I still have no idea what "baguette" means. This video was super unhelpful. 10/10 😎
It might be a reference to GTA: San Andreas. I know Notch does love that game. One of the magic spells in that game to get infinite health was "BAGUVIX". Then for Minecraft, I'm guessing the "VIX" part was too similar to Vex, a hostile mob that also has to do with magic, and so they scrapped that part of the spell and replaced it with something else, though I'm not entirely sure why it would be replaced with 'ette' specifically. Perhaps an Ette was a mob idea they wanted to implement but that ended up on the cutting room floor and never made it in the main game except for this trace mention in a weird encrypted word.
everyone's overthinking it. it's just a fancy spelling of "bag wet" because notch was thinking of the idea for the words while his bag was wet
Baguette is the French word for the bread you use for a sandwich (Subway). It also means "wand".
@@lexicornix7530 ma baguette longue est "wet"
@@lexicornix7530 wooosh
To your introduction, 'craft' can actually be used as a suffix, like 'witchcraft' meaning the "skill of witchery." "Minecraft" could be interpreted as the "skill of mining." I feel like this might actually be what the name means, since the name was keyed by a fan before crafting was even in the game.
Maybe the 'craft' part of that name inspired the game's creators to add the crafting element...
Maybe the real craft was the friends we made along the way.
@@mkks4559 I absolutely love the part where craftious said "it's craftin' time" and crafted all over the place
@@mkks4559 The real friends were the mines we crafted along the way.
That's exactly what I was thinking, I always thought it was something to the tune of Warcraft (WoW/fantasy) or Bushcraft (wilderness survival).
Never would’ve expected a K Klein video about minecraft
i like to keep you on your toes
neither lol
Ja taksama. : )
Now we need a LingoLizard video about Minecraft
Minecraft, the most widely known compound word in English, even foreigners do not intend to learn it.
(0:15) Isn't that called a "compound"? It's assumed it's from 'to mine' and 'to craft', but it could just as well be from 'a mine' and 'a craft' (a skill, a trade). The result is a noun, a proper noun, and therefore called a "compound noun" specifically, since it's a noun from a compound.
You could read it several ways, I think.
Noun + Noun = Noun: (1) Something produced by a mine or (2) from a mine, or (3) a mining tool;
Noun + Verb = Verb: (4) To create a mine.
Time to add it to the dictionary!
@@Gamesaucer Or read it another way.
Mine: (5) Explosive device, (6) setting up explosive devices.
Craft: (7) Doing something with what you gathered, (8) a skill you're honing.
@@Gamesaucer or we could see it as noun + verb that has been turned into a noun: minecraft, the craft of mines, analogous to the word witchcraft, but instead of witchery it's all about mining
Basketball is a game about baskets and balls. Minecraft is a game about mining and crafting. It's that simple!
@@InventorZahran not so simple.
is "mining" and "crafting" a verb or a noun?
i say "yes".
but the answer may be different for other people
That feel when the linguist forgets what a compound word is.
Kinda funny that Minecraft also has its very own cypher alphabet but you wouldn't know it. Technically it is in the game but you cannot find it via normal gameplay.
From the update notes for snapshot 21w37a:
"Added illageralt, rune-like font from Minecraft Dungeons (currently only usable via commands)"
So, yeah, it's originally from the spin-off game 'Minecraft Dungeons' (and was used in the teaser videos for the game). I guess they added it to the main Minecraft game so that it could be used by mapmakers and modmakers and such?
I always thought the words in Minecraft were nouns, not verbs, similar to spellcraft.
English likes using words as different parts of speech than they were originally without actually inflecting the word at all. Checking Wiktionary, both "mine" and "craft" seem to have been nouns before they become verbs.
Who knew you can learn about Doom lore about Minecraft.
scientists are still trying to figure out what the ancient egyptians meant with the combination of letters "baguette".

FINALLY A MINECRAFT VIDEO
we are one step closer to seeing those old minecraft videos >:)
the linguistics and conlanging communities are so intertwined in my head that I need to make an actual effort to not assume anyone who posts about linguistics on the internet is automatically into conlanging. This runs so deep in my brain and I don't really know why
I have to remind myself the same thing since I basically started conlanging and cyphering before I finished learning my native language.
