This song gives me such a feeling of nostalgia, I’m not even joking it’s the theme song of an era in my life. Whenever I hear this it perfectly fits it.

In a few weeks I will get time
To realize it's right before my eyes
And I can take it if it's what I want to do
And I am leaving and this is starting to feel like
It's right before my eyes
And I can taste it
It's my sweet beginning
And I can tell just what you want
You don't want to be alone
You don't want to be alone
And I can't say it's what you know
But you've known it the whole time
Yeah, you've known it the whole time
Maybe next year I'll have no time
To think about the questions to address
Am I the one to try to stop the fire?
I wouldn't test you
I'm not the best you could have attained
Why try anything?
I will get there
Just remember I know
And I can tell just what you want
You don't want to be alone
You don't want to be alone
And I can't say it's what you know
But you've known it the whole time

My younger and tougher sister and God Mother to my first and only baby, who shares a birthday one day apart from hers, passed away 9 months ago today. This was one of her fav songs, and Everytime I have been confronted by a trial or challenge following I found this song reminded me of her, HER BRAVE! I WANNA SEE ME BE BRAVE TOO!
Honestly, she was beyond that! Strong and beautiful and brilliant too! I miss her everyday and this approachong new year untouched by her life and love is some times, some days and almost every other passing too much I believe to handle or hurdle through, but thank remember she wants to see me be brave, and I have to for our little man, if she can I can. And I will and stand as the only one who actually can. I'm my father's last daughter out of 3 and him and my son need me to be.
Look after us sis, your so dearly missed and I'm not anywhere close to your consistent independence but I certainly will try because you always have more confidence in me than I saw for myself, hopefully k can embody that vision and begin to see myself the way you always had. Thank you for the time you gave me and I'm always grateful however brief, for the strength and resilient your ever outstretched hand in my regard. I look up to you in life and now in spirit too. Amen

Can someone explain to me what makes this song give that “feeling?” Like that melancholy, makes you want to dance but gives you sad feelings. The lyrics of the chorus give that feeling. But I’m curious about the music theory of the song. What key is the song in? Is he singing certain notes that give the feeling?
I'd love to know too dude
The 2010s-2013s. Really good alt rock possibly? Idk this brings back memories of driving back to my house while we listened to alt rock.
major 7th chords gives that melancholic sound. See also 1979 by Smashing Pumpkins, Here's Where the Story Ends by the Sundays. Keen on Boys by Radio Dept. All have similar chord progressions incorporating at least one major7 chord
Adding on to this, the key is F# minor which means that the seventh chord on the tonic would be minor as well. However, they omit the 3rd of the chord in the main chord progression resulting in the chord not actually being minor. They add it back in during the verse causing it to have a more somber feeling
