The new Sonic movie is FULL of hidden gems, the most important of which has to be how ADORABLE the redesign of Sonic ended up. That's not the point of this theory, though. No, today I am focusing on one key detail from the movie - Sonic's shoes. Specifically, the fact that Sonic seems to keep ruining them. You see, this detail says something VERY important about the way Sonic runs. What is that? Watch and find out!

I know this is a joke, and I too find it funny but I would like to say that your arms behind you would cause drag
He’s also running like a sprinter and a proper lean puts the ideal impact location on the ball of the foot
Yo there was a frickin huge debate a couple of comments down somebody was like “Um HeS sPrInTiNg” and we all were like “Um No HeS rEaLlY nOt” but you are correct he is running more like a sprinter because it puts less force on the heels which can get sprinters to run smoother. Science, man
I see the two of you are men of culture as well
Shoes for sprinting are way different from long-distance running shoes as well. The absorbtion of your actual downward muscle-burst is way too high to be compensated by the "bouncing" effect. Also the wholes/claws could function like spikes.
Sonic run like a fukin shinobi 😁
And in the ground.
Hey Mat!! Just wanted to note one thing. Another reason Sonic might be running on his toes is because that is what professional sprinters do in the real world. To gain acceleration and velocity, sprinters run on their toes and lean forward so that they are more aerodynamic. This makes their speed faster and in turn, makes them a better sprinter. The speed Sonic is going makes me think that not only is it more comfortable for him, but it is also a better running style for running fast instead of long periods of time.
dude i was watching this video and as a person who does track sonic is running right
Yo, I'd say Sonic is a sprinter NOT a marathon runner: his whole thing is his speed not endurance. Sprinters land ball first or slightly flat footed, not heel first.
I was about to comment the same thing, great minds think alike lol
@@doou_955 I was about to comment the same thing, great minds think alike lol
Thats not necessarily true. When runners are training, we always train with heel striking, and roll back to front to get as much explosiveness as possible. We only ever run on our toes for a finish kick in distance or the last 20m or so for sprints.
I remember watching an animation of one of his models in a game (I think it was his running animation in Sonic Unleashed) and he was sticking the floor with the front of his shoes.
🤔
Does it matter?
I feel anyone can see Sonic as either a sprinter or a marathon runner.
Remember he is a blue hedgehog that can run faster then the speed of sound.
Mat's video was focus on one aspect of runners. Not saying that others focusing on sprinting is wrong.
Both can be valid. Considering Sonic is not human.

Mattpat: *talking about how the heel strike is superior for marathon type of runners*
Me who is a sprinter, taught to do forefoot striking because in sprinting heel striking slows you down an exuberant amount: *Awkward sweating*
Literally my thoughts while watching that part lol
It was so painful to watch
Yeah this was my same thought. Sonic's all about speed and MatPat was comparing him to marathon runners instead of sprinters haha. Almost like he did too much analysis
Please compare against #Sprinters not #Marathon runners.
Even when I was a Mile / Two Miler we spent most of the run on the forefoot. I believe the advantage from backfoot striking doesn't kick in until long distances like Marathons.
Matt: "Sonic's running sucks."
Me: RUNNING IS RUNNING.
Yessir
Ya
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Why are you running????
Yeah I agree
... and running sucks. That's why we invented horses (and, later, cars).
Whenever it comes to running, I always try to use the forefoot method. While most runners use the heel strike, you don't feel that kind of impact using the forefoot method. It's especially noticeable when you don't have on proper shoes.
Running is almost like jumping in terms of impact. Jumping and landing on your feet flat will resort in risk of injury, so it's much better landing on your forefeet since it forces the posture of your legs to be bent, allowing you to bounce and equal out the energy. While running isn't exactly jumping, the same concepts still apply. Heel strike running sends the impact up your legs, but with forefoot running, you're equaling out that energy by forcing your legs to be in a more springy position.
The best example of this is basically any animal whose hind legs are made for running and jumping, like cats, rabbits, and dogs. They're not using their heels, they do all that on their toes.
Yeees
I find it it real sincere that Mat probably never did sprint track races, therefore he thought sonics shoes were so strange. But i love that in his research he was able to discover that Sonic's weird holes were actually very reasonable. Good job Mat 👍

