    I totally had my receiver set wrong. Thanks for the video. I’ve had this yamaha for over a decade, and I never adjusted it correctly because I don’t have a clue about this tech stuff. After watching your video, it’s like having a brand new surround stereo system. This is incredible. Thanks

    Thanks Gene. I had used Extra Bass feature on my old Yamah RXV677 receiver.. But since your previous video relating to Pure Direct, my setup with two channel stereo with subwoofer now involves sending music via external DAC and Phono stage to analogue inputs on the receiver, turning on Pure Direct and connecting a REL T7x subwoofer via high level Neutrik Speakon interconnect cable (hence using my receiver as a power amp only in this setup).. Stereo music is sounding so pure to my ears!!

    Hi I received my RXA6A and set it up yesterday WOW. I first set the speaker system up manually, I set up my Golden Ears Triton 2+ floor standers to large and frequency cross over to 80Hz. But when I ran the YPAO, the system changed my speakers to small and changed the frequency to120 Hz? ? and yes I had my bass set up with extra bass which I have now turned off. So far very impressed, I have now removed my near new Cambridge CXA81 out of the system and will probably sell it. THOSE WHO SAY YOU CANT GET HIGH PERFORMANCE AUDIO OUT OF AN AVR NEED TO TAKE A SECOND LOOK. This receiver certainly satisfies my audio appetite.

    This was a great video and very informative. I know it's a bit older but just wanted to leave a quick note. I'm only running smaller bookshelves (B&W) on an older Yamaha receiver, but I found this info very interesting. I've had the speakers set to small and crossover set to 80hz for a while. Decided to give this a try and set the speakers to large with extra bass ON, wow, very noticeable difference. Definitely not full range capable speakers, but I really prefer the "fullness" of the sound like this. I also only have a single smaller SVS subwoofer so the extra bass up front really helps with blending the low frequencies into the sound stage. I'm not sure how graphs would measure this but I really like this sound, especially at mid to lower volumes. I also live in a condo so there's no reference levels happening here by any means, and this sounds great at my listening level. Thanks Gene.

    I have the Aventage Rxa 3050, when I set my mains to large I couldnt get hardly any bass out of my sub, so I changed to small then it worked well. But I also went into the setting and send all the low signal to the sub. ( 80hrz) So all my mains play highs, mids it sounds great. ( Klipsch rp 280s).
    Figured let the sub handle all low so mains focus on highs & mids on a 2way speaker. Setting the speakers took a time playing with tow in & so on, now great center imaging, I swear sometimes I get up to make sure my center speaker is off and it is but it sounds like it is playing. Wow,
    I havent found the boosted bass but hearing your video on it Im glad I didnt. Specially after seeing the graph you put up, what a mess in measuements. 😱

    You can access a web-interface in the receiver by typing the IP-address followed by /setup/. This is a really easy way to make changes on the fly without having to bother with the onscreen GUI. This works for a lot of Yamaha receivers. And no, no problem with the extra bass setting, got the hang of it way back when setting up a (then) brand new RX-V2600.

My previous Denon was pretty easy to set up with main+subwoofer, but the Yamaha setup doesn't clearly explain this and it was driving me crazy. Thanks Gene, I totally agree, Extra Bass was not necessary for my Topline Aventages (RX-A3080/3060/3050) since it led to a boomy bass. On the other hand, I have a specific case where it helps: I am driving an 2 way system (4 inch in closed cabinet) in my bathroom with the lower end RX-A660. Speakers are lacking of bass from about 130 Hz and lower and there is no place for a subwoofer. Thus I am using high pass for the small speakers, subwoofer 'on' (though there is no subwoofer connected, but you cannot set main speakers to large without subwoofer) and extra bass 'on'. This kind of compensates the lack of bass. Furthermore 4 inches are protected by a 40 Hz filter which acts like a kind of subsonic filter. Ok, it's not a real audiophile sond in my bathroom, but fun and a much more linear frequency curve than withour extra bass (I should check it with REW).
    Looking forward to seeing the results of RX-A6A measurements, especially about the Low Frequency Mode. I cannot believe what Phil Shea told aboout it: LFM just identifies problematic modes and consumers will have to correct it themselves with REW equipment and PEQ?? That's not user friendly and no fully automatic YPAO.
    Regards, Roland

    I have an Aventage rx-a760 receiver, and I had some time exploring this without really having any support, and I immediately noticed that the “large” speaker setting would have the sub off on anything other than using Atmos or surround in general.
    I wound up having to set my speakers to small (B&W CC6 center and DM601’s (for all other speakers) Despite the receiver picking them up as large speakers when I used the Yamaha YPAO.
    It was frustrating, but I finally realized in order to use my subs (2) M&K 75ii 12”s, I had to set them all to small. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Another issue I was running into was when I use the YPAO to optimize it, for some reason it always sets my sub to -10db and I don’t understand why. For right now I just have to manually turn it back up to 0 just so I can hear the subwoofer and the subwoofer can do subwoofer things. If not you can clearly hear its not doing anything.
    But this video did answer why my sub was on sometimes and wasn’t at other times. Thought my sub was going out.

    First time such a comprehensive and sensible explanation of Extra Bass feature. Thank you!
    Would you consider similarly detailed video on differences between current receivers lineup and the previous one? I have RX-V2085 and I love it, and I wonder what are the real changes in comparable capabilities in the new series of Yamaha receivers (skipping the exclusive HDMI 8k features, as honestly I'm not even interested in them).

