Great info, you're the King of Action Cam Comparisons! I was recently deciding between these 2 and finally chose the AS200V, though there are some things that I like on the AS50. I wonder if the AS50's LIve View Remote will work with AS200V, AS100V etc. and if it'll be sold separately....

Are the Sony HDR AS100V, AS200 and the AS50 all the same size?
In other words, can the same accessories be used for all three? I have tons of accessories for the AS100V.

The cases can be an issue. The AS100 and 200 can share a case but the AS50'a button placement make using it in other cases impossible. Most of the other accessories/mounts work but gets tricky if you are looking at case parts.

mark enjoy the thorough review. I notice you mention the bubble / round edges distortion on the side. I know there are some flat lens one can replace the OEM round lens. What are you thoughts about this upgrade? Or is it indeed an upgrade or downgrade in your opinion?
I have an AS50. Have had it a few weeks so far. I like it. Does a great job in time lapse and I love the water case.
Just got a Gopro 4 Silver. Haven't got to mess with it much yet, but I'm expecting great things.

I was wondering if the slight difference in sharpness could be attributed to the lens focus being a little off on the hdr-as50? I just bought an as50 and now someone is selling an as200v for $20 cheaper! bummer. I do love the case though. one more question though, I don't see an external mic port on the as50, is that a port hiding away under the sd card cover on the as200v?
How cold temp will the A50 record, below -10c and do you need to use the waterproof case on a dirt bike or snow machine ?

I dont get it. Why is the lens of both sonys distorting the image again? or what exactly is happening at 7:25 ish? And is that something you can correct with a lens that you can put on?
Hey mark. Thanks for this comparison. I'm a big fan of you. You replied to my last comment and I screamed in front of my girlfriend. You put so much effort into your videos and I love that. Anyway, you've helped me out a lot trying to pick out my action camera. I've narrowed it down to 3 cameras ( Sony HDR-AS50, SONY HDR-As200 and Sony HDR-AZ1). Any suggestions on what one to pick or how to choose what one to pick and can you try and do a comparison between the az1 and the as50. Thanks a lot mark. Good luck on the marriage with Amanda. dunno if you ever bought a camera but I had the az1 originally but then I found out there isn't a dive case for it so I replaced it with the as200 since it has more accessories... my friend just got the as50 and its nice especially the filming case for underwater...

Hi Mark, which is good action camera of AS200V and AS50 and SJ6. My priorities are image stabilization and no fish eye, natural colors than saturated colors and good video quality. I am planning to use it to capture for family vacation trip, cycling, walk capture and night life and wide angle without fish eye or curved effects on edges. Yi 4K is out of my budget. You can suggest a better overall action camera.

Hi! I love your camera comparison videos because they are REALLY detailed.
They really helped me make my choice for buying an action camera.
I just have one question though.
Have you tried charging the AS-200V while recording?
I live in France and I'm planning a two months trip across the US and I'd like to carry it with me all day and use a power bank.
I tried asking Sony but they told me word for word:
"We don't know. We haven't tried it."
Anyhow, thank you and good job.
Tried it and did it a lot testing the AS200 over the years. It'll charge slowly while recording but you can leave it plugged in and when it auto shuts off it'll start charging at full blast.

Hi Mark, thank very much for the videos - finding them invaluable in my research. Around the 15:20 mark you demonstrate the HDR-AS200 audio "in waterproof case" around the pool. Is that with the bubble lens or the separate flat lens case? Thanks in advance.

The problem is a little foam. remove it, made a video of it how to do it. think they are even then.

Nice comparison on both action cams. I have the HDR-AS200V but still on firmware version 1.0. I see on your video that you are running on v2.0. I've been searching and can not find the latest firmware. I do not have the Remote Live View(Sony RM-LVR2). Do I need the remote to get v2.0 firmware?
Clerical error. I was listing the remote firmware. Others pointed it out as well.

