Andor has been so damn good, honestly I forget it’s a Star Wars show sometimes, it can really stand on its own
Absolutely! It’s not just good Star Wars, it’s really good television that’s just set in the Star Wars universe. I am loving it!
I keep saying each week, this show is the best live-action Star Wars show by far. It is just so amazing to see how in-depth it goes into the characters and their motivations, and it is also incredibly well shot and directed. It’s simply incredible
And I will keep saying this show is the best show of this year by far....in-any-genre-period.
For me, it’s not even close. Andor is a superior show by so far that there’s not much use comparing
Mandalorian is better by a lot. Andor is boring.
Andor is almost too good to be a Star Wars thing. Which is weird to say for someone that loves Star Wars as much as I do, but this franchise has never seen writing this good before.
Because unlike all the movies and the shows, Andor is 100% committed to its themes and tone.
An exclusively mature approach gives the opportunity for far better and more nuanced writing.
Writing that the main movies couldn't have even if they wanted to, due to those movies having to be enjoyable for all ages and being full of fun adventures, leaving little space for build up.
The statements that make me really annoyed are the ones like: "But Andor dies anyway!" "I didn't even care about him in RO" "It's Disney so it can't be good" or my personal favorite "what's Andor?"
I hope this show gets the recognition it deserves at some point
I like that instead of flooding you with Easter eggs and callbacks throughout the series, they just pack it all into that antique store. It’s like they are showing the fans that think there’s too many callbacks and nods in Disney’s Star Wars (Like Greedo here) that they hear them and are making changes accordingly. Love it!
That's a great point! They are relics and shouldn't drive the show. Just put them in a museum.
Andor is truly the best Star Wars has to offer. I hope the numbers pick up when season two drops. This is the Star Wars most of us wanted, methinks. Its just not reaching everyone yet. Boba Fett and Kenobi really brought things down, making it harder for Andor to take off.
I'd say Rogue One made it harder as well, in the sense Andor was just one out of a half-dozen "meh" characters in that movie. I sure wasn't excited for it, until the first episodes came out and HG recommended it. Hopefully the hype grows enough for people to come back to this character, because he's so much more interesting in this series.
I never noticed that inverse of Syril and Andor's mother's. Makes me wonder what else i missed in terms of characters. This show is just incredible
It’s funny, because as much as everyone leans into the show “not being full of call-backs and Easter Eggs”, it IS!! I was hyped when I saw Quadjumper in the last episode, just because it’s cool that there are people who are utilizing existing art to it’s fullest potential.
Even Tony Gilroy said in an interview that the art department is full of SW fans who nerd out every episode.
I love it. Production value rules, the story is gripping, the performances are just *chefs kiss.*
I agree! But it’s all done in service of a clever and compelling story rather than as a distraction so that fans don’t stop to think about how the story doesn’t make a lot of sense (looking at you, Rise of Skywalker!).
We need both the Mandalorians and Andors in star wars, both work so well on their own tones
Exactly, The Mandalorian is a great show, but I don't want every SW show to just be like The Mandalorian, and the same principle applies for Andor too. In my eyes, every single SW show and movie should feel distinct and unique, and like the creator of said show/movie is being allowed to make their own stamp on the series and its legacy
@@christianwise637 Indeed, i dont want SW to feel stale and repetitive
“I can’t swim” has to be one of the most heartbreaking things in the entire franchise
Amen! It’s realising the more mature and rich potential this universe has always had.
I hope it hits big numbers over the holiday season, I’ll try to watch it again; REALLY want to see more of this kind of thing in the future.
The first 3 eps really wasn’t my thing but I grew to like it somewhat. The prison arc was definitely the most engaging part for me.
That transition at 3:52 will go unnoticed by most, but frankly it's amazing.
Andor was amazing!!!! Just wanna say thanks for stopping by for my bad batch stream! it really meant a lot to me!
