We've done TONS of research on Sonic's speed over the years. From how fast he REALLY is to if he can even survive his own speed - we've covered it all! Well, that's only partially true. Until now we've only turned our Theorist eyes towards the blue hedgehog. That ends today! Enter Tails, the lovable fox sidekick. He's famous for helicoptering his way around with his, you guessed it, tails. What I wanted to know was whether or not Tails SHOULD actually be able to fly. Today Theorists, we are going to find out if this fox is flying high or about to crash and burn!

Tail's tail is actually possible when the left one spins the opposite way of the right one, it won't tangle. This also means he don't need another tail blade to keep him from spinning out like a helicopter would.

Tails might be able to actually fly if he had a different technique. Tails can run 100 miles mph without the use of his tails. If he used his tails as the top helicopter blade and moved his legs in a biking motion he would not only be able to fly, but he would be able to actually go somewhere while flying.

Not really. Tails is an ENGINEER, not a PILOT. Despite what media would tell you, those are two different skills, to say nothing of the fact that helicopters fly completely different from planes. Assuming that an airplane engineer is also capable of being a top pilot simply because they build the machine is like assuming that someone who designs Hondas is automatically qualified to also be a NASCAR driver.

InsideJoke That's completely irrelevant. From the games, it's completely clear that the planes crash not from bad piloting, but from the planes malfunctioning in mid-air, which is a consequence of bad engineering.

I've always argued with myself how unfair an advantage Sonic has over Eggman especially when Tails and Robotnik have the same IQ

But wouldn't the tails collide and he'd fall? If he had the `motor` system in his tail then they'd be spinning the same way, if he didn't then he can't spin them without them getting intertwined. Also the tails wouldn't form one circle above/behind him if they were spinning the opposite direction, they'd be seperate circles.

The thing I respect about Tails is that he always has the High Ground. Matpat, I expected, once underestimated Tail's power and is accordingly trying to discredit Tail's ability to fly. Classic hit-piece.

I can't wait for SEGA to retcon in that Tails has little rotors in his shoes that stablize him. And when you zoom in on them the rotors say "EAT IT MATPAT" Please SEGA make my dreams come true.
tail rotors are only needed on helicopters where the power is coming from the central shaft. what matt failed to look for is the hiller hornet and other experimental helicopters from the 1950's which use tip jets on the rotor blade tips. helicopters with that propulsion don't need tail rotors.

Small note: some drones have three rotors. The way they counteract the torque difference is by tilting the rear rotor for yaw control. Some tricopters tilt the two front rotors instead.
The most common backstory for Tails before he meet Sonic is, he used to get bullied/teased/mocked for having two tails and was seen as an abnormality and everyone avoided him
When Tails saw Sonic, he immediately idolized him and trained himself to be able to keep up with Sonic's speed to become his sidekick, so, he used his two tails to help propel himself and be fast enough

I actually have a pretty valid theory about how tails can fly.
Tails has been considered a Kitsune, a Japanese mythical creature that is known to be a fox with nine tails. When Kitsune's are born, they are like normal foxes, but for each one-hundred years it will grow a tail as well as high intelligence. This explains Tails's intelligence and two tails. Kitsune's also can have mystical and magical powers, like shapeshifting, possessing, ect.
When Kitsune's reach nine-hundred years of age, that's when they are the most intelligent, and will grow a ninth tail in witch they will also turn as white as snow and be able to do even more magical things.
So I think the reason Tails can talk, fly and have high intelligence, is because he's a two-hundred year old kitsune.

There ARE helicopters that get away with having only 1 rotor. Just look up “Helicopter without tail rotor”. They counteract the spinning by venting gas from the engines to make thrust. It is possible for tails to fly and control it. He just has to fart crazy hard. Personally I want to see the math on how much butt power it takes to stabilize a helicopter.

I want to mention that not all helicopters have tail rotors, there are helicopters with a NOTAR system. It means a No Tail Rotor, instead they use exhaust gasses to act as a tail rotor. They will look similar to other helicopters but with air blowing out the sides of the tail section, instead of rotor blades.
Basicall i think if he could fart constantly and control the direction of his rear to couteract the rotational force of his main rotor i think his flying plauseble, if your rules apply.

