  • In the ancient world, the Iberians had the falcata and the Greeks had the very similar kopis. The hilts were decorated often with horse or bird-themed shapes.

so Kopis is a word with some really fantastic history going back long before Alexander. In Koine Greek (Alexandrian period) it roughly translates to cutter, however it is thought to have had Egyptian linguistic links to the word Khopesh which dates back to 2000 BC where the Hieroglyphs Khop (meaning 'knife') and ḫpš (meaning 'leg') were used to describe the sickle shaped swords that were buried in the tomb of Tutankhamun and discovered in 1922, and depictions of Khopesh on amphorae were created in Mesopotamia as far back as 2500 BC.

I'm a spanish knifemaker and i'm very proud of our falcata 😂: The difference between the kopesh & the iberian falcata (pronounced FalKata) is mainly the width of the blade, the iberian falcata was well known by the romans as one of the most feared swords they had to fight, Biriato de Caura was a celtic iberian warchief that stood against the roman empire for many many years, his army was equiped with the falcata as main weapon. Also the falcata shown in this video is not one of the most accurate designs, they really were like a giant kukri, with a narrower middle section and a wider, pointy head. And a traditional horse head forged as pommel. Hope all this info helps 🙌🏻🙌🏻

I've only used one once, but I was mindblown by just how ergonomic and "right" it felt in the hand; cuts like a sword, chops like an axe and stabs like, well, you can't have everything right?

The Iberians very likely didn’t call this sword a falcata. That is a 19th-ish century invention from the Latin word for “beak-shaped”.

the names are so interesting. just by the names and the characteristics of the sword alone ( falcat or machaira) it's an obvious ancestor of the falchion and machete

Immediate thought on being removed from the sheath: "That looks like a big kukri."
lindybeige: "It's like a giant kukri."
    Me: Oh good.
Though to be honest, only reason I know what a kukri is, is due to Pathfinder (Rogue) for crit-fishing (as it has 18-20/x2)

Falcata, the celtic-iberian sword. So effective some spanish-roman soldiers disregarded their gladius for that.

@Lindybeige, tip, remember to pin your link in the comments so your link stays on top. I don't know what I am not seeing but I can't see the link. I will find the video anyway but just an FYI.
