is startled for a bit and doesn't immediately chase after the girl. This is possibly analogous to how your hobbies can distract you from your addictions and mental turmoil, but it's not enough to keep them at bay forever.
Wow.. I never even thought about that hobby thing, very good catch.
There's a really interesting little touch when the girl hits the wolf with the skateboard. When it connects, the wolf's body distorts from the strike and then snaps back and chases her. That little distortion could symbolize a small, temporary attempt to fight against her addiction or how she realizes how destructive her habits are before falling back into addiction.
I dunno, maybe I'm overanalyzing a really nicely animated music vider😅
Another point that sticks out to me from this one... only in the very end does the shadow actually fall on the character. Before that, the characters move through shadowed spaces and remain fully lit. In the end, the shadow actually falls over the face of the first character. Might be a blunt metaphor, but I can appreciate a literal 'facing your darkness' when I see one.
I think maybe his face was also meant to be the most defined and emotive in his breaking point not only for dramatic effect but because we see who he is best when he faces the crisis.
Ive noticed that when the girl hit her wolf, it looked like smoke which is yeah pretty cool
A friend of mine noted that: For the "driver" to save the "drinker" from his daemon, he had to sacrifice the thing that kept him running from his own.

@@SIAMESmusic Una caricia al alma la respuesta, muchas gracias
While many people (including me) are hyped about the music, i am also absolutely fascinated by the character designs, and the animation is outstanding. This is a masterpiece of a music video.
My theory is that the third character is dealing with his own problems (he is on the highway, the bike could represent that he is doing well on his own problems because wolves can't caught him) but then he find people that need help too so he stops and help that person(first the girl and the crash the bike to the wolf that is with the other guy) but when everything seems lost or bad, he gets himself stronger so he can deal with it even if it seems impossible.
I actually hadn't thought of the first part being that.
So basically the guy on the motorcycle is doing well represented by him not being caught by the wolves.
Then we have the second guy which, by the looks of it, only has one coin (doesn't have a lot of money) and is addicted to drinking since when he looks into the cup, his addiction jumps out of it and chases after him. While running away he seems to escape only to be greeted again by his problem, reminding him that he can't run away from it.
Now the girl: she seems to be ok until she starts smoking a cigarette which makes the wolf appear from the shadows as she feeds her addiction. She notices that and tries to run away from her problem and while doing this comes across the first guy which is able to deal with his own problems (although, by the looks of it, keep stacking up due to the increased number of wolves after him). He saves her from her problems and both are fine until they come across the other guy.
He loses himself and both him and the girl are caught up by their problems.
Not being able to run away anymore, as pointed out by you, he takes the matters into his hands by bettering himself and finally confronts his own problems.
Concuerdo contigo uwu
I think that maybe the bike guy issue is that hes good a running from his problems (why he could outrun the wolves on his bike) but when he saw people who needed help he finally took those problems head on(why he fights at the end)........
i can barely figure out what i should have for lunch
He's running from his problems and then says, "fuck it" and faces them head on
Words cannot express how cool this animation is.

@@uncle5164 i think that just means that the person's addiction is calling out, like "hey you need another cig" which is why they say "I don't trust myself once I hear your call" Because the person loses control

I’ve been looking for this song for 4 years, it’s even better then I remember, and it’s animated so well, definitely one of my favorites
This was suddenly stuck in my head once I woke up. I don’t know how. It was just so motivating for me and I don’t know why.
Many people have probably already said this, but I think that the wolves aren't even real. They are simply the people's problems fromes into a physical manifestation. Everybody tries to run away from their problems, one at a time, but as the wolves become an army, it symbolizes that the problems are multiplying, that running away from them isn't gonna solve them, but just make them worse.
The finale also symbolizes them confronting their problems, the man getting up, screaming as he runs towards the wolves. The lyrics sound like they come from the enemy's perspective. "cuz you can run but you can't hide, I'm gonna make you mine!" is basically saying that the problems are slowly taking a toll on them with each passing second. The lyrics "I'm out of my head, of my heart, of my mind!" emphasizes that even more. Even the fact that nobody else notices that shows that it is happening only in their minds.
I like the official siames channel keeps pinning these different comments.

I think that the fact that the video does not show us if they defeated the wolves is what really gives the message. This video is not a promise of "face your problems, and you will defeat them" but instead an advice that we all should try to face our problems even though we don't actually know if we will succeed by doing so. But, as everyone in the comments has said, we should help one another with our problems in order to truly be able to face them. Note that the girl at the start tried to hit her wolf, but failed and just ran away. They only were able to fight them when they were together, showing that being with other people makes your problems easier to handle.