This is what I call a "Traditional Theory." It's a theory in which Mat goes to certain extents to figure out how things work and see how it applies to a game/character. Some Traditionals include the Assassin's Creed Leap of Faith theory, the one about Starfox's legs, and the one about Dig Dug and popping tomatoes and seeing if the same stuff applies to people. It's the old way of doing things, and I like that. It's a it's a breath of nostalgic air, thanks MatPat. I've been a sub for a long time now and I hope things with your kid work out. Oh the video "Best Boobs in Gaming" is a favorite traditional of mine also.

Hey Matpat, I'm sure this will be lost in the sea of comments, but I have an important theory regarding Super Mario 64. Don't stop reading, because I have some juicy evidence to back it up. Here it goes: the villain of the game is Peach and not Bowser. This might be surprising, because it seems obvious that Bowser is the villain. However, my theory is that Peach used the star power to assume the form of Bowser. Consider this: what are the in-game effects of wielding the star power? First and foremost is the ability to change shape and warp reality, as seen with various bosses given portions of the star power. There's also the ability to speak to Mario "telepathically" without being physically present. Obviously, these both apply to Bowser. Let's see how they apply to Peach. Does she change shape/warp reality? Well, yes. At the end of the game, she appears floating outside the castle. How does she appear? The star taken from Bowser transforms into Peach. We're led to believe that Bowser locked Peach up somehow and that the star power is the key to release her, but what if Bowser being "defeated" was just Peach transforming into the star form and then back into Peach? That's not conclusive evidence, but I have more. There's also the matter of telepathic speech. Obviously, Bowser can do this, but what about other characters? There are a few others. For one, Big Boo's Haunt includes telepathic speech, presumably from the Boo(s) that had stars. There are occasional instructional popups in various worlds, which could just be from Lakitu himself. However, there's one other character that speaks telepathically: Peach. At various points in the game such as Peach's Secret Slide, Peach communicates telepathically to Mario, a power that seems to be reserved for wielders of star power. So it seems plausible that Peach could have been using the star power, but we'll need a little more evidence to prove that she did. My next piece of evidence is the note at the beginning of the game, which says, "Dear Mario: Please come to the castle. I've baked a cake for you. Yours truly, Princess Toadstool." Based on the timing and context of how this is displayed, it's assumed that it was sent and delivered shortly before the intro cutscene, and that Mario left immediately for Peach's castle. We know this because it says she already baked the cake, which she wouldn't say if the letter would take days to deliver. It almost reads like a text message in terms of its timing. There are a couple problems with this. If Peach's letter is to be believed, then in the short interval between the letter being sent and Mario's arrival, Bowser arrived at the castle, overtook the entire thing, found where the star power was hidden, used the star power to bring most of the paintings to life, entered the paintings to give stars to bosses and hide the rest, created various traps in the castle, and still had time to greet Mario at the door. That seems suspiciously like it would take a long time. I'll get back to that in a moment, but there's another problem with the letter: the cake. Peach had said she baked a cake for us, yet the cake is nowhere to be found in the castle. Even when we "rescue" Peach, she tells us that she's going to bake a cake for us, as in she hasn't even baked it yet. This confirms that at the very least, the cake is a lie. There was never any cake waiting for us at the castle. So why did she say there was? This brings me to the part where I tie it all together. Peach was bored and wanted some adventure, so she used the star power to transform into Bowser and bring all those worlds to life. Then, after visiting each one and giving some extra star power to the bosses, she wanted even more adventure. That's when she sent a letter to Mario promising cake if he comes to the castle. She lied to him to get him to come to the castle and play along with her game. She wanted another adventure so much that she deliberately set up a crisis for Mario to rescue her from. Peach played the whole thing off as if Bowser captured her when she was behind it all.
At least she followed through with the cake.

yes he can, matt didn't do much research into vintage helicopters. tail rotors only apply to helicopters that have their power running through a central shaft. if you place jets at the tips of rotor blades, as is the case with the hiller hornet of the 1950's, then a tail rotor is not required, they are called tip jets.
