Another factor (one that is a company secret.) is what’s the soda water to syrup ratio. Most restaurants just have a large bottle of soda water that the dispenser mixes with syrup to make the soda and the ratio can be adjusted.
McDonald's soda is watered down to basically flavored water.

This is why you either get the drink yourself (inside) or in some cases, ask for no ice. Whether the volumes are different, sometimes if you ask for no ice, if they're nice enough they'll fill it up to the top with just soda and you may be getting anextra 4-6 oz of sode as some will put excessive amounts of ice in the larger cups to make up for it. The advantage of in-door dining where you get it yourself though is you can refill as much as you want (at least in the US in many chains, I heard that in other countries, this is not allowed).
Actually, if you order it with no ice, it's company policy to fill the cup to the top. The restaurant doesn't want to deal with angry customers clogging up the drive thru complaining that the employees only filled their cups 3/4 full.
Before the drinks became so automated as they are at McDonald's now, we were always told to put half a scoop of ice in small cups, a full scoop in medium, and 2 scoops in large. You would then set the drink cup under the fountain and choose the button for the correct cup size, then the dispense button. To make up for any variable in the amount of ice (light ice or no ice requests), there was a "free flow" button the employee would hold down to finish filling the cup.
It was always supposed to be full enough that it would slosh against the lid without much shaking, but not so full that putting a straw in the lid made it leak out.
For the USA - McDonald’s should be updated now because the $1.00 was a “limited time” deal that they did for like 5 years. It sure was a long limited time!
come up to canada, $1 drinks at mcdonald's is always a summer-only thing, and they do the $1 ice cream cones at the same time.
Yeah but it makes sense as everything else has risen in price. They're still only $1.29 in NC, where he gets all this from
and in EU you have calibrated cups. If they sell you 0.5l there has to be 0.5l of drink inside, without ice. Also if you go on the McDonalds webside, in US you only have Large and the calories , in Germany f.e. you have Large 0.5l written as well.
Everyone: Refills their cup once
Matpat: Refills his cup once, drinks 1/10 of it, then refills again

yeah my guess is its quality control problem rather than company policy. A couple add too much ice and it skews the average.
In Germany, Restaurants have to fill up the amount of drink that’s written on the cup first, then add ice. It’s that simple ^^
That makes it difficult to not splash the soda though, and then you end up with sticky soda droplets (which will fly up to even the ceiling due to carbonation and probably some physics effect of rapid thermal change). It makes more sense to have a consistent ice scoop size and then deduct approximate amount for total soda value from a filling logistical standpoint. Either way, you're still getting a highly over-market priced drink.
I'm a little surprised the Germans wouldn't consider the mixing density of the soda (you might notice some places have stronger flavor than others, you can tweak the mix concentration), because that's probably more important than just how much ice because that's the difference of watered down vs still nice and strong even after some ice has melted. Technically I think that's suppose to be calibrated by the drink union supplier, but they either don't have a well calibrated tongue or don't have a standard test machine.

Ive always order my drinks from any restaurant with no ice and if i fill it myself as much as possible to maximize drink even at the speedway gas station where a XXL is less than 2$ where as a 20 oz is roughly 25 cent more, yet half the size of a XXL
2:13 I used to work as a shift manager at a pizzeria, and while we sold large fountain drinks for $1.99 back then, the actual food cost was a mere 10¢. This includes the cost for the paper goods - the single-color 32oz paper cup, plastic lid and straw, as well as the syrup, water, carbon dioxide, and ice.
Hence, we managers were given a LOT of leeway to offer drinks to guests on the house while they wait for their take-out orders. Even when someone showed up very early for their pizza, and even said "Sorry I'm here so early, I know I just called it in 5 minutes ago", we would still just practically hand them out free soda, because the now-increased potential for their return business was absolutely worth more to us than a 10¢ soda!
10¢ was our food cost for a single soda, and the majority of that cost actually goes into the paper goods. For comparison, a kid's drink comes in a small 12oz cup, but because it has quite a few different colors on it, it costs a lot more to produce. Therefore, the food cost of a kid's drink was actually 39¢! Which is also why when people asked for just a cup for water, and started instinctively reaching for the kid's cup, we stopped them and instead either offered them an 8oz plastic up, or a 32oz medium cup.
Also, for the reasons mentioned above, I absolutely do NOT respect places which do not offer free refills, especially ones which charge more than $2.50, even $3+ for a fountain drink. And even worse is when this happens at a sit-down restaurant which uses reusable cups, because there is NO paper goods cost other than the straw!
I'm curious, why would anyone choose to buy a $1 small when there's a $1 large at McDonalds?
[ btw. Wendy's fries are my favorites ]

never order a medium at Wendy’s unless u want a Home Depot bucket full
I would like to point out that if you want to avoid getting tricked by fast food restaurants and movie theaters, don't get the medium regardless. Companies like this want to price the medium and large sizes very close to each other making you think "Well the medium is almost as much as the large, I should just get the large since it's a better bang for your buck." I say if you want to not be tricked into getting a larger cup without spending more money, go with the small because with the rate that's going right now the "small" might actually be as big as a "large" in some places.
The reason this channel exists is so that at the end, we can say, "Wow, I never knew!" Keep up the good work!