His tactical retreat, using an adaptive coping mechanism (motorcycle) gave him time to find friends and face the wolves together. He was even able to use his mechanism to eliminate somebody else's wolf, leaving that person free to help him in return.
Motorcycle guy was clearly never a coward, as he risked his life to save the girl and glasses guy without hesitation. Rather, he had a strategy that worked for a time, which he had to give up on once he realized that there were other people in his life that also needed help. This gave him the courage and strength needed to face his wolves head-on.
There's a middle ground between always running and always fighting. There's no shame in running for a time, as long as you retain a value system and set of personal beliefs that will compel you to eventually take up arms and fight again.
I really loved this comment, it gives a new perspective to the video thanks man
lol
Sometimes you can't fight though. Sometimes they have a gun and you don't.
Couple of days ago people broke into my home and held me at gunpoint. I was ready to fight to the death but I asked them what the f they wanted and they where just looking for loot. They f'ed off after I handed over my cash.
Now I'm running. What am I supposed to do. Can't go back there again. They threatened to kill me if the cops got involved but I was already on the phone with them as they made that threat. Can't fight them. Sometimes running is the only option you have.

Time to learn to read again then
6 years later and I'm still obsessed with the animation and the meaning behind the lyrics and animation
Out of every music video I’ve seen, this is one of the best ones. The animation is amazing, the (possible) metaphor is awesome, and the music hits hard!
I showed this to my high school students today. They loved both the song and the gorgeous animation!
Thanks so much for sharing! 🎶💕✌️

You are a nice teacher then😄

the animation is like a little case study on the impact of dynamic camera angles, perspective shots, and fast transitioning on emotional storytelling and it's very cool to see it done this well. also the amount of abstract shape transitions is super brain tingly.
ah yes this is big brain time
it sure it!! Also the late inclusion of red into the b&w is a breathtaking shift.
literally. this is huge inspiration for anyone who wants to animate or draw interesting perspectives
I kinda saw it as "how can we chuck in a lot of our favourite bits from famous anime on an absolute shoestring by going minimalist but keeping the parts which make them recognisable and magnificent". And they pulled it off brilliantly.
How long does it take to anime this sort of music video?
I remember listening to this song almost every day 6 years ago....
It still hits the same. Amazing
This song makes me want to cry. I just found it again after so long. I have memories of this song from when i was very little. I cant remember what the video was but its this song that was used. I hope i find more of the songs i used to listen to. Thanks for being one of the puzzle pieces

I have to admit, I shared it with a lot of people.

See, i half-disagree with the people saying that the girl breaking her skateboard over the wolf is a symbol of her fighting back. I see it more as a symbol of addiction taking everything, even what one loves to do. In her desperate swing, fueled by the fear that the wolf was there, she destroyed a healthy way to destress in outdoor activity and also a passion of hers. Skating seems very important to her, and the destruction of the skateboard could mean loss as much as it means fighting.
👌👌👌
I guess you nailed that theory If SIAMES agrees.
@@jbyker5851 or it could be like the English teacher meme pulling more out of it than the original author thought of but also liked as they saw other ways their work could be interpreted
noice
That's actually a really good interpretation. She was willing to give up her beloved skateboard if it meant she didnt have to face her addiction
This song is just perfect, and the meaning behind it is just as wonderful. The guy in the beginning was already trying to run from his problems while the others were having the shock of reality that their way to scape stared to chase them, so they also ran away. The greater the charge, the greater the explosion.
Also, when the wolf turns into a type of "spider" rememberd me of Kaonashi from Spirited Away. He transforms himself based on what he ate, the Wolf also looked like a spider and it seems that he ate a lot, meaning that addiction is like being in a spider web and that it makes you full but also insatiable.
This song being 7 years old makes ME feel old, I remember listening to this on repeat during highschool to get homework done late at night
The Head is the Glasses dude, The Heart is the girl and The Mind is the bike guy
The glasses dude escapes from stress, maybe family one (the red scene the guy grabs his head, with stress you get headaches) The Girl has a broken heart, The red scene shows her trying to grab someone, even screaming. and the Bike guy is depression, falling into the sad abyss, everything is be sad, every moment every decision, maybe that's why there is many wolves.