I feel like you're missing a HUGE point in the argument, and that is that Sonic isn't running, he's sprinting. Sure, he goes long distances like a long distance runner, but he's going so fast that he can only go long distances. D.Rs and Sprinters have very different ways of running, because of how they have to keep themselves healthy. Striking your toes on the ground for 3000m is going to ruin your shins while 100m isn't. As a sprinter, you strike with your toes, because it makes you faster. As a D.R. you strike your heal, because it doesn't put all your weight into your shins.
Sonic's style of running is a sprint, so naturally he would use his toes. My shoes always wear out at the toes, whether they're my walking or running shoes, because I've taught myself to run that way as a sprinter myself. And I've tried both running styles and using your heal when trying to sprint is a terrible disadvantage, because there's more motion to go through. And with every high action, and high energy thing Sonic gets himself into, he's gonna want to run as fast as he can, so he's going to sprint.
I hope this wasn't too rambly, but I just wanted to put that out there. Hope it makes sense to someone, and have a nice day. :)
I run XC and track and this is 100% the way to run, even in distance races when you kick at the end you end up rolling onto your toes instead of heel striking
K didnt read the who S.A but k
This is actually pretty good. More or less this would be the case for Sonic.
Always nice to see a fellow runner (sprints gang)
Also, as Mythbusters always used to say, "Gravity Doesn't Scale." Sonic is moving so fast gravity doesn't have time to start pulling him down between steps, so his shock-load is way less than a human sprinter or DR would be.
I'm barely three minutes in and I feel called out because I've always gotten the holes at the front of my shoes, and apparently that's weird •~•
You said that because you didn't watch the whole video yet when writing this comment
Also, yeah, holes in the front of the shoes. That's not weird.
I’m really hoping MatPat will do more Sonic Movie theories for the sequel. Maybe how strong would Knuckles have to be to go properly go toe to toe with Sonic? Either way the more love these movies get the better. I am SO STOCKED for the sequel. April can’t come fast enough.

Matpat: we regular people will run on our heels
Sprinters everywhere: am I a joke to you ?
Olamide Adekola ikr 😂😂😂
True
My thought was that sonic was a sprinter. And thats why their were holes in his shoe like that
Yes, Society has taught us to run on our heels, but that does not make it correct,
or the best way to run,
He's saying that because regular people don't Sprint or run in any way, shape or form nowadays, so yeah, it's because most people lack practice and so they compensate with the shoes
So wait, my hypothesis in middle school that we should be running on our toes to smooth out the impacts and emulate how animals run was correct? Huh.
Unfortunately, no. Matpat missed a few details.
Whilst toe striking is in theory better than heel striking in every way (no idea where he got the bs about top runners heel striking, the majority of them don't and will tell you to avoid it). As heel striking is exclusively a biomechanically incorrect movement induced by shoes which prevent proper form. The best shoes just manage to compensate for the incredibly inefficient motion.
Toe striking is also not ideal. As it prevents your foot from naturally rebounding the way its supposed to. Absorbing energy instead of storing it and bouncing.
The ideal form according to the world foremost experts, is a tripod landing. Ie. Toe and heel strike simultaneously. This gives you the best rebound, as well as the least joint strain. This is how our bodies are designed to run, biomechanically. And why our feet are arched. Fun fact, if you look at the few remaining hunter gatherer cultures, this is how they run.
@@Erowens98 That sounds like flat-footing, which is extremely shocking to my body.
@@StapleCactus it takes some getting used to. After all your fascial system is probably adapted to improper form atm and there are some differences in which muscles are involved. But the research has show, that a tripod landing, slightly ahead of your body, almost directly under it, decreases stress overall and produces the most efficient movement.
@@Erowens98 I apparently have an issue that went undiscovered as a kid that prevents my foot from bending as far up as other people. Maybe that's why I find toe-striking more comfortable. When I was a child, I always stood/walked on my toes and doctors said I'd just grow out of it instead of looking into why. Even now, regular walking pulls on the calf tendon.
Relatable!
Also (Im a Sport Performance Coach), in training for sprinting, the acceleration phase is spent toe/midfoot striking with the majority of the body over or center of gravity (so basically we're leaned forward in order to accelerate easier). Perhaps Sonic is still accelerating, never reaching his top speed?
Why aren't sprinters considered in this theory? Sprinter's shoes have spikes on the forefoot region which emphasizes the fact that running on your toes generates greater force to run faster 🤷🏻♂️ just a thought
bc then matpat wouldnt have a video
@@bobbob5255 I don't think you're giving matpat enough credit haha I have no doubt he could still have a video. If anything, he could have used the sprinter's fact to emphasize everything he said about running on your forefoot. Regardless, I was just surprised it wasn't mentioned at all, I think it was still a good video.
Wrong, sprinters run on the forefoot region just before the toes its called dorsiflexion
Sonics shoes don’t have spikes
@@D0p3seller I'm pretty sure dorsiflexion is the motion in which you flex your toes towards the sky/shin 🤔
I’m more concerned that you think sonic is “marathon running.” He’s constantly at a full sprint, with his shoulders leaned in front of his toes upon footfall. Meaning he’s “digging in” and pushing off with his toes.
That's what I was thinking. It's also the same reason why the running shoes professional sprinters wear only have spikes in the front of the sole.
EXACTLY THANK YOU
I was coming down here to say just that exact same thing. He has more in common with a sprinter then a marathon runner, cause he's gotta go fast.
Dark3y3 also the reason why his arms are back and not swinging is help reduce wind Resistance which would be quite high when running at that speed and more of a Concern than using your arms for Momentum which is less effective at that point since the speed is enough momentum already
What’s also odd Is that Mat talked about heel striking while talking about marathon runners. Heel striking is used by sprinters. Marathon runners and cross country runners usually don’t need extra force.
I feel the need to point out that his first shoes were probably second hand. He can't exactly stroll into a store and buy a pair, and with his role model being a sherrif I doubt he'd steal them, so he probably got them second hand when they were thrown out/donated
Thank you for coming to my TED talk
So Sonic’s just a sprinter who doesn’t get tired, from the boom universe we know that he never goes out of energy.