+7evnHeaven AS200V has a dedicated audio jack on the bottom.
+MarkHawkCam yes but you can't use the audio jack when the camera is used for filming with the adapter like on the helmet :-D so the question ist "Can you use the multi micro usb as audio in?"
+7evnHeaven You can access it if you are using the Sony Skelton mount. It offers some protection but you'd want to pick up a transparent lens for the front. Not sure about the USB audio input though. Could be but never really run into it. amzn.to/1TdkT3d

I have the old AS15, and this couldn't charge and record in the same time which I think is a very big drowback from Sony despite the fact that the image quality is super. Even chead Mobius can do this. Is these newer cams can record and charge? tnx

It's true. English is fine. I've spoken to Sony but they have said they don't have anything to say about distribution outside Japan.
Thanks for the review! I have as200, I took a second chamber as50 and disappointed in her. He was forced to yernut back to the store! Image lathers and sound worse.

+deepak prakash You can just plug in your camera to the PC and just download the file. I never use or needed my LVR2 for this process.

Sony makes it's own editor for free called Sony ActionCam. I personally use Premiere Pro CC. Easy to get up and running in 1-2 10 minute youtube tutorials videos. It has a monthly cost but I really enjoy the software and I like how convenient it is as well.

Mark, one question. As you know the AS50r also comes with the smart watch remote, so they can turn on the the camera using the watch. Is there any WAYS I can turn on the camera using my new Xperia phone?? In case I just want to get the camera only.
No, can only be turned on using Bluetooth from the remote. Wifi will only turn it off.

I cant really decide which one to buy, personally I do swimming, and I want a camera to record underwater footage, but the problem is that In amazon the as50 costs 198 ish, while the as200v costs 298 ( both stock) But if I choose the option with the live view, the as50 costs 330 ish while the as200v costs 370ish, the only downside tho is that i'd have to buy the dive case for the 200v.
What do you recommend ?
The sound on the as50 with the case makes me want to go as200 but people are saying that you can cut the foam inside the case and it's still waterproof... so I'm not sure hmm.

+Igor Tsybin It's pilot season where I work. Lots of 10-12 hour days 6-7 days a week. A lot later then I would have liked but the added time allowed up to get to some nice variants in setting. Started filming the AS50 vs GoPro Hero(2014), GoPro LCD, and Hero4 Session last weekend in Florida. Hoping to wrap up getting clips next weekend.
Does the AS200 have GPS? The model on Sony's website says that it does, but a lot of the retailers i've looked at don't state whether it has it or not....
It does have GPS built into the camera.

get as200, gopro hero have good quality but the as200 have steady shot and more accurate visuals. Gopro gets quiet shaky and a lot more overpriced. In my opinion

Yes but some newer functions might not work. For example, you'll only be able to power off the camera but not on.

atomicfab my new as50 is extremely blurry from factory. I wrote to Sony and asked for a repair under warranty. I will see, if it comes back with the same setting I will try a focus fix on my own

+Chadi Audi AS200v is better in capturing your surrounding, but is more expensive. In the end they are both good cameras and you notice no significant difference between both cameras as the video shows. So basically it is better to go for the AS50. However if it is also about the internal microphone go for the AS200v, since the audio quality is noticeably better on the 200
so this replaces Sony's low end, do they have a release schedule that is more or less consistent? when do you think they will replace their midrange AS200v?
+exodous02 Feb/March and Sept/Oct is when they normally launch cameras. They often have 2 releases a year however 2015 only saw a new cameras in the Feb/March window.

Yes, just loses some of the functionality that the new LVR3 offers.

+Andrew Drake Generally 3rd party batteries are roughly the same with a 10% differences at best. I personally like SmaTree batteries and Wasabi batteries
+Andrew Drake Days. I would have a weekends worth of stuff on a 64 gig card before I needed to dump. In terms of exact hours worth of footage? Depends on the recording time. Somewhere between 3-4 hours is a safe bet though.
+MarkHawkCam thanks for that, just trying to work out if a 64 would be enough I'm going over Thailand for 2 weeks but u reckon as long as you can transfer it to a computer I'll be safe.

I see that you have firmware version 2.0 on the AS200 but I cant find it on sony`s website.
+SD MTB They've changed a lot of the layout on their sites recently. Having a hard time finding the firmware section thought. Also starting to consider I might have pulled the #2.00 from the live view remote update some how. Our camera has the latest firmware just cant recall the firmware version number now. Are you sure that your AS200V uses Firmware 2.00 ? My has Firm 1.0 and I can't find any update for it.
It's the latest firmware but got the firmware version mixed with that of the live view remote's version.