All Conlangers are Linguistics nerds, but not all Linguistics nerds are Conlangers
Damn. I'm gonna have a really hard time making finding a translation for "baguette" when I translate this video into French.
"This block is used to get rid of Lapis Lazuli"
too real man
Great vid! It's crazy to listen to a native Swedish person pronounce Notch's real name 2:11
There was like a year long period we’re people (children) online would just call every single writing system that wasn’t Latin “Minecraft enchanting language”. Like especially Hebrew and Chinese for some reason.
at least that beats calling it "moonrunes" (which is what we used to call it when we didn't know which script it was and didn't want to accidentally call, say, hebrew "arabic" or other mistakes, so moonrune got catch-all'd.
Sounds like calling it Minecraft enchanting language is just an attempt to revive moonrunes that died under the length of its own name?
Next, a video on the linguistics of Villagers
A lot of nasal vowels, for sure.
Hmmm hm hmm hrmmm
You're correct that Xyzzy is from Colossal Cave Adventure and given that it's commonly used in video games as a cheat code this is probably why it's in minecraft.
However, as a math person it gave me whiplash back to introductory linear algebra because it's a mnemonic for remembering how to compute cross products. If a = b x c then a_x = b_y * c_z - b_z * c_y, and note that the subscripts spell xyzzy. For a_y and a_z you rotate the subscripts (x -> y -> z -> x). In fact there's a theory that this is where it came from in that video game, but Wikipedia says that the creator was unaware of it.

Finally talking about the weird character of the enchantment table and as a polylingual and it has always bothered me 😅
But great video ❤
Doomguy is a descendent of the guy from Wolfenstein? That's kinda amusing, and not too surprising.
*_Commander Keen!? WTF!?_* He's related to those guys!?
officially commander keen is the grandson of Blazkowicz. doomguy is either the son or grandson of commander keen (son I think, but the Wiki says grandson) i think it's pretty cool
@@kklein It's quite surprising! Nice to know.

I had always thought that it was all random characters, guess I was kinda right.
Love a video featuring my favorite classic video game character
Fantastic video. Short, funny, and informative
I would love to see a game implement humming/freeform sign (as in not an actual sign language) instead of a language or monogrammar alt language, just because it will result in everyone being very confused 😵💫, while understanding what is being said, while not understanding how they understand what is being said for weeks on end.
It’s nice to see that some people seem to have the same ADHD tangents about random scripts or language related things out there
But does it tell you anything about the enchantment
nope
@@kkleinsomeone needs to make a texture pack to do that
@@Dmanepic i think that would require a mod :/
@@Dmanepic You can just replace the enchantment alphabet with english in the game files. I did that once some 10 years ago but then realized it made no sense so i changed it back. I guess that was my first modding experience.
This video is a hard contender for best video I have seen this decade.
The protection 2 you get on your diamond chestplate at 1:02 translates to "destroy inside w"
i swear the way you tell us about sponsors makes me go "Ahhh you got me this time" while pointing at the screen
omg that's me at 4:11
Will say love the conlang critic reference at 3:38
youre getting too good at this
About 30% of this video is an ad (31,5% is post ad transition).
yes this is true, thus it is placed at the end
0:11 a sequence of mine and craft, just like the game
i have a glitch on my enchanting table the text isn't in some lines and dots its actually cipherd so while I was enchanting there was text like self curse free, cthulu block insi and something with fghtat I forgot what it was and then when I enchanted an item the text changed to 3 new ones
Didn't even realize this was a K Klein video just by the thumbnail!
Illumina was not on the list of channels I follow that I expected to see featured on here.
not the linguistics video i expected to see today
Gotta love that jan Misali reference
“Welcome to conlang critic where I roast your favorite conlang”
i was 20 years old when i saw a video that told me that smog is the combo of smoke and fog. i can't believe i didn't realise that-
It's a shame Minecraft couldn't have made its own cypher, and also base it on the Swedish ABCDEÉFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVXYZÅÄÖ alphabet, and have the strings generated actually mean something in Swedish.
