  • I have been waiting for this film to come out for so long and it is finally here! #Churuli directed by #LijoJosePellissary is a trip of its own and it is available on #SonyLIV . I tried my best to keep the first half of the video a spoiler free review as this movie deserves some explanation for those struggling. Probably his most unique film, I hope you like the Churuli Movie Review & Analysis.

@UCYablAguYYRyetSjoQfyxFA Omg! I knew somebody is going to say something like "why do you need their approval"?. The point is not about approval but the recognition that their hardwork deserves. They have always made fun of Indian films (Mostly Bollywood) because of well...it's Bollywood so it's time that India shows what kind of movies are being produced here. This has nothing to do with their approval or anything my friend.

@@sujalbageriya2619 The whole point is the difference between "recognition" and "approval". A lot of fellow Indians seek the latter. They are not as much concerned with the artistic accomplishment and creative achievements of a country's cinema as they are about what a bunch of foreigners would think about it. We must firstly enhance our merits, work on our flaws and keep up on the path of the same artistic accomplishment and excellence. Giving praise and criticism, both of the incentivizing kind. That would be the respect our artistes across industries deserve. That would be true recognition. International recognition would follow organically. You shouldn't pine for it. Firstly, it is far more imperative informing and making fellow Indians aware of the rich content across linguistic barriers and beyond Bollywood, rather than impressing foreigners.

you gave an idea. Those alien look-like 'things' could be the next two policemen who entered the forest after Jose and Vinay and could be on the way to the toddy shop. They look like aliens to Vinay because they are part of the next loop while we are currently with Jose and Vinay. So probably in next loop if we are with the next two policemen (currently alien forms) they will too see the 3rd next loop of alien look-like 'things' while Jose maybe loitering in the forest while Vinay is the fugitive.
The next two policemen to enter the loop could be Biju Menon and Prithiviraj ( my autocorrect wants me to change Prithiviraj to Antiviral)

Got to see the film when it was premiered at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) and there are few small differences comparing to how it is now being shown. In the festival cut instead of the swear words, they used a gibberish type of accent and that was called as 'churuli bhasha' and it was told in the beginning that the film will have a lot of churuli bhasha in it. Also, instead of the moon, it is shown that they are going inside a hypnotic wheel. There are also inserts of Vinay and Chemban looking into the mirror with the light like thing on their face, just like how they saw in the forest. The version that's available on SonyLIV is having few small additions and small Vfx changes. But the storytelling remains the same.
You may love this film or hate this film, but cannot deny the fact that it is an amazing attempt done from Lijo's end.

I'm in the category of people that love this movie Churuli. The things which made me love churuli is because of the setup, the screenplay, the cinematography, background score, sound design and the performances all coming on point in this film. Many theories can be interpreted but definitely Churuli is Lijo jose pellisery's most ambitious yet brilliant film in the Lijo verse films. The story by Vinoy Thomas is brilliant but you have to be brilliant in your vision to bring this on camera to life. If you clearly notice in the film, the older man who controls the village as you said, in a scene Vinay fort goes to his home and peeps through a wall to see a time machine kind of a thing. After that, you'll see many behavioural changes in Vinay fort's character. The criminal that they were searching were accused of killing wild animals and abuse against a child in which Vinay fort does these wrongdoings in the latter half of the film. The climax was literally beautiful although it's bizarre. Lijo literally gives a Nolanesque film. Lijo pairs up with actor Mammootty for the next film. Absolutely love churuli. I know Malayalam and tamil, the cuss words that were used is a bit of an exaggeration but quite enjoyed the film. Maybe Lijo needed those for the narrative perspective. And it's also justified as the place Churuli itself felt eerie and haunting. I loved all the three of his trilogy films ee.ma.yau, Jallikattu and Churuli. Awaiting his movie with Mammootty sir. Churuli is one of the most interesting and complexly brilliant sci fi films in the world for me because they've used the known loop concept and adapted it brilliantly for the Malayalam setup. Kudos to Lijo and team.

I have a totally different approach to the movie . Churali is the 'purgatory'- the place for final purification before ascension and after death. The two policeman represent Body(Vinod) and Soul ( Vinay). The body has all the vices like smoking drinking and is happy with churuli for their is no restriction of laws pertaining to a civil society. This proves that the body is weak but it can be cured by an external agent like how Vinod's ailment is cured by the lady. The body is incapable of any enlightenment or redemption on its own, it needs the soul for that .In the physical form the body also pays for the sins of the soul ( How Vinod pays the lady for Vinay's sins). The soul on the other hand is capable of experiencing things that cannot be explained( It's Vinay who sees the time machine and the light orb) .It is the soul that has the free will to question ones decision and chose its path and for that matter can be redeemed or doomed. It's the soul that remains the same but the body changes ( hence people remember Vinay but not Vinod).Churuli is the place for the soul ( Vinay) to uphold the sins in them .In the end it becomes clear that Joy ( the culprit ) they are looking for is Vinay himself.Churuli is a place for self realisation of the soul, to finally accept once sins and to repent .When that happens you are ready for ascension ( the last scene) .If that does not happen the soul is sent back again but in a different body (rebirth) and the cycle continues