People that say Andor is boring seem to only be able to take things at face value. There's so much going on in this show with the sub-textual themes shown with amazing acting by all involved
How does mon mathra doing her taxes for 5 episodes have sub-text?
@@solason3115 Maybe subtext isn't always the most appropriate word but calling it "Mon Mothma doing her taxes" is definitely only taking it at face value (Particularly it's not actually taxes, it's about hiding her rebel funding from the empire as the empire starts investigating how and where people spend their money). It's really Mon Mothma working keep both the rebels supported and hidden at the same time, whilst having to keep her own facards up which negatively effect her personal life which the deeper she goes the greater sacrifices she has to make which on the whole intertwines will the moral struggle she has with the actions required for rebellion. It's good drama, with depth and conflict. Yes it relates around finances rather than battles and uprising, but those things are intertwined which is a key element of the show and again still has it's own stakes and drama. It's not her sitting around filling out forms and doing maths, it's about her forming allies, making deals with criminals and the sacrifices she has to make to get it done.
The thing is i'm tired of the Empire / Rebels stuff ... Or the new versión Resistence / First Order from the remakes
@@solason3115 The same way the taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is interesting 😄
What really made me interested in Syril was seeing his clone trooper figures. It started to make me think. He had to have been a boy when the droids attacked in Revenge of the Sith
Slow burn is an almost perfect description for it. I hear Alan Watts saying "you see my hand because of the outline in the background. Were there no background the hand itself would vanish" and "you cannot have the ups without the downs." The slow parts serve to build tension that's released when the action happens. We all knew Andor gets out of prison, there's no surprise there. But how? Why? These are only answered by showing what happens in the prison, how a breakout builds. What this does for the series is better than just a "mature" or "nuanced" Star Wars, the slow burn gives it a re-watchability that's been lacking.
Sidenote: Do you know what I got out of rewatching some of Kenobi? Apparently my brain can block out shaky cam in memory, but rewatching knowing what's happening it's all I can see. And it's annoying. A show I looked forward to for years and I'm annoyed by watching it! Visually, that show was robbed if Andor was something they could do all along.
Thank you! I have been absolutely adoring Andor! So glad we are still able to get good quality out of Star Wars!
I couldn't agree more. This show is exactly what it wanted when i heard Disney took over. I only hope they hear the right voices when deciding to make more like this. I want more like this.
I hope we get more of this writing and directing with Star Wars, Acolyte! This is a story line we have never explorded, please don't screw up this opportunity!
I like to think of this show as what really happened and a story like a new hope is the cleaned up story we tell to kids
The tone of this show was what I was expecting The Mandalorian to be when it's first season was about to come out. I thought it would be a methodically-paced character driven drama with sprinkles of action instead of what we got. Not bashing Mando S1 by any stretch but I wish Filoni and Favereu would move away from pulpy action
The Mandalorian is great. Both seasons.
Eh I think there's a place for both. The charm of Star Wars is that it can be any genre
Star wars is pulpy action, we need that to remain or it'll become a BBC 2 drama. That being said, Andor is amazing, we need both sides of it.
I think it’s nice to have both. Dave filoni for the more flashy side of Star Wars and tony Gilroy for the deeper character driven stories. How is there anything to complain about there?
The first 3 eps of Mandalorian Season 1 are some of the best of Star Wars I've seen recently. But after Epsiode 4 I realized "oh this is where they're going nvm" 😑
My favorite Star Wars since The Last Jedi! I absolutely love it. Its so dramatic and the whole aesthetic new things it adds to star wars like music or ways of shooting, it's beautiful. I am interested in every character in this show and this like never happened in this way in a Star Wars for me.
Fellow Last Jedi fan!!
Quite right, dear fellow! 🫡🫡
You are so right. It is also my favourite SW story since and with The Last Jedi (yes, I loved this film). It might be my fourth favourite Star Wars story ever. Right behind the Thrawn trilogy (that one remains my number one. It is THE SW trilogy for me, yes, even beating the Original Trilogy) and the final four episodes of The Clone Wars and The Last Jedi.
