    The trigger warning for food is pretty interesting, and I can understand the confusion. It's generally for those recovering from eating disorders, mainly bulimia, where even seeing food suddenly (especially sugary things like pancakes and desserts) can trigger the binging and purging urges. It's not very common and is generally used by people who are either in recovery themselves or have a lot of followers struggling with EDs.

      @CirqueDemonic Před rokem +677

      I'm not sure, but I think a lot of Muslims also blacklist posts with food during Ramadan, because seeing food pictures makes them more focused on their hunger and more likely to accidentally break their fast. I know it's mainly for people with EDs, but I thought I would add on that little tidbit, too. ^^

      Back in the tumblr days, I was mutuals with a girl who was recovering from an ed herself, and she asked for us to tag posts with food so she could filter it out. I didn't always remember, which makes me feel bad to this day. I wonder if she was able to recover and if she is okay now.
      But yeah, it's not a thing many people are familiar with, and it can be a bit jarring when you first see someone tagging or asking for it to be tagget, specially with how the i termet distorted the meaning of triggers...

    that "you don't care about your people as much as I do" happened to me. I mentioned that I was "spazzing out" over something and someone went off about how offensive it was towards people with epilepsy. Dude, I'm epileptic. Unfortunately even when I informed him of that (and remember I used it to refer to myself, not someone else) he just doubled down about how horrible I was. 🤦🏻

    • @teallineart8805
      @teallineart8805 Před rokem +5

      I totally get what you’re saying and it is valid. However, I think it’s important to recognize that you’re not the only epileptic person in the world. There are people with epilepsy that do find that stuff triggering. Even when it comes to referring to yourself, it still promotes a stigma. I had this friend who has autism and I have a brain injury. At one point during our conversation, he made a mistake in his thought process and referred to himself as 'a bit special.' He wasn't referring to me and I think he thought it would've made me laugh because we were in similar situations. However, all it did was remind me that if you make one logical mistake, you are likely to be automatically labeled as special. (R-worded, stupid, dumb, etc) And it's this type of stuff that has caused me to be very hypervigilant as to whether or not I say something illogical or ignorant out of fear of being labeled as such. It's especially difficult because stigma around brain injuries is very real. People are taught to see brain injuries as 'You're broken. Therefore your opinion is invalid.' Plus, using the whole 'I'm so and so' as a justification doesn't always work. I once read a comment where someone called someone else an R word. And they defended themself by saying that they're autistic and they're allowed to say it. That's like saying you're gay after saying something like, "All F words are going to Hell!" It just doesn't work especially since slurs that refer to disability are really hard to reclaim because there's such a strong stigma around them. When people here stuff like the R-word, they automatically think "Oh. That means stupid." And nobody wants to be associated with those kinds of labels. I'm not trying to be mean. I'm sure you feel very justified in referring to yourself as such. It’s just important to consider all aspects of something.

    • @acelibrarian
      @acelibrarian Před rokem +24

      @@teallineart8805 I get that, and if the person I was talking to was also epileptic, I would have apologized and refrained from using it around him. As it was, he was an abled man dictating how I speak about my own disability.

I know language, slangs and uses of words change over time. I'm glad I saw your comment so I can be sure not to use this phrase.
      I often make lighthearted jokes about my disabilities and limitations. Like you, I only reference to myself, not anyone else. Also I'm careful on what I say around around people I don't know well or I'm not comfortable with. I can't imagine someone being offended of what I said, on my behalf...

    To clarify about the NyQuil chicken thing; no one was actually doing that to consume it (at least not to my knowledge) it started as a satire joke post from years ago that suddenly resurfaced recently and people started making satire posts in reference to it. Chubbyemu made a great video breaking down why the act of cooking NyQuil in chicken alone can be very toxic as it gives off a noxious vapor of sorts if I remember correctly. The media blew it up way bigger than it was similarly to the whole tide pods situation, which only made more people aware of it and more likely someone would actually attempt it outside of the sake of a joke

    For the food thing, the trigger warning helps some people with EDs (eating disorders) that may feel unconfortable seeing pictures of food. Those people then can skip the post and not further the trigger, or if they have the words muted the post wont even appear.

    Add to that, that I'm Asexual and Agender, so I have no interest in the act that make children while I get hit with body dysphoria just thinking about pregnancy.
    I usually say "I hate kids" when people ask why I'm not a parent yet or tell me what a great "mother" they think I'd be. But the truth is, that children unnerve me and I really hate that just because my body is female I'm expected to love and want children to the degree where people try to force me into parenthood.

Age does not necessarily determine what someone's mental state could be, so never discount anything they say about their mental health as "being a moody teenager"

    the pb&j tweet is relatable, reminded me of the time 2 ladies I was checking out from a medical store/convenience store. They started the convo like " We don't mean to be rude, but we find the fact that the feminine hygiene aisle is facing the baby products aisle, it feels like its attacking us personally." In the back of my head: "oh here we go...what else they gonna say.." but yeah they technically complained that its insulting them because they're women who can't conceive. I ended up like listening to their complaint for about 20 minutes. Like they legit think that I, a cashier have the capability to take this up to 'corporate' and change the planogram of the products the company spent years designing to be customer-friendly for the 2 to 'feel more comfortable' shopping in a convenience store. *facepalm*

      @crypt8355 Před rokem +5

      @@fatherless230 anything related to food or nutritional practices could be triggering but generally it just depends on the person. For instance I had to stay away from exercise for almost 2 years because I worried I would over-exercise and restart the cycle I had just left. But its important to keep in mind that eds are at the end of the day, still mental illnesses. So getting better is incredibly difficult. Eds are often used as coping mechanisms for some other issue (body issues, gender dysphoria, or just a chaotic life) so getting professional help and support from close people is very important.
