You've got a great ear. Most people don't pick up Floor's growling until later or not at all. You got it within the first chorus verse.

Especially impressive when the version listened was the Nightwish Cruise version, where the Floor's growling isn't as obviously audible like at e.g. The Wembley Arena.

I find this quite baffling as it's very clear what part Marco is singing leaving the growls to Floor. Maybe they can't distinguish their regular singing voices or something. Marco doesn't sound like floor though and there is clear sample of Floors voice before the growls.

Hello @ Billy Gollner ! Nightwish fans here, your reaction just appeared on our radar..
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band performing one of the most heavier song from their repertoire. You're very perceptive, here the female singer (Floor Jansen) did the growling, when the male singer (Marco Hietala) did the clean voice, in the chorus. Floor Jansen is a total vocal acrobat, you'll see..
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
Hope you'll continue this journey with us, so I'll drop here a list of songs with the current lineup of the band you may like:

Excellent condensed band history, and my sincerest condolences regarding Ann.
Nightwish has become one of my favorite bands. I found them by sitting down and actively searching for something totally different to listen to. So I stumbled upon symphonic metal (as a long time alternative music, like Radiohead, this sub genre was a fresh change of pace for me.) I bought the album "Once" for starters, along with an ablum by Delain "We are the Others, Xandria's "Neverworld's End" and Elysian's "Silent Scream".
Nightwish remains my favorite by far in female- fronted Metal.

Oh yes, I think you’re the first reactor to notice right away that it’s Marco Hietala (bass&male vocals) with the tenor voice and Floor Jansen (female lead vocals) with the low growl in the chorus, good job and nice reaction!
Like someone already mentioned, Ghost Love Score is the usual song to start with. Probably the best demonstration of Floor’s versatility and capabilities as well as Nightwish’s long, symphonic songs with multiple parts and many changes in time signatures and keys. If you’re not up for a 10 min song, I would go for Storytime. The live versions, especially Wacken 2013 are the best performances and have very good audio quality.
And one more thing: Nightwish has been active since 1996 with three lead singers over the years. For now it’s a good idea to focus on material with the current lead singer, Floor. She’s been with them since late 2012, so look for videos from 2013 onwards to hear music from Nightwish with their current setup and sound.

    • @frankmcfrank392
      @frankmcfrank392 Před 3 lety +6

MsStecarl yes, you are correct, Jukka is no longer playing with NW and was replaced by his friend Kai in 2013/14. Like you said, most people still consider Wacken 2013 to represent the modern Nightwish sound, even with Jukka behind the drum kit. Many of the Wacken live videos are still titled official live videos and it probably helps that Jukka is still in a managerial role with the band. Troy has been playing with Nightwish for a bit longer, only appeared on three songs at Wacken 2013, but has a more important role now with the new album.

This was one of their heavier stuff. They have very wide range of songs, and both of these singers, Floor Jansen and Marko Hietala, are very diverse. Oo Nightwish has only one true lead singer and that is Floor Jansen. Floor is the undisputed Valkyrie goddess queen of metal. Nightwish is lucky to have her and vice versa. Marko is back up vocal singer during some parts of some songs to support Floor, there are some 'duets' and there are two songs that he is the actual leading vocalist. I love him!!! But in terms of being 'diverse' you can not be serious in comparing Marko with Floor.... Marko is great in what he brings he has a great raw voice but he is not diverse. And saying about Floor that she is 'diverse' is an incedible understatement of her brilliance. When Floor joined Nightwish she single handedly lifted Nightwish to a level previously unheard of both in terms of vocal reach/power. and stage presence.

Really nice reaction! :) Floor (vocalist) is amazingly talented, she is classically trained and her vocal range is to die for. Marko (bassist and vocalist) is also an amazing singer on his own, although usually he does backup vocals. Tuomas is on the keys, he composes and writes lyrics on all the songs, then there is Emppu on guitar and Kai on drums. They have one more member, Troy, who plays several instruments (such as the Uillean pipes) and does vocals too.
Perhaps you'd like to take a look at Weak Fantasy, Shoemaker or How's the Heart? (Sadly, no live performances for the two last ones yet, as they're songs from their new album). For more Marko's singing, I recommend The Islander (Tampere live) or While your lips are still red (Wembley live). Most people will likely recommend Ghost Love Score (at Wacken 2013) next, which is of course always a good pick :)
Anyway, thank you for the wonderful reaction ^^