While I like the story up to a point, and it has my favorite Falcon scene in the Saga, I can’t stand The Last Jedi.
But I LOVE Andor. It’s truly magical.
I wonder what exactly gives this show such broad appeal across the fan base.
Lol
Andor was my least anticipated project. I was surprised by how much I ended up loving it after just the first couple of episodes.
First time I've been excited about star wars since the last jedi
I think the most clever thing is how they manipulate you into rooting for Syril and Dedra by making them so sympathetic in a unique way. Particularly Syril, what a loser!
They give them the struggle that USUALLY the protagonist has: they know the truth but nobody will believe them. They need to fight to be heard. You strangely relate to that and want them to succeed, almost forgetting that they are on the "bad" side. We are on their side for the same reason that we can't help but rudely correct people on the internet all the time. We want the truth-tellers vindicated and the mystery solved.
The Empire is looking for the truth, and the Rebels are the ones who have to always rely on lies. It's an interesting turnaround that doesn't have to rely on traditional ways to build sympathy for villains, like some grand ideal or cause, or having a kid to take care of.
Unfortunately, I do feel like Cassian is the least interesting character in his own show, though Diego Luna plays him perfectly.
I wasn't totally sold on the first three episodes but with each one since, it's just gotten better and better. Makes me wish that they hadn't chopped from Five Seasons down to Two, I want at least one more so we're not completely blitzing through 4 years of stories when we've just spent 12 hours covering not even an entire year of Cassian's journey. This show has really grown on me and I get the feeling we'll all be left wanting more even when there can't be after Season 2.
Where is my Kenner Prison Playset ™with realistic assembly line action?
Kino Loy and the prison arc was some of the best television in a while
Show is awesome and a much needed breath of fresh air as much as I like the pulpy fun of a Mandalorian. We need different feeling shows if Star Wars is to live on
ONE WAY OUT!!!!
Ditto, ditto, ditto! I’m a fan of Cyril also. Characters and cultures are so fleshed out. I’m hoping by the time Mando season 4 rolls out, character develop and pacing will go deeper. I want Andor to influence all major new SW in various ways without copying it. It’s just so good!
Unfortunately Star Wars has been stereotyped as the swashbuckling pop culture space saga, and it doesn’t help when Andor airs on Disney Plus but high is synonymous with kids programmed for the most part. I bet you everything that if it aired on Netflix e show would get more viewings. This is Star Wars for adults or late teenagers. It too sophisticated for the previous Star Wars stuff we’ve had before. I personally love Andor, such a breath of fresh air.
The very best of Disney Star Wars. Not saying a lot, but this show slaps. No coincidence it has its roots in Rogue One.
Love you man❤ thanks for the mall music it always puts a smile on my face lol reminds me of your streams from 2 years back
I love this Show! Its about time we have a Character driven Story in Star Wars. Can't wait for Season 2!!!
Amen, love that they trusted us by not dumbing everything down. Its not gonna sell any childrens toys, this was made for a mature audience...thank god...finally. Hope to see more of this style in the future.
Andor is perfection
HelloGreedo, if I'm not watching your videos, I'm not watching _any_ SW videos. You've remained my favorite SW commentator since I found your channel in 2016 or '17. I'm so happy to hear you enjoying this show I find just as special. Looking forward to checking in again on your next videos, and just know that if I've ever passed you on the street without knowing it...had I known, I would've given you a very appreciative handshake haha. Keep up the great work and I hope your life is going swell.
Greedo is the best Star Wars CZcams page, don't @ me
Andor has the best pacing of any SW show hands down. The only pacing problem ive had so far is the fondor battle scene, since it felt a bit out of nowhere. But that's a mild complaint at best, and it was a cool enough scene that I can forgive it
Andor is my favorite live-action Star Wars show ever.
