DJI OSMO vs GoPro Hero4 Black vs Sony FDR-X1000V

- We've taken the better part of a few months to put this comparison together as thoroughly and showcase as much as possible. The GoPro Hero4 Black one of the highest rated action cameras out there is being put Side by Side against the Sony FDR-X1000V and the DJI OSMO. All 3 of these cameras are some my favirotes and I was really excited to see how the Hero4 would perform after a year of updates and how new comer DJI OSMO would hold up against the two top contenders. The OSMO is designed to be mounted in a handheld gimbal which offers smooth stable footage. For this review the OSMO was using Beta firmware from early Dec to address a few of the issues I found problematic. It does however introduce a rolling gimbal head that has since been addressed it later patches. We also go over the firmware and history of support each of these cameras has gotten.
There is a lot to each of these cameras we didn't get to go over, even at 30 minutes. Check out the comment section below for more impressions and questions about each of these cameras. Also would appreciate any other experiences you might be willing to share with these cameras in the comment below.

Very great review, this is the best so far
Best review and benchmark I've seen for Osmo, kudos!
Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. Appreciated :D
best comparison video ever! big thanks!
Does the Sony AS100v/200v/x1000v external microphone port record in true stereo? Or does it just copy the audio from 1 channel and duplicate it on the other?
+TheStraightPipes That's a good question. Just got in a new mic this week that can connect to it. I'll test it out and get back to you.
Awesome thanks so much. I haven't had time to test mine out so I appreciate your efforts. It'll probably be the nail in the coffin of my GoPro if the Sony can record in true stereo (with an external mic)
thanks for all your work doing this!
Aaaawesome work, mate! :)
This effort is much appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback :D
THANKS for the review
Thanks man! Great Review!
Great review man! Must have taken u a long time to make..
Great video man.
fantastic work
thank u great look at these
Thanks a lot for this triple comparison. You made something great. As a owner of a Sony X1000V, I was very interested to see something about the Feiyu G4 GS stabilizer. The result is quite disppointing. It seems that there is no handlel gimbal stabilizer for Sony, except this one, which seems bad. I hoped about the Moza mini, but it seems to have been abandoned. I need the time code recording, this is why I really do not want to swith to another little camera. Thanks again for this very interresting review
Awesome review. I find that i consistently prefer 1080p to 4k, something about the extra detail of 4k is unwelcome to my eye, it pulls my attention from the things that matter more to me and towards things that don't. I end up blowing that crap out in post anyway, favoring dramatic contrast and artful washes to crisp, clean delineation.
Then again, I tend to prefer analog audio hardware to digital plugins, and my ipod plays old soul, jazz, and elevator muzak while hooked up to an old Marantz receiver so take it all for what it's worth.
Thank You for this Video!!
BEST review ever!
+Samore Love TV Thanks :D
fantastic review! !!!!!!!
Thanks :D
Good video. You made my night :)
It's a big man, with a big gun!!! Big test! Thank you!
for those saying the x1000v was still shaky whilst on the feiyu, that's true, but bare in mind that was @ 4k/170 degrees, which disables steady shot, you need to use 1080p or lower AND set lens to 120 degrees to utilize inbuilt steady shot, so i should imagine with that turned on in-cam, with the feiyu, results would be a LOT better - great video, much effort. much respect.
+dennisdahmer It was a hard comparison. If you aren't going to ever use a gimabl, built in stabilization from the X1000V is great and well done feature. However no one really makes gimbals for the X1000V or has one on the horizon. If you are on the fence about getting a gimbal, you can buy a GoPro and consider it later. If you're all in Gimbal and maybe aren't interested in using the OSMO in dangerous situations outside of your control, that might be the better choice. All 3 are great cameras in their own way, just about finding which one suites your needs best.
great review but ya got the cams backwards for the run up the stairs with the dog 15:51 looks like the sony?
I am satisfied with this comparison - I like you for not beeing biased :)
+NicGaming Thanks, I think you had posted a comment on the color before. The GoPro is set to GoPro Color Grade, Sony is Vivid, and OSMO is None. When we explore the color profiles we switch to each cameras Flat mode.
MarkHawkCam I already noticed that and therefore edited my comment ;)
I personally never experienced the "Natural" mode on the SAC to show the colors in a way they need colour grading - they rather get shown 100% as I see it with my bare eyes (which I really like/love). I never colour grade and the colours still look "awesome" imo.
That is why I still use "Natural" colour mode all the way, even though they swtiched it with "Vivid" as default (which was a stupid decision imo).
Vivid looks way off and yellowish/redish like the GoPro does, which I never liked (sometimes it is weird if the video looks "warm" when it is filmed on a cloudy day or during winter).
Do you see what I mean and why I think you should always set the SACs to "Natural" while testing?
thanks for the great job...