I was thinking the exact same thing. But my question was why the shoe wore out at the base. Any pair of shoes I've owned has gotten holes at the toe first, so wouldn't a similar situation happen with sonic? Would it be different because he's traveling at faster speeds?
this video just, urgh, like, take a run with spikes and then see if "there's more foam at the back"

Isn't Sonic just a sprinter who's just so fast that he covers large distances. That's why he uses the toe strike
I just thought this but also isn't that speed for him compared to us jogging. Like he never looks tired.
Exactly! He never spends more than 30 seconds running. To him, a 1000 miles is a short run.
No, it's shown he's taking small steps at really fast rates.
@@daniellepettway5009 its a movie plot that shows reason why he is never tired from running but it could be this thing where he haves the ability to run forever. Its a person who able to run forever without stopping from some thing he wasnt born with that prevents him from stop running for so long

Running Heel toe is unnatural. It's only due to Nike ads that we do that
In my opinion they have no right to restrict the shoes.
You should be able to use whatever shoe is best. It's like in formula 1 how Mercedes makes the most powerful engine which allows them to be the fastest. They work hard to be the best and they win races because of it.

MatPat: "Every time I've worn through a pair of shoes I've worn through the heel."
Me, who always gets holes on the toes of my shoes: "......what?"
The cushion runs (ha) out first on the heel. I think the toe holes you are talking about comes when the bottom of the shoe starts to peel away from the main part (sorry I don't know shoe anatomy), which I have had happen a few times.
And I always wear out the top of my shoes first or the glue holding the sole to the cloth.
@@autumn4442 From my experience running track and XC you usually get similar wear on the heel and toes because even if you land on the heel you toe off of the ground, the Vaporflys are designed to roll your foot from the heelstrike to toe off position with minimal effort which is where a lot of the efficiency comes from
@delplays probably, but it also is partly because I kept buying from payless, I stopped having the problem after I started buying more expensive shoes, now I just need to figure out where to get shoes where my feet actually rests above the soles.
All my shoes, the sole eventually cracks under the ball of my foot where I walk on it. Some folks just naturally walk and run on the ball of their foot. I'm pretty sure it's as genetic as handedness or whatever.
Plot twist:
This video was actually a Nike Vaporfly advertisement
So I'm not the only one who see it 😂
Effective. I now want a pair and I don't even run.
Maybe he was sponsered and this was his idea XD
Ikr
Ok now I hate matpat now
I've come to watch this video again because I just learned that I've apparently been running on my toes all these years without realizing it.
I literally can't heel strike.
I tried it as soon as I was told I was running the wrong way, but it's as if I'm just walking fast instead of actually running, and it requires so much efforts compared to my usual running.
I remember one time I straight up melted the inside of my shoe when I ran to school after missing the bus. It was roughly 2.6 miles and I got there before my bus did. And mom didn't get me new shoes so I had to go the rest of my time in that school with melted shoes I literally had to cut my socks out of. My point is, while raw power can get you pretty far as it did me, I never learned proper running form and now my knees hurt over three years later.
Also in all of the games he’s heel running when at slower speeds but when he starts going faster he toe runs. So Sonic DOES know what he’s doing
For long distances, run on heel, for sprinting speeds, toes. Matpat did a poor job explaining this or actually doesn't know that marathon and distance runners do not represent all runners like sprinters. Usain bolt ran his records without his heels ever touching the ground.
Science strategy, baby!!!

Some people also run on the front of their toes due to heel striking. Imagine the amount of force going through sonics knees and heels each time he would run.

