As goofy bonkers as he sounds, I still love when Dan Akroyd puts on his enthusiastic salesman voice when talking about paranormal stuff and UFOs, because it reminds me of the enthusiastic monologues he used to give as Elwood Blues to intro a Blues Brothers concert.

Man, Bill Murray always look super tired and bored even back in his prime, yet I can't help but to like the movies he is in, especially Ghostbusters. His character is this movie is pretty much 100% him so that fits extremely well. lol
Holy shit that cut from old ghostbusters to new ghostbusters really shows how much they cranked up the saturation for that movie.
I like the sequel. I have a soft spot for it. Maybe because I saw it first, before the original one, and Vigo and Janosh with glowing eyes in the dark hall scared the shit out of me as a kid. And also kudos for the editing.

I totally agree. I didn't even think Ghostbusters II was so badly regarded but for me, well, maybe because as a kid I didn't pick up on the similarities between the two movies but it was mostly about the atmosphere. The Titanic docking at the harbor, the glowing eyes in the hallway, the gooey hands reaching out for Ray's feet in the river of slime, the various shots of Vigo with the river of slime in the background with his backstory that is very reminiscent of Rasputin's (stabbed, poisoned, hanged etc...). I love RLM and great editing, btw, but I think they are being WAY too harsh on this sequel. Plus I've had that chilling creepy soundtrack, like when Rey and Egon climb up out of the manhole cover and enraged by the goo has been stuck in my head for almost 30 years.

Considering the other stuff Aykroyd worked on, good or bad that guy was creative, he definitelly was not the one behind the "we must make GB1 again" idea.
Did they really make the first one again though? I mean they kinda did in Afterlife. In terms of the paranormal elements, the second one stands on it's own. People didn't like the presentation for being too much like the first, though I would disagree with that assessment.

Honestly Bill Murray sounds more like Peter Venkman in the game than in this movie. I honestly think that game is the second best thing to come out of Ghostbusters and the only one Bill Murray seemed excited for after the first. Seriously, it's such a good game.

I remember seeing this as a little kid in the cinema in 1989, and thinking how stupid it was that all the Ghostbusters were unemployed now, and no one in New York remembered that ghosts and a giant monster attacked the city.
I hate how movie producers always assume kids are stupid. I was 8 years old when this movie came out in cinemas, and I was already a huge fan of the first Ghostbusters movie (I had two older brothers so I got to see a lot of "inappropriate for kids" movies), and I pretty much had the same thoughts as Rich in this commentary. I had already determined the movie was stupid early on, but at the end when they got into the Statue of Liberty, my "this movie is dumb" turned into "I hate this movie". That was the last straw for me.
Do you realize how accurate this is to real life? It's incredibly accurate. Not the ghosts or anything but otherwise that's the way people and society is. If there were ghosts and this actually happened, it would be the same situation. 6 months later: "Ghosts, what ghosts? What have you done for us?". Or there would be some liabilities or lawsuits. They would go after the Ghostbusters for tax evasion or some shit. I mean seriously. This kind of thing is normal in the real world. Hey you caused a million dollars in damage but we don't care that you saved the city and everyone in it.

i thought Peter MacNicol (yannosh) was the best part of the movie. his weirdness and especially his interactions with bill murray's character were gold. and he pulled off that accent perfectly!

I'm not ashamed to say I love Ghostbusters 2. It may have pretty much the same plot as the first one, but the acting, effects, and comedy were spot on.

The ingredients are mostly good they just assembled them in the worst way possible. Some kind of slime that feeds off of negative and positive emotional energy and can cause supernatural effects in the real world, and it's under NYC, the most negative, awful city in the world. You have tons of things to do with that. What they chose to do, though, okay it wasn't bad, but it was just uncreative.
@@tim4330eah, I mean in the 80s every sequel was usually the first one......again, with exception of Back to the Future and Star Trek, etc. But is shocking how slavishly similar it is to the original to the point it felt like it would've been less work to do something different. I still like the movie, the horror aspects are more unsettling here than the original

Ghostbusters II is essentially The Real Ghostbusters: The Movie, a live action version of the cartoon.
It's weird how these kind of bizzare decisions get made. Batman: The Animated Series is it's own thing in terms of story, but visually they were forced to make characters like Catwoman and The Penguin match their Batman Returns movie designs, even though that makes no sense.
I guess as soon as they figure out "this franchise is for kids" executive make all sorts of dumb decisions just to sell toys. YAY!

I find it hilarious that he ended up in that piece of junk movie instead of a proper Ghostbusters 3 as a direct result of how unprofessional and difficult he was.
Those women ARE funny. Even funny people make terribly unfunny movies sometimes. The Ghostbusters reboot was also clearly directed at young children, so it's no surprise that it didn't appeal to adults. I couldn't stand the movie, but my young nieces and nephews all love it.

I've never had a problem with Ghostbusters 2. In fact there's numerous sequences that I actually enjoy a lot, like when they first go down in the abandoned subway system, which is great.
A lot of older critics who disliked GB1 found the humor better in the sequel.
Despite all the ridiculous shit, I love GB2.