Nice vid! Why sometimes I export 4k video, a little lag, sometimes will not, and yours so smoothly, the point is which part of the computer, or the length of the 4k video? Longer video when edit will easy lag? Thanks
Really good one
Thanks for reviewing them for us. I just opened my osmo + and I'm disappointed how the focus works. But before I'll start to complain I'll do all updates on that brand new stuff... hopefully its better then my gopro on stabilizer which I just sold
Hi Mark, thx for review! Great job. And thanks for 'raw' footage from those cameras. I was thinking about buying dji osmo but still, gopro has better image quality. I don't compare sony, only dji vs gopro, and in my opinion, footage from gopro is much more sharpen, theres no 'compression flickering' especially in nature landscape shot- the area with the trees shows that. Sony has a grete image Q. even in dark scenes (BSI does the job) but sound Q. is poor. Maybe DJI OSMO 2.0 will have better camera :) Best regards, and once again- thanks a lot!
Great review. I can only imagine how long it took and how much effort. Thanks
+Onus News Service Just the battery issues and calibration issues alone out in the field was a big moral killer. Just little over sights. Had one really good day only to get home and realize the Sony's exposure was set to +2 instead of 0... whole day lost.
+MarkHawkCam Another great comparison review, and can fully appreciate how difficult it was to do a triple. If I wanted to be picky, could mention a few things. But really, have not seen a more thorough and better comparison review by anyone else on the web. Keep them coming...
+Walter Klatt This one has some pacing issues and doesn't cover everything I'd want in the time frame I want. There is just so much so cover. It bugs me but my computer was literally falling apart during this as well. Spent a good part of weekend trying to get playback of 3 4k plates to run well enough to just record audio for the comparison in real time. If you follow my twitter you'll see me ranting and losing my mind during my edits in real time.
Thanks for the feedback as always :D
+MarkHawkCam Re exposure with the X1000V, just for your interest, I found using -.7 to work good for bright sunny days, while +.3 on cloudy days. This is for landscape scenery from a plane with trees, mountains and some water. Up close, 0 or neutral seemed to work just fine.
+Walter Klatt Good to know. Thanks :D
Hey Mark! Any plans on comparing the new cheap Gopro Session, particularly against the Hero+ and Hero4 Session?
Thanks!
thanks for the comparison. helped me decide to buy the osmo. Video quality is amazing with this thing
+2m8y4u Make sure you download the raw photos and videos in the more info section below this video. The Adobe DNG's from the OSMO look fantastic :D
+MarkHawkCam thank you for the downloads! Very good quality both video and still image. Was video done with filter none or D-log?
None for the normal default videos. That's what is in the download. If it looks washed out or neutral, that's D-Log. If the download video looked like that it's a mistake. I'll double check it now.
In this moment I have GoPro Hero 4 black (I use the camera in low light, partys, night clubs, concerts, etc..).... I want to buy the osmo for the stabilization, but i see this video and the gopro is better cam...... Your recomend me buy the osmo mobile and use my gopro or buy maybe gopro hero 7??
The osmo had the x3 or x5 camera?
Thanks Mark. These comparisons are amazing. Is there a recommended forum where people exclusively discuss different action cameras?
+John-Paul Wood MarkHawkCam.com and Reddit.com/r/helmetcameras
+MarkHawkCam Hey so I've been looking at gopros for a long time now I want to use it for motovlogging, snowboarding, long boarding, and for taking pictures. I was looking at the Hero3+ silver and black but also the hero3 black. I'm really stuck with making my decision. If you could help me that would be great. Ps I know the Hero4 silver and black are out and i would love to have one but it decently expensive for my price range unless you think it's worth it to save up and get the hero4 (but I would really like to have it by summer). But in your honest opinion what is the best hero3 and 3+ gopro. Thank you for your time.
+Reckless Sandman I'd go for the Hero3+Black. Great battery life, better resolution options, and good up close focal range for the sports you mentioned. Its very similar to the Hero4 Silver outside a focal change difference and some photo options. That would be my pick. Would stay away from the H3 Black. Poor battery life and its ProTune mode is limited to only filming in flat color space unlike the Hero3+ Black that offers GoPro color profile with protune enabled.
Hey Mark! What is the best actioncam (one of that three) in your Mind, if i want to use it for a short filming?
Gopro bro. U won't be dissapointed.
is the osmo the same now (July 2016) ? any updates? i wish there was something in the middle of the sony and osmo
No newer Osmo model. Lots of updates. Sony just stealth launched the X3000, successor to the X1000 in Japan. No idea when I'll have it. GoPro to have something new Aug-Oct.
Did you figure out the issue with the Sony camera x1000 at 240 frames per second having artifacts? (You must have because the video looks fine :) in another video you mentioned that possibly it had to do with the editing software. What was the issue?
I think it was originally an codec issue or I was trying to play it off the card. Once I brought all the files local and installed the ActionCam software, issues went away.
+MarkHawkCam ok thanks!
Good job. Sold my OSMO with X5 and X3. So disappointed with it!
I find it interesting that you see the narrower field of view of the Osmo as a draw back. I would see that as a benefit.
