To me, that feels like what James Mangold’s film could be the start of. It's millennia apart from everything else and will, by necessity, focus on new characters, technology, mostly new worlds etc.

I hope so! I think the Filoni movie will more or less wrap up what we’ve been seeing for a bit, and then the Mangold movie will start the new age (the Rey movie obviously won’t ever actually get made)

    • @T-2856
      @T-2856 Před 10 měsíci +2

@@nairrdlairrd I think that, if anything, that Mangold’s film is the least likely to actually happen as he is attached to multiple other projects in the next few years.
Dave Filoni’s is the most likely to actually happen to and the New Jedi Order film has a writer, director and Daisy Ridley locked in. I certainly hope that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's film is made.

I have the opposite idea here. If there’s ANYTHING I want from James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi is for it to be ONE BIG “biblical epic” with no opportunities for sequels or spinoffs or any of that. But of course, to each their own… 😅

I think we all forget how bold Mando was at the time. It wasn't Boba Fett or anyone else we knew, and the main character didn't have a face for 99% of the show. Plus, it was pretty well executed. My dream SW project at this point would be to get that kind of bold, fun, new(ish) setting and style with the overall quality of Andor. Get us away from what we're comfortable with and make it really good to bring everyone back to SW.

I've been thinking that for quite a while. At some point, Star Wars will have to move on. Go 200 years into the future and begin a new saga. StarWars will have to do that to remain relevant. I just don't know if we have reached that point yet. Despite the internet shouting it from the rooftops in the last 5 years, Star Wars isn't dead. Star Wars has probably never been quite as alive at it is today. At the moment, StarWars still finds ways, in my opinion, to do interesting, kind of brave stuff. Look at Andor, The Mandalorian, The Acolyte. I feel they are still pushing to do stuff that's not safe, they're still taking risks. And when you look at what's happening to original sci-fi movies at the moment like The Creator, I don't think studios are given insentive to jump into the unknown. So Lucasfilm has no real reason to take that risk yet.

I remember seeing this fan made Episode 7 trailer way back in like 2012-2014 that had someone digging up a frozen and buried C-3PO, he seemed to be framed almost like a long-lost ancient technology at this point. I think a trilogy set in the far future could be really cool. Especially if they're bold with it.

I am so ready for Star Wars to evolve beyond the Skywalker saga and do something completely new. For such a vast galaxy with so much possibilities, they just keep bringing in the same legacy characters that feels like pandering to fans a bit too much. The Last Jedi tried to be original and that was the last time Star Wars dared to go against the grain, I wish they would try something new. Best I can hope for is Mangold’s project and maybe if Rian Johnson returns to do one more movie after finishing with his Benoit Blanc films

  • @nickfield1569

If the Skywalker Saga was the tale of how governments and societies fail, that was definitely George's conception of it, then I think it would be most rewarding for the post-sequel stories to be about how governments and societies succeed. That this era would be about successfully building a New Jedi Order and a New Republic that held, breaking the cycles of chaos, at least for a time

    • @Panimal98
      @Panimal98 Před 10 měsíci +9

Aa much as I enjoy the first two sequel films, I admit that this is what the sequels should have been. I love the Last Jedi's concept of failure. I feel that entire trilogy could go deeper into that.

To be fair, the Republic and Jedi kept the peace for a thousand generations (although the Acolyte seems to be changing this). Remember we only see the Jedi Order during the prequels, which is set in the "Fall of the Jedi" era where we see them ultimately fail. But yes, I hope that the new saga shows the New Jedi Order and the New New Republic succeeding. But isn't that hard to do because you need the bad guys to successfully hit them so there's a story?

I agree, and I think we will see this in the coming years. If not in Star Wars, then more generally in pop culture. Historically, when we've been progressing and developing as a society, art and literature has always been reflective and critical - and vice versa; when the future is looking bleak and we are backpedalling (like the US currently), we seek hope, inspiration and cherish the good in our art.

Coming from a Sequel critic-turned-apprecator, here's some suggestions: a sequel Saga that delves much deeper into Star Wars lore, perhaps Rey learning more about the history of the entire Jedi Order, the Mortis Gods and exploring the contents of the Sacred Texts. Another thing I would love to see is more expansion on Finn and his force sensitivity (implied in TROS). Honestly, there's so much potential to be had.
My only fear is the whole toxic Fandom Menace backlash thing. So many genuinely talented people might be turned off from working with Lucasfilm again after what they had to deal with. I genuinely enjoyed Daisy and John's performances and want to see more risky, experimental projects like TLJ and Andor. Hopefully, the next wave of films will be a better experience for the returning and new actors.
Edit: I also hope that the next generation of Star Wars fans finally breaks the chain of what I like to call 'fandom generational trauma'. It happened to a lot of us then-younger fans with the Prequels and we ended up doing the same thing with the Sequels...