Mat Pat: Heel runners experience a jolt from the force they exert, throwing off their natural rhythm.
Me, who was already a toe runner: HA! I'm not crazy!
Yeah, I run on my toes too, for exactly the same reason.
Exactly
@@sambaxter7035 depends on what distance and pace, but as a general guideline it's a terrible piece of advice. In a sprint, middle distance run (800m/1500m) or where the pace is rapidly changing it is advised to run on your toes as the leg will create a spring and the force required to increase the run's pace, while long-distance doesn't need that explosiveness so a heel strike is recommended. The human body isn't designed for a flat foot (heel strike ) run, it's incredibly bad for our ankles and our knees due to the impact causing shockwaves throughout the ankle and knee causing a lot of internal bone striking, which is why athletes are told to run through a finish rather than into a sudden stop to reduce that internal striking. What is best is a mix, as they have different advantages based on what the circumstance and the foot is. It's why you see soccer midfielders switch back and forth in their stance because their role requires them to be running two to three times the distance as any other position.
I don’t just use the toe strike...I run ON my toes😁
Yup! I learned the hard way when i first started running that i had to correct my way of running. SHIN SPLINTS HURT!!
“Is it the shoes?” Is also a prevalent question in weightlifting. People are very picky about their shoes.

This video is highly frustrating. If MatPat actually did his research he would learn the proper terms. Heel striking is not landing on you heel, it refers to over reaching trying to take steps that are too long which results in your feet landing past your center of gravity which slows you down. Secondly Kipchoge does't even land on his heel, instead he lands on the middle of his feet / close to the forefoot. I am disappointed in mat Pat's research :(

Btw even for us toe striking when sprinting makes you faster since it lets you take more steps which means u get to the end faster you should probably try it

So can forefoot striking for different reasons... but if someone is a natural striker in whatever way and isn't getting a significantly high number of injuries from that they can generally stick with that type of strike.
The vaporflys look like they've got a really stacked heel but they actually only have a heel-toe drop of 8mm, which is a medium drop shoe (although on the high end of medium) - but the compressibility and rebound of the foam combined with the carbon fibre plate have more of an effect on the shoe's performance than the drop height.
I have to note also that the runners effectively utilising vaporflys will not be using a heel strike or forefoot strike because the rebound action of the shoe doesn't work the best with either of these - they'll actually be doing something closer to midfoot striking, and engaging as much of the underside of the foot as possible to transfer the maximum amount of energy into the foam and back.
Also forefoot striking means you're able to utilise your ankle dorsiflexion and also keep your knees more flexed so your whole leg acts like a spring which is the best strike for pure speed! Heel striking is generally not recommended for anything other than walking because of the potential for overstriding and hyperextension of the knee, which can send a large impulse straight through the whole leg, potentially jarring the knees and hips. I found research articles showing the force response curves for different types of foot strike and it's widely shown that heel striking has a sharp initial force followed by a small, sharp drop in force (which will be dissipated through the knee and hip joints 😬) before the force increases smoothly to its peak, whereas other strike patterns have soother force response curves, meaning you don't have the unnecessary impulse from the high rate of vertical loading in heel strikes, and also don't put as much total force through your body - avoiding acute injuries and also reducing overall wear and tear.
So... TL:DR Sonic is running more efficiently, and safely than a heel striker... and considering he is built for speed, heel would be the worst possible way for him to run 😅 (although him not being human means his physiology will be different, he must have really robust and inflammation resistant calves and achilles tendons 😅).

Sonic when he runs at maximum velocity he turns into a complete hyper ball. Is it addressed in this video? Nope..🤦♂️ How bout the movie?..Of course not 🤦♂️
Ok
I remember somewhere in some form of media about Sonic that the "infinity signs" actually was his own special style of "figure 8 running" or something, which made his feet hit twice as often, so Sonic could run substantially faster than normal because of it. Naturally, this doesn't work for a lot of reasons.

Sonic should be forefoot running, he’s obviously a sprinter, given his speed... he’s supposed to be on toes. Sprinters are digging into the ground to get more speed. Which is what sonic is doing, so he goes faster. Also, the vaporfly isn’t famous for the heel cushion, it’s the carbon fiber plate in the midsole. Gives more spring in each step, uses less energy.
Yeah I was expecting him to cover the sprinting side of things, in terms of fore foot running
You are goddamn right. Matpat comparing sonic to maratonians is just retarded, he is, as you said, a sprinter.
@deana Michelle no one was talking to you so shut up and go away
If he's a sprinter, shouldn't he be more worn out after less time? Or are there some sprinters who have really good stamina?
@@chelle2469 The 400m is a perfect example of an endurance sprint. You have to have good stamina to be able to run a quarter mile as fast as people do. Also, the 800m is very similar. The top athletes that run the 800m are running each 400m faster than most people can run just one. In the end though, he is so fast the fatigue never really hits him, obviously shown by his expressions after running an insane distance. In the end, he should never be heel running as he obviously doesn't get tired so there is no need.
Hey matpat, I was wondering if you could make a theory on whether the eggpod from the sonic movie would be possible.
I was going to rip you apart on how heel striking is awful for your body but you took care of that! Good job doing your research!

