Run DMC wanted to cover the song, and when they went to ask Steve Tyler for permission to do so, he said he'd only allow it if they let him play on it, too. They were more than willing to accept those terms. In retrospect, it was a huge win-win for both acts.

@@terrymead4024 that’s right. Jam Master Jay came into the studio with this beat but Rev Run and DMC couldn’t get any lyrics down for it. Rick knew the song and asked if they had ever heard the original since it came out 10 years prior to RunDMC ever hearing this, he played the original, told them they should cover it, then had the idea of bringing in Aerosmith to record it with them.

@@MrWhoevr Yeah but he specifically said "relaunched". Perry and Whitford had left the band and sales of the '82 album weren't great. When they rejoined the band Aerosmith still only managed a gold record compared to the album after the video which was 5x Platinum. Yeah they got sober in between as well which helped but without the WTW video who knows if MTV puts those Permanent Vacation videos into heavy rotation like they did.
To your point yes of course they were huge before MTV but there is no denying they had fallen off, 3 underperforming albums and smaller venues and the changing lineups made for a rough time.

In the video, the two bands are in separate practice rooms divided by a thin wall. Each band can hear the other play. As Aerosmith plays 'walk this way' Run DMC begins rapping to it.
At some point, the wall is broken down and the two bands play together... Symbolic of the divide between rap and rock and the video helped both bands gain new fans from each other's fan base.

You Have to WATCH THE VIDEO Guys!!!! You miss so much of so many records by not watching the videos!! They tell half the story! Especially this one and things like Pink Floyd and others also..
THIS record collaboration was Ground breaking at this time!! They collaborated and merged the genres Rap and Heavy Metal BASICALLY, one to prove it could be done! and I think in America to "break down stereotypes" that "black people had to listen to rap" and "white people had to listen to rock" and "never the twain shall cross" so to speak, so they made this and the video is brilliant as it shows Run DMC one side of a fake brick wall and Steve Tyler and Aerosmith on the other side of the wall and almost battling eachother from each side of the wall musically, then eventually they kick the wall down as a metafore
to "breaking down walls of the segregation and stereotypes" in pop music culture and "what you can listen to.." that's how I remember it 'being portrayed' over here in England anyway, as being the "importance" of this Record, in America (so to speak). Was never an issue here, but in the US, it was always separate streams of music for white and black people generally.. as stupid as that is. It's not the same nowadays, but mainly due to this record and the ones that followed it and also by the odd crossover stars like black country music stars and white rappers etc etc which also never happened way back in their genres infancy..
    Cheers from London England 👍😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

As a white kid growing up in the '80s, this was probably one of the first raps I ever heard. You captured some of my thoughts I've always had about it. In hip hop, typically, a rapper raps OVER an older song or sample. Here, it felt like Run DMC just sang the original song, except they weren't singing but rapping. It makes me think that the original (which came out in 1975) has sort of a proto-rap quality to it. Actually, there's a lot of music from the '70s that has that feel; much of the funk genre is somewhat of a predecessor to hip hop, and you can detect its roots in blues itself--all stuff that Aerosmith was being influenced by when they created the original song. In the Run DMC version, I've rarely seen a hip hop song bring out this dynamic more vividly. You can practically hear the evolution of the genre itself.

Were amazing albums (regardless of what the people who only like 70’s Aerosmith think, I love all Aerosmith decades myself) this may have made them more known to people who listened to hip hop and rap but I doubt it made them go out and buy Aerosmith records. It was us rock fans who did that, and I would say mtv helped a lot because they played Aerosmith videos like crazy, and that is probably why they did so much better in later decades than many of their peers, if you look at the classic rock artists who continued through to the 80’s and 90’s well, they were the one putting out videos. The thing some of today's rap is missing is this type of edge. This was iconic. MTV was challenged by David Bowie for it's lack of Black artists on the channel. A partnership between an established Rick Band and a well know Rap group to it's audience bridged the gaps of music. If you listen to NWA and Public Enemy, Ice T many artists back in the day were bringing hard lyrics with a harder sound to rap.

I think its the studio version. Lex good observation. Tyler does rap a little in the original song. Lol. So, it was a smooth transition into this rap/rock mix. Tyler is also just a funky, soulful singer at times. Also on the DJ record scratching sounds on the turntables, which was very prominent during the early rap years (late '70s, '80s, and early '90s). Lex is good at picking up those things. Brad as well. Yes same lyrics. Rappers and rock/metal/punk bands started collaborating a lot during later '80s and '90s, '00s.

It was both a cover and a collaboration. It was the idea of the legendary producer Rick Rubin who wanted RUN DMC to do this song, which they did reluctantly. They thought the lyrics were hillbillyish. Due to drugs and inner band conflicts, Aerosmith had seen a big decline in sales. This song blew up and was in regular rotation on MTV, which Aerosmith wasn't really a part of. The following year, Aerosmith released their comeback album Permanent Vacation, which put them back on the map, followed up by Pump and Get A Grip, etc.

Yall should look into the Judgement Night soundtrack. It was the bridge between this and NuMetal. Each track was a rock band with a rap group.
Also check out Living Colour, Fishbone, Bad Brains, 247 Spyz, Follow For Now for some 80s 90s black rock.

  • @purplebeard1526

The lyrics are about 90% the same. Run dmc listened to the original and wrote out the lyrics as they heard them then rapped them. The og video is great. Saved Aerosmith 's career and brought run dmc to new fans. The collaboration also spawned the rock/metal w' rap that would lead anthrax/public enemy collaboration, onyx/biohazard, and then numetal and groups like ratm....then onto the judgment night soundtrack.

If you're interested in hearing pretty much the only band that has successfully managed to fuse heavy rock and rap/hiphop and make it sounds awesome, go listen to some *Rage Against The Machine.*
they're quite heavy though, so to ease into them you could start with one of their calmer songs like "Renegades of Funk"'
      move onto songs such as:
      Killing In The Name
      Bulls On Parade
      Know Your Enemy
      Testify
      Take The Power Back
      People of the Sun
Year of the Boomerang (don't jump into this one because it has very heavy parts that might put you off IF you're not ready for it)

This was the first Rock/Rap Correlation. And it couldn’t of happened to two great icons. It helped Aerosmith relevant again! Back in that time RUN DMC was up and coming and for my money it helped them into superstardom! Because that combination never happened again and it helped bands like Anthrax and Public Enemy to get together Which personally it was my favorite correlation!

Even though I stopped listening to rap long ago, they will always hold a special place in my musical heart. Think the original Aerosmith song came out in 72 or 73 and I guess could be considered one of the first rap songs ever with the cadence.
