Sega may not be the gaming powerhouse it once was, but SONIC will forever be a classic video game hero. But despite the loving nostalgia I hold for Sonic, his games don’t always make the most sense. Chaos Emeralds, for example, are one of the more ridiculous aspects of any gaming franchise. Or are they? The idea behind chaos emeralds is that they’re powerful battery-like rocks. As crazy as that sounds, it’s a lot closer to reality than you might think!

Just to clarify...
I'm not using the Sonic comics to "prove" the theory by any means. The conclusion that the Emeralds are quartz is based solely on evidence from the games: Color and Behavior. I'm then using the comic lore to draw parallels that I thought were interesting as I researched, like the radiation and compression machine. So the fact that the comic lore isn't canon doesn't have any actual bearing on the conclusion that I reached in the theory...or maybe the radioactive quartz means that lore is more canon than you might think... ;)

I absolutely DESPISE MYSELF FOR KNOWING THIS, but in the same origin comics that’s being quoted, it specifically states that the Xorda’s gene bombs interacted with “beryl deposits” underground, and that originally, all chaos emeralds were in fact green and were quite numerous. It wasn’t until some “crisis on infinite earths” level shenanigans that I don’t recall the specifics of, that the multiple green emeralds were fused into the singular green emerald, with the other “emeralds” being transported in from other planets, and therefore likely having a different mineral composition, thus explaining their unusual color.
I know this too :D and was going to write a comment about it. then I saw your comment and decided to up vote it. really this whole theory picked and choses what lore it wants while ignoring the rest. if you think about it all the gems are grey unless energized. and grey is a color for beryl crystal.
Shaun Martin yeah, MatPat seems to have a tendency to cherry pick certain pieces of info to better suit the “theory”. I was also going to mention that the emerald’s alternate universe versions are known as “Anarchy Beryl” but decided against it.

Just want to point out. The pink gem in Sonic Mania is actually called Phantom Ruby and is no more related to the Chaos Emeralds than the Time Stones are.

Topaz isn't a quartz and sapphires can be any color other than red or dark pink. Yes, if a ruby is a pink that's fairly light in color, it is still a ruby.

Something noted in the Sonic Wiki, the 7 Chaos Emeralds are meant to be based on the colour spectrum. You have the 3 primary colours in Red, Green and Blue, and for secondary colours, Red and Blue make Magenta (Purple), Green and Blue make Cyan (Light Blue) and Red and Green make Yellow. All the colours combined create White Light, aka the Clear Emerald.

Well, that's just one instance where he messed up. The other being the two games that prove his theory absolutely wrong. The emeralds aren't the color given to them, but rather the energy within them makes them that color. The emeralds are dark gray, all 7 of them. MatPat himself said emeralds can be green or a dark gray. Yet he ignored Sonic Adventure and Sonic Unleashed, the two games that absolutely proved him wrong. In SA, the emeralds only lose their negative energy, causing them to develop a slightly grayish tone, but kept some color due to the positive energy. Later in Unleashed, they lose all of their energy and turn a solid dark gray.
Doesn’t disprove anything about being quartz.

That's true. I don't think it'd be fair to blame MatPat for the people that disproportionately take his theories as fact, but it's a little annoying that he constantly brings up old theories when they have barely any relevance. I wouldn't say that makes him a bad person, but I will say it makes him look a bit worse. No offence to him.

Because in Sonic Adventure and Sonic X you can use the chaos emerald’s powers with your emotions. Chaos was made because everybody’s heart was filled with hate while trying to get the chaos emeralds. So since Eggman doesnt use that power for love he’d probably create another chaos or do something even worse. Thats how Sonic became Super Sonic in Sonic X. Everybody gave sonic their emeralds in friendship which made them recharge.

Actually you were right about the Chaos Emeralds being different beryls. In one of the issues of the Sonic Archie comics the cyan one was called an aquamarine. That must mean that they’re all types of beryls. The purple one could be a bixbite just like the red one is. Bixbite color can range from red to reddish pink to vibrant pinkish purple. It is odd having 2 of the Chaos Emeralds be bixbite, it would’ve made more sense if they kept the pink one and called it morganite instead of having a purple one.

Just call em' the Chaos Crystals. It's accurate to the way they work, has a nice ring to it, doesn't sound to dissimilar to emeralds, and it works with the theory that they are actually superpowered quartz crystals.
Chaos Energy in of itself is different from regular energy.
Chaos Energy has the power to transform its users, even without absorbing the gems themselves.
Hell, you don't even NEED the emeralds anymore after initial exposure, as seen in the Fleetway Editions with Sonic and Super Sonic.
So while the Chaos Emeralds may not be emeralds, and Quartz may be the closest IRL match, it doesn't mean they work the same way.
I believe the Chaos Emeralds are called such because of their association with the Master Emerald, a gem of which is green in color, and the RIGHT shade of green; dark.
The emeralds are infused with Chaos Energy, an other worldly power that, according to the Archie comics, are from an Alien Species known as the Drakons. The Emeralds are alien gems, they don't HAVE to abide by Earthly gemstones.
Though I will agree that the Chaos Emeralds (except for the green one) may not be Emeralds at all.
So, I guess you could say...

1: I'd like to point out that the one gem that's been above the other 7 since the early days, the *Master Emerald*, is in fact green.
2: The "8th" gem shown in Sonic Mania isn't actually a chaos emerald. It's an entirely separate gem known as the Phantom Ruby.
4:07, funny that emeralds are in the beryl family because in the archie comics, the anti-sonic known as scourge uses a version called anarchy beryl. I always wonder why it was called that, now I know.

One problem with this theory. The Archie comics mention that all the different colors come from different planets other than mobius. The one that does come from mobius is green.
An oversight, perhaps, but how does it affect the conclusion? Quartz is made of very common elements and is likely to occur on other planets. There's quartz on Mars, for instance.

May I remind you MatPat, that the Sonic games are on a different planet? Mobius could have a different geological structure than the earth. Therefore, the colors or color( at this point I am not done with the video) like purple could happen on Mobius but not on earth. So, they could still be beryl. now here is where it gets spooky and a bit "mystical"
emeralds have a very unique atomic alignment just look up an X-ray diffraction image of the mineral.
Then look up the ancient symbol for light and the Universe called the Merkaba.
Coincidence probably but imagine if you where able to get gemstone so perfect and so carefully cut that every atom is in perfect alignment, we have no idea what it could do in real life but i have strange theory that deep in the strange quantum field, energy exists in a higher state, but is so high it basically is just nothingness but also ...well everything-ness and is looking for a way to stablize since its in CHOAS as state of eternal flux in which eveything and nothing can happen all at once.
IF this theory is true my hypotheses is that this perfect alignment of atoms may actually act as some kind of subatomic quantum lighting rod.
Bringing this "endless" energy from that plane to our more stabilized plane.
In short i think mankind could some how make REAL Chaos Emeralds, and man wouldn't that be impressive.
