+Cheap Chinese Pieces Agreed, just so much to cover. Feel like I miss a lot. That's why I added the summary section in the quick links. Even at 10, 20, or 30 mins there is always someone who wishes I'd taken a little longer to cover what they wanted to know. It's a tough call but shorter and quicker is something I'm exploring.

I Have bought the HDR- AS50. and I have solved the sound problem, there is a foam in the divecase that covers the microphones, it is not for the impermeability, it is made to avoid the camera movement inside the case, but if you cut a part in one of the places where the microphones goes, it still doesn't move, but now you hear when you film with the case, and of course it is still impermeable. I did it and it really works

Great detailed review. The AS50 package with remote and tripod is not even released in Australia yet. So I got the AS200. Had the AS50 kit been available in AU I would have got it. The flat lens underwater case, standard tripod mount threads, and new LRV3 remote finally address the past frustrations (fails).
it was looking good until I heard about no external mic support. hopefully there will be the option to hook up a mic via the USB port like with GoPro.
Great review, the only drawback is the missing microphone jack. This is a action camera so having that option is important.
great video; very useful information. One question: as the cam is no longer splashwater-proof without the housing… did you film your snowboarding without or with the underwater housing? I´m asking because there was actually relatively good sound of the shredding on the slopes. Thanx!

Regarding the info you shared about SD cards, i have 32gb Lexar HC II micro SD card and i select the XAVC S mode without any problem, no any error appeared and have recorded some video with no issues. Maybe its only for HC I cards or its about the speed of the card because my HC II card quite fast (150MB/s).
The only issue i had with XAVC S mode was I had to search the video file i have recored in the SD card because it was saved in different folder than MP4 format videos.
Can you syc and turn on multiple as50's at the same time with the remote?
+Milton S. Kendall (M. Stuart) I think the AS200 provided a firmware update for zooming sometime ago. The LVR3 can hook up to other Sony cameras with limited functions but can actually unlock more functions then the LVR2-1 offered.
+MarkHawkCam I havent seen any firmware update for my AS200v, do you know if there is one and where to find it?

This camera takes great videos! I use SideSync with my laptop and android to screen share. I then use OBS studio to go Facebook live. It captures the Playmemories window in game mode. This solves the problem of it only connecting to Ustream. Also can use it as a webcam like this...

Now I have 32GB and it only records in MP4 seems like, when attempt to switch to HD it just shows pic of SD Card along with some number (06-04) and when I press ok - it doesn't record anything :(

What exactly are the features of the "MULTI-USB" slot? is it only used for data transfer and charging or is there more into the 'Multi" thing? Please reply.
Was on MP4 mode and the footage we captured here looked grainy on my 1080p laptop screen... switched it to the other mode for microSDXC, we'll see if it improves the image quality... (maybe poor lighting was part of the issue, we filmed indoors).
Great Review Mark thanks! could you please give us the dimension of the rectangular lens of the housing? and how does it compare to the GoPro 3 and 4 rectangular lens housing? The idea would be to check if we could fit one of the gopro adaptor for 52/55/58mm red diving filter or even ND filters.

I now so want to buy As50 except the sound problem after putting it into the water housing. It sounds disappointing. Is there any solutions? I think abt As 200 but the As50 remote looks great.

Thanks for the review, really good. I bought an AS50 which I am pleased with. I bought an XC card to use in XAVC S mode but when I view it on my lap top it is very notchy. Could this be my computer or am I doing something wrong.
Can you let me know the best settings to record my golf shot. I have used 120FPS but it is still blurred at the base of the swing. Should I use a different setting and use a software package to sort out this problem.
Hey MHC, I am trying to decide between the AS200V and AS50, any chance you can put up a side by side of those two cameras? Also do some more underwater comparisons as I will be using it underwater. How would you compare the narrow field of view for Image Stabilization on this model compared with the Sony FDR X-1000V ? Does one camera have a greater field of view ? I know it's a technical question which may be hard to give an on the spot answer for. But I was just wondering if you have noticed much difference ? Great video, Best Wishes, David

Really need your help. Been looking at buying a camera to make some CZcams home videos (interviews, etc) and take on some hikes. I ended up buying the Sony HDR-AS50 but I've noticed three things have me stumped.
1. Can I insert pictures into my videos using the editing software?
2. I accidentally left the case on the first time and the audio was horrendous. The camera seems a little fragile, do I have to leave the case off?
3. Is there any way to change the screen settings? Sometimes when you make a video you don't need that wide angle lens, so I was wondering if it was adjustable.
If you can recommend a different camera to better fit my needs, please do. I'm working on a time sensitive project, and guidance would be appreciated.
Hi Mark. A question : but with the housing part ( 60m ), the 200 may have the same image resolution of 30 or 30 remains the best ?
In the photos it seems the 30 best of 200 while in the video are the same, right? When is a video comparison between the 200 and the 30 to say who is the best ? thanks :-D
Question... does it fog up inside the case after 20 mins or so in use? I had that problem with the original AS15.
I dont have an error with my hc format card.. bought the unit a year ago. But will buy xc in the future

+Gerardo Capo Do you plan on shooting undewater? If so...go with the AS50. If underwater is not important to you, then I would pick the AS200v

I'm m not sure the wind noise reduction comparison was tested right.
It was off while the camera was facing against the wind and it was on while it was facing away from your path. It has frontal microphone holes after all and facing it against the wind, i think it exaggerated the noise with the function turned off.
Thanks Mark, another great review. You really covered a lot for your initial look. I still have a question on the angles in degrees. I think I heard you mention that the Narrow is 120 degrees. Not sure about the Wide, though, which was 170 degrees in the previous models. But I thought I heard you say that is not quite as ultra wide, so assume it is less than 170 degrees??
+Walter Klatt It's still considered 170 when set at wide but I'm having trouble find the exact MM lens. They are very close though. I normally pull it from the spec sheet but if you search "Focal Length" on the 3 links below, you'll see what I am talking about.

