It wasn't water tinted with a digital effect, it was 50,000 gallons of stage blood pumped through a rain machine for example. The only thing CGI or digital effects were used for was to add in extra fire or to remove wires and equipment used to make the practical effects.
I actually just realized this myself: I saw it in the first ever audience test screening, in Orange, CA, with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell in the audience with me. Digital effects are *never* done when they do that phase of test screening, but what I saw was identical to the unrated version of the film.
Practical effects are generally cheaper than cg right? It surprises me that practical isn't used more often when it has the potential to look so much better.

I think the movie really works when you look at it as a commentary on addiction to heroin. She drives everyone away due to her addiction until she finally ods, hee brother is the only one to stick with her and she comes back stronger at the end, but is still broken.
Yeah, there's a scene where Ash is being dragged under the house, the camera is pointed up slightly and you can see the ceiling of the studio. I didn't notice it until it was pointed out.
Unfortunately being an addict, the decision to make her an addict kicking heroin was insanely horrifying in terms of how it set the tone. I wish I could explain in depth but it really worked into how dark everything turned. Experiencing that while being in the worst state imaginable is scary af.
Those withdrawals are what I imagine government torture programs attempt to do to enemy spies. Just get them hooked, let the withdrawals kick in, they'll tell you whatever they want for relief.

They were thinking of bringing the main character of this Evil Dead into the Ash vs Evil Dead tv series, but I believe that idea never reached fruition.
The remake and ash vs evil dead have super different tones. So I can kinda see why they didn’t go through with that. Wouldn’t have had a problem with personally though

Had to rewatch this review after seeing the trailer for the new one coming out. I still really enjoy 1-3 but 2013 was a different kind of horrifying to me. Still rewatch this flick from time to time. Hopefully the new film will live up to a worthy successor to such a banger franchise.

If you read from a book that’s wrapped in barbed wire and black polythene then you deserve everything that’s coming to you. At least with the original they listen to the recording which you could do and accidentally release the demon. If you find a book like that in a cabin in the woods you would never ever read from it

I liked the movie. I think some of the things people thought were supposed to be "super scary" were actually meant to be kind of silly, like the chainsaw scene at the end. Everyone in the theater was either squirming or laughing with excitement (there were lots of ED fans in there). I enjoyed it for what it was. I would be interested to see what their idea for a sequel would be.

I felt a massive horror fan connection when Jay pulled out those disintegrating Book of the Dead DVDs.
That thing fell apart so quick. Knew it would the first time I held it in my hands but I was still surprised how fast it deteriorated.

They didn't drop the withdrawal story line, the entire possession was an allegory for her addiction. It was actually pretty inspired storytelling.