The spiral form which is visible at certain moments of the film is a representation of the whole narrative structure of the story. The film starts with a folk story voice-over and also it ends by denoting the same folk story. Which is why it felt as the nucleus of the whole film to me. The folk story is presented as a warning for us to be aware of the supernatural being called "maadan" who tricks a thirumeni by disguising into an ant-eater(eenampechi) to travel with him and get lost in a maze like forest. While in reality two cops are on a journey to catch a wanted criminal named joy who lives in churuli. The story of the film and the folk story is precisely intervened together in way that even audience us is tricked by the maadan. Lijo has placed a short sequence to denote that the maadan has joined you in the journey even before the journey started (when shaji can stares at something which is left unexplained) , which can be realised when we get to the climax. Just like the maadan in folks story. Thirumeni (monk) in the folk is parallel to the police in the reality(vinay &chemban) who is from the outside world and are hierarchically superior to the maadan and his parallels the criminals who are the insiders. As we could see how the superior outsiders loose their strength and path when they are in the kingdom of the insiders . The abusive dialect of the characters shows how bizzare and lawless churuli is.
To be clear the charector of vinay fort is the pawn of maadan(ant-eater) who lures chemban (thirumeni) vinod into the nucleus. The flickering memories/visuals vinay gets once in a while in the movie is him getting the glimpse of maadan's memmory who is litrally inside his head or who is controlling him from the beggning of the movie itself. Also the sudden familiarity about the forest, sudden nack of interaction with the locals, sudden abusive dialect of pure hearted shajivan(vinay), revenge by murdering a local guy are the clues for the fact that maadan has took over shajivan's(vinay) mind. Also the crimes commited by the accused joy who is a representation of maadan is repeated through shajivan(vinay) which are child molestation, illegal hunting and murder. The climax of the movie has left a space for multiple interpretations with the sci-fi and supernatural events happening. Coming to the making side of the film the direction and cinematography stands with its excellence while the sound and art direction stands down in a good way that audience are not given then chance to notice it which help the film to create whole new world of swirl and suck the audience into it.
    Kiran.

Never feels like that they have just been placed, just for the sake of someone being there. Even if they do not have a single dialogue to say. Churuli implies a mystery that is locked within a spiral scroll. The real outsiders are us, the viewers who have been mislead by the movie, whichitself is the maadan. Once we watch the movie we have entered into the loop ourselves. The various plot lines are just meant to keep us swirling in its mystery. It's an open ended loop with endless outcomes which all began with us sitting in the backseat of the two protagonists in the initial sequence.
The characters have seen vinay before and the old lady speaks of him in the past tense as it has all been watched before by us, the viewers. The moon that is shown in the climax and the lone individual who we see in the last animation is the representation of us, the viewer.

