    The new Sonic movie is FULL of hidden gems, the most important of which has to be how ADORABLE the redesign of Sonic ended up. That's not the point of this theory, though. No, today I am focusing on one key detail from the movie - Sonic's shoes. Specifically, the fact that Sonic seems to keep ruining them. You see, this detail says something VERY important about the way Sonic runs. What is that? Watch and find out!

      Shoes for sprinting are way different from long-distance running shoes as well. The absorbtion of your actual downward muscle-burst is way too high to be compensated by the "bouncing" effect. Also the wholes/claws could function like spikes.

    Hey Mat!! Just wanted to note one thing. Another reason Sonic might be running on his toes is because that is what professional sprinters do in the real world. To gain acceleration and velocity, sprinters run on their toes and lean forward so that they are more aerodynamic. This makes their speed faster and in turn, makes them a better sprinter. The speed Sonic is going makes me think that not only is it more comfortable for him, but it is also a better running style for running fast instead of long periods of time.

      Thats not necessarily true. When runners are training, we always train with heel striking, and roll back to front to get as much explosiveness as possible. We only ever run on our toes for a finish kick in distance or the last 20m or so for sprints.

    Whenever it comes to running, I always try to use the forefoot method. While most runners use the heel strike, you don't feel that kind of impact using the forefoot method. It's especially noticeable when you don't have on proper shoes.
    Running is almost like jumping in terms of impact. Jumping and landing on your feet flat will resort in risk of injury, so it's much better landing on your forefeet since it forces the posture of your legs to be bent, allowing you to bounce and equal out the energy. While running isn't exactly jumping, the same concepts still apply. Heel strike running sends the impact up your legs, but with forefoot running, you're equaling out that energy by forcing your legs to be in a more springy position.
    The best example of this is basically any animal whose hind legs are made for running and jumping, like cats, rabbits, and dogs. They're not using their heels, they do all that on their toes.

    I feel like you're missing a HUGE point in the argument, and that is that Sonic isn't running, he's sprinting. Sure, he goes long distances like a long distance runner, but he's going so fast that he can only go long distances. D.Rs and Sprinters have very different ways of running, because of how they have to keep themselves healthy. Striking your toes on the ground for 3000m is going to ruin your shins while 100m isn't. As a sprinter, you strike with your toes, because it makes you faster. As a D.R. you strike your heal, because it doesn't put all your weight into your shins.
    Sonic's style of running is a sprint, so naturally he would use his toes. My shoes always wear out at the toes, whether they're my walking or running shoes, because I've taught myself to run that way as a sprinter myself. And I've tried both running styles and using your heal when trying to sprint is a terrible disadvantage, because there's more motion to go through. And with every high action, and high energy thing Sonic gets himself into, he's gonna want to run as fast as he can, so he's going to sprint.
    I hope this wasn't too rambly, but I just wanted to put that out there. Hope it makes sense to someone, and have a nice day. :)

    • @Erowens98
      @Erowens98 Před 3 lety

      Unfortunately, no. Matpat missed a few details.
      Whilst toe striking is in theory better than heel striking in every way (no idea where he got the bs about top runners heel striking, the majority of them don't and will tell you to avoid it). As heel striking is exclusively a biomechanically incorrect movement induced by shoes which prevent proper form. The best shoes just manage to compensate for the incredibly inefficient motion.
      Toe striking is also not ideal. As it prevents your foot from naturally rebounding the way its supposed to. Absorbing energy instead of storing it and bouncing.
      The ideal form according to the world foremost experts, is a tripod landing. Ie. Toe and heel strike simultaneously. This gives you the best rebound, as well as the least joint strain. This is how our bodies are designed to run, biomechanically. And why our feet are arched. Fun fact, if you look at the few remaining hunter gatherer cultures, this is how they run.

      @@StapleCactus it takes some getting used to. After all your fascial system is probably adapted to improper form atm and there are some differences in which muscles are involved. But the research has show, that a tripod landing, slightly ahead of your body, almost directly under it, decreases stress overall and produces the most efficient movement.

    • @StapleCactus
      @StapleCactus Před 3 lety +1

      @@Erowens98 I apparently have an issue that went undiscovered as a kid that prevents my foot from bending as far up as other people. Maybe that's why I find toe-striking more comfortable. In a sprint, middle distance run (800m/1500m) or where the pace is rapidly changing it is advised to run on your toes as the leg will create a spring and the force required to increase the run's pace, while long-distance doesn't need that explosiveness so a heel strike is recommended. The human body isn't designed for a flat foot (heel strike ) run, it's incredibly bad for our ankles and our knees due to the impact causing shockwaves throughout the ankle and knee causing a lot of internal bone striking, which is why athletes are told to run through a finish rather than into a sudden stop to reduce that internal striking. What is best is a mix, as they have different advantages based on what the circumstance and the foot is. It's why you see soccer midfielders switch back and forth in their stance because their role requires them to be running two to three times the distance as any other position.

