Everyone seems to have concluded that the ants liked the Coca-Cola because it has more sugar. Actually, it has less sugar. But it tastes sweeter than Pepsi when flat, because it has more salt. The ants preferred Pepsi at the start because it was less carbonated, making it sweeter.

And whats funny is that this makes sense outside of ants as well. Pepsi was made to be drinken cold and out of the fridge, while Coke was made to be drank warm and (likely) flat. The reason for this is that Coke was made before refrigerators were common household objects, and Pepsi was not.

There are a lot of factors that go into an ant’s choice of food.
    1. queen(Fertile or infertile)
    2.Amount of larvae
    3. Amount of ants
    4. Type of ant
    5. What they recognize as being “food”, because they won’t recognize every food as food by chemical compound alone.
    6. Seasonal choices vary for each species but generally they like stickier things because it just barely solidifies and makes the perfect consistency to carry a ton of sugar.
    6. Amount of food available or extractable.
    7. Higher mineral levels smell good to ants. So mineral level and chemical composition. Fats and sugars are easier to digest and hence more popular overall while not effective as a stored foodsource, if you can even carry droplets of melted candy.
    8. Position. Worker ants tend to prioritize other kinds of ants more than themselves or others in their role, since it’s their job to work for the good of the colony, they will choose foods that are easier to carry in large quantities. Whereas soldiers prioritize their own nutrients, and prefer to drink rather than eat for the sake of saving time from guarding the colony, rather than paying attention to how much they can carry they want quick sips of sugar and such, as I found.
    9. Environment. Stress, weather, difficult circumstances, or even queen’s pheromones based on her own needs.
    10. Where the pheromones are strongest and most recent.

(READ FULL COMMENT BEFORE YALL START BARKING IN COMMENTS). OLD COMMENT:(They like coca cola more (I THINK) because it has more sugar than Pepsi, therefore it's so addictive to drink that they'll even drink large quantities. I hope this information is helpful!). E. NEW COMMENT: Yes now unlike my last theory Pepsi might have more sugar than coke. It's still has something in it to make it more addictive.. and yes before probably coca cola had cocaine in it, but rn it has caffeine which is also in coffee and caffeine can make someone more alert and energetic as well as the fact that it’s in many other things, but that’s not all it could have and I myself don’t even know what these thing are but since the ants drink the coke faster than Pepsi then there has to be a substance or substance that’s so addictive to drink at a whole. EDIT: so I fixed my comment bc most of y’all are like using like a huge portion of u day to swarm me with negative comments and now that I fixed my comment YALL wouldn’t swarm me right? And also I PUT MY OLD COMMENT/THEORY IN ITS OWN SECTION SO DONT START COMPLAINING ABOUT IT

The ants might've also preferred the liquid with a lower surface tension that's easier to break through.

    • @MisterkeTube
      @MisterkeTube Před rokem

It's not about having enough force to break through the surface tension, but rather the fact that the surface will just move out of the way where the ant tries to apply its force because of the tension. Try pinching a sufficiently inflated and large balloon between two fingers. As you try to move your fingers in place the surface is pushed away by those fingers not leaving anything to pinch anymore. So, I agree that surface tension might play a role in an ant's decision to take on one or the other droplet.

They're designed to seek out sugar as an energy source. Carbonation doesn't really have any benefits for them so that makes sense that they go toward where they sense "more" sugar.

Exactly. One test could be a coin flip. They just randomly chose one side slightly more often. If you put two drops of the same drink next to each other one would be finished first. Meaningless if its not repeatable and predictable.
