The desperate journey of Ethiopian migrants to Saudi Arabia | Reporters • FRANCE 24 English

  • Every day, thousands of Ethiopians set off on foot on a desperate 2,000-kilometre trek in the hope of reaching Saudi Arabia. Their route takes them across the Djibouti desert, the Red Sea and Yemen, a country ravaged by civil war. Every year, hundreds die of exhaustion in the desert or drown while crossing the Gulf of Aden. Those who make it to Yemen, often having starved for days on end, are easy prey for the local mafia who kidnap them for ransom. Our reporters followed these migrants on their journey and documented, with exclusive footage, the extent of human trafficking.

@Papa Dee: Are you claiming that the world's human population isn't increasing? Why should those who have had only 2 children do anything to support families of 6 or more? If the rest of the world had been doing what I have done, and kept their reproduction down to two children per woman or fewer, then there would be NO world refugee crisis. You can't displace people who have never been conceived.
I denied myself the third child that I wanted. The most inhumane, selfish, people in the world are those who persist in starting more babies when they are unable to provide an acceptable future to the children that they already have.

Wow - sitting here under quarantine in Los Angeles and our lives here are totally disrupted, i watch this in disbelief and think that we have nothing to worry about in comparison to them. I've been to Mexico and seen many people living in poverty but this is unreal. And worse yet, to watch others take advantage of them in their distress - i dont understand how you could do that to another person. Thank you for sharing their story with us although, after seeing this - how does it change me? The rest of us that see this? God help them in their suffering. And help us remember them in our prayers. Help us not to complain about anything and when we do - remember their faces.

@@saltrocklamp199 As @semamlak said, even though the immigrants where from different parts of the country, it was made to look like people from a single ethnic group are fleeing from the country. Moreover, @21:11, the interviwee was mentioned as Oromo Smuggler in Yemen. Really? What does that even mean? He's checking the immigrant's ethnicity before smuggling? He also mentioned that the Oromos are targeted when it comes to blackmailing. Was it important to mention ethnicity here?. One more thing that I noticed here is, after saying the Oromos are those who are blackmailed, not even one from victims who were presented is not from Oromo. Then, the so called Oromo Smuggler "explained" this senario saying the Tigrians are ones who want to persecute Oromo's because of hatred. Anyways, it wasn't even necessary to mention the ethnicity of the immigrants in the first place. They are all Ethiopians who are suffering and they are suffering not because of there ethnicity but because of the fact that they are fleeing from there country which couldn't provide their basic needs. I don't expect this kind of thing from big name medias. I also wonder why you guys always "love" talking about the negative things when it comes to Africa. I didn't say the media shouldn't bring this kind of issue to attention but please at least try not to be part of the problem!