This would land it between F and F- since it's using a different natlang with a different script.
Gonna get a tattoo in enchantment table so no one can make a tweet making fun of the mistranslation
What’s funny is that this script looks kinda like my conlang script completely by coincidence
Wildly underrated channel.
thanks 🙏🏻 appreciated :))
Would love to hear more about the conlang tier list
I think in older versions you didn't know about what "granted" enchantment you were getting, so the alphabet had some reason to be decoded?
But yeah, had a lot of fun decoding one of these substitution cyphers back in 2020/2021 from a certain webcomic...
2020, when you were presumably stuck, in your home, or am i thinking of the wrong thing
Got notified quickly this time
i never understood the "Hebrew looks like enchantment table language" saying. it might just be because I'm used to the Hebrew alphabet but I've never seen the similarities
I'd go as far as saying that I feel like hangul looks closer to enchantment script than Hebrew does
I think its because of the like..... squarish style it has ?? You know what i mean right like hebrew is very squarey
A crossover of my two favorite topics on youtube oh you legend k klein🤤🥰
i remember deciphering the enchantment table glyphs trying t figure out what the random words meant.
Ah yes, wolfenstein 3d clones, my favorite. Truly the most defining game released by ID. I really liked the video's more goofy topic than usual, but as a devout doom eternal fan I just couldn't let this go lmao. Love it, keep up the good work!
FINALLY
I like the Jan misali reference
"U" looks like he had a bad day...
1:32 You sound like you're trying to swallow a baguette whole xD
Yes! I knew I was in that stream for a reason lol
0:32 damn, so i live in minecraft
0:15 simple, it's a watercraft that is used to detect mines. Oh wait ...
Technically the doom marines name is very dependant on the timeline and era
Doom 3 is the doom marine, doom 1 and 2 is doomguy and doom 2016/eternal is the slayer or the doomslayer but they are basically all just code names in a comic he’s BJ blatzuits the third and in slither he flynn tagart where the code to get doom 2 in eternal comes from
I always thought of the name as being mine and the suffix -craft analog to "witchcraft"
bruh, why are you calling notch the creator of minecraft when everyone knows he stole the credit from hatsune miku
thank you for pointing out the antisemitism in the villager design though, i've seen it mentioned but only on tiny scales and never from someone with a following as large as yours. i'm not even jewish and it really bothers me.
It's obviously a portmanteau of Minehead witchcraft.
Lap-is laz-u-li(e)
this video felt like watching adhd in action
This is so unexpected.
Good music btw, spanish esc, reminds me of classical guitar from Switzerland.
Isn't doomguy named Flynn Taggart tho?
In the novels
0:11 isn't this a compound noun?
BANG!
Oh right, not everyone grew up obsessed with the commander keen games. Or even knows what they were...

Finally someone acknowledges the villagers lol
greedy big nosed merchants.. who does that remind me of?
Minecraft might be a post apocalyptic world, the only survivor are long nose people with golems and Jews are the "chosen people" what did Notch mean by this
I geniunely did not make that connection is there like any other instances of him being anti semetic because as much as notch sucks i feel like this mightve been an unfortunate coincidence
Hey! Linguistic Minecraft is my thing!
no comment I have seen has said anything about this and I know this is 4 months later, but what is the song played in the outro??? it is really bothering me that I can't figure it out!!! K Klein or someone with it, plz tell me!!!
Edit: I found it and It is from The Legend of Zelda if I'm correct.
that's just something i improvised myself, but it's similar to clock town from LoZ
I’ve learned this
Is portmanteau=compound word?
it's where you have a blend of words to form a new word. hence "bedroom" (or "minecraft") isn't a portmanteau, but "smog" or "motel" or "hangry" are.
I think it's more like a transliteration rather than a cipher.
i believe transliteration is a broader term, it *can* mean simply swapping characters but it can also be quite a bit more complex like with chinese.
minecraft isn't a sequence of words, its a single compound word.
Kenning?