Slimer should have been more in the second movie, he was only in that movie for like five or six seconds. but i love ghostbusters 2 for many reasons and it was the first ghostbusters movie i saw so Ghostbusters 2 was my first introduction to the characters so i didnt recognized the Famous Dislike of beeing it the First movie all over again since i never saw it before lol.
GB2 in a way is kinda like Robocop 2. They're not bad movies, but the originals were great so the sequels get unnecessary hate.

Absolutely! It has so many good jokes and one liners though not as memorable as the first it still is an enjoying experience and i remember more from this movie than the first one because i first seen this second movie. Ghostbusters 2 has my favorite set of both the movies, the Van Horne River of Slime set wich is still amazing to this day. The atmosphere wnd the lore (what is Van Horne Pneumatic Transit?! I know now but it was years later when youtube became a thing that ik know what the VanHorne Pneumatic was. The River of Slime setting looks a bit like tje NYC abandonded Hallway CitySation or what it's called with the architectural arches and Tile Working. Great movie.
First movie did got better climax with StayPuft though and had the bureacratic worm getting Karma when all the marshmellow dumped over him that was so satisfying. I love both movies and thankgod im not slone in saying that Ghostbusters 2 is also up there with the first movie. Haven't seen Afterlife though, im not sure if im going to like it and i def. Gonna never watch femininbusters so ghostbusters 1 and 2 are still mamy rewatched. When i get the chance i think i going to download ghostbusters video game wich is supposedly the third movie lol.

I dont get the hate for this movie. its not terrible. there is plenty enough fun stuff. they even say that in this commentary track. they like lots of little things about the movie, for me that is enough. its like a 6.5/10 AND the cartoon is WAY better. So many better and more interesting stories in the cartoon. the possessed suit episode, sam hain, the car factory gremlins, the new orleans ghost band, the people busters, the sand man, the boogie man, would have all made better movies than this.

Most people want sequels to be bigger, and ultimately better, than the first or previous film in a franchise. It's a hope and a dream shared by many film lovers - snob and casual. History has shown us that sequels that are actually 'better' are quite rare - and most sequels ultimately do (and will continue to) disappoint or fail to meet expectations.
But, I do agree that Ghostbusters II is not an outright horrible or meritless sequel. Underwhelming for sure and has some writing/logic issues that feel nonsensical or retreading of the first film, but still fine for kids and adults to enjoy overall. For a silly movie about ghosts and that has the Statue of Liberty getting up and walking around, it's aged better than expected.

I loved Ghostbusters II as a kid. The slime was a new idea and the painting was scary. I know retrospectively that it doesn't align with the first one in quality and some characters, but I did love the cartoon so like the slimer bit was expected by that point. I'm gonna go a bit off topic now to the point of my likes and dislikes.
I even liked 2016 the parade balloons bit reminded me of an episode of the cartoon. Afterlife is controversially the only one I haven't liked. But that comes down mostly to my strong dislike of how rebirth movies pay weird homage to their originals. In those terms 2016 was a satire of what I dislike and Afterlife was an embodiment of what I dislike.
Focusing back on Ghostbusters Peace-sign, they had the characters doing their thing and the repeated beats didn't bother me. Looking back I did think myself that the love interest was a bit of a repeat but overall it told a simple encounter with a new phenomena which looked great and was a lot of fun! So what if it didn't focus as much on the characters? How can we complain about that and complain about it being 'the same movie' in the same breath? It was a different movie with a different focus... Anyway this was meant to be a light agreement sorry lol :)

Love this movie. The scene where Viggo first eye lazered the sidekick scared me so bad (it was my first jump scare) I spent the rest of the movie with my ears covered but kept watching because I love ghostbusters so much.
The heads on pikes in the subway freaked me out back in '89. That's pretty hardcore when you're seven.

Yep, I don’t understand the hate. You could pick apart Ghostbusters 1 because they’re both very silly movies. The river of slime, the photos of Vigo developing and the Scalary brothers scenes genuinely scared me as a kid.

I fell out of my bed at four years old and fell right on top of that damn ghostbusters house, ended up chipping my collar bone and had to wear a back brace for like 4 months while it healed. Awesome dad though after i was able to take it off turned it into a cheap version of a proton pack for me for Halloween
I still have the firehouse - it's in my kid's room serving as a bedside table. I fell on it 2 months ago while replacing some curtain hooks.

The slime was a form of ectoplasm but it’s a psycho Magno Ætheric ectoplasm which is effected by certain psychokinetic forces including human emotional states. When significantly charged in one way or another it can animate inanimate objects, alter human emotional states and provide a source of concentrated psycho kinetic energy which can be used by ghosts to manifest. The Scaleri Brothers ghosts were likely always hanging around there but they didn’t previously have the power to manifest or manipulate physical objects. The slimes actual origin was explained in the video game that it was being generated by a Slor that was brought to our dimension by Ivo Shandor and his cult. Shandor was able to refine the slime into different kinds including the pink slime in GB2.
That all sounds terrible.

