My mother used to watch her show religiously. She, like many others thought she was a great and kind lady who had a heart of gold. The funny thing was, I knew of all these allegations based on Reddit threads / Twitter, but never hard the heart to tell my mom. My mother passed away before all of this came to general light, and I'm glad she never got the see the downfall of a personal hero of hers.

About 6 years ago when I was in Spain, I met a Writer who use to work on her show. She said that Ellen was horrible to work for and that she was nothing like the person she was on TV. She said Ellen use to make other staff cry and treated them like her slaves. She said that nobody could say anything because they all sign contracts that didnt allow them to. This writer retired to Spain so she told me everything. I was really shocked on the other things she told me. She said that a staff member had a disabled child who turned 12 and wanted to meet Ellen. Ellen said NO and got upset that she even asked her.

That’s wild. Couldn’t even meet for five mins or just bring them on at the end of the show for a minute. Hard to believe being one way when the cameras were recording and differently every other time and I guess thinking it would never come out.

I always felt like it was her political position. She was one of the first TV celebs to come out of the closet back in the 90s and her status as a gay icon really seemed to help her career. I always felt like she kind of weaponized that since many in Hollywood would be afraid of pissing her off for fear of being labeled as homophobic since she was kind of a pioneer. It also helped that she was a staunch Democrat and a liberal icon, something that's big in Hollywood. It's like being a conservative icon in the Bible Belt: people will overlook a lot either out of respect or out of fear of you and what your supporters could do if you disrespect the icon.
I don’t get why those A-list celebrities needed to appear on her show? I’m sure they knew what type of person she is.

Celebrities are often entitled and spoiled, they dont really care if another celebrity abuses "the help" or the crews since to them it's the stars that are the most important. The crew and others are expected to meet any expectations and tolerate any abuse.
Ellen was also a liberal icon for quiet awhile. Since she was vocally liberal and came out as gay at a time when even many movie stars and actors were afraid to come out of the closet which made her both a famous liberal icon and a gay icon. Since Hollywood and the entertainment industry are so staunchly liberal and since people will often conflate legitimate criticism or personal dislike with an attack on a group that person belongs to (such as hating a gay person for their actions but conflating that with homophobia) it could be dangerous for someone to get invited onto the show and refusing to appear. Fans of the show might accuse the guest of homophobia and both fans and those in Hollywood may also view it as an opposition to liberalism, and criticism of Ellen could be viewed the same.
Those 2 factors mean that celebrities are less likely to care how Ellen treated people and even if they did they were both heavily incentivized to ignore their opinions and heavily de-incentivized to voice their opinions/criticism. Unfortunately too many people are into identity politics and will take criticism, dislike, or attacks on an individual as an attack on a group and I think that protected her for a long time in addition to executives, studios, etc. protecting her since she had a successful show.

I think the latter. She had a rather harsh upbringing and was bullied and abused, with situations like that when someone becomes an adult and especially if they gain a position of power they tend to go to one of two extremes: either 1. they do all they can to help people that are in the position they were once in, opposing bullies and abusers and try to stand up for the bullied and abused, or 2. they use their new position to become the abuser either out of a sense of entitlement (it's only fair I get to bully since I was bullied), a sick sense of justice (they deserve to be bullied if they cant stand up for themselves), or pure ego (I enjoy being the bully for once).
I think she's already a jerk from the beginning.
I always thought that something was wrong with Ellen when I watched her supposed funny game show. She was gleeful when watching those contestants fall through the floor and drop i don't know how many feet. She didn't seem concerned if they were hurt or not. Very disturbing.

I never watched her talk show. I thought she was pushy and rude to her guests and her audience. Her sense of humor was a little too very mean for me. And she liked humiliating, not just embarrassing them. J³❤ then the constant convincing that she was an animal lover. Knowing what a redeeming quality/concept it is to be an animal lover. ??? She is too much. Tries too hard and she looks mean in the face. You can't hide ugliness that comes from the inside out. She oozed meanness. My MIL and SIL loved her and they were both very mean people!

I always thought it was a pretty slick trick to get to take credit for giving away all the gifts and money and cost you very little. I know shutterstock probably got a lot of business from giving away those things (ellen did always say "from our friends from shutterstock or whoever that gave it, at least once) but when it would be brought up how generous she was, she never corrected it either. You could also tell how sadistic she was by the games she hac on her show and how she enjoyed torturing them when they lost.

I've been hearing a lot of things about her lately and how she treats people. I was never really into her show but she is definitely portrayed as the nicest person ever.
Can't remember when I started hearing about "the real Ellen", but it was shocking. I'd never heard anything negative about her when she was a comic and on that sitcom of hers.

For years I absolutely loved Ellen, but there is nothing worse than being totally duped. I can barely look at her now.
There's a whole lotta duping going on when it involves the rich and famous. Putting people on a Pedestal generally goes to the Head, then migrates to their Ass. As far as I'm concerned none are better than anyone else. We all die. Some, not soon enough.

The first time I wondered what Ellen was really like was when she was fired from the sitcom "Mad about You" where she played the lead couples nanny. The story was that she was giving acting notes to other more established characters on the long running program. She was mocked for thinking that having stared in a cancelled sitcom she should be giving pointers to actors in a successful one.
It just makes me think that she can't help herself, that she has a need to be in control, the most important person in the room.
Not saying this isn't true but she was not fired from that show, she did a one-off celebrity guest spot which is very common in sitcoms.

Well duh!! I watched part of the first season of Ellen and I knew she was putting on an act of kindness. What I found disturbing the most was the audience screaming and cheering for her like she was a Beatle. In my mind I was thinking, these people are so stupid and Ellen is playing them. I worked with someone extremely insecure and toxic just like Ellen at the police academy. Unfortunately the supervisors were all cowards to did nothing about it. They all just looked the other way and let her continue with her behavior for over a decade until she retired.

I get the creeps just looking at Ellen and then when she starts dancing I literally wanna barf!!! That women freaked me out from day one.
Ellen had a way of being mean while acting cute. She was really good at it, but it finally became unpopular. Ironically, even though inmates are a frequent butt of her jokes, I’ve met some incredibly unsocial people, formerly and hopefully currently incarcerated, that religiously watch her show. They *love* her.
She was mean to the workers. They weren’t allowed to talk to her nor look at her. The show runners would run into the green room and plead with guests to avoid certain topics. Adam Corolla would talk about this.
I always thought she was as fake as they come. It was obvious during her shows: the way she spoke to guests, her eyes without any compassion when hearing sad stories. When she laughed, she never did it WITH the guest, she did it AT them.

I used to love watching Ellen -- her stand-up, her show. I stopped watching when she was overstepping her boundaries toward guests/audience/etc. I don't think she was always like this. Life happens sometimes, and that industry just macerates your soul. All the dark/negative in more recent years do not negate--for me anyway--that she did positively impact millions of lives. She lifted me out of some hard times and I will always be grateful to her. I hope for her much healing.

Like alot of other people's mothers in this comment section, my mother watched Ellen like a madwoman aswell lol. I remember being just about 10 or 11 years old when Ellen first aired and it was so f*cking popular here in Canada (in the states obviously too). I'd always hear how great she was and what not. I'd watch the show with my mom sometimes aswell and it was enjoyable enough to see her gift all these people with these nice things etc. It's crazy to think this is what happened to her. I could understand being constantly relied upon to meet hollywood deadlines and people non stop bickering you for things could get old after years and years, but still; she turned into a classic evil Hollywood celeb.