Welcome to the world of Symphonic Metal and Nightwish! Yes, it's her growling)
Meet Floor Jansen (pronounced "Yansen", she is Dutch), the most powerful and versatile female singer today. Floor has classical background, rock academy behind, and used to be a vocal coach for a number of years. She can sing anything from more pop-y style, classic opera, to metal screams and growls. Floor is a queen of singing emotions.
You just have to see Ghost Love Score live @ Wacken [ czcams.com/video/JYjIlHWBAVo/video.html ]
And a little bit more links that shows Floor's vocal diversity:
Acoustic ("stripped down" vocals): How's The Heart ( czcams.com/video/yYtkPpFYzOo/video.html )
Classic opera: Puccini: O mio babbino caro ( czcams.com/video/UeTyAZtV5wI/video.html )
Classic duet: Phantom Of The Opera ( czcams.com/video/plCScjvDOJM/video.html )
    Soft pop: Shallow ( czcams.com/video/M68pe4a_9zk/video.html )
Touching, emotional soft: De Beelden Blijven (A Song for War Child) ( czcams.com/video/e6-6NVsbg6U/video.html )
More growling: ReVamp ( Wild Card czcams.com/video/GpZMFALYeGc/video.html)
    Latin: Qué Se Siente ( czcams.com/video/DfYeLUoqw0E/video.html )
Thank you for your reaction! Looking forward to seeing more NW on your channel!

Yes that was her doing the growls too. Two key songs to check out are Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2103 and Poet and the Pendulum live at Wembley 2015. The latter is a chronicle of what could have been one of the greatest tragedies in the metal community. Spend some time knowing bit of the backstory before doing that song. Hello Billy! Welcome aboard the Nightwish cruise... hope you're feeling comfortable here, because it will be a loooooooong journey from now on!😉 ("Yours is an empty hope" is an unusual starting harbour tho... it's more like the Nightwish ship found you in the middle of nowhere, just like Tom Hanks in Cast Away lol!😅😁)
If you want to explore Floor Jansen's vocal versatility you can either choose between Nightwish masterpieces or her participation to the dutch Tv show Beste Zangers (not competitive, 7 singers, each one showing his/her skills performing songs from other ones repertoire or personally significative for them, Floor covering Lady Gaga's Shallow 😍). If you are interested in Nightwish SIMPHONIC metal, I'll suggest to react not only to Floor's performances (could be hard: this woman's voice is something addicting) but even to other singers (previous ones and current ones) for a better/more complete comprehension of this amazing band! You are cool enough to experiment music you are not familiar to with a complete open mind, so yeah: you ARE cool!👍😎

I love each and every one of the Nightwish members. I don't think I've ever seen a band with such chemistry on and off stage. And each and every one of em is talented af and does side projects as well. They are just anything you can wish for and more. I've seen people being hooked on them after only hearing 2 songs. I've seen grown man cry hearing Nightwish songs for the first time. They should be up there with the big names like Pink Floyd and Metallica. But it's not mainstream enough for radio, so a lot of people never even heard of em.

You've only scratched the surface of what Floor Jansen is capable of, where most singers song what they're capable of, she sings whatever she feels like, the requisite nightwish material includes, ghost love score and romanticide both live from Wacken 2013, the greatest show on earth from Tampere, and poet and the pendulum from Wembley, look up the story behind that song first though, another good choice is with their previous singer Tarja Turunen doing phantom of the opera, now brace yourself, the nightmarish army should arrive shortly

The music is called symphonic metal and is very populair in Europe and South America. The band is from Finland and founded in 1996. So far the band has had 3 vocalists
1 Tarja Turunen (Finish) pure opera voice also very good live. (until 2005)
2 Anette Olzon (Schwedish) more pop style. fine in the studio but not good live. (until 2012)
3 Floor Jansen* (Dutch) (current). * She is the vocalist you saw in this clip. She has a classical vocal background education and can sing any style she likes from jazz to opera high to growling low. Believe me when i tell you you have not even scratched the surface yet of what she's capable of.
    Band members
Tuomas Holopainen (The keyboard player and creative mind behind the band. He writes about 95% of the music and lyrics)
Marco Hietela (the viking with the long beard (Bass and vocals)
Jukka "Julius" Nevalainen Later (2015) replaced by Kai Hahto because of health issues (The drummer)
Erno "Emppu" Vuorinen (the hobbit like guitar player)
Troy Donockley ( a person who did not play on this song but is a multi instrumentalist from the UK)
The clip was shot about 3 years after Floor jointed the band right in the middle of their 2012/2013 US leg of the world tour. They asked her to join after tensions between the previous (Anette) vocalist and the rest of the band had rissen so high that they fired her. With close to a year still to go to complete the tour, and their next concert planned 2 day later they, needed a replacement fast. They called Floor because she had toured with them when she was part of the support bands"After Forever" and later "Revamp" on several occasions and they were quiet impressed by her vocals (who would not be?). She only had 2 days, including a flight from the Netherlands to the US, to learn the setlist and only had one rehearsal with the band a couple of hours before her first show and nailed it. Since they were making a documentary about the world-tour a lot of what happened was recorded. The documentary is called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" (czcams.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/video.html )
As a next song to take a look at i would recommend the song that most reviewers start-out with "Ghost love score" live from Wacken 2013. This song introduced the world to new word called a Floorgasm. ;-) czcams.com/video/JYjIlHWBAVo/video.html
A friendly warning most people watching this clip developed a serious Floor/ Nightwish addiction. :-)