    MY TAKE ON THIS MASTERPIECE!!!
Entire churuli is a portal, not real. Once entered it's a loop. There is no getting out but only resetting the roles. Everytime a loop is concluded the memory of entire Churuli natives are refreshed too. That is the reasons they having so many names. Madan is nothing but aliens. Madan is no a single entity but a group which facilitate Churuli program for unknown reasons.
    Loops.
In the movie there is clear references of two previous loops through various seemingly unimportant conversations.
Loop 1 - Soubin, a police officer is brought to Churuli by a maadan called vasu. Soubin goes through same things chemban vinod does and his back is also displaced. The maadan who brought soubin takes him to pengal and fix his back, in the process she also installs maadan into soubin. While the maadan comes with soubin rapes the kid. Then they eventually finds the criminal which they were looking in the first place and goes off and enters portal. Here the vasu and the criminal switch role. And enters loop 2.
Loop 2 - now soubin brings George (vinay fort) looking for a criminal called vasu. Bec the role criminal is switched after the loop reset - maadan who was a police officer, vasu is criminal now. Then eventually vinay fort will break his back and soubin will take him to pengal, where they will fix the hip and soubin rapes the kid. And when the loop is reset, police officer Soubin switches the role to criminal. And vinay fort will have to bring another person to Churuli.
Loop 3 - entire Churuli movie. In the climax vinay fort and Soubin will change seats in jeep, indicating the role switch. Saajeevan will become criminal and joy will be freed from the loop.
Loop 4 - chemban will go out and bring someone new to find the criminal Saajeevan (vinay fort). And this entire thing will repeat. And loop will be resetted with switching chembans role to criminal, freeing vinay fort.
    Clues:
    Major:
Saajeevan is called George by the arrack shop owner and he attends to call. This is an anomaly in resetting memory.
    .
Some memories doesn't get reset. This is indicated by few incidents like ammachi is trying to attcak him Saajeevan with an axe and people calling eachother diffrent names. Multiple times vinay fort is referenced to being a familiar face.
    .
About previous loops the hints are there in the conversation between arrack shop owner and Saajeevan after collecting tapioca from fearsome oldmans house.
    .
Blinking eyes, blinking eyes by the ammachi who tried to hack Saajeevan with axe is a clue to Saajeevan to use it. He tries it later and use the power to kill the guy who was rude to him.
    .
The alien references can be found in hoardings and at the begining of the movie after they have breakfast and two people talking about alien abduction in America.
    .
Vinay fort remembers pengals roof view when he is getting slapped in the competition. And pengal asked him if he was there before.
    .
Another direct reference to loop is from pengal. She is seen calling the kid 'omanakuttaa' when they arrive. When they are leaving loop neeeds to be reset and it needs a new kid. And she's seen Calling "Manu" looking afar.
    .
Pengal knows about the loop and she's probably in control. Bec she knows chemban is a police officer and other details. She also offers to predict "future" which chemban refuses.
    Minor clues
After breakfast when Vinay fort is washing his hands he realises something, probably a dejavu or something.
    .
Vinay fort turns and stares and the two people talking about aliens.
    .
Vinay fort telling chemban that he is having difficulty in tracking days while they were taking water from the well.
    .
When Vinay fort is walking alone in the forest the whole view is liquified or fluid. Indicating entire Churuli is a big artificial realm.
    .
The entry to portal is probably when the jeep goes faster in the begining and jerk is felt.
    .
Blinking eyes is a switch of control to maadan. Normally the peoples action is controlled by themselves but when madan takes over they act like robots with no pain and emotion.
    .
In the end when the Churuli natives attacks chemban and Vinay everyone looks at chemban only, vinay is left out.

I was lucky enough to see this movie for iffk. And let me tell you the ott version misses out on one awesome scene. A sci-fi scene of Vinay Fort wearing that alien costume and entering a room filled with cogs and gear wheels, like the insides of a clock or time machine. We also see Jaffer Idukki's character there holding a timepiece like a timekeeper. The production design of that scene is just epic. The climax although similar was in my opinion better put together in the iffk version. I wish that version was released on OTT. The iffk version also had another aspect in that some of the characters talked in a peculiar ways. As if their dialogues were reversed in time. There was also a note at the beginning of the movie which mentioned a special language ChurulMozhi or Churulalam which is used by the inhabitants of Churuli. I hope they release an extended cut or deleted scenes seperately.

    Settings.
While the maadan Vasu rapes the kid.
Saajeevan will become criminal and joy ot Soubin will be freed from the loop.
Loop 4-chemban will go out and bring someone new to find the criminal Saajeevan (vinay fort). And this entire thing will repeat. And loop will be resetted with switching chembans role to criminal, freeing vinay fort.

The Short Story by Vinoy Thomas
KaligeMinnarile Kuttavalikal(the criminals of Kaligaaminar) is based on a true incident of a police officer called Jose Joseph& his subordinate on Wayanad/Kerala!! Lijo added a bit of Maadan stuff which is a part of Malayali Folklore +SciFi= Churuli (never ending Spiral)
For me its one of the best Malayalam movies of 2021 that I watched !!
the screenplay, dialogues, bgm, especially the combination scenes of Chemban &Jaffer Idukki, i laughed a lot !!!they really have a great chemistry, I think most people believes Shajeevan as maadan but not me :)) there are some minor detailing in the movie which I think maadan is actually Chemban !
the only negative that i found in this movie was with Vinay Forrt aka Shajeevan i think he is still stuck on his Kochi accent,:))

I don't know how many of you had noticed that the other passengers actually came to the jeep from somewhere around there just like waiting for Shajeevan and Antony to arrive. The jeep driver's conversation with Jaffer Idukki is possibly a hint to the trap that 'Churuli' later revealed.

Exactly. Also the world of churuli is very small. And no shop other than the arrack shop. No agriculture; just references.
Like you said, the characters simply appear after the horn is pressed. Especially the driver. The loop begins there, in my opinion.
It's like a sample fictional virtual world. Like a video game or dream.

What really invested me into the movie is the technical brilliance portrayed by LJP and his team. The swear words only sounded natural and fits to the environment, and was never force fed.