I typed the title of this video into google, and this is where I ended up.
Holy crap. Actual content starts 4 minutes(!) in. Sweet lord.
As someone who has followed HelloGreedo for years now, Andor feels almost tailor made for him from what he's been saying he likes about StarWars all these years lol
Well, I'm glad you're enjoying it man. Personally the experience for me has been pretty "meh".
Frankly, I don't feel there's anything really "fresh" or "new" here, it's just another story taking place in an already familiar era, telling a story of a rising Rebellion
against Paplatine's growing Empire. We've seen this before, hundreds of times. Same Stormtroopers, same Tie fighters, same speeches about "Rebellion".
To me, fresh would be exploring a whole new era. After all, this universe is litered with ancient galactic history, don't you think it's about time we started actually
seeing that? It's all the more reason why I'm hyped for "Acolyte" than anything else. This show just feels mature for the sake of "mature", while ditching the
play and whimsey that Star Wars is known for (I mean, kinda' weird they couldn't have ONE goofy alien in that prison arc?). I think it's time to start
abandoning the Skywalker era for a long time, and start seeing what else this universe has to offer. They're still playing it safe and familiar.
Couldn't have said it any better. Andor is fantastic
Nice! Video lasts 11:38 minutes
I don’t get peoples criticism of “it doesn’t feel like Star Wars”. Feels like the tone of a rebellion to me
This is the most refreshing thing since Mando season 1 and easily the best thing since the OT, possibly even better
Can't express how happy I am with the old HG intro back.
This man is like the anti theory lol
Well HelloGreedo has a real job and doesn't need to rely on clickbaity crap like theory. Greedo always keeps it real!
I agree
This show could be set in any other universe or even irl, and that's a good thing, the fact that it is set in Star Wars iz the icing on the cake
Well.... I have to say, I'm surprised to hear you say this! I personally LOVE Andor! But... given your stance on Rogue One.... 😏 I'm surprised to hear you dig its grit!
I love you man keep up the great work
You basically said my entire thoughts on Andor, fantastic show. Looking forward to Ep. 12.
The only valid criticism I've seen of Andor is that almost every single character is human. Not many alien characters that are part of the story. They're just in the background sometimes. That's where sometimes it doesn't quite feel fully like Star Wars. Still put Andor at the top of my list.
Strong imperial presence on Aldhani barely allows human tribes as is, they are mostly displaced
And the prisons are separated by species and gender
There needs to be shows based on the Empire’s viewpoint of the war such as Rebels are terrorists or maybe about the early Sith. Dark Horse comics did some great stories on this topics.
There are a handful of works that transcend their medium & exist as part of the collective artistic standard. S1 of Andor has become one of those works along with The Wire, Breaking Bad, Mad Men etc... I have been a critic & journalist for years & I can confidently say the level of artistic intent & execution on display in Andor is absolutely phenomenal. As counterintuitive as it may seem, my fear is that because it exists as part of a large IP it will risk being overlooked or underappreciated.
Yes.
Love you, Greedo!
Its crazy to me that people say that Andor doesnt feel like Star Wars because one of the first things I thought while watching it was how much it felt like Star Wars.
Just caught up with Andor not too long ago, so I'm only getting to this video today! I honestly thought Andor was better than HotD. Andor did remind me of early seasons of Game of Thrones, and you made a great point about House of Cards and The Crown. I haven't been so excited about people in rooms just talking to each other since these shows, and until I watched Andor haha!
Great video mate 🎉
It's great to see life outside these "super" beings, it's the normal life that exists around those people. Like star wars is famously from the droids perspective on a big journey we are seeing it from the working class about the world
Damn that advertisement had me in a trance haha watched all 3 minutes of it
HG! Do you have a playlist or list of all the music you use in your videos! As a student this is the type of ambient sci fi I look for to study to. I would love anything ya got!
