Whoever designs these toys have clearly never met a child much less seen one play? Why do we this this to ourselves every Christmas season?

My husband and I got divorced 3 times while building our daughter’s big girl bed she got for Christmas when she was 2. It’s a Christmas memory I’ll always treasure ❤😂😂😂😂
I do feel this!!! There was one year my mom saw me getting upset at the toy and instructions that I was putting together for my son. She poured me a shot of brandy and told me to calm down 🤣🤷♀️🎄🎄🎄

We had to put a trampoline outside my sister's window so she could see it when she woke up in the morning. One of the corners was bent enough that we needed to use a mallet. This was at 2am Christmas morning after quite a bit of eggnog and wassail. The banging woke the neighbor who came to help with his welding equipment. As far as we knew, she never woke up.

I remember my brothers feeling like this, ☺️. They are all engineers of one kind or another and, since I am a single mother, they put together all my son's toys for me.
The things they muttered during assembly really cracked us up.
One year my parents bought me the horse-girl equivalent of a doll house. Story has it that my dad opened the box Christmas Eve and loudly declared that he couldn't put it together as the county was not open to issue the building permit.
He and I spent the week between Christmas and New Year's assembleing it together. All eleventy-billion pie was of balsa wood.

Reminds me of my father when he'd attempt to "assemble" me and my sisters' toys when we were kids; something would always get damaged in the process due to his lack of patience and no desire to read instructions. 😆

That's why I don't let my father help Ms build anything, and I'm an adult(legally).
I've never understood the "don't read directions" thing. These things regularly have three different sizes of screws and you're never going to guess which go where by eyeballing it.
This is so true! We got my niece the LOL Surprise OMG doll house last year and it literally took me like over 6 straight hours to build😅 And I only had one screw driver that was as big as my pinky to use so I got like 2 blisters on my hand🙄 The things we do for our loved ones😂
I feel the pain and frustration. Smart to do this before Christimas. Nothing is more exhausting than trying to figure out something like this, with a small child waiting to play (or help) ....or climbing on you while you are trying to assemble something for them, after you are already exhausted by all the other holiday things. (And yes holidays are at times exhausting, because they require a lot of energy. so saving yourself from spending "assemble energy" on the day is really really really smart 😘😘)
I needed this video! I needed a good laugh. My five year old and I just had a 30 minute stand-off about cleaning up her toys that were all over my room. I kept my cool the whole time, but whew, I needed a laugh.
One year we gave my daughter some big plastic monstrosity ( I don't even remember what it was) that said some assembly required. As my husband and I struggled to put it together, my dad remarked, more like total assembly required. The only thing you didn't have to do was pour the plastic in the molds!

Now ... for children's toy building ... if I can't pay extra for the store to build it or if the child is too young to build it themselves .... it simply doesn't come into our home!!! Many years ago, I spent hours putting together a bmx bike - even had to put the pin stripes and decals on it only to find that upon trying to complete the final step of installing the pedals ....the holes weren't threaded!!! The entire gear and brake assembly had to taken apart in order to take back the bad part and get a new one from the store! To say the least ..... NEVER AGAIN! 🤣
Somehow my family mostly avoided toys that needed assembly but we did have the epic Barbie jailbreak every year after we were done opening presents where my dad would get out his multi-tool pocket knife and just spend an hour unboxing Barbie dolls and commentating on all the security upgrades that had been added to the packaging since the previous year.
Just to add please check the new toys battery requirements and buy a mountain of them I know the shops are shut for only a day but not having the right battery can cause Christmas misery for the household good luck everyone!

Bought my kiddo a dollhouse last Christmas. Unfortunately, I couldn’t bring it when we moved cross country. I’ll always have the fond memories of putting it together. 😂
This reminded me of a story my mom told me about a playhouse I had as a kid. The Christmas I got it my dad went to put it together my dad opened the box, took the instructions out and showed them to my mom who was filming this and said "See these? I dont NEED these." And tossed it.
He had to rebuild it 6 times because he built it wrong.
This was HILARIOUS! I did not really identify with this, as I’ve always found these kits delightfully fun to assemble.