My track coach always has sprinter land on the pads of there toes. You save time when you run like that because you don't have to wait for your foot to get to the right position to push off the ground, it's already in the right position. Also, most kleats have the majority of the spikes in the front because that's where you push off the ground and need the most traction. Sonic runs so fast it's basically a prolonged sprint, so comparing his running style to people who run marathons might throw off your data.
Big brains
Yes
theory debunked,nice bro
I have broken the ball of my foot by running like that, there is very marginal benefit and a whole lot of negatives
I do athletics and my coach says the exact same thing
Heel vs Forefoot:
If you're running for distance and endurance, then you should Heel Strike.
If you're running for speed (sprinting) then you should Forefoot Strike. Stay on your toes, lean forward, and swing those arms in straight lines, not across the body. (I was a sprinter on the track team in HS, kids.)
Sonic is a SPRINTER. Granted, he can do it for weirdly long distances, but he is definitely sprinting. FOREFOOT.
Facts (I was a sprinter too)
I do long distance and my coach says not to use heels because you wast energy pulling yourself forward but don't use your toes as much as if your sprinting because obviously your not sprinting
Thank goodness someone else knows, I got to 2:30 and was loosing my mind when he said running wrong. I ran hurdles and mid distance in HS.
Yeah when we do speed training we have to run on our toes
Not trying to nitpick but modern sprinting schools of thought prefer an upright runner once at top speed. For all you sprinter's out there, don't lean at top speed!
I love the new look, it's awesome! But at the same time, you now bear a strong resemblance to my brother, and I can never unsee that now XD.
lol I'd never done the research myself but here it is. When I was growing up I'd been told so many times by my parents that it's a shame our schools don't teach kids how to properly walk and run so you have adults that run poorly. I never understood that especially having grown up here where "everybody is a unique little snowflake" and we all can do things however we choose. But here you can see that just the difference between using your heel and your toes makes a tremendous difference in how well you run. AND that the companies developing shoes over here have created a product for the wrong kind of running form "based on their research."
Anyway because of that I'd like to add that the more important reason my parents were upset by seeing people walking and running improperly was that landing with you body weight on your heel can cause pain because of how many nerve clusters are in the heel. Meanwhile the toes are specifically designed to cushion the pressure of taking a step. The more you know. Go figure!

Most of the fastest real life animals lead with their toes
well animals also have padding under their individual toes, no? They are 'spongy' so the same logic applies, mother nature simply chose their toes to have it and not the heels
I also run and walk on my toes for almost no reason and always have. I don't know. I mean, the dude is a hedgehog.
I run on my toes all the time. I can lean forward, so I go faster, land lighter, and it's quieter. 🤷♀️ It's something coyotes do, and I mean, I'm not a runner or anything, but it works.
This whole video was also done in terms of marathon runners, where at least from my own track experience sprinters are actually taught to run on their toes because you can get more speed out of it, its just not as efficient so for distance runners you run with the heel because your never a top speed your looking for the fastest efficient way to run. This is also shown in track spikes where sprinting spikes are centered at the very front, but distance spikes are slightly more spread towards the back (although still at the front)
Blue Moon you like shiny umbreon to?!
Running like a sprinter makes you lean forward a bit making the forefoot the best spot to hit first. Track spikes have the spikes all in the front and landing there would give you the most traction
I ran forefoot competitively in Cross Country because of my severe shin splints. It improved my times by a quarter.
Ok but sonic isn’t marathon running, he just travels incredible long distances because he’s so fast, but for him it’s just a casual sprint
Isn't the definition of a marathon run just a long distance run?
He's still getting in the same amount of steps tho, his shows would wear out faster
You know you're a fatass when the words "casual" and "sprint" being put in the same sentence sounds weird to you.
@@Jacob-rt6on a marathon is a meant to take a long length of time while a sprint is meant to be very quick, although the word marathon also comes from the word for long distance who h confuses things
Jacob Wagers but if you sprint really fast, fast enough to cover long distances, then it still counts as sprinting rather than a marathon.