Heel striking is not landing on you heel, it refers to over reaching trying to take steps that are too long which results in your feet landing past your center of gravity which slows you down. Oof, heel striking can be really bad even for longer distance running! I used to heel strike and it caused me significant pain and knee problems, mid or forefoot striking and shoes with a smaller heel-toe drop but still a good amount of bounce and cushioning helped with this.
    So can forefoot striking for different reasons... but if someone is a natural striker in whatever way and isn't getting a significantly high number of injuries from that they can generally stick with that type of strike.
    The vaporflys look like they've got a really stacked heel but they actually only have a heel-toe drop of 8mm, which is a medium drop shoe (although on the high end of medium) - but the compressibility and rebound of the foam combined with the carbon fibre plate have more of an effect on the shoe's performance than the drop height.
    I have to note also that the runners effectively utilising vaporflys will not be using a heel strike or forefoot strike because the rebound action of the shoe doesn't work the best with either of these - they'll actually be doing something closer to midfoot striking, and engaging as much of the underside of the foot as possible to transfer the maximum amount of energy into the foam and back.
    Also forefoot striking means you're able to utilise your ankle dorsiflexion and also keep your knees more flexed so your whole leg acts like a spring which is the best strike for pure speed! Heel striking is generally not recommended for anything other than walking because of the potential for overstriding and hyperextension of the knee, which can send a large impulse straight through the whole leg, potentially jarring the knees and hips. I found research articles showing the force response curves for different types of foot strike and it's widely shown that heel striking has a sharp initial force followed by a small, sharp drop in force (which will be dissipated through the knee and hip joints 😬) before the force increases smoothly to its peak, whereas other strike patterns have soother force response curves, meaning you don't have the unnecessary impulse from the high rate of vertical loading in heel strikes, and also don't put as much total force through your body - avoiding acute injuries and also reducing overall wear and tear.
    So... TL:DR Sonic is running more efficiently, and safely than a heel striker... and considering he is built for speed, heel would be the worst possible way for him to run 😅 (although him not being human means his physiology will be different, he must have really robust and inflammation resistant calves and achilles tendons 😅).

Naturally, this doesn't work for a lot of reasons.

    Sonic should be forefoot running, he’s obviously a sprinter, given his speed... he’s supposed to be on toes. Sprinters are digging into the ground to get more speed. Which is what sonic is doing, so he goes faster. Also, the vaporfly isn’t famous for the heel cushion, it’s the carbon fiber plate in the midsole. Gives more spring in each step, uses less energy.

      @@chelle2469 The 400m is a perfect example of an endurance sprint. You have to have good stamina to be able to run a quarter mile as fast as people do. Also, the 800m is very similar. The top athletes that run the 800m are running each 400m faster than most people can run just one. In the end though, he is so fast the fatigue never really hits him, obviously shown by his expressions after running an insane distance. In the end, he should never be heel running as he obviously doesn't get tired so there is no need.

    My track coach always has sprinter land on the pads of there toes. You save time when you run like that because you don't have to wait for your foot to get to the right position to push off the ground, it's already in the right position. Also, most kleats have the majority of the spikes in the front because that's where you push off the ground and need the most traction. Sonic runs so fast it's basically a prolonged sprint, so comparing his running style to people who run marathons might throw off your data.

  • @voxorox
    @voxorox Před 4 lety +111

    Heel vs Forefoot:
    If you're running for distance and endurance, then you should Heel Strike.
    If you're running for speed (sprinting) then you should Forefoot Strike. Stay on your toes, lean forward, and swing those arms in straight lines, not across the body. (I was a sprinter on the track team in HS, kids.)
    Sonic is a SPRINTER. Granted, he can do it for weirdly long distances, but he is definitely sprinting. FOREFOOT.

    @maxverner2341 Před 3 lety +2

    lol I'd never done the research myself but here it is. When I was growing up I'd been told so many times by my parents that it's a shame our schools don't teach kids how to properly walk and run so you have adults that run poorly. I never understood that especially having grown up here where "everybody is a unique little snowflake" and we all can do things however we choose. But here you can see that just the difference between using your heel and your toes makes a tremendous difference in how well you run. AND that the companies developing shoes over here have created a product for the wrong kind of running form "based on their research."
    Anyway because of that I'd like to add that the more important reason my parents were upset by seeing people walking and running improperly was that landing with you body weight on your heel can cause pain because of how many nerve clusters are in the heel. Meanwhile the toes are specifically designed to cushion the pressure of taking a step. The more you know. Go figure!

      This whole video was also done in terms of marathon runners, where at least from my own track experience sprinters are actually taught to run on their toes because you can get more speed out of it, its just not as efficient so for distance runners you run with the heel because your never a top speed your looking for the fastest efficient way to run. This is also shown in track spikes where sprinting spikes are centered at the very front, but distance spikes are slightly more spread towards the back (although still at the front)
