    My manager bought the loss leader Cobalt version of this - had a 5 speed manual and zero options - even had crank windows. But he had a long commute, it got great gas mileage, and it never let him down. These are essentially purpose built as thrifty cars for commuting or first time new car buyers. Nothing wrong with that.

      His car must have been one of the Cobalt XFEs (eXcellent Fuel Economy) - zero options, five speed manual. They could achieve 40 MPG (or more).

    I had a Cobalt rental car when my then-wife and I flew to Wisconsin to find an apartment after I got a job up there. The whole trip was a cluster, with a snowstorm in Minneapolis keeping us from getting to Madison, and we ended up flying into La Crosse and driving down. Of all the cars I've driven, it was certainly one of them. The seats were weirdly uncomfortable. The guy at the airport charged me for an extra day when I returned it five minutes late and did so with a smirk on his face. Some cars I'm nostalgic for... that's not one of them.

    2000s pre-bailout GM was pretty all right. The cars were reasonably stylish, they were fairly reliable, the seats and ride were comfortable, and the plastics were decent enough with the exception of the painted buttons. These were perfectly adequate transportation. It's a shame Pontiac and Oldsmobile and Saturn and Saab are no longer around but GM just had too many brands making the same cars.

    I had a 2006 Cobalt SS with the same 2.4 L engine, that I just retired due to rust issues. 270K miles with no major issues; it always started and ran great no matter how bitter cold it was here sometimes. I always liked the G5 as a better-looking car (in front) than the Cobalt although I do like the Cobalt's taillights better. Such a handy size of a vehicle compared the SUVs and crossovers which consumers have flocked to since then.

    This was great! Love a good blast from the past, especially with Pontiac vehicles! I had two G6’s: 2005 and 2008. I loved the 4 panel panoramic sunroof of the ‘05 G6 but I absolutely loved the ‘08 G6, which felt so much more put together and less rigid when driving it. I was baffled by the introduction of both the G5 and G3 and hated knowing they existed. My parents owned GM products for most of my childhood and my mom still drives a Buick Enclave to this day. I’ve since moved on from GM but still smile anytime I see someone driving a Pontiac-except for the G3 and G5.

    I had an 06 Gt 5spd manual. It was a lot of fun had heated leather seats sunroof and a 7 speaker pioneer sound system with a 10” kicker in the trunk , factory. It was quick but it could be twitchy in hair pins if you came in fast . The turn in was always off ,you’d always have to correct.it had zero body roll which was great but to softly dampened , made for a pogo stick shock if you didn’t expect it but corrected it self quickly if you didn’t panic. Interior plastics were shabby but that was gum in those days. Was a fun car and it looked bad ass all shined up in black.🍻

  • @ReverendJasper
    @ReverendJasper Před 3 měsíci

    Had one as a rental, and had a few Cobalt coupes too. They were comfortable, but parking lots were hard with the big doors. The trunk was decently sized, but the Pontiac had the Monsoon subwoofer that took some of that away. But the trunk opening was a glorified mail slot. The Cobalt sedan was much more practical, yet the rentals were seemingly always base models without cruise.

    07 pontiac g5 with 2.2 ecotec, made 440k km with it, most reliable and economical car ive ever owned, had clutch issues and that is it, the 2.4 was less reliable because of vvt, oil consumption is caused by wrong oil, i swapped the entire suspension and steering from a turbo cobalt and the seats, handling was much better and ride much comfy, its a must

    My G5 GT 5 speed has been the most reliable car I've owned. Pretty peppy around town, fun to push hard, but still gets 30 mpg. Only problems I have with it are the rust and the fact that premium fuel is REQUIRED for a relatively low powered car to prevent spark knock. Even says that in the manual. But i still love it to death and will dearly miss it when its gone.

    9:25 - What happened in 1987 (LeMans) is arguably what killed Pontiac. Or the 1000 before that. Or the minivans. Or the ponderous Safari. Or the fat Parisienne... Pontiac forgot its "excitement" identity, and THAT is why the brand died.

    I owned the chevrolet version of this car. What the car lacked in looks and refinement it made up for in gas mileage and reliability. Lasted 220000 miles before I made the mistake of loaning it to my older brother, who ran it for a month without changing the oil, trashing the engine block. Definitely don't miss having to lift my son's infant car seat in & out of the backseat, but I do miss not having a car payment.

      It's amazing how people, especially non-Americans and those who don't live in the countries where the cars were sold, are conditioned to perceive certain models of cars exclusively as video game vehicles. They are and have always been real cars. It kind of irks me that I talk about a specific car and one person goes "Oh my gosh, it's a Need for Speed car!" We get it, this car was in video games, but to call it a video game car is honestly a little ignorant, since the car was never designed for that game. It was designed like every other car waiting to be driven by a real person.
      Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with learning about cars from video games, but to go on with this video game vehicle label is a little annoying. Not everyone can relate with video games, and the reason why the cars appear in those games are a matter of advertisement, so it's kind of insulting that people perceive advertised products as nothing more than video game items.
