I have taught a media literacy class for years, and this last term every other day I had a student shout out “Food Theory did it!” When I brought up a fun little fact (shrinkflation, food labeling, oddvertising, & subway lawsuits, to name a few).
So well done. I’m now scouring your videos for new assignment ideas. Any recommendations? 😁

If you want serious suggestions, there's one on how McDonalds (among other fast food companies) makes more money from real estate than fast food

Does this media literacy class have anything overlapping with the concepts presented in Digital Rhetoric? Mostly outta curiosity.
This is how I felt when I tried researching if phones charge faster when powered off. Every article I could find said yes, but none actually tested it.
Spoiler, they’re wrong. Screen off but powered on is the fastest, powered off completely is SIGNIFICANTLY slower.
It depends on the charger type. If you are using a fast charger, then on It is. If it's on the PC/PS4 Port than off is faster, but insignificantly faster. Unless your phone died, then always leave It on
chasing woozles. Articles cite each other and no primary sources
So you tried this on one phone, right? I have tried it on dozens of models and they almost always charge faster when they are powered off.
Depending on the model🤔
14:35 that headline hits DIFFERENT now...
One big thing this really sheds light on is how common it is for the news - now and throughout history - to report on deals (and laws) that are still in progress as if they're set in stone. The "will" in those headlines is doing a LOT of work, and I recommend that if you ever see a headline with any type of future tense at all, treat it with a healthy level of skepticism. Especially these days, where some future tense is written as past tense, like articles titled "How X became the new owners of Y" where "became" is referring to something that MAY happen in the near future.
E
You mean like how Elon Musk was going to buy Twitter, but woke assassin's and death threats made him back out?
How they report on transfers for athletes really shows how lost they are for the real information. They report a player is "in talks" with 20 teams only for a team they didn't even mention to contract the athlete. It doesn't change much for much more important stuff than sports. Remember every time they predicted the outcome of an election? They did as much guess work as we do and got it roughly as right.
@Emerald Eyes Esoteric thats not at all true
You mean like all the coverage of "Climate Change"?
I got an idea for an episode; what’s classifies as a “mint”? We got basic mints like “evergreen” and such, but there’s also fruit and other flavors that aren’t exactly “minty. So what’s the limit?
I vote for this idea, pretty good

Im just starting to imagine pepsi and coke battleships fighting it out
I’m imagining Red Coke hiring 9 mercenaries and Blu Pepsi hiring 9 mercenaries to fight each other to see who is better.
The waiter in the opening bit wasn't remotely unusual. A lot of restaurants have exclusive contracts with one of the big brands. Personally, I don't drink Coke, so when I go to a place that only has Coke, they usually at least have Dr. Pepper, which I really like.
This one was really interesting, mostly because I hadn't even heard about this happening at all. This was totally new to me, so it was really fun :)
After watching this video, several things finally make sense to me.

Pepsi once had the 7th largest navy in the world once
@@BREAD_WRESTLING Except it apparently actually didn't according to the research on display here.
Mind you it almost happened but the soviets changed their mind so many times that by the time plans were being finalized the union collapsed which made the above impossible.
If it had happened it still wouldn't have been that large either.
something i find interesting about the pepsi navy story is the fact that a total of 23 soviet warships (including 17 submarines) were scrapped in the uk in 1989, coming out to 35,772 tons displacement
The deal wasn't signed until April 1990 though, so It had to be a coincidence

One small critique that doesn't really affect the rest of the video but I really wanted to say is that though measuring naval strength by tonnage is definitely more accurate than measuring by sheer number of ships, it is still far from the best way of comparing relative strength. In particular, how efficiently the weight is used can wildly affect the ship's tonnage without changing how effective the ship can be in actual situations. Merely basing the strength of ships by their weight can lead to misleading results and can get really complicated with how many factors influence the rankings.
All of this is irrelevant at the end of the day since (spoilers) it becomes a mute point later in the video, but also because MatPat stated that he just wanted to compare using a "more accurate" method, rather than the "most accurate".

Ah, such a classic, a multi-billionaire beverage company with a navy of 20 warships. This is probably the first video I've seen that actually goes against them having warships, or any ships at all. I guess the idea of a soda company with a ready-ish navy is more catchy.
I believe the "6th largest navy" claims were based on later distortions of the original claim, which was that the deal resulted in Pepsi holding the 7th largest submarine fleet.
I'm pretty sure that's just as terrifying
Cool that you're finally doing this! I first heard about this on a British TV show called QI, (short for Quite Interesting!) which is kinda a lot like this, debunking and proving things and telling you really interesting stuff. Nice to see that Matpat does better research than the BBC! It would be fun to see a "who is the best lemon lime soda" competition between Mtn. dew, Sierra Mist, Sprite, Seven Up, and i'm not sure if it qualifies because its grapefruit soda, but Squirt has a similar vibe in taste.
Also, I looked at the nutrition facts of both Pepsi and Coca-Cola side by side once and the only thing different was that Coca-Cola had more sodium and Pepsi had more sugar. I like Pepsi more, its sweet, and doesn't burn my mouth like Coca-Cola making me feel like my throat and mouth is dry. That said I try not to drink soda and when I do I usually go for Mtn. dew or or an Orange Crush. I guess i'm just fruity inside and out.
I still think that Kofola is better than Coca-cola and Pepsi

This is an odd thing I've seen called the Pepsi effect where people when blindfolded and drinking from pepsi and coke will prefer Pepsi but when they can see the can/bottle they will prefer coke
In my opinion Pepsi tastes slightly better, and Coca seems to have more fizz. Maybe people prefer that
Pepsi tastes like a better diet soda the thing is I hate diet soda. Coca Cola is by far better at taste and reputation. I did the same thing and I could instantly tell which ones which and chose coke
Usually those tests were done by Pepsi booths and where I lived when they ran those "tests" if you chose Pepsi they will give you a free bottle of Pepsi. So most people chose Pepsi to get the free drink. I think at the end of it it came out to something stupid like 80%+ preferred Pepsi. Also we weren't blindfolded but the little plastic cups were unlabelled.
@@HimmelWeint No, I did it independently for a school project and people choose pepsi about 70% of the time and they weren't getting anything free.
A professor at a university did this test to his students but added RC Cola. The RC won out every time. Don't know if its accurate since I heard it from a guy telling stories about his professor, but its something to think about. If we remove all branding from all colas, would people start drinking, I don't know, Sam's Cola? Blue Sky?
Didnt Pepsi make their product clear, so that it wouldnt be suspicious when it was inspected? And didnt Khrushchev have a secert vault of Pepsi?

May 2 1992, number fever, a show/Contest made by PepsiCo in the Philippines that ended up killing 5 people and left millions injured. This happened when Pepsi made a simple contest, you get a bottle cap that has the winning number on it and you go to get your 1 million, Pepsi made sure that there where only 2 winners every day (so kinda like the lottery )and they relied on a computer to do the numbers. But one day that computer malfunctioned and the number it chose was 349 which was already a number that was supposed to never win so that meant that there were a lot of bottle caps with this number on it, so you could imagine how many people there was going to Pepsico and getting mad at the situation when Pepsi found out and refused to pay them. The people started throwing bombs at all the Pepsi trucks they saw and they got a leader to sue Pepsi of 400 million dollars for 400 people but got less then what was asked for.
I’m sorry if I got some stuff wrong, you can google “number fever” and see more info on the situation for yourself
