    One gap in the Mountain Dew story is that Coca-Cola's _first_ answer to it was Mello Yello, in 1979. This is probably Coke's most successful answer to Mountain Dew, and is still available in a decent number of markets (mostly in the eastern part of the US). I'd still say that Mountain Dew was the clear winner in that particular competition though.

    Restaurants and fast food are part of the soda wars that has intense competition. Coke and Pepsi both seek to be exclusive vendors in those venues. My father was proud that his restaurant offered both. He mentioned that when the account managers would tell him "You really should carry only one", he'd respond "So, should I drop yours?" Not a offer that either took.

    I'm old enough to have "taken the Pepsi challenge" Did it twice. Once locally and once at the state fair. Both times the samples were a small sip from a Dixie cup, served warm (summer time so ~90oF liquid) and both colas were flat. Under those conditions, neither tasted like what you get from a cold, glass bottle. So not surprised the sweeter one won.

      Yeah Surge was super popular back when it came out. I knew it was discontinued but was kind of surprised just how fast. • @WARnTEA
      @WARnTEA Před 6 měsíci +4

      Its sad that parents got upset about them having higher caffeine. It was quite a funny time to live. Most sodas already had Caffeine, and Adults drank unholy amount of caffeine through coffee and yet they demonized caffeinated soft drinks. Basically all energy drinks were looked down upon by parents. Vault was probably killed because of that, and it prevented Coke or Pepsi from properly getting involved in that space allowing a lot of competition in the energy drink market where Coke and Pepsi eventually had to acquire their own energy drink brand, and less than 10 years later when parents failed to stop energy drinks, Pepsi created Mountain Dew Kickstart which is basically what Vault/Surge was.

    As for me, I stopped drinking soft drinks like ten or so years ago after finishing high-school, I realized they had too much sugar, though I occasionally drink sodas if I'm in party, or in a friend or relative's house, and honestly I think both Coke and Pepsi taste very different from what I remember, and as a kid I think I always preferred Pepsi

    Cherry Coke was the only one to actually win me over. I don't even like regular coke or pepsi, but something about cherry coke really did it for me. I weirdly liked Surge to boot. I was bummed it vanished. When they did Aha and Bubly, Shasta actually started selling some FANTASTIC unsweetened carbonated flavored waters. Their root beer was honestly great, and their Dr Shasta flavor tasted more like Dr Pepper than diet Doctor Pepper, and with no sweetener of any kind. The fact that they discontinued the lines was a true tragedy to me. The fact they did regular soda flavors instead of just fruit (like the big companies) and that they did it VERY WELL... it shocks me it didn't do well.

      I was always a Pepsi person, but my favorite drink is a Coke with Cherries in it. You can basically only get it at a bar or make it at home. They pour some of the cherry juice in with like 5 maraschino cherries. The bite of a coke just pairs really well with the sweetness of the cherries. Regular Cherry Coke can't really compare, but its better than Wild Cherry Pepsi (which is an abomination).

    You missed a couple, like Pepsi’s attempt at a low calorie soda in the late 70s/early 80s called “Pepsi Light.” It was flavored with a bit of lemon and had a slightly lower sugar content, I think. (Very old memories!) Also, doesn’t Coke own Mello-Yello? I always assumed that was their “citrus” entry. Surge was definitely an attempt to hit Mountain Dew hard, but it also felt like a way to strike back at Jolt Cola-which had twice the sugar and twice the caffeine (supposedly) of other sodas. In related news, I feel old. 😅

    Phenomenal video - I would love to see a future video on Mountain Dew specifically. I feel that brand is a perfect encapsulation of how beverage brands attempt to make variants. Many know the popular Code Red and Voltage flavors, but actually there are over 50 different variants under the Mountain Dew brand. And then PepsiCo uses different distribution strategies to distinguish the flavors. Some are only sold in different regions of the country (White Out), some are only sold different times of the year (VooDew, Holiday Brew, Gingerbread Snap’d, DewSA, Fruit Quake, Summer Freeze) and some are only sold at a particular store (Baja blast at Taco Bell, sweet lighting at KFC-both former PepsiCo Subsidiaries-Dark Berry Bash at Applebees, Thrashed apple at Kroger, uproar at food Lion, legend at BW3). Overall the variety seems to be good for all parties involved. Consumers get to enjoy a huge variety of sodas (or increasing the likelihood that one of their absolute favorite flavors will be sold), restaurants have flavors unique to their store (bringing customers in who might shop elsewhere), and PepsiCo can increase overall brand sales thru novelty while having an incentive for restaurants to carry Pepsi products over Coke

    • @DCAdamB
      @DCAdamB Před 7 měsíci +2

      Speaking of which, I would have loved to see a quick comparison between which restaurants carry Coke versus Pepsi. Almost all restaurants are exclusive to one or the other, so it is a good proxy for who is “winning” the cola wars. I believe most of the major restaurants are with Coke

    On thing that I’m surprised was not discussed in this video is fast food market share. Currently, as far as I know, the only places you can get Pepsi from in terms of fast food in the U.S. are from the chains owned by Pepsi (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell). It’s interesting to see this happen since it does operate as a form of advertising since people have to try your drink if it’s the only option.

      Coke is available at McDonalds, Hungry Jacks (Aussie version of Burger King), Subway, Guzman Y Gomez, Event Cinemas, Pizza Hut and Carl's Jr (among others).