One of the great tragedies is we finally have a star wars show worth watching, and enthusiasm for the franchise in general is at an all time low. Andor is a slow burn but I think it is the best thing lucasfilm has put out since the first season of the Mandalorian.
As one of those people who call out Andor for not entirely feeling like Star Wars, I came to love the show for what it is. In the best of times, it's just a good show that occationally have recognizable SW elements, but it is just a damn good sci-fi. What defines Star Wars for me is this feeling of grungey, old universe with ubiquity of technology among civilization (save for remote locations, e.g. Endor). So when I saw the trailer, I was taken aback by the harsh whiteness and sanitary conditions -of our minimally invasive enforcement techniques- that was present for the Empire that would otherwise be drab and dreary grey, and the reveal of what would be identified as Ferrix being oddly backwater that makes me think vaguely of Dune. So while Star Wars can have an ever-evolving aesthetic as the Prequels have given us, it still holds onto a certain...traits that makes a certain aesthetic definatively SW as opposed to other sci-fi.
So at the end of the day, I am very glad to have Andor added to the Star Wars roster, it is also perfectly fine for me if it is not, and instead something to stand up on its own (obviously by removing the overtly SW references). I hope this is the direction we go forward, as I too am getting sick of all the easter eggs and familiar faces shoved down our throat (to the point I didn't even want to watch Andor after the debacle that is Book of Boba Fett and Kenobi).
Jesus Christ that ad was half the video
Although we've seen Andor before in a movie, he wasn't fleshed out much. He was a supporting character who was portrayed as a cold rebel agent and that's it.
This is the first Star Wars since the OT which I can call truly great!
Made some great points and couldn't agree more. As much as I love Star Wars (and I did a lot until I watched TROS 🥲), Andor is the breath of fresh air that Star Wars needed IMO, instead of what had felt like constant regurgatation of everything that has come before, which seemed to slowly suffocate the franchise. But you definitely don't need to be a Rogue One / Star Wars fan to enjoy the show as it's just a very well put together and gripping show in its own right!
I agree all around even down to loving Star Wars into TRoS (especially agree with that part). TRoS almost completely turned me off the franchise. Since TRoS I’ve only watched TCW S7, like 5/6 episodes of Bad Batch before dropping it, and Mando S2 (which combined with TRoS to further put me off the franchise with how hollow and fanservicey it was). It took me a long time and a lot of people I trust saying Andor’s great in order to give it a try. Just watched it recently and it was great. Doesn’t quite reach TLJ as my favorite Disney Star Wars thing but it’s way above everything else.
I wish Star Wars Theory got it like Hello Greedo.
that fanhome thing looks pretty legit
Fully agreed!!
Aww I can't get Encyclopaedia because I live in the UK, damn that sucks because I love getting lost in all the detail. I guess it's back to Wookiepedia for me. Great video btw 😉
I Agree with you 100% I also heavily anticipate "The Acolyte" next year as a fresh piece of content from the franchise, while I know "Ahsoka" is just going to be the same general affair we get from Filoni (possibly on steroids).
THE OLD SCHOOL INTRO.
Hey! just a heads up the link is dead in the description for the sponsor
I would 100% agree to this
What I want most is for someone to do what Tony Gilroy is doing for the sequel trilogy characters and the Skywalker Saga in general. They had a fantastic storyteller in Rian Johnson but let him get away. They need to attract someone like that and not a franchise caretaker like J.J. Abrams, Jon Favreau or (recent reporting suggests) Steve Levy. This 'playing with action figures in the backyard' attitude creates nice moments, but not rich narratives. Lucasfilm under Kathy Kennedy has made some great work, but it's always been terribly afraid, and the most refreshing aspect of Andor is how fearless it is. We need more Star Wars that's fearless
Couldn’t agree more. God they really need to just let Rian do his thing again.
I like the outro music! What is it called? Thanks!