    I assume looking at the full range in main speakers is what you want when using high line on a REL Subwoofer as you want the sub to receive the the signal the speakers won’t be able to reproduce?

    Great heads up Gene. I've set up my Yamaha for small on all channels, but cross over at 40 hz on mains ( Deftech ST-L towers), 60 for center, 80 hz for sorround and heighr channels. I dont feed LFE to the built in 10" subs in the Deftechs, just to my two SVS sb13. (crossover at 45 hz, with in room gain 31 hz). I have an additional 10" Deftech sub supercube that I feed LFE at 80 hz for two channel + sub. It works great. I love Yamaha have used them for over 20 years, far more musical and accurate than any Denon or Marantz. Thanks Gene

      Mm, Yamaha generally, has a sound signature that’s lighter in bass, but more emphasis on highs/treble.
      Denon and Marantz emphasize bass more than Yamaha, yet are still clear in the highs.
      It’s about sound preference of course.
      Yamaha has always sounded almost sibilant to me,
      and I prefer a warmer sound, with more muscular,
      more substantial and solid bass,
      so I prefer the Denon/Marantz sound signature.
      Build quality is very good in all 3.
      Cheers.

    I've been doing a sort of halfway house. I set my fronts to small, with crossover at 40Hz, which is about as low as the speakers go anyway. I seem to get better sound that way. They are driven through an active crossover though, which most people's speakers won't be I guess, and as a result they seem to do 40-80Hz better than my sub, perhaps because there are two of them!

    Interesting!! I have a Yamaha AVR RXA4A paired with front Klipsch Towers. I just enabled the Extra Bass along with another setting in the same menu for Clarity, and I found that when I turned the front speakers to LARGE, the speakers lost Bass and gained Highs. When I turned the same front speakers to SMALL, the extra Bass is heard and felt and the Highs are blended in very nice. I kept the front speakers as SMALL as I can definitely hear and feel the difference as opposed to setting them to LARGE. I tried this back and forth and even the Warden (Wife) approved. I like Big Bass and I cannot Lie!

      I am having the same results with my Klipsch Towers and my Yamaha RX-V479. Music sounds much better with towers set to small and Extra Bass turned on. It seems to tame the highs a bit to a level I enjoy and the bass sounds good to me. It's odd that people think this is wrong as Yamaha clearly states in their manual that Extra Bass offers enhanced low-frequency response even with small speakers.

    • @mcarr416ix
      @mcarr416ix Před rokem +1

      @@whoofman2013 nobody is saying it's "wrong", the video is just showing you what it does to the frequency response. If you like how it sounds with the speakers set to small and extra bass on, use it. Audiophiles like to target a specific frequency response but this isn't always the most appealing sound to everyone. Enjoy your speakers how they sound best to you.

    Very interesting video, A6A’s finally landed in Australia last week, so picked mine up on the weekend.
    Connected 9.2 speakers, Installed latest firmware and ran YPAO. It selected all my B&W 700 series speakers as large. Thought sound was disappointing .
    I then changed all my speakers to small, except front speakers, and put in crossover frequencies. Turned on extra bass. Sounds much better now.
    Do we know if latest firmware fixes that weird frequency response if fronts are selected as small?

    • @TurboGuy979
      @TurboGuy979 Před 2 lety +1

      If you’re setting your mains to large you’re negating the crossover, they are getting full bandwidth. Crossover is only engaged when set to small, i.e. you can’t set to large AND use crossover settings.

    Hi Gene. Can you explain what happens if you set the front left and rigt speakers to "large " but have crossover set to 80hz? What would be the logic/advantage of this configuration vs a setting of "small " with an 80hz crossover.

    • @matthewbir3180
      @matthewbir3180 Před 2 lety

      Setting front LR to large allows the speakers to receiver a full range frequency signal regardless of whether the drivers themselves can handle this. Ignore crossover at this point. When small configuration is selected along with an 80 hz crossover this will essentially route any signal below this mark to the subwoofer (ie. 50 hz). Bass frequencies are more difficult to drive and demand more from the amplifier/power supply. So part of the logic would entail that your receiver will run cooler or more efficiently as less is demanded of it.

    Hello!!! Just one question... I have a pair of main Goldenear Triton which comes each one with powered amplified subwoofers 1,600 watts with lfe inputs built in. This model manuals is very clear that you set them up as Large speakers and the option of connecting LFE cable from sub preout on avr to the internal lfe input on the main speakers. How do I get LFE signal to calibrate and align lfe responses if manual is already telling me to setup mains as Large speakers? Or what setup you recommend for this type of speakers? Thanks.... The only way I can think of is turning on the option on AVR that says LFE+Mains. 🤔🤔 I also have 2 extra on each side of room Goldenear Super Subs XXL and love the integration of all 4 powered subwoofers all together

    Does the RX-V6A / TSR-700 also have this issue with the speakers set to small and extra bass enabled? I’m curious because I love my 5.1.2 setup and it sounds amazing in movies and atmos music but as soon as the next song plays in stereo it’s a complete let down that only my front channels play and not my subwoofers. My speakers are all set to small and I was hoping to kick some audio down to the subwoofer during 2ch playback

  • @craigweidenheimer9441
    @craigweidenheimer9441 Před 11 měsíci

    Nailed it! So odd that they have the small/large speaker conflict; and why use the term "extra bass" when what you are looking to do is engage the Sub in stereo? I would think most setups would want the sub engaged regardless of speaker size and source. If you have an imbalance in an exceptional case you can always turn the sub off at worst.