Depends on the user. Many of these action cameras are just cropping on the image sensor or give you the option similar to OSMO's default FOV (GoPro's Wide, Medium, Narrow, etc). Osmo's FOV is very similar to filming in wide and just scaling up the footage to a certain % in post for other cameras. I see the benefit but you don't have the option for super wide which has benefits of its own. It doesn't bother me to much with the OSMO but it's something to consider.
MarkHawkCam I just tend to think that the image distortion of super wide action cams tends to look like garbage
action video? gopro5- sonyx1000v- osmo plus?
hello pls help me witch one i buy sony 1000 or hero 4 black?
+Moncef Benrouida Check out the link at the very end of this video. I have a dedicated side by side of these two cameras. If you still have questions shoot me an email about your adventures you want to film to MarkHawkCam at gmail dot com
how come the sony gimbal looks shaky? also the dji osmo keeps drifting when you show the three side by side. wierd.
I went over both of these things in the beginning. The X1000V doesn't have a gimbal designed for it so we are using one for the AS200V. The OSMO was using a beta patch at the time that resolved some other more pressing issues but had the drift to it.
And is there any good gimbal for the X1000 yet?
20:13 "Sony Osmo" LOL
wow! so less likes for such a nice video.
OMG Feiyu tech G4 GS for X1000v is so shaky. Luckily i din't get one yet. It really not as smooth as Gopro with gimbal and DJI.
why this is only 1080p video?
+hellomyphone It's 4k video in a 1080p window. Not all modes for review support 4k. You can read the other comment where I went into more details about this but to summerize, you can see all the differences and full 4K quality in the setup we have displayed.
How can we tell the difference in 4K when the video is only 1080p
+Chris Barr Maybe it is still beeing processed!?
Video doesn't need to be 4K to show the difference. Same way you don't need a 4K monitor to see the difference on a 1080p screen. We show the full resolution when the clips appear full screen. When it scales between scales we go from 16.35%, 50% scaled, then 100%. This way you see the full resolution when scaled up 100% and when 50% to mimic 1080p.
Terrible dynamic range on the Osmo. The only redeeming factor is its 3 axis gimbal. Would've been nice to see the Galaxy Note 5/S6 and iPhone 6S Plus in the comparison.
OSMO>SONY>GoPro4
What do you guys think???
Excellent video, wish more comparisons were made this way, made up my mind about the osmo...... not buying it !
Have almost of a hundred of them with multiple new ones monthly. Chances are it's gonna be a busy summer.
Good comparaison. May I suggest that you speak a lot slower as this is not a race.
I'm often reluctant to watch something this long … keep up the speed talkin'
fist thing ts important for me is steady and smooth shooting and then slow motion go pro hero black far better in slow motion and in Steadicam a little bit dji is better not huge different and then in low light go pro work better. sony never be mine
and don t forget less focal length made smoothest motion n video .
in 4k dji far better
but now i saw some comparison dji is too much smooth in stabilizer vs go pro black 4. what is that
Sony Action the best!
sony FTW
i think osmo
But when it comes to shoot in motion, I imagine Gopro and Sony is way less stable than Osmo, isn't it?
+Alex He We did do some motion stuff around 14:18. Not sure if you saw this based off your comment. Of course this is with gimbal support which the Osmo is built into.
+MarkHawkCam sorry about that, totally missed that part. Great Review ! thanks.
i like sony
i think sony x1000v better
+Moncef Benrouida way better
+Moncef Benrouida x1000v颜色失真严重,镜头畸变最厉害。

Xiaomi Yi 4k > Sony > Go pro > DJI Osmo ! Xiaomi Yi 4k Raw 4k Sample Video : czcams.com/video/FNjICe322Us/video.html
I don't understand why you are favoring the Sony so much. The Gopro has the best dynamic range, natural color, balance of sharpness to where it looks cinematic and not overdone. The Sony doesn't win here, it has halos on the edges, cold colors, bad distortion, and visible software sharpening, you could sharpen the Gopro footage and it would look the same, in my opinion, it isn't a good look, very video-ish and digital rather than natural. Also the Gopro has more flexibility in post with the flatter footage. And no, I'm not a fanboy, I'm just stating my opinion based on what I see here, the Dji Osmo and Gopro win.
Agree
Don't feel like I was favoring any camera. Some cameras handle certain situations better in my opinion, but I don't feel any one of these cameras is the best all around camera. My opinions here are just meant as reference points to observe. I'm just trying to showcase as many scenarios as I can. Just want to help users find the right camera that's showcasing them best.
OMG! Do you think Sony is going to sell them a sensor that is better than the one they use in their own camera? LOL
Yep. They get paid for it.
osmo wins
now sony came out with FDR x3000
bye bye GoPro
Sony --> Go Pro --> DJI Osmo
yes
SKYY V it a yes for me
毫无疑问,大疆osmo成像是最流弊的,而且价格吊打gopro和x100v加三轴云台。osmo完胜