@@trevor3233 he is wrong diet pepsi is the nectar of the gods.
When I worked at McDonald's back in the days when the employees filled the drinks, rather than it being self-serve, I noticed things when people asked for no ice. We had buttons to press based on the size, and it would put the correct amount into the cup. There was also a flow button to allow us to add whatever amount we needed.
When they asked for no ice, I noticed I had to use the flow button. I eventually decided to just press the button for the next size larger, and deal with whatever excess or shortfall by either dumping out a little bit or pressing the flow button. But when I used the next size larger, it went right up to the fill line marked on the inside of the cup (the slightly indented ring about half an inch from the top of the cup on the inside that most people don't notice.
Over time, I would try this with each size. The results were the same. In the age of people being asked if they want to supersize their meal, which would increase the drink size by one, I realized that if you leave out the ice, it's like a free upgrade in size. That matters less today if you only consume the drink in the restaurant (if you took it for here), since you can always go back for refills. But if you walk away with the drink, then no ice gets you that much more of a drink. A 16-oz cup holds all of the drink (minus ice) of the 21-oz drink. So a 21-oz drink appeared to get about 5 ounces of ice.
Most people don't realize that the water temperature is already a bit cold, and carbonation creates a chilling factor to make it even colder. It's not that necessary to add ice that takes up space that could be more of your favorite drink. If you plan to consume it in the first few minutes following ordering, then ice is completely unnecessary. If you plan to consume it half an hour or more later, where ice could keep your drink colder, in case you feel that's necessary, keep in mind it only keeps it cold by melting, which dilutes your drink. Again, it might make more sense to just get the drink with no ice and refrigerate it, if you have the option, or pour it into a cup that can keep the contents cold, since many people have such cups, nowadays.
When i worked at mcdonalds they said not to fill an order of a drink for no ice to the top, they have a button that measures the pop and you tell the customer wether they want ice or not policy is to give them the amount of soda the machine spits out. This wasnt universal as ive been to others where they would fill it to the top but that location did do that. A wendys i was at also did the same thing. You get about 2inches of empty space in the top of your cup with no ice.

How about a “theory” about why fountain soda, bottle soda and can soda all taste different.
Its because when you get soda its water that's been added to flavor syrup. different fountains use different amounts of syrup to water. Mcdonalds interestingly uses a lot of syrup to water for a better taste, so thats another reason to get a soda there aside from quantity.
But even bottled soda and canned soda has been made locally in a bottling plant in your area as its cheaper to ship the syrup and mix it with local water than it is to ship the whole soda. I don't know why bottled and canned soda would taste different however as aluminum cans actually contain a thin plastic lining so both sodas are being stored inside plastic.
They taste different because of a few different factors. 1. Most restaurants use as little syrup as possible to squeeze every cent they can. 2. The kind of container can dramatically affect the taste of the drink(i.e. paper, plastic, metal or glass).
3. Depending on the drink or where it is from, depends on whether it uses Aspartame, Sugar(or cane), or some other sweetener.
"Mexican Coke" as it is called in Nevada, is featured in only glass bottles and is ONLY sweetened with Cane Sugar. This means to some people it tastes better than the high fructose varieties(I definitely prefer Mexican Coke).
If you drink fountain soda from the straw then it's cause drinking liquid from a straw mask the taste.
Yes please
Also keep in mind a lot of these places have fluid lines that dont get properly cleaned every single night as they should as often as not. Bacteria can build up which changes the flavors as well, there is also what type of line is used as some palces may use a cheaper non food grade line to save money that can leach chemicals into the product being served.
When I was a teen the mcdonalds in town would NOT provide a drink without. It didn't matter how much you complained or begged they ALWAYS added ice no matter what.

Millilitre is written ml, not mL (since litre is written l and not L, although it is common to write the l in cursive (ℓ), which I guess is extra helpful if you write with capital digits in a language where you should not but a (non-breaking) space between the digits and the abbreviation for the unit (by the way you mixed using a space not using a space, in English you should not use a space)).
Wendy's employee here, we have different buttons for each size drinks, and we add ice to fill the cups.
As a Wendy’s employee, this is true lol
Yeah but the beauty about buying inside instead of drive through is you can control how much ice goes in your cup if you order Iput no ice in mine and i get 30 oz liquid only
@@willsgaming1481 I'll let you in on another wendy's secret. You can get a small drink for free, by saying you want a senior drink. You don't even need to make a purchase. If you are obviously not a senior, some stores might get mad at you if you do it a lot, but typically the person taking your order doesn't care and just wants to get you moving through their line

Food theory,
I don’t know if this is true in the U.S but in Canada, you buy a $2 dollar drink at Taco Bell, and you can refill it anytime and anywhere you want and any location in Canada.
Also, in McDonald’s Canada, their cold beverages are very overpriced, a hot fudge sundae is 4 bucks (2.90 USD) for 178ml.

You know, just buying all the size drinks w/out ANY LIQUID. Then taking the cups home & placed on a digital scale. Then fill the cup to its brim (with water only) & just write down that exact amount.
This way you can see if its best for a smaller cup.

The dollar for any size drink thing at mcdonalds only lasted about six months in my area. I was loving that while it lasted, and then one day I ordered a large coke and it was like $1.89 or whatever. At that point it's not actually much cheaper than just getting a 20oz bottle from the gas station, and the bottle is way more convenient and I don't have to down it all within a few minutes before it goes flat or becomes flavored water.
In the Uk we never got the option of 1 price for any size drink. we pay more and our large is probably about the size of your small or medium

not sure about wendy's its over filling at my local but that could just be mine. However i would say the no ice is the best option unless your dinning in, simply put there is no need for the ice, it may keep it cold but unless your not drinking it for a while the amount of ice they put in it will take up so much you don't get any where near what you will want.