+MarkHawkCam Yeah, a little confusing when they mix inches and mm's, but it does appear that the AS50 is not as wide as the others. That probably explains the slightly less lens distortion at the Wide angle setting with the AS50. I do like that Zoom feature, though. Hopefully, it also works with my LVR2V (that came with my AZ1). Glad you to see finally appreciate the use of the LVR. I love mine, and use it all the time. Especially good with mtn biking and skiing (when cam is on top of helmet), and of course in the airplane.
Can we use the external microphone with external multiple?

You can provide external power to it while it's recording. Not sure it'll charge much if any at all but it'll keep the camera going.
Hello, ı've already bought the as-50 and also ı follow your recommendations for best shooting.At the beggining 20 days ago as-50 mic works well but now after ı replace sony the micro sd card with Lexar 633x 64gb, after that ı couln't be able to use onboard mic :( do you have any idea of ıt ? " camera not fell off or harsh used during this time... ???

+Ben Morris Yes it will work the X1000V and it should be able to control up to 5 cameras similar to the last one. Not 100% sure though, haven't tested it with multiple cameras at the same time but at start up it will show you which cameras it detects the wifi from.
Hello Mark, I am not able to change the angle view to narrow/normal, is it because I am not using the correct sd card ?
So for slow motion and 720p you have to use MP4? and what memory card is ok for 1080p 60fps

+barbershop22 AS50 or AS200 are both solid choices to me. I also use my Hero4 Silver a lot but GoPro will be releasing the Hero5 sometime in early summer. So if you can wait a little longer, might be worth it. In terms of higher end cameras, I'm maybe not the best source. I personally use DSLR's for higher end video like the Canon 5D Mark III or the Panasonic G4. Sony also has some good DSLR cameras for low light but I cant recall the name. I have one from 2 years ago.. However I noticed that it fogs up easily especially when using indoors. After recording for 10 minutes, the cover lens will begin to fog and it AFFECTS the video recording because the fog is visible over both sides of the screen. Any idea how to solve this fogging issue? (Recording without the cover is not practical for me because I can't be hand-holding the cam for an hour or more)

I enjoy action cameras I have the Contour +2 and I love it its simple yet versatile. this video has sold me on the AS50 and I was curious about the referral links, How do they work exactly? +Alec Schroyer Pretty much. As long as you use that link and don't switch over to another referral think it works out fine. It's not a huge commission but when 30-40 people do so it helps take the sting out of the next camera we pick up for review. Let me know what you thought of it after you've had sometime with it. I really wish the Sony line would adopt the rotatable lens similar to the Contour line.
nice review again Mark...did you film with the camera in the protected housing while boarding? ....and do you think losing the splashproof camerahousing is a problem with snowboarding? in other words....do you have to film everything now in the protected housing? or did you that also with the AZ1 & AS200?
i am asking this because i will have to make a choise between the AS200, AZ1 & the new AS50...as they are about the same pricerange...I am going to use it mainly for skiing & snowboarding.
+Jammasamma I didn't use the case minus the underwater section. I do find the lack of water proof housing an issue. For snowboarding it depends a lot on the rider. It's not an issue until you let it lay in the snow by mistake or take a bad fall and it gets wet. With the last 2 cameras AS200, and X1000 this was a really great feature. Simple added protection.

Can you use the AS50 as a dashcam? Does it start recording when your car is turned on? Is it possible to charge and record at the same time? I would like it as a dash cam and action cam...

Does wind reduction actually work? In your test you held it in front of you when using wind reduction and held it behind you when not using wind reduction. So your body was blocking the wind in the wind reduction test.

did you find a fix? i can't get clear image on this. I record at 60fps 1080p but the quality is like a cheap cam...so bad!
Wish this camera was splash proof without case. The x3000 is splashproof but it overheats outside of the case. I just sent two x3000's back because of overheating issues (causing it to shut down). The AS50 is almost perfect.

+Arex P I hope so but I currently don't know if it will. I got to imagine they'd want to but I've been wrong on predicting Sony's moves in the past.
+MarkHawkCam I actually went ahead and ordered a smartwatch 3 off of eBay, which has the same functions and more through android wear apps for more than half the price.. hope it works out!

The AS50 has new features but am sure a little tinkering and firmware flash on AS200 can make it quiet competitive. The fact that AS200 is nature proof to some extent, without the casing, was a BIG decision maker for me.

You briefly mentioned that it can stream video. That is a primary feature that I'm interested in. Do you know where can I find more information on that feature/function? I do race timing and ideally I'd like to find a camera that is impervious to the rain and dust that I can put at the finish line to record race finishers, but I have to be able to access the footage as it's steamed to my computer to verify order of finish. Any suggestions?