Star Wars film series or show comes out and is *_THE MOST HATED THING EVER MADE IN HUMAN HISTORY,_* then a new Star Wars trilogy or show comes out a decade later and becomes the *_NEW_* most hated thing ever made while the old hated stuff is deemed by meme culture to be the greatest achievement in human history and that becomes the new popular opinion. And then the cycle happens again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And aga- okay, you've probably got the point.

Something I've wanted (and experimented with) is them taking Star Wars hundreds of years later. Now, that doesn't mean it has to be completely separate from the Skywalker Saga. I'd want them to include characters like Vader and Luke, to act as a dichotomy of the good and evil, and how that evil is redeemed. Somewhat like Avatar (without the inherited powers), where Luke and Vader reveal themselves to a Jedi and shadow them, teaching them and preparing them to fight the next big fight. Its not really that I want to tie us down to the original trilogy with this, but I think that link, the influence of the Skywalkers, is always felt in Star Wars.

Point being the history of this galaxy should be so long that it’s possible to have a full saga set in it that’s completely unrelated to anything else we’ve seen.

Also just entirely new factions, threats, aesthetics and more to dig into.
My problem with the sequels was it looked way too much like the original trilogy, we still had X wings, tie fighters, empire 2.0, rebels 2.0, yet another jedi purge back to back with the previous one and its just tiring to see the same conflict recycling non stop, why I loved stuff like KOTOR or legacy era in the old canon because they moved away from being stuck in the same era with the same factions and ship types.

I want to see the Dawn of the Jedi era become a full saga. The first trilogy deals with the discovery of the Force 25,000 years BBY with the third film showcasing the first use of the Dark Side. The second trilogy deals with the suppression of Force worship in the aftermath of the Dark Side incident, with a sort of major "hallelujah" moment that converts much of the galaxy to believing and quantifying it's existence. The third trilogy deals with the split between light and dark as the final film forges the first true "Jedi Knights" and the first true "Sith Lords".

I agree with you 100% so don't get me wrong. I think a lot of people just feel let down with some of the series we have gotten. Like people wanted more Boba Fett, but his show ended up being disappointing to a lot of fans. People want Luke Skywalker, but all he gets are weird cameos in tangentially-related shows instead of a dedicated series. I also think the other problem is that people have been fantasizing about these characters for over ten years now. Our imaginations have been bursting with creative energy for years, decades in the case of the OT cast, and expectations are so much higher now, that, unless a series is really well-written and well-made, it's inevitably going to disappoint at least some because it won't live up to those (potentially unrealistic/unfeasible) standards.

If they do make a new saga all together, it should be in a different galaxy, like the one that was just set up in Ashoka. A COMPLETE fresh start. No Jedi, no sith, no empire, we set up new characters on a new quest with new factions. We can have something similar to the Jedi, i mean the force still exists. Maybe “Jedi” and magic in other galaxies are completely different. There’s a lot to create without the restrictions of lore in the main galaxy.

But I also think people are way too triggered by seeing repeat characters in Star Wars. Sometimes you just like to see what you know. It’s like coffee do you get sick of coffee maybe you’ll switch it up and get a different brand or maybe get a late for a change, but you don’t just quit coffee because it’s just the same thing over and over.

So at 03:00 you mention about wanting more of the same gets boring. I really agree on this. BUT i will also say there are some things we need more of because what we originally got was not good enough.
Hayden played Anakin as well as he could with what he was given, but clone wars (anime) made his character so much better, so when hayden again played him, he could play him in a new way that felt SO much better, and i want more of that.
Luke and Obi Wan i felt got great character in the prequels (for obi wan) and main movies. But i feel like they destroyed lukes character in episode 8 and that pissed me off a lot.
So i think its more that we need new, but we also like to see the old done right.
Also a lot of new with a bit of old will help introduce the new :)

I know some people hate the idea. I used to. But at least then the people who love certain continuities or canons get what they want. Some people will never give the new canon another chance and some people will find plenty new/old content to enjoy from that

I like the idea of starting a Saga based that focuses on Mandalor and the new Jedi. If the new Jedi counsel or whatever is formed after the Skywalker Saga, what if Madalor has already got it's own Force allegiance. They had long reclaimed the planet before the new republic even fell and because of Grogu, or the new introduction of Sabine's place in the force, what if the Mandalorians created a new order of force users within their own ranks. What if the Mythasaur is a Bendu that existed on Mandalore, if the Bendu in rebels spoke of peace and being in the middle, what if there is a Bendu that is in the middle and of balanced in times of change and war. The force isn't Dark and Light but Change and Chaos vs Peace and Order. The true light is the acceptance of both, the true dark is the rejection of any one of those things?

I actually disagree. I think that Star Wars can take the franchise in new directions and introduce new characters by building off of what we have now rather than starting with a clean slate. I'd argue they should stay in the episodes 1-9 timeline and use some existing characters but explore new corners and conflicts within the galaxy. It's a big now multi galaxy universe with various factions, locations, and stories to tell and I don't think you have to fully separate from what came before to tell new stories.