Mike and Rich had some awesome toys. All I had as a kid was a restraining order Rick Moranis sent me.
I know GB2 is nowhere near the movie GB1 is, but I still enjoy it for what it is instead of disliking it for everything it's not. I especially love the 1st act where they reintroduce the principle characters, showing what they've been up to since the end of the 1st movie. It's pretty corny, but it's still fun and it's also better than the 2 they've made since.

They can be funny, I've laughed at a lot of their SNL sketches and McKinnon's impressions are awesome it's just that the Ghostbusters re-boot was a terrible film that no comedian could have saved.

I would like to add that the actor playing Viggo also played one of the terrorists in Die Hard. He was one of the guys who set up the rocket launcher that was fired at the APC (if that’s what it’s called). You don’t even see him get killed lol.
He was a real piece of shit in real life too. Apparently he raped his stepmom, who later gave birth to a daughter -- who was raised as his sister. His stage name was William Hornburg.
Also, he was in The Mouth of Madness as the guy who says, "JOHNNY BOY!"

I feel like the proton pack beam is a little bit more powerful than a simple "ghost lasso" Isn't basically a nuclear laser beam? In the first movie they show it just blast normal shit apart. It being used as a weapon against Vigo makes sense.
I cracked up at 7:19 when Rich laughed and Sigourney was on screen laughing. It matches perfectly.
I love the movie as much as the original, but then again, i am not over analyzing everything. There is so much fun stuff in GBII.
i second that emotion, saw 1+2 back2back as a kid , it was pretty seamless and fun viewing, never noticed a drop of quality or anything
@@rharms_ I saw the first one first. I had it on my beta max, so watched it like 20 times before the second one hit theaters. I put on the second one more often than the first, because it funny as hell, Scolari scene, tunnel scene, Vigo was super scary, Janosz was such fun, Lady Liberty walking scene was amazing. I love it. I really think they are totally different, even if the story are basically the same, but thousands of movies have this story aswell, also Afterlife, and I love that one too.
I've watched this movie a million times never knew Winston was in the court room the whole time.

Needed to be midnight of new years to possess the baby, he also comes out of the painting because he almost completed the possession so his energy made him a physical form if even for a small amount of time. People didnt believe in ghosts idea followed on to peck saying it was an illusion and a 'lightshow ' etc. I was a kid and my imagination always filled the plot holes well. Loved both movies.
Yeah, I think some things can be more open ended for the audience to put together, rather than explicitly said out loud.
@@bubbythebear6891 exactly and considering in the first ghost busters tte subplot was them being shut down as the officials thought it was fake and that the nuclear ghost containment unit needed shutting down. It made sense that after there may have been a lawsuit after to say it was fake and cos of the destruction they werent allowed to be Ghostbusters anymore even if they knew they saved the city
Plus this pandemic has proven that a ton of the populace is just too stubborn to accept any data that challenges their worldview.

I saw it in New York while I was in the American Numismatic Society summer program for grad students together with one of my fellow students. Afterwards we both agreed that it was disappointing that the script writers hadn't studied Neoplatonic theurgy more.

Wow. I knew the second movie took a fair amount from the first one. But I didn't realize just how shot-for-shot it was!
If I had a time machine I'd go back to 89 and see how it was possible for the seemingly 100s of epic movies to compete with each other in one year

When I was a kid, I learned that the small tub of ectoplasm would dry out if I played with it. So, I wouldn't play with it. I had it to just keep in a tub. It was like something to be played with on special occasion. Like, "Hey I like this friend enough, I think I'll break out the ectoplasm."
That reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where Elaine has to decide if her dates are worth using a sponge

I usually have these playing in the background while I'm editing work related things and at 27:08 Dan Aykroyd sounded like Mike doing a Dan Aykroyd impression. I had to watch it again to be sure.

As much as I love these guys and the detail they go into, its strange they miss obvious things. The reason why Winston is not a defendant, because he wasn't with the rest of the guys while they were digging up 1st ave! It seems like they only hate on the 2nd one cuz they love the 1st one so much. Of course nothing'll match the 1st one, but as Rich said, its a kids movie. I loved it and still do! Id rather have this, then them trying something new and failing haha.
Also them talking about the "2" in the movie because IIRC, they weren't IN business at the time. Then after the courthouse thing, they re-opened their business and I supposed used to 2 to say they're back or something. I dunno, it just seems odd.
I've noticed that about Mike, Rich, and Jay. They have spent their whole lives (and apparently made a career out of) sitting around and talking about movies. And yet there are so many times they miss the most obvious things or they show that they don't understand how macguffins or plot devices work, or they simply didn't understand a scene or sequence of events that the movie spent a painful amount of time or resources to explain. I believe in their review of Ghostbusters 1984 Mike said it seemed really convenient that the Ghostbusters formed exactly at the time that a massive interdimensional rift was about to happen when Ghostbusters 1984 spent nearly the entire movie explaining that the formation of the Ghostbusters was directly dependent on the sudden spike of scientifically observable paranormal activity. You just have to shake your head sometimes with these guys and remember they are three drunks who don't know much about movies. If you don't believe that, watch Spacecop.