Thank you for this video. Andor is my favourite SW story under Disney since and with The Last Jedi (yes, I loved this film). It might be my fourth favourite Star Wars story ever. Right behind the Thrawn trilogy (that one remains my number one. It is THE SW trilogy for me, yes, even beating the Original Trilogy) and the final four episodes of The Clone Wars and The Last Jedi.
Seeing that "House of Dragon" is getting a physical BluRay/DVD release this year, made me wonder, why Disney did not release any of the SW series physically. Yes, it is obvious, that they try to "force" people to the subscription of Disney +, but I still think that the BluRays/DVDs would sell and would attract a (maybe small) "new" viewership. Their might be people, who are not subscribed to Disney + or people, who refuse to subscribe to it, literally because of the exclusivity of the series....
What are your thoughts on that dear HelloGreedo?
Thank you so much for your passion.
Couldn't have said it any better!
Andor is not slow, it is steady, it builds up and so far, man did it deliver.
as much as i enjoy mando this is leagues above.
I'm always sad to hear that people find it slow and do not take the time to immerse themselves into it and for the "not feeling like star wars" part, i strongly disagree too, there are parallels and implicit references to what we know, you can transpose the death star to the empire itself which the show kinda does.
Remember episode 4, there is a lot of world building too and that is not a negative, we would not enjoy the rest as much if not for that world building.
Andor is so, so sooo good
The best Star Wars product in a long time and saddly and probably the last one
Absolutely agree! And I wonder if this series will enhance the viewing experience of Rogue One. You know, how a lot of people felt like Clone Wars made them appreciate the Prequels more? Yeah... I happen to already like Rogue One quite a bit, but all of its rebel characters were really underdeveloped and not interesting to me. More caricatures than people with a story ark. Now I can't wait to watch it again, knowing Cassian, knowing how much of a fight he's already been through.
And because so far it’s actually been more of an ensemble than just hyper-focused on Andor, the context of Rogue One is even further enhanced. I appreciate the rebellion itself so much more and will never think of it in the same way again. It’s now inextricably linked to Maarva, Kino, Nemik, Bix, Luthen, and so many others whose sacrifices truly broke my heart. Rogue One will be the culmination of all of their stories and have so much more meaning.
Absolutely 💯%
You should really put a link to the outro song in the description or something its really good. Same with that lofi star wars that used to be your outro song.
Search lilac skies by Corbyn Kites :)
@@ShrekReacts Thanks!
Agreed!
Would be cool to see a Ninth Jedi live action adaptation, Rogue squadron with Maverick vibes and band of brothers with clones or rebels
Think keeping Ninth Jedi animated would be better. Live action anime adaptations tend to not be good (Netflix being the most guilty)
I still like The Mandalorian better.
Same. I care about what’s happening more. I don’t get why people are throwing Mandalorian under the bus lately. It revitalized my love of Star Wars after the sequels.
I will say that it doesn't feel like a Star Wars show HOWEVER I don't mean this in a bad way. It's by far my favorite Disney stars wars thing. It's something completely new and different and I love it.
Even before the finale of s1 its already my favourite Star Wars thing.
Sure there's clone wars arcs and rebels episodes and all that I think might be individually better than episodes of Andor individually. But on the whole Andor is the best star wars thing right now. I was super hyped for it after seeing the behind the scenes sizzle reel in 2020 but still kinda cautious. Then I saw the first trailer and was like oh yeah this is gonna be incredible. And it got to the point where I was terrified I'd end up hating it. But like 5mins into the first episode I was like nah we're in good hands here. And its just gotten better and better.
I think it’s been great at not only telling its own story but also expanding and enhancing people and events we’ve seen before. And by adding details about the different planets, like the death rituals in Ferrix or the arranged marriages of Chandrilla, the galaxy feels more realistic and lived in. Not like the planets are interchangeable.
My favourite Disney Star Wars product.
Agreed.
Amazing
You really should watch the Expanse if you haven't already, you'd probably like it.