I accidentally bought six foot dollhouse this year. It was such a good job my 14 yo nephew was here because if not it would still not be up now. Three hours later and it's built and taking over my actual house 😂

I've learned to have a good series ready to binge watch while building... it took me over 8h to build a kidkraft kitchen the one year and I was so glad I hadn't left it for Christmas eve!

I had one for 10 years. Got the floor base put together. Sold it at a yard sale so I could stop moving it place to place. So sad.
Imagine getting one of the doll houses where you ONLY get the wood and instructions. You gotta paint it all yourself and no screws or slots. Just glue.

This is why we need charities that put toys together when its donated, what family wants to waste time putting a toy they were given together,its why id rather give bikes or balls when i donate to toys for happiness.

I was somehow Aunty and designated builder, battery manager (equipped with two tiny headed screwdrivers - philips and regular,) _and_ freer of toys from packaging - which could involved serious scissors, wire snips (if the wire was twisted too tight) and LOTS of patience ... I don't know how I remained sane lol

In 1990 Christmas. In Florida rolling brown outs since it is 18 degrees. Barbi house for my 4 and 5 year old. I thought that I lost my mind that Christmas Eve. Finally at 3 in the morning I finished. I don't know how I made it but by 6 am they were up. I feel for you.

My sister got this same doll house for her daughter, but a bigger version. It was definitely a two woman job...and it was surprisingly heavy.
This is why I always put together toys & even pulled others out of packaging to add batteries.
Also the swear jar does not count when putting things together.
My daughter got the exact same doll house for Christmas a few years back. Thank GOD I nor my husband had to put it together. My sister's girlfriend volunteered to do it but it took her 2 days to do it and she completed it Christmas Eve night. So I definitely feel your pain. Great parody as well
P.s. yours is the only green and red type holliday stuff I can stand to watch. And you have major talent.and I also must say that means a lot since I’m sure we would agree on virtually nothing and would likely be enemies on politics and virtually everything else.

Ouch... I'm an engineer, and I would be ashamed if I designed a toy this needlessly complex and delicate. I'm sure it's cost effective to produce, and apparently that was way more important than the user experience. I'm just glad you didn't leave it to the night of Christmas Eve.
I’m the one weird creature that actually loves assembling this stuff. I volunteer to help friends with prefab furniture and stuff all the time.

Hi, I'm an engineer. 😄 Cheaper items tend to have terrible assembly experiences. They don't put the money into thinking about the user when they design the product, and they use the cheapest parts possible, rather than focusing on how you put it together. I try to never buy the cheapest option. You're usually much better off going with something in the median price range for an item.
Of course, you have to figure in your own personal time/money value. Perhaps you like the challenge of fixing the horrible engineering decisions yourself. 😉

Is it horrible that I was mesmerised by the metal boxes under the tree. Please tell me that's your Christmas storage? If so, thank you for the brilliant idea. More easy and kind of huge decor without taking up the space. Then I noticed how fun your song was and the struggle that inspired it remembered how happy I gift my grandchildren experiences and leave the gifts under the tree to parents and OTHER grandparents.
At least I'm not alone I was also paying attention to them and thought that's a brilliant idea for under the tree to keep ot looking full, cannula for decor storage in off time and I'd use the tins as stockings.

I feel bad for my dad who had to build this exact doll house when I was little
I once ordered a kitchen piece of furniture. I figured I could use it in the future. It lasted quite a long time really. But…sadly we had wall rot and the thing had to get cut down…. It’s still in existence but too short…. I hat to put tiles under it…. It was pretty easy to put together and I read directions unlike you, but unlike your small print long directions, mine were larger print than that and much much much shorter. It was made of real wood and mostly out together. Guess I did good. It was expensive though.
the box comment reminded me on how i built my own doll house out of cardboard and tape, it ended up bigger than the one my parents bought me for christmas the next year, it wasn't pretty but i enjoyed it and that's all that mattered
i even made cardboard furniture for the doll house, like i really said "nah i'll make it myself"