Personally, I think interconnecting stories were part of the reason I lost interest in the Post-ROTJ era of the Star Wars Legends books I read ("New Jedi Order" to "Crucible"). It was obvious you could not pick up a book at random and have a sense of everything that happened because of what came before, especially when old plot threads from books prior to "New Jedi Order" were used to form subplots to tie up loose ends.
It is perhaps the biggest problem I had with the "Ahsoka" series: you could only care about Ahsoka in that series if you saw "The Clone Wars" and "Rebels" shows prior (which is shocking, because the show did a great job of introducing other animated characters so that the audience could connect without such background knowledge). And even then, the only importance of Ahsoka as a character was that she was connected to Anakin Skywalker, a relationship which quite frankly, was completely unnecessary to know about in the grand scheme of the saga. Furthermore, her series felt like it ended in the middle of a story, leaving far too many loose ends to justify it as a stand-alone project (Baylan's plot thread might be completely useless, despite all the build-up it received, unless a character like Shin picks up where he left off. RIP Ray Stevenson.)
What fun is it being a fan of something if you have to do all your homework and research to enjoy a story?
For instance, making "The Book of Boba Fett" a stand-alone series is a jarring experience because it has "Mando Season 2.5" intersected in it. If a casual viewer did not do their research, they wouldn't know they were supposed to watch two entire seasons of a separate show to get what was going on.
While I admittedly do want to see one more project with Rey, I also recognize that the door is open to go anywhere. So why is it that instead of always foraging forward, "Star Wars" tends to want to fill in the gaps between projects? As long as we are stuck between Episodes I-9, we can't really get anywhere. Which is why I am hopeful for the Rey movie or projects like "The Acolyte"; either of those would not be fill-the-gap side stories with unexpected, yet familiar cameos (looking at you "Mando Season 2") but instead be able to take risks to bring change (shows like "ANDOR", but with completely new characters rather than recycled ones).

The biggest issue with SW is it's refusal to let go of the past, and unfortunately a large vocal majority of the fanbase is very much to blame for this, crying and screaming when it's not their way. Some of the best, greatest SW media was done not pandering and adhering to fans - TESB, the prequels, TLJ, Andor - the backlash was high but they worked because they were doing something fresh and new. Lucas was lambasted for making the prequels different, so much that he moved completely away - and now they're loved by a huge generation. SW has got to do fresh new things, and not bow down to a fanbase that will always be critical. Do what's right for the story, not what fans want (and let's face it, most fan ideas suck). As long as the story and direction/ideas are good it'll always be a success, and right now they've got to create some fresh new stories with new characters and not keep remixing the same old for a group of people who always want the same thing

When I had my podcast, I kept saying over and over how Star Wars needs to grow beyond the Skywalkers in order to remain relevant. But does Lucasfilm and moreover, Disney have the guts for that? We know the Skywalker saga and its iconography pulls in all the people in all the demographics. It's a license to print money, and I don't know if the powers that be have the nerve to deviate from that.
Starting fresh may be good for some of us (me included), but by doing so does Star Wars "lose" its competitive edge by stripping away the things people love about the franchise? Sure you can still have spaceships and lightsabers and the Force, but on their own, they are only a part of what makes SW special. Competition is fierce and Star Wars is now "one of many" options audiences have to choose from. The thing that makes Star Wars unique and special in the minds of most fans (I think) is the characters and the unexplored lore surrounding those characters. Take those away and does Star Wars become a generic franchise? Also, what happens when the die-hard fans get OLD? The 1st generation of fans is now well into their 50's. Prequel era kids are now in their 30's and pushing 40. Younger generations get to fragment their time, love, and money among Marvel, DC, and countless other franchises that SW didn't have to really deal with until relatively recently. There's only so long for Lucasfilm and Disney to milk old bank accounts and eyeballs before they become passive, less invested in the franchise, and morph into a casual (read: non-paying) fan.
So yeah, do the "right" thing and make Star Wars fresh again. At least try. But I think the day of SW being the box office beast is done.

I was personally thinking that after Filoni’s movie, we would finally get Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy and that would be its own saga. That being said, I have no problem with Rey’s movie leading into a new saga. A new Jedi Order could lend itself well into the concept that could go beyond just Rey. But we’ll see. A new Saga that has little to do with what we know should not start with Rey if that's truly what you want. A new Saga has to be thousands of years in the past or hundred of years in the future for things to feel like they have stakes once again. You need to let the universe breathe and reestablish itself if you're going into the future, and you just can't do that with Rey, it's just too soon, you want to be hundreds if not thousands of years later so that things can be fresh. Going into the past, you have The Old Republic and Mandalorian Wars, and yes, those are familiar areas for those super in the know, but at least there's plenty of time for things to then realign for the High Republic and then the Prequels. A new Saga needs the space.

The fans don't want to see the same thing over and over again, the problem is that Hollywood is too devoid of creativity to actually make new/unique, impactful star wars content as long as Disney Board rooms are the primary decision makers for the franchise. The only hope would be to bring back Lucas to write the story and have someone who actually knows how to direct dynamic character dialog to help bring the characters to life off of the page.