glad your sober dawg. drugs are one duel bladed bitch.
U r back...enjoy your beautiful mind.
Can we talk about how siamés is still hearting comments of theories, messages, and how many people expressed there thoughts about it desptite this vid being 3 years . like dang respect.
Honestly though this is amazing though, the message , the animation , and the music. Also remember kids, never run from your problems, they'll just grow in numbers and catch up to you, just run at them head on
that's how you can tell they care about their fan base
moral of the story. if a a pack of wolves start chasing me face em head on? alrigh. got it. :3
Just yet a rock at them, if you yet enough, they’ll stop.
My work looks nothing like this, but this clip is one of the main things that inspired me to do animation!! Now many years later I just graduated animation school and have the skills to make any project i want ~ thanks for the inspiration and the cool song i listened to while doing countless assignments over the years
So, I just noticed that in the video, you can clearly see there are 3 people. Which represents the head, heart, and mind. And at the end of the video, you can see there are 3 main wolves, which also may represent the head, heart, and mind. I really never thought about this from the beginning. Since all I payed attention to was the song. Now, I am just realizing these types of stuff in the video. This is just a theory.
Saw this back when I was a teenager, this masterpiece really sparked my passion for animation and music. Still freaking amazing like my first watch.
I've been listening to this for the past 4-5 years and l still love it. Also I'm a beginner animator so I can relate so much
Omg same I saw this back in middle school, now I’m revisiting this now while I’m in college studying animation. It’s truly inspiring
@@z0mbiegyaru I’m about to go to College for Animation and I just saw this video and it solidified that I made the right choice!
From what I gather, it seems like this song is about facing your vices, or problems. We instinctively drown our sorrows in a variety of ways, be it drinking, smoking, driving, gaming, ect. Every time we choose to face away from the problem, the wolf gets stronger, and ultimately harder to escape which is one of the hardest truths of addiction.
Nice you got pinned in a 3 year old video congrats
No way dude!
AGAIN I think the same
Nice and truth
Nice(/'0')/
Today I realized something. Something I've probably always subconsciously known throughout the several years I've continued coming back to this video and never tiring of it. Something inevitable, and definite but also something I somehow never grasped as a fully formed thought.
Anyways, here it is. My aforementioned epiphany;
This is my favorite song of all time, and my favorite music video of all time. It's the all-in-one package of mastery. I've never seen something like this that has literally infinite replayability. I never tire of it. It's always amazing. Every single time I come back here.
10/10
I love how this amazing music video can have a different meaning to it depending on what you go through or who you are! For me it seems like all the people are trying to escape their problems only causing the problems to get worse. But for other people they see the glasses guy as the head, the girl as the heart, and the motorbike guy as depression! All in all this is beautiful and brilliant music video, well done SIAMES.
This reminds me of the Native American story about how everyone has two wolves inside, eternally fighting. One is all things good - hope, love, faith, generosity, kindness, empathy, and patience. The other is of evil - hate, jealousy, rage, sorrow, selfishness, and guilt. The wolf that wins is the one you feed.
When you allow addiction to control your life in an attempt to drown out guilt or loneliness, when you give into anger or jealousy...you feed that evil wolf inside and let it take control. It is essential to have balance and not let the darker side completely consume you. It will always be there, but the good wolf must be fed to hold back the evil wolf.
Wasn’t it two bears?
If there's a version with bears, I've never heard it and it's probably from a different tribe than mine.
@@ladycoyote992 Okay. I think it’s more about the message of duality than the animal itself.
I love this story so much I got "which wolf wins?" tattooed on my arm to remind me to feed the right wolf :)
I remember that story from Tomorrowland. I didn’t realize it was a Native American story. Good to know.

Listening to this song now makes me remember a few years back when I was struggling with depression, the way I see the song is that, as long as you run from your issues, they will only get worse until you confront them, I confronted my issues, and ever since then I’ve just been living life by the moment and I’m loving it
Reasons why i still listen to this song:
- its good
- its catchy
- it symbolizes something
- its creative
- the lyrics are from both perspectives
Edit: After 2 years I still love this song ❤️

-Animation's fire
-Gotta make an automatic stand based off of it

Shame on me for sitting on this animated MV for too long! It's amazing! I was immersed in the animation and music! Then I saw there's an entire channel of these gems, so of course I subscribed!
Just discovered this. I've heard this song before but it was always background music. Now that I've actually paid attention to it it's absolutely amazing .
The destruction of the bike when taking care of the other persons problem could be symbolic of how he's giving up his easy life while attempting to help this guy. Helping others isn't easy and when he does help the other man from his wolf, his problems, it makes him vulnerable as well. This could also be shown by how he had the other girl jump on, he's taking on her burdens to try and help her *escape* (big difference) alongside him. By committing this sacrifice he no longer escapes his problems while helping others, by helping others he now has to learn how to fight his own problems.
That's deep. You're really smart to have figured that out
Maybe... Steven Universe in a nutshell?
anyer hinojosa wait a second..... that’s literally the exact plot I had to do a double take for a second
if thats the case than the meaning of running will only make the prolems multiply is true as well here. love deep thinking.
but than I need to ask why no one accepts the problems and WORK with them.Sure its hard if they come around but hitting back on them like 1:40 only will make them snowball you even harder. work with or on your problems , akt like an adult should akt and all will be clear in time.
HMM THIS MUSIC SO COOL!!!
FNAF
The more you run, the more your problems multiply. The more you care about, the more you have to fight for, and the harder you fight back. It's fascinating that the catalyst for the growth of the first character we're introduced to is other people. Worth thinking about if you've got a few wolves on your trail.
Damn
Kal Kun Yeah. It's not that easy to get rid of them. But once you do, you're free as a bird.

I only discovered this song recently and it is now my favorite song of all time, i like to think of it being about the struggles of addiction, the glasses dude is an alcoholic, the girl is smoker, and the bike dude has an addiction to living on the edge, as we can see him driving without a helmet, each time a wolf appears is when they give in to their compulsions, but even without the philosophical aspect this song is amazing and the animation is incredible
Been listening to you guys for don't know how many years, and still coming back to ur every single animation just bring so much emotion in my heart ❤️❤️
